5/16: Soaring over that rainbow

Clive made life tough for all three of them in the opening trio of songs. The judges handed them songs on a platter and all three delivered, though Katharine probably solidified her chances to get into the final two over Elliott. And in the personal round, Taylor easily finished off the strongest. His slot in the final two is solidified though he’s going to lose some votes for constantly yelping “Soul Patrol! Soul Patrol! Soul Patrol!”

So my gut reaction is the bottom two will be Kat and Elliott and Elliott will go home. His final song choice did him in. It was almost like Chris picking another Creed song if he were still in the competition.

Dialidol as of 10:15 p.m. is showing Taylor in the lead as usual and a close race between Kat and Elliott, with Kat just barely ahead. Could this be a photo finish? Or will Kat’s text messaging friends and West Coast Buddies give her a comfy lead and put away Elliott?

  1. Katharine (Simon’s pick “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland & others) — Kimberley Locke rocked this song. We’ll see if Kat can do it, too. She’s on the floor again! A camera from above. Something wrong with her ear? What did she just do during the start of the chorus? She’s doing it in a very sexy, sultry way, which is her strength. It’s a theatrical song and she’s theater all the way. She doesn’t try to blow it out, thank goodness. She even hits the last note well. This is easily her best performance in ages, if ever. Thank you SImon! Randy: “Finally! Finally, this is what I’ve been waiting for. This is the best vocal for you this season. That was brilliant.” Paula: “Soak in this moment. Your element and your magic is when you don’t go overboard.” Simon: “I’m very happy for you tonight. It proves the point you don’t need to lay it too much. You have a very special talent. That was the single best performance in the competition to date.”

  2. Taylor (Randy’s pick Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful”) — Randy couldn’t have picked a better song but the comparisons to Joe Cocker may not necessarily be a good thing. We’ll see. Taylor is taking the subtle route and he hits a home run. Thank you Randy! Randy: “A great tender moment from Taylor. You did the song proud.” Paula: “You not only look like a star, you are a star.” SImon: “That was far and away your best performance.” But the soul patrol shout outs—getting annoying!

  3. Taylor (Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding) – He gives the umpteenth to “Soul Patrol” before jumping in and swim in the soul. A delight. He’s playing to win! Randy: “I got a new name for you. Your new name from now on is have a good time funky Taylor.” (Uh huh). Paula: “I chose this and foudn out you picked it yourself. You did an incredible job.” Simon: “Smart choice of song. Good performance. Hideous ending. But I’ll see you next Tuesday.”

  4. Elliott (Paula’s pick “What You Won’t Do For Love” Bobby Caldwell) — This is much better for Elliott than Journey. And he’s feeling this one much more. It fits him like a glove. Thank you, Paula! A solid performance all the way around. Randy: “It was a good song choice. You were a little sharp most of the song.” Paula: “This is the kind of artist you are. You have amazing soul, amazing R&B tone. You just pierce to the heart. You’re solid.” Simon: “It wasn’t the song in the world but the style suited you well. I thought you sang that pretty good.”

  5. Katharine (Personal choice: “I Ain’t Got Nothing But the Blues” by Ella Fitzgerald) — She really goes old school but picks a song that’s all slinky and she wears a decent dress, too. I’m sure she’s sung this many times and figured it’d be an easy one to slide in. It’s a far more fun sung than what Elliott chose. Not quite “Rainbow” but better than R. Kelly. Randy: “The last song was the one for me. It was okay. I understand what you’re doing. I don’t know.” Paula: “Over the Rainbow is in your element but you still did a great job.” SImon: “Overall, you’ve had a good night tonight. You go five steps forward, one step back. I just wish we had reversed the order and ended up with the songs in the middle round with all of you. It was okay.”

  6. Elliott (Clive’s choice: Journey’s “Open Arms”) — The very first Journey song ever cleared for “Idol”! High school proms, dates at the roller skating rink, that first kiss. And “Open Arms.” Elliott does a very truncated version and does it well. I expect good marks from the judges though he’s not quite as comfortable as he is with the R&B songs he usually sings. Randy: “That song is near and dear to my heart. I was in Journey… At first, when I heard about that choice. But you worked it out. You had a little problem with the chorus but take chances. Do your thing!” Paula: ” You are in excellent voice tonight. You did a great job.” Simon: “It was a good choice of song. It wasn’t a great performance. You are a little stiff. You have to got to loosen up and have to believing you can make the finals next week. You can do better than that.”

  7. Taylor (Clive choice: Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In the Dark”) — This is Bruce’s 37th best song. Was this the only Bruce song you could clear? How about “Born to Run”? Or “Brilliant Disguise”? Or “Hungry Heart”? Taylor tried but man, there’s nothing he could do with this unless Courtney Cox came out from the crowd or something. Well, he used Paula instead. Randy: “What I love about you? You know how to have a good time. Dancing with Paula was hot!” Paula: “I had fun with you. You’re incredible!” Simon: “That was okay. It was a bit pale in comparison to the original.” And Taylor yelps “Soul Patrol” again. Yeesh!

  8. Katharine (Clive choice: R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly”) — At least she doesn’t sound anything like R. Kelly. She’s got that grin on her face as always. It doesn’t quite soar but it’s okay. She wants so much to be Celine and Whitney but she’s not. She looks great as always. Randy: “You look amazing. But you know my problem still is. These songs you want to be that singer. But you aren’t that one just yet. It wasn’t quite the right thing for you.” Paula: “You look beautiful. This is difficult.” Then Kat jumps in: ” You’ve been rough on me the past couple of weeks.” Someone in the crowd says “You’re incredible” and Paula never gets around to critiquing. Simon: “I think you’re being a bit unfair. I think apart from a couple of bum notes toward the end, you created a bit of a moment for yourself.” Randy: “I disagree.” You have to wonder if her talking back will help or hurt her.

  9. Elliott (Personal choice: “I Believe To My Soul,” the Donny Hathaway version of the Ray Charles song) —It’s got a gospel edge to it and he seems comfy but the song is sort of dull in the end. It was just okay. Randy: “I don’t believe this was the perfect song for you but you can definitely sing.” Paula: “I agree with what Randy said. It’s not a song people can connect with because they don’t know it but the thing about you Elliott nobody can sing songs like that, like Ray Charles, it’s difficult to sing that song. You’re a funky white boy.” SImon: “Your songs are not going to carry you through next week. However, you’re a great guy. You’re a great singer. You will make your mom very proud in what you’ve achieved in this competition.”

HELLO FROM DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am here, and stoked for the show!

Getting some rehearsal news. Kat is said to have hit a home run with “Over the Rainbow” and then FORGOT HER LYRICS on “I belive I can Fly”. Trying to get word on Taylor and Elliot.

Great to hear the imposter is MIA.

Initial word is order is Elliot, Kat, Taylor.

Just as the #2 person has gone home on top 5 week — The first 4 seasons the person performing first on top 3 night has gone home every year.

Either way, a little safe, but beautiful.

Mike - I agree 100%. She screamed that song…even Paula couldn’t quite put it into words. Simon is playing devil’s advocate, I guess. Taylor’s on right now — not a great one for him either.

Ok: 1st up: Elliott with BAD song choice! AI commandment #4: Thou shalt not start the show with a ballad. I know Clive stuck him with it, but Randy played bass with Journey and will be super critical. Too bad. No movement, no runs. Pitchy too.

NEXT!!!

Kat sings R. Kelly - another ballad (suprise) I believe I can fly - breaks another AI commandment #6: Thou shalt not sing a song performed too many times in auditions. VERY flat at times - too runny - missed high note. NOT GOOD. Simon sucked up to Clive when Randy ppointed out she broke Commandment #6.

NEXT!!

It’s our man singin’ Springsteen (for the 1st time on AI) Dancing in the Dark: NAILED IT!!! YEAH BABY!!! WHOOOOOOOOO! Soul Patrol!!!! And he pulled Paula outa the audience! BAMMMM! (no suprise, really)

It’s OVAH!!!! Round 1 to Taylor.

BTW Rodney - you don’t get Taylor - we know - at least don’t come out and say anything nice about him. You’d start a trend.

Mike, Elliott sang: So now I come to you with open arms hoping you’ll see what your love means to me Here I am with open arms nothing to hide, believe what I say open arms

I’m pretty certain it really goes: So now I come to you with open arms nothing to hide, believe what I say Here I am with open arms hoping you’ll see what your love means to me open arms

Agreed with mikegadawg on the hyping of Elliot. Could Paula be any further inside Elliot’s back pocket? Not that he isn’t great—I’d like to see a Kat-Elliot final—but Paula’s a bit over-the-top with him

okay, hate to admit it…as a longstanding rider on the Etrain…but I’m afraid my boy is going home

Soul Patrol will keep Taylor…even though You are so Beautiful was a bit boring. But KAT, i’ve never liked this girl, but she BROUGHT IT with “Somewhere over the rainbow”. My hats off to her. That performance will see her to the finals. I missed Elliot’s first performance (got home at 8:09) but I was waiting for “Do for Love” and he did pretty good. But not good enough to overtake Kat and Taylor….sigh. We’ll see what happens on song #3.

Im so irritated. Its so clear Simon wants a Taylor and Kat showdown…

Its irritating. His last comment to Elliot was a clear ploy to influence the audience…

He wants Kat because she is the most marketable…

She seems so slutty to me tonight? I think thats why dont I connect to her even though she sings well….

Round three:

Elliott makes Ray Charles fans break the mute button on the remote by pressing it WAY too hard. And he broke Commandment # 9: Thou shalt not sing a song in another AI contestant’s genre. Buh bye Elliott!

Kat sings an OLD ballad, and also tries to borrow Taylor mojo (Commandment 9 again): stripper song!!! Stripper boots! McTata’s are out! She’s workin it folks… She’s in the finals. My ears still hurt though. I now have nuthin but the blues. Judges said she sucked.

Last up in the Pimp Spot: Taylor with an ‘in your face’ moment to Nigel and friends: the song judged not to be a great love song. A song when performed by Taylor in rehersal that was said to be appropriate for ‘Blues Brothers’ week, not Andrea’s week. Is there any doubt what would happen?

THUD!!!

A KNOCKOUT in the 3rd round. The winnah!!! Taylor.

Listen, understand how it is as I put tonight in a nutshell. One of the best nights that Idol has ever had! That being said. Taylor, Taylor Taylor, that is all I can say. You know I am impartial, I love all the contestants the best performance…Taylor, the best song…Kat(over the rainbow). Best overall…Elliott. But you have to have a lasting impression and Kat with the best song and Taylor with the best performance will go on. I hate to see the best singer not be there but this is real life and I have to keep it real!!

I can tell you Taylor did not nail Springsteen!!!Not at all, there is so much more life he could have brought to that song. Kathrine could have owned the night if she had picked a better song to end with. But I disagree with Rodney. open arms was the second best sung song of the night and I know a little about this song!

By Harmony372

May 16, 2006 09:05 PM | Link to this

ok….harmony breathing deeply now that I’ve calmed down. Taylor’s finish wasn’t so bad….it just ruined what i THOUGHT he would do with that song. So this is a flashback to season 2. Rueben/Clay/Kimberley. I wanted Kimberley to make the finals…she deserved it based on performance. Tonight I want Elliot to make finals, HE deserves it based on 3 solid performances…but Kim went home…and so will Elliot. Unless I get to TEXT VOTING!!!!! See y’all I’ll be lurking the rest of the night while I’m texting.

Chuckles, Listen to the show, Kat didn’t pick I believe I can fly, it was picked for her and they always pick male songs for her to sing. Let’s hear Taylor and Chris sing Diana Ross or Whitney…. vote Kat.

By bob

May 16, 2006 09:05 PM | Link to this

the winner of this year’s AI will ALWAYS be compared to Chris. It will be a modern day Clay vs. Ruben. Honestly, who will have a better career, the winner or Chris? What a shame. None of the performances were “superstar” material. They were all just ok.

Taylor will win, but what will he sing, oldies? That is all he seems to sing now, but can he be successful in that area?

By Mike S

Elliot - “Open Arms”, Journey - Beautiful tender song. Had to battle BANDZILLA to be heard. A great way to start the show. Good Job.

Katherine - “I Believe I Can Fly”, R Kelly - SHE DID IT AGAIN!!!! She lost the lyrics in the Chorus!!! Way oversang the second half of the song, way to much melisma, tried to many big notes. too too too much. Simon in bigtime pimp mode for Kat.

Taylor - “Dancing In The Dark”, Bruce Springsteen - Fun song, good job. Not great, but he brought it home!

First round - Taylor, Elliot, Katherine — but no one really hit a homerun so far.

Elliot - “What You Won’t Do For Love”, Bobby Crawford - Great Job on this song. Blew it out of the park. Perfect song choice for him. Paula did a good job picking it.

Katherine - “SomeWhere Over The Rainbow”, Judy Garland - Not bad, but not great. This was boring with a capital B. Not impressed at all.

Taylor - “You Are So Beautiful”, Joe Cocker - NIce understated start. Taylor going for the easy listening version, doing great. Turning it into the bluesy love song it is. Absolute Magic.

Second ROund - Taylor, Elliot, Katherine

Elliot - “I Believe To My Soul”, Ray Charles - Great job, but he picked way to obscure a song again. I think he has done fantastic tonight, but I am very worried about his chance.

Katherine - “I Ain’t Got Nothing But The Blues”, - Cats worldwide just committed suicide by the millions. Screechy, oversung, horrible train wreck. TOtal disaster, just gave Chris fans the reason they wanted to vote against her.

Taylor - “Try A Little Tenderness”, Otis Redding - Wow! This was Taylor’s signature performance. Absolutely amazing. A huge home run.

LAst round - Taylor, Elliot, Kat.

RANKING BY SONG : 1. Taylor - Try a Little Tenderness 2. Taylor - You are So Beautiful 3. Elliot - I Believe to My Soul 4. Elliot - What You Won’t Do For Love 5. Kat - Somewhere over the rainbow. 6. Taylor - Dancing in the Dark 7. Elliot - Open Arms 8. Kat - I Believe I can Fly 9. Kat - I Ain’t Got Nothing But The Blues

OVerall - TAYLOR, Elliot, Kat

Kat should go home for forgetting her lyrics for the second week in a row, and having her third consecutive week with at least one total trainwreck of a song. However, I think it will be extremely close between her and Elliot.

I never expected THE MOMENT to come from Kat. Chris maybe or Paris or even Mandisa. And this proves once again how bad I am at song choice. I bow to you Simon. Over the Rainbow was the best song of the evening AND the best performance of the competition.

Taylor was wonderful. You Are So Beautiful was nearly perfect. Dancing in the Dark and Try a Little Tenderness were great(but now I understand why they didn’t want him to sing it during Bocelli week)

I’m sorry E-train. Elliot, while talented, did not deliver tonight as well as Taylor and Kat.

Kat’s “SOmewhere over the Rainbow”, I know you are not a fan dide but the best performance of the night..sorry. I am not a Kat fan either but is was better than any other song tonight.

Hey Mike!!!!!!!!!We’ve missed you this week!!! Taylor, Taylor, Taylor…poor Elliot but, Kat did suck it up on her other 2 songs. Rainbow was good but the other 2 I didn’t like at all. She looks like she doesn’t care that she’s there, IMO. I want Elliot to stay but, I’m worried…Mike you are right once again, the band was way too loud—again!♥

Based on tonight’s performances , Taylor will take it all. He has been the most versatile overall and is a true performer. He has shown that he can sing almost anything, where Kat and Elliott both seem to be stuck in on one certain style of music. Taylor is consistant. Kat and Elliott are not!

Night’s summary:

Eliott did not show anything new. Same old singer I can picture singing at a wedding - for 60 year olds.

Kat - forgot the songs but looked good doing it. Can her skirts be any shorter or lower cut?

Taylor - the only one I can see who knows what he is doing. Week-in, Week-out, he is the best. He has a unique sound, is fun to watch and keeps us coming back each week.

If next week’s finale is Eliott and Kat, then I am waiting for House to come on and won’t watch until then.

Yeah! That was fun. Taylor’s going to win, and the race is for second place. There’s no telling who will be there next week with Taylor. I know Katherine did great on a song or two, but I’m just not sure that Chris’ votes will translate to Katherine. I just see all of those people who were voting for Chris either not voting, or voting for another guy. I can only imagine that Chris’ fans aren’t exactly happy with Katherine beating him out. But this was a good show. Loved it. Pure fun…especially Taylor’s last song.

How do you screw up the words to OPEN ARMS? Was that SNAGGLEPUSS living in a cave before he auditioned? Kiss it goodbye, Teen Wolf!

I still can’t believe people see any vocal talent in Taylor the Twitcher. I hope he wins just so I can laugh when he becomes yesterday’s news like the winners in seasons 2 and 3.

Does McFeever cause swelling in the groin area? The little black dress gave me a special feeling.

BTW: The local Ritchmond, VA phone provider set up special phone banks that will call from other areas north & west of Richmond to allow E-Train folks to avoid phone blockage.

Also: you can’t use online texting to register a vote: you must use the phone or it doesn’t count.

Remember Soul Patrollers: use the 5709 number to call so the DialIdol folks can maximise their software! They didn’t anticipate the 3 numbers move.

And: I understand that Kat didn’t choose the R- Kelly song. The point is her performance would have to overcome the negatives, just as Taylor did singing a song identified with The Boss and broke the 11th AI Commandment - Thou shalt not sing a song that is a signature tune by a known artist.

The difference was he didn’t suck.

Should be Kat going…lyric problems again? We know Taylor is a shoo in…he was magnificent and I haven’t liked him much to date. E-Train was solid all three songs but one song will put Kat in the finale even though her first and last sucked what kind of water is it you always say? I thought she was way too loud and showed zero tenderness or vulnerability when singing Rainbow. But that’s JMO. Jesus Christ indeed Mikey! Idol pimped Kat to the finale.

By Harmony372

May 16, 2006 09:27 PM | Link to this

harmony on a break from feverishly text messenging votes for Etrain whew! how do these kids do it?!?!? I’m tired after 20.

To address what some have said about what kind of RECORD these folks will make. Elliot will make the best RECORD (of the 3 left). Kat is made for the stage…Broadway…and that’s NOT a put down. Taylor is made for the stage too….Vegas…the Wayne Newton analogy is a good one. People will PAY to see him perform, night after night. Again not a put down. But Elliot, while I love him…is not a stage performer, but a GREAT vocalist. So IMO He deserves the RECORD contract. Let’s be real…how many of us on here are going to buy tickets to go to the concert when it comes to town. But you will pick up a CD in the store. Elliots will be best (of the remaining 3) now if you want best “sounding” CD out of the 12. The rank is Paris, Mandisa, Elliot, then Chris….though Chris’ CD will be most commercially successful…because there are more rockers than R&B/Soul fans in America.

Back to texting!!!!

So, was Carrie Underwood versatile? I don’t recall her venturing outside the country genre that often. I’ll be very honest, Elliott’s best genre is probably not one I listen to that often, but he’s turned me on to that type of music. I can almost say the same for Carrie last year — not a huge country fan, but she had me liking it. I never got that “wow, I’ve been missing out” feeling when Kat sings. Taylor is entertaining, but he hasn’t turned my head as much as Elliott — he’s sang a lot of popular, catchy songs. Everyone has their own opinion, as well as their favorite singer for whatever reason, but for me, the fact that someone could make my ears perk up and look at a type of music differently than before carries a lot of weight.

So far dialidol which has been accurate, has Kat in the bottom !! YES !!!!!!!! I THINK SHE WAS WAY OVERRATED TONIGHT. SHE IS JUST AN AVERAGE SINGER!! Kat is not that good. Don’t get distracted by DialIdol - they have 2 problems: 1) the software update that came out this week didn’t anticipate the 3 numbers in use, so it’ll miss 33% of the calls. 2) It doesn’t take into account text votes cast. 3) Remember the time difference. Kat’s voters are west coasties, so her votes come in late. That, and phone congestion in the Atlantic phone systems cost Chris last week.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Hey Deidre…:-)..yes, Kat missed a lyric in R Kelley’s song. That’s what Mike is talking about at the top of the blog. I heard it too while she was singing. At this point, looks like Taylor will take it all. Which I don’t mind. I could sit through one of his concerts before Kat…even though I think you said you liked her best? I was a bit disappointed in tonight program. I loved Katherine’s OVer the Rainbow… Hands down the best performance of the evening. But considering all song choices, I do believe that Taylor will be number 1. Elliot did no favors for himself tonight. So, I think it just comes down to popularity. All in All the 3 could win, and it would not be a bad choice. Go AI

I absolutely do NOT agree with you, Mike and I’ve got it on tape. The backups were singing the chorus and she didn’t join them when she picked it up, she embellished what they were doing. It was part of the arrangement for the song.

By ptrap

Katharine did end up butchering Fly..but didn’t she kind of have something going there, just at the beginning? Her voice sounded different, she was singing deeper than usual and I thought “Hey, Clive schooled her and said Quit with the Screaming”. But then she flubbed and flipped her hair and it was ruined. BUT, but…Somewhere Over the Rainbow almost made me tear up (did anyone see that 2 hr Judy Garland special last night? What timing…what a performer!). I will forgive her the poser-ness on the floor. She paid homage and wore red shoes. And it was beautiful.

BUT…Taylor sang three solid songs. “Tenderness” was rockin’, and he portrayed all the longing in that song. So even though he isn’t marketable, and he’s kind of weird, and he name-called “Soul Patrol” way too many times (at least he wants to win!) he should win. I hope. Elliot doesnt even factor in because he is one dimensional, albeit a good one dimension, but he sounds the same, no matter what he is singing.

Hey KimmyG!!! Well..have been trying to dial in and get nothing but that annoying enh, enh, enh!!! Will keep tryin. Taylor did aight for himself tonight which I’m surprised to hear myself say. And Simon wasn’t the only pimp…it doesn’t help when Clive Davis jumps ahead to the finish line by declaring “and when we make a record together” as he did with Kat…he didn’t do it with Tay or E-Train.

If you are not voting for talent alone you are wrong!! This is not America’s Next Playboy Bunny. It is voter’s like you that have sent previous idols home, who should not have left so early. This has proven my point that the voting system should change next year. People are thinking this is a joke, and voting for the sexiest person. That is OK KAT fans, your no singing, saggen puppies, i want to be a stipper will go home with he
