5/12: The Chris moment

The reaction when Chris gets voted off is probably the best in Idol history. His confidence melts instantly into shock and anger. Kat’s jaw drops to the ground. See the stills and watch the video at this site before Fox pulls it.

A few bloggers complained that the previous link I had included to the Chris departure had gay advertising and such. If that offends you, stick with the youtube.com link above. But in fairness, the original link is a lot clearer so you can check it out here if you choose..

I did not see “rage,” only Chris’ trademark intensity, which for me is part of his appeal. I am sorry to see him leave the show and am looking forward to hearing his music in the future, which is more than I can say for the others.

I see the shock and the disappointment, but where did they come up with rage????

I might have felt some, but I thought he did well, he looked hurt and surprised but did any of yall see Rage???

He is too classy for that, at THAT moment, I thought he did very well, You Go Chris!!!! Rock ON!!!!!!!

The way Ryan slipped it in was more of a shock to me - most American Idol watchers probably missed Ryan even saying Chris was going home - Rage - not!!!! Very surprised - yes

Good morning, bloggers. I’ve been seeing those pictures all over the place since Wednesday. Chris was confident he was staying, Kat was equally confident she was leaving. The voting public sure has a way of laughing at confidence.

Morning all! I watched the clip of Chris’ reaction and he was in total shock. I was not suprised as I knew the shocker of the season was coming.

By DS

The disgust was obvious on either FOX or CNN yesterday morning without the still clip.

Couln’t the video clip be from some other website besides an obviously edgy overtly gay site? And my reaction would be the same if it were a non-gay site.

Take consideration for young children who might come into the room.

My last word about the Chris issue:

Don’t take this all the wrong way, I never said that Chris could not sing, I merely said that Chris needs to be more versitle and not look like a -fish-out-of-water when he tries to sing differently than what he is use to. A group like “Fuel” is a perfect match for someone like Chris.

Carla, I have to agree. I am taking a small bit of guilty pleasure out of seeing Chris’ shock and reaction. It’s sad but it’s part of why we watch. Just like watching NASCAR waiting for the car crashes.

“obviously edgy overtly gay site?” The link takes you to a page with the word “gay” on it. That is enough to keep the kids out of the room? Give me a break.

I’m a little worried about Kat now. Yes, she deserved to go home and yes, Chris was robbed. But none of that is her fault and I see a backlash coming. She was the one standing next to the shocker of the season. We still have great finalists, who are going to do their absolute best despite increasing pressure, serious nerve problems and rabid fans who say horrible things about them just in an effort to promote their favorite. I don’t think I could have stood up to the pressure when I was their age.

Why Jenk? Because everyone in the world is straight? Because it’s wrong to be gay? Replace that word “gay” with anything else…black, Catholic, etc. and you’d be in a whole lot of trouble. Why is it okay to bash the gays? Get over it. We’re queer, we’re here, deal with it.

I agree,Carla. As you know, she’s always been one of my favorites(I did not vote for her after Elvis night). She seems to be having trouble finding that comfort zone…maybe a little guidance in the form of the judge’s and Clive’s song choice, will show her the way.

I don’t think that being directed to a gay website is a big deal unless some really offensive pictures popped up and that wasn’t the case. Just seeing the word Gay on the screen is not enough to get all bent out of shape. I am not gay and the site didn’t bother me at all.

I am not a Rocker so I did not see the talent in Chris until the week of Country Music. I was very impressed with the intensity and depth of his performance. I wish him well but will probably not follow his career if he remains true to his Rocker world! I’m sure Kat is a wonderful person but I just can’t see the real “KAT”. Her talent is visible but just NO personality. Taylor is the total package and Elliott is awesome. I would like to see Elliott achieve all his dreams. I admire REAL people that can handle the kind of stress they have to experience with AI.

Maybe to learn a little. Going to a “gay” website does not make you gay. Going to a straight website does not make you straight. Diversity does mean more than just getting along with people of other races, it also means people that are different from you.

Get a grip! I’m gay and I didn’t go to the site you guys are all talking about. I watched the actual show on Weds. night when Chris got the boot. He looked surprised and shocked. I thought it would be Kat McPhee, myself. Therefore I was surprised, but not shocked. I knew he would go before Taylor and was hoping he would go before Elliot.

PS The reason I had to say that I am gay is because I don’t want anyone thinking I’m “straight”. I have a big problem with that!

Anyway… Kat or Taylor should go next!!!

By G354ME

May 12, 2006 09:24 AM | Link to this

I must have visited another site than “the gay site” jenk is so worried about. Yes there were gay ads on the link, but I didn’t see the word “gay” anywhere in the link address. The only way to know that was to click on the ads.

I’m very straight, but I could care less what others thought of me. I always figured the ones that worried the most about others concerned if they were gay or not, must be gay or think they might be and afraid to admit it.

But I do see the concern of some parents since some of the ads were very sexual and racy. But I’m glad someone had a link showing the final moments since I was on the road and failed to see it (I expected to be home so I didn’t have it recorded).

By shay

May 12, 2006 09:32 AM | Link to this

I think there are alot of conservative people that feel uncomfortable being directed to a gay website without prior notice. Jenk, I am not saying you are like this but I know a lot of people who are. Like I have a friend who has a problem discussing sex period. It’s just a topic she chooses to talk about only with her husband. She won’t even discuss a back rub. To me, its not a big deal but to her, it is. I don’t think Jenk has a problem with gays, he/she just does not want anyone on her job or wherever she is seeing it on her screen and then spreading rumors. It could happen so that’s why I said I understand to that effect. No one is gay bashing today. We know we have people on this blog that are openly gay and there is nothing wrong with that. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions about sexuality.

Good morning again. What do you say we get back to talking about Idol. We have 3 great contestants left and no way to figure out what they will be singing. I usually like the choices Clive makes for each contestant. He seems to understand where their strengths and weaknesses lie. The judges sometimes pick well for their contestant but they can be very hit and miss.

By idol-observer

May 12, 2006 10:59 AM | Link to this

Weird blog today. Don’t know if it because its Friday.

Does anyone believe that Katherine will be in the top 2 because of the left coast voting and the teeny boppers texting?

When does the Idol Extra come on DirecTV? That should be really interesting this week.

By Deirdre

May 12, 2006 10:59 AM | Link to this

Alan, nice article…it won’t be too popular with a lot of Taylor/Kat/Elliot fans but it was clever.

By Deirdre

May 12, 2006 11:03 AM | Link to this

I think it’s possible that Kat will be in the top 2 for a number of reasons. 1. She’s a good singer, 2. She’s the last female, 3. Taylor and Elliot will divide the anti-Kat votes. We have absolutely no idea whether it’s the text messages or the west coast that has saved her so far but, it doesn’t really matter, does it. If she makes the final two, it will be because more people voted for her than for at least one other person.

By alan

May 12, 2006 11:07 AM | Link to this

After watching that video and stopping it and starting it the things I found most interesting.

Kat’s family not even applauding or smiling.

A shot of all three judges. Paula with her face covered, Simon being totally p** along with Randy. This was the only time we actually say Randy. His head looked like it was about to explode.

The shots of Taylor. We think there is some kind of rift between the two. However, he looks like he is about the throw up.

The very end. Did you notice the first person Chris went to when he went over to the contestants. Looks like he goes straight to Taylor and big hug.

After really thinking about the remaining three I think Kat will win it. IMO the only way she will not win it, is if the backlash is just too big from her being the one beside Chris. The judges and Clive will give her perfect mondern songs next week. If she will just pick the right song for herself.

If she makes it to the finals you can bet one of the AI orig. songs will be perfect for her as well. They always fit a voice like hers.

By idol-observer

May 12, 2006 11:07 AM | Link to this

I agree that Kat is a good singer that still need development, but who doesn’t since they are all amateurs. The Female factor will score as long as she performs well. I think a failure of any one of the songs could do her in.

To be honest, while Elliott has a good voice I believe that he may be the one to go home. While Elliott sings well his performances have been laborious. Wouldn’t at all be surprised to see a Kat/Taylor final. That would be an interesting result…

By Jim

May 12, 2006 11:07 AM | Link to this

No surprise the phony poser got the boot. When he removed his sunglasses and pointed at the camera, his amateurism was just way too much to take. The guy was so full of himself, I loved seeing him get the boot, good riddence poser. Taylor is the only one with an ounce of originality.

Yeh the article I linked above does poke fun at the three remaining contestants but it is really somewhat true. I figured the Daughtry haters would also like it as it does point out things that most of them consider faults. However, those thing they consider faults are what truly make a modern day pop or rock star.

Also the suggestions in the article of the type of people that win IDOL. Of my gosh, they are so true of all of the winners.

By Deirdre

May 12, 2006 11:17 AM | Link to this

Alan and Idol observer….I agree with you both. All three of them have good voices…that’s not even part of the consideration anymore. It all boils down to personal taste now. Depending on their performances, I will have a lot of difficulty choosing between Kat and Taylor. Taylor is so unique and fun-loving. Kat appeals to the relaxed and peaceful side of me. Elliot and Kat are having some serious nervousness issues that may hurt them. Elliot’s songs almost always start off shaky then build up to very good. Kat usually looks like a deer caught in the headlights when she finishes singing.

By Mac Music

May 12, 2006 11:25 AM | Link to this

I definately think the backlash on Kat will be to strong to have her move on. Chris fans will split votes to Elliott/Taylor. Do not forget E-train registered more votes then Kat fans.Add that up with the amount of hatered votes coming his way from Chris fans. Kat will for sure be gone next week. There are thousands of voters that want to make it their personal objective next week to send her home. The backlash is to great to keep her around. Taylor/Elliott see you in the finals.

Explain why there should be a backlash against Kat….I know there will be but what form of logic makes this her fault? She has no control over what her or Chris’ fans do or don’t do. She did nothing wrong. Chris probably never lost fans, he just didn’t gain any from the other eliminations.

ha yall.call me crazy but now i think elliot will win

By alan

May 12, 2006 12:09 PM | Link to this

I agree Deidre and Mac. I think the backlash will be two strong from the Chris fans. However, I can also see the Chris fans settling down and realizing it wasn’t her fault he got voted off. Also consider that a lot of Chris fans might not vote for anyone. Also consider that during many of the weeks this year Kat had enough fans to be near the top on dialidol. She has certainly been ahead of Elliot more than she has been behind him. If she has had that strong of support before, all she has to do is nail the night next Tuesday and all of them will come back out. It is possible she may gain enough votes from her base because of this.

We have never heard Elliot or Taylor sing a modern song that could be released today or in the last 15 years on the charts. If the judges or Clive give them one I am afraid one of them may tank. Maybe not, I can just see it happening. However, Kat will probably sing three songs next week which will all be recent chart toppers at least within the last few years. Also she should consider doing a modern country song or another genre in addition to pop songs to garner those votes that those types of fans have nothing to vote for now. Even though she will not be she could be an outstanding female country artist by today’s standards. Elliot and Taylor basically appeal to the same type of fans except Elliot has a slight more R&B feel to him than Taylor. For people who do not have favorites I think they are often really splitting their votes among the same type of music and age bracket fans. Considering that, and if she nails her songs, she may gain so many votes from the kid to 35 yr old age group that she may be able to overtake one of them.

Now some of you don’t get your undies in wad because I dissed Taylor and Elliot a little. I am just throwing out some possibilities here with the remaining three. Trying to generate a little bit of intelligent AI coversation. Also I don’t want you Taylor and Elliot fans getting to comfortable now that your main competetion has been eliminated.

By Deirdre

May 12, 2006 12:30 PM | Link to this

It all makes sense, Alan, but I really think next week’s results will be based on personal taste. The contestants have all proven themselves to be singers. It all depends, now, on who’s style garners the most votes.

This started a lot earlier than when greg showed up but has escalated to pretty dramatic proportions. There are a number of people on this blog who are not’real’. Deirdre, I guess whoever it is caught on to the Iggit Thing. They figured since we were ignoring them, they would pretend to be one of us so it makes it difficult to talk to each other because you don’t know if you have the right person. But enough of that, back to AI business. I wish we had the research skills like Mike. We would already know what songs were going to be performed by now. I always like when Clive picks a song because he always choose the perfect song. I never like Paula or Randy’s pick. Simon usually does o.k. picking a song. Paula will probably get to pick Elliott’s song, Randy pick Taylor’s song, and Simon pick Kat’s song.

Alan, I noticed those same things watching the results show. Neither Kat NOR her family looked happy. It’s funny, almost makes you wonder if she has something else brewing and was waiting to get the boot so she could jump on it.

Also, I noticed as well that Chris went straight to Taylor first for the big hug.

BTW - no panties in a wad here for this Taylor and Elliott fan. I’m just glad to read some actual discussion about the show. The childish crap is just about too much to bother anymore.

Okay, I’m certainly no Mike S, but I’ve got a little spoiler info to share. As you may know, the contestants are doing their hometown ‘tours’ today, clips of which will be shown on AI next week.

SO, a tidbit … Paula Abdul picked Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” for Elliott’s judges song choice. It was announced when he received the keys to the city from the Mayor of Richmond.

Taylor will be in Montgomery, Alabama later this afternoon to meet with Governor Riley who tell him his Judges song choice. (I so bet Simon will be picking Taylor’s.)

No info on Kat yet.

Jex, no it is not safe to come back. The imposter is in full effect. I am so glad that my life hasn’t resulted to what this person is doing. I mean you would have to have absolutely “no life, no friends, and a true coward” to have time to do all this crap. Kind of reminds me of people spending weeks to come up with a bug that crashes everyone’s computer. Just stupid. Why not join in the conversation and type an educated blog? It ain’t that difficult.

Kat will only have to travel a few minutes to her home of Sherman Oaks, CA.

In interviews this a.m., Chris is not hiding his shock. He talks about how everyone told him that it would be a Chris-and-Taylor finale, and when you hear that enough, you start to think it might be so.

He said they stopped doing the kiss-off dinner after the top 5. He said that he and Taylor and Elliott hung out, and they were just as bummed as he was. He did not speak to Katharine afterward - said he understood that she must feel like the odd person out being the only girl left now.

He did reveal that he and Taylor had been living together, while Elliott had his own place but would come over all the time and hang with them. He said it was kinda like college without the bong parties. lol

Regarding Fuel, he said “There’s going to be a flood of opportunities. I can’t really talk about them, but there are some lined up and I just have to feel out all the offers and make sure I’m doing the right thing for me. There’s a couple [big things]. At this point I have to take everything into consideration. I don’t want to make a rash consideration and regret it later. I don’t know if I’m in the position to say yes or no to anything, just because of my mindset. I have to think about it long-term and not just right now. I’m a songwriter myself, so to launch my own career would be my dream, selling out stadiums, doing my own thing.”

Chris, I am going to iggit you. For one, I don’t know who you are and have never heard of you until now so only God knows who you really are, and two obviously had a bad lunch because that paragraph made absolutely no sense.

Deidre, excellent point and one I was trying to make above. Because of the controversy this week and it now being the final 3 I imagine more people will tune in that are not die hard idol fans. Also after seeing a contestant get booted that didn’t deserve the phone lines will be buzzing next week especially if someone does good. I was giving the example above of Kat doing well. Now with new viewers tuning in because of controversy and the finals I have a feeling people are going to be voting that have never voted before. To me that means more votes more than likely for more modern music. Which would be Kat.

Greg I actually think Taylor is good for the niche group he would appeal to. IMO one good thing about the niche group he appeals to is that they are crazy about their music. I don’t mind his style of music but I am not crazy about it. I would like him personally a lot better without the antics. Now if I was in a bar having a few and he was performing the antics would be fine.

I do not like Elliot’s style at all. While I like R&B he is just too jazzy for me and the vibrato kills me. I think I also relate him to jazz. I know I said the other day his voice lacks power. His voice is strong but what I mean by that is it just seems like he is singing the words with no feeling to it at all.

I just want to hear something from one of the two that I could imagine being released tomorrow and making it to a billboard top 10. Oh, I don’t mean an obsucre billboard top 10 either like Taylor plucked the Beatles from. People are buying the authentic stuff from the older groups not remakes. I haven’t heard it yet from either one.

By Shay

May 12, 2006 01:48 PM | Link to this

Jeff, sure we can hook up for the finale but we will have to email each other outside of the blog. Wouldn’t want any pyschos showing up to hurt all of us because we didn’t include them.

He says that next week he would have sung ‘Dream On’ by Aerosmith.

Shay, I totally disagree about this being an excellent song choice for Elliot. Unless, he breaks out of his mold and does a cover similar to something other than pre 1980. We all know he can sing the Bobby Caldwell version. There have been lots of other versions of this song he needs to choose something more modern. However, with his track record he will not. This will hurt coming down to the finals.

By Deirdre

May 12, 2006 02:06 PM | Link to this

I don’t think Chris’ departure was the BIGGEST shock in AI history but it was up there. The show is obviously not ready for a rocker which suggests a rather conservative audience. All three of the finalists fit that category. Again, it’s just going to be personal taste that decides the outcome. Most of the pundits are betting on Kat, or maybe Taylor…….of course, they thought Chris was gonna win it all so what good are pundits?

Deirdre, I think I read yesterday you said you were going to only vote for one person from now on. I think that’s an excellent idea. The question is , do we judge on just Tuesday’s performance, or throughout the competition. At this point in the game, it is kind of hard to just look at one night and make a decision on who should go into the finale. I think Taylor is pretty much a lock for the finale, but Elliott and Kat have equally had their “not so good performances”. What do you guys think?

By Ken

May 12, 2006 02:16 PM | Link to this

Shay, I think it’s a good time to consistently vote for one person. A lot of people have been doing that throughout the compeition thats why we had people like Kelly Pickler in there so long. (Just my opinion) I personally will vote for Elliot for as long as I can, if he goes next then I’ll vote for Katherine (I guess). No actually I won’t vote at all.

By Deirdre

May 12, 2006 02:19 PM | Link to this

Shay….I think, when we vote for more than one person, we are dividing votes. At this point, it’s time to make a decision. I’ll base my vote on Tuesday night’s performances but it is impossible to block out everything we’ve seen before. It will affect how we vote. They have all had their clinkers. Taylor, Kat and Elliot have all had bad nights and good. I’m just going to try to decide who I like the best and stick with them.

I just got the ‘all clear’ alert. Thanks again, Rodney. Sanity returns to the blog…at least until the next looney tunes drops in.

I watched a video on msn.com of 4 pundits discussing the ‘shocking’ elimination of Chris. A couple of them claimed not to be shocked. Jessica Sierra, a contestant last year, was one of the pundits, another was the editor of Star magazine, a Las Vegas odds-maker and somebody else, can’t remember who. It’s interesting to hear different viewpoints.

Hey Deirdre vin exhales at a recognizable friend. I wonder why they weren’t surprised…almost everyone had picked Chris to win. But they obviously know more about behind the scenes than we do since they’ve been there. I didn’t know Chris had his own band..he might do better to create a future with them. I know I’d rather see him with new faces, new material than see him recycling some Fuel material. But that’s just me.
