1/9: Idol in TV Guide

There’s a phone press conference with Simon Cowell later at 2 p.m. EST. If you have any questions you’d like me to ask, email me at rho@ajc.com. I’ll post the best quotes as soon as possible.

tv%20guide%20cover%202008.jpg

In a cover story for next week’s TV Guide, Simon admitted that season six was a letdown. “Last year just wasn’t good enough,” he said. Even Paula said, “I don’t remember hardly anyone (from) last year.” Ken Warwick: “There was not quite the buzz or magic.” We all knew that, eh?

Paula and Simon repeat that it’s going to be a stronger season than last year. That wouldn’t seem like too tough of a stretch. Simon also says he hates contestants who are not in it to win it all. (Blake said he didn’t care if he won or not. Chris Sligh said he was happy to make it on tour by landing in the top 10.)

Other barely notable bits from the story: Paula did pranks on the other judges while they were on the road. In Miami, Randy DJed when the guys went clubbing. In Philly, a luxury dealership let them drive around in an Astor Martin and Lamborghini (though certainly Simon could afford those!).

They let all the contestants stay through the first two rounds and only cut before the final Hollywood round, a change from past practice. And as noted, they got to play instruments if they wanted.

They’ll be a new stage and as noted before, fewer mentors.

Here is the Taylor Hicks statement on his myspace page about going independent.:

To all my fans and The Soul Patrol, I want to take a moment to talk about the recent news that my label and I have mutually parted ways. The important thing for all of you to remember is that I’ve been a working musician my whole life. This is turning the page on a new chapter of my career. Artistic freedom and control is an exciting prospect. The things that are most important to me is creating my art, performing it, and my fans. With the momentum that all of you have created over the years, Taylor Hicks is not going to stop anytime soon. I’ve started working on the new album, writing and scheduling exciting collaborations. The DVD, Whomp at the Warfield, is in it’s final stages, and will be released soon. So as one door closes, a new one opens for 2008 with more excitement for all my fans than ever before. Sit tight, because the best is yet to come!

And Jessica Sierra received rehab in a year-long treatment center in California, according to a thorough story on Tampa Bay Online Web site.

Judge Daniel Perry probably won’t be too pleased with her first stint in rehab being on that VH1 show after these comments:

“I don’t want this to be some sort of stepping stone for her to have some sort of a career as a recovering addict,” Perry said. “I don’t want her giving interviews. I don’t want her on TV. I don’t want anybody glamorizing the fact that she’s a drug addict. I’m over that.”

Sierra has been jailed since a Dec. 1 incident in Ybor City, where she was arrested for misdemeanor disorder.

The Pasadena Recovery Center will pay for her entire year there in treatment, probably for the publicity.

Good morning bloggers.

I’d read the TV Guide article on Monday. It’s very easy for the judges to say it wasn’t the best season…after the fact. To be honest, the talent was pretty good but non-charismatic. Simon has been right all along when he tells a contestant they don’t look the part, but wrong about why. It doesn’t have much to do with how much they weigh or how nerdy they look. It has to do with a relationship they develop with the audience.

Idol stopped relationships from developing last year. We have to embrace these kids if we’re going to enjoy the season. They have to capture our emotions. THEN we’ve got a pretty good season.

Morning, y’all!

D, I agree. The contestants really didn’t click with the audience. And I’m waiting until Season 7 ends…they always say it’s gonna be better than the ones before, and it rarely is!

WE, 9th?! How the hell did you manage that? ;) JK

Good Morning Mushblog! How are you all doing? I thought this past year was pretty boring in comparison to earlier years. I didn’t feel like any of them really wanted to be THE American Idol.
With regards to Taylor, he really needs a special record company because of his type of music and especially his style. He is a live performer, rather than a studio performer - that’s just my opinion, of course.

Morning D, and Kelly.

Kelly, We are only losing 5 starters this year. The team will still be a little young but alot more experienced.

LOL!!! I like ‘mushblog’. Do y’all get the feeling, when you hit the ‘post’ key, that your comment has to move through a vat of thick molasses before it appears?

I DO like that we’ve got some new people popping in more often at this place. I guess we were kinda in our own little sanctified world and now we’re out in public again. If we could get the danged speed fixed…I think I’d be just fine here.

The reason AI sucked last year is because of lack of diversity. There was no real rock stlye contestant such as a Daughtry or even BO. There was no real countrty singer such as a Carrie, Kellie, or even Bucky. Country music is as big or bigger than any other genra, and is still growing. Except for bald headed Phil who wasn’t really sure what style of music he was singing almost everyone else was either pop or R&B. And then we had Sanjaya. The show needs representation from all genras to be successful.

By Deirdre

January 9, 2008 9:01 AM | Link to this

But you have to admit, War Eagle, Phil started to shine(and no, I don’t mean his head) when he sang country. He had a flare for country and might have done better if started leaning toward country earlier in the season(and stopped wearing the stupid hats)

WE, that’s not bad at all. We’ll see what happens when we go over to your house on November 15th. I was just looking at our schedule…is it fall yet?! I cannot wait! :)

Guess the Braves will have to tide me over…but we’re still a month away from Spring Training. What’s a girl to do?

Yesterday I made a joke about washing my hair while waiting for my comment to post…that was an exaggeration, obviously but….I have hit the post key, taken my dog outside, waited for him to pee and sniff whatever it is he finds so frickin interesting in the grass, come back inside, given him his treat, and returned to the computer to find my comment hadn’t posted yet! I mean, seriously!!!!!!! What is so hard about having a site that moves just a little quicker!!!???

This site used to be quicker…then about 3 months before we moved to heaven, it started slowing down like this. I remember telling Rodney back then that the delays for posting had made conversation really difficult. Back then, I thought it was because they were putting together our new place but apparently that’s not the case

Can someone that is more technically advanced than I am give me some information about TiVo. Like how much does the service cost a month and is it worth it. How much does the box cost.

Thank You, I’ll check in a bout 4 hours when this post.

truth is … life can be so complicated and confusing! On the one hand, here we sit, running the gamut from the beginning throes of an election year to a new season of reality tv, including AI; hearing horrible news items such as the senseless and gut-wrenching murder of a lovely young lady who was just beginning her life, on the one hand, and debating who will win Amazing Race, or America’s Next Top Model, or American Idol or who’s the TRUE BSC #1 team, on the other. TRUTH is… life goes on, and we learn to cope with the bad, and treasure the good.

Sorry to get so philosophical on you guys… maybe it’s the weather, it’s just sort of a “brooding” day… When people ask me why i watch American Idol, because it’s “so mindless” i remind them that EVERYONE needs to rest and relax from the stresses and horrors and tensions of the “real world” and that AI is just ONE of the ways that I allow my mind to turn down the burner underneath and stretch and yawn and laugh and even sometimes almost cry (in frustration, maybe?) about something NOT so life-critical! Most of us who chat here also read, write, create in other ways, work — and work HARD — and deal with families, friends, tragedies, and life in general, along with the good things that we are treated to…

it’s just good to know, sometimes, that I am allowed to turn off the intensity and sit back and relax among friends, enjoy a bit of “fluff” and maybe, just maybe, discover a bit of talent in the world that will make my life a bit nicer! (like Carrie Underwood, imho, and Bucky and Daughtry and Melinda and … others!)

ok…. deep sh** is over, i promise to be more light-hearted later when i return, LOL!!!

Truth is… i’m grateful for the relationships and friendships that have come my way, and sorry that there are some that didn’t last. life goes on.

I don’t have tivo but…the boxes start at $100 and the monthly service fee starts at $8.31. If you have cable, I recommend that you get a dvr cable box..it works the same as tivo, mostly, and the average cost is less especially if you’re paying for cable already. It depends on your cable company whether or not you can get a dvr box.

OK…the time thingy is weird too. I hit the post key for my previous post at, according to my watch, 10:10am on the nose. It SAYS it posted at 10:12 BUT according to my watch…it took 4 minutes and 25 seconds to appear, making it nearly 10:15.

Rodney must know the right people. My post are taking 3 to 5 minutes. Maybe we should E-Mail all our post directly to Rodney and then he could post them all. It would take just as long.

Just kidding with you Rodney, we know that you have no control over the speed of the post. We were just spoiled on the other blog. I don’t miss the code guy though.

Thanks for the info D. I will check into it. My DVD recorder went out on me and I was never really impressed with it in the first place.

Here’s a little item from msnbc.com:

With only a week to go before the new season of “American Idol,” little things like airport meltdowns from judges — specifically Paula Abdul — become very newsworthy.

“She had an insane nervous breakdown that lasted 10 minutes,” a tipster told Radaronline.com of a scene at the Continental Airlines terminal at LAX over the holidays.

“One minute she was hyperventilating and on the verge of passing out; the next she was yelling into her cell phone in this deep, rage-filled ‘Poltergeist’ voice. She kept screaming three names over and over — Michael, Sidney and Leslie. Everyone was staring at her, but she didn’t care.”

There used to be a delay, linny, but it was hardly ever more than a minute. These long delays started during the off-season before we got the new format. And since the other blogs don’t have this long a delay…there’s obviously a problem with this one!

I don’t know if this has been posted anywhere but we mentioned cue-ball head Phil earlier.

American Idol Season 6 finalist Phil Stacey will release his debut single “If You Didn’t Love Me” to country radio this coming Monday, January 7. With his debut album scheduled for an April 2008 release, Phil’s single is produced by Wayne Kirkpatrick (Little Big Town) and written by Wendell Mobley, Jason Sellers, and Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox.

eggzackly, Amy!!! First of all… would YOU (generic) support your husband who was a known philanderer and womanizer, even (so-to-speak) bringing HOME (ok the oval office) his play-mating? And D, i love your “she pretends to be one” (moderate) … and it depends, imho, on what day of the week, what time of day, what time of the month, what year, what minute, it is as to what her given position on something is, too.

No, I’m not a Walking Eagle fan, and won’t be a fan of ANY woman candidate just because she’s a woman … i’d be delighted to have a woman in office, but i want it to be someone willing to stand for something besides her ability to bend with the wind!

Hola good peoples —- I do exist!!! Just been working a lot.

Anyway, hope everyone had a great Christmas and New years. Looking forward to the new season firing up!

Has anyone seen the Fox news story about Paula? Supposedly she suffered a Nervous Breakdown over the holidays. Wonder how that might affect the upcoming season. Guess she will be even more out of it than usual - oh joy.

As for yesterday’s news — I think the Taylor/J Records split was a mutual decision and not a straight DROP. The biggest thing to notice is that 19 Entertainment did not drop Taylor. I think this was a philosophical breakup in which Taylor wanted control over what songs went on the album, and J records did not want to give him that control.
