2/19: Alexandrea Lushington interview, Idol rewind, Josiah Leming update
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I wrote a print edition piece for today summarizing my three interviews with Michael Johns, Carly Smithson and Alexandrea Lushington here..

Alexandrea Lushington could be this year’s local Diana DeGarmo. She’s only 17 and has performed many a National Anthem at local ballgames, just like Diana. She grew up mostly in College Park and only her sophomore year moved to Douglasville. So I don’t anticipate she’ll be pushing the “Douglasville” angle as much as Diana promoted Snellville. She’s now a junior at Douglas County High School, though obviously she probably is going to miss most if not all of this semester if she makes the top 10.
She was my last interview at about 6:15 p.m. EST Friday. She was clearly distracted as she was getting ready to rehearse in Los Angeles. There was a lot of background noise and I had to repeat questions a few times. Her answers were fairly short, too. So as I went over my notes, I realized I didn’t have much at all. I figured I spoke with her for less than 10 minutes compared to 15 minutes with Michael and 20 minutes with Carly.
Alexandrea began singing at age 2 or 3, said she wanted to be part of “Sesame Street” at age 5. Both her parents are musical; her mom was in a gospel group, he dad studied music at a Brooklyn conservatory. She said she performed at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem at age 7. She sang Jackson 5’s “Who’s Lovin’ You” and made it on stage twice. “The stage looked huge to me. Now when I looked back, it’s kind of small,” she said. She also did National Anthem work with Georgia Tech, the Atlanta Fire Department (her dad was a firefighter, her mom her agent/assistant), the Braves and the Hawks, to name a few.
She attended school in College Park until sophomore year of high school when she moved to Douglasville and attends Douglas County High School (better school system).
Her great grandmother, 94 years old, got more airtime than she did during the Atlanta audition episode. “She’s at the peak of her life,” Alexandrea said. “I’m glad Ryan liked her.” She said 20 people came to her audition.
As for her lack of airtime, “I can’t be disappointed not getting a lot of airtime. I’m just glad I have made it this far. They can’t help but give me airtime right now! It really doesn’t bother me. I’m focusing on my next performance.”
She said she loves all kinds of music— soul and rock & roll. Then she got cut off and the conversation abruptly ended.
UPDATE: I just heard she actually competed against David Archuleta on “Star Search” a few years back. Here’s the proof.
Onto other topics: I caught “American Idol Rewind” from this past weekend and it was the night Charles Grigsby was eliminated with the appropriately titled “Wiz” song “You Can’t Win.” He really wasn’t very good but seeing him five years later in an interview, I just can’t believe how much hair the poor guy lost. These performances simply solidified why Clay (“Somewhere Out There”) and Ruben (“A Whole New World”) would finish in the top 2 and why Julia DeMato would be eliminated the next week with her so-so take on “Flashdance.” Ruben, at this point, was really pimping out the “205” Birmingham shirts.
And do you wish Josiah Leming had made it? He was definitely an interesting story but he may not have been quite ready emotionally to handle the competition.

Access Hollywood caught up with him and I anticipate he will get a few more minutes of fame.
“My belief is that they were trying to make me look bad. They were trying to make me look like a crybaby and then trying to make me look like I was overconfident - but I’m thankful. If I could see them right now, I would give them the biggest hug ever because they have launched my career.”
It’s true! Josiah told me, thanks to this publicity, he has sold over 1,000 albums on his MySpace page and has earned himself a cool $9,000 in the process. Not a bad take for a kid who lives in his car. Although, he doesn’t live there anymore, Josiah tells me. It sounds like those days are over. Mostly, it’s because his car is broken down. Not to worry. A local car dealership in his hometown of Morristown, Tennessee has come to the rescue and offered him a car to borrow while he pursues his dreams.
Plus, it gets better. The President of Fox has called him and requested a meeting about casting him for something else and “The Ellen Degeneres Show” is flying him out on Monday to perform on the show.
Need more? MTV.com has him gabbing and gabbing about himself. There’s even video.
And his appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”:
Finally, Carrie Underwood is performing this Saturday on the first post-strike “Saturday Night Live” featuring Tina Fey as the guest host.

whew…new thread, thanks Rodney! Sorry you were so handicapped in your interview with Alex Lushington, i was interested to learn more about her since she was so short-changed on the audition shows.. oh well.. maybe they’ll make it up a bit later if she makes it to the top 10!
Team Bruno took top honors, much to my dismay. While i agree they were perhaps more “talented” in straight singing and dancing, i felt Team Carrie Anne had MUCH more personality, charisma, and charm, and they were darned good at singing and dancing too, lol.
Dancing with the Stars - Stars were announced tonight, don’t remember all, but the likes of Marlee Matlin, who’s deaf for those who don’t recognize the name, Kristy Yamaguchi (ice skater), Penn of Penn & Teller, a hunk of a football player from Miami, a latin Telemundo star (hunk!), Monica Seles (tennis), Mario (NOT lopez) the singer, and a few others, topped off by… 62 year old Priscilla Presley. Yes you read that right. Lisa Marie’s MOM will be competing. And to my HUGE dismay, it was reported that Macsim will NOT be dancing with the Stars this season. Booohoooo! I guess none of the women were Amazonic enough for him to stay, lol (a la’ Layla Ali and MelB) I’m frankly afraid that PP is so bo-toxed up she’ll break if she has to bend… sorry yes that was catty of me!

Morning mushblogians!
Word of warning….Rodney has a large article about the Atlanta connection in the print edition today and we are still linked from ajc.com although the link is a little less obvious.
Rodney, thanks for the editing of yesterday’s idiot. It could have said all that ONCE and made a much better(well, maybe not much) impression.

My answer to young Josiah’s “They tried to make me look bad” statement….Was that you crying or was it an actor? Please come back in a year or 2 when you get your life together. You’re very talented and deserve a shot, sometime in the future.

Ouch!!! WE….didn’t your mama ever tell you that dating someone else’s girl can get you in a heap o’ trouble?
Y’all already know that I’m a big Michael Johns fan but I’m looking forward to hearing the guys we don’t know tonight. Luke, Jason, the guy whose name sounds like ‘cheesie’(I’m not being rude, I just don’t know how to spell or pronounce it yet).
So I’m focusing on the guys today since they’re singing first. Then the boys on here(and kf)can have their day tomorrow.

I would like to hear what some of the guys that weren’t pimped have to offer. Like Jason Castro with the dreds, Luke Menard I don’t remember and Chickezie who I saw only briefly.

HI y’all, good morning!
Linny, I kind of liked Team Bruno. I was a little fond of Zack for some reason…and I don’t know about you, but I was quite underwhelmed with the new DWTS cast. I guess we’ll see, but no Maks! Tear
AI: Maybe Alex Lushington will get a little more comfortable and make your job easier, Rodney. :) Oh, and thanks for the heads up on Carrie. Setting up that Tivo ASAP…
D and Linny, y’all get your day today. I’m hoping I make it home in time to watch. Otherwise, I guess there’s youtube. I’ve started to hear some about Luke, I wanna hear him sing!
Boys, we get tomorrow…and I made sure not to have other plans so I don’t miss it.
Oh, btw, ET last night had the whole “Carly Hennesssy Smithson” had a record deal controversy on their show. Guess the word is starting to spread. It’ll be interesting to see how Idol handles it. Since I get the feeling that she’s the early “pimped” contestant.

Carly definitely got a lot of ‘on-air’ attention but she has an interesting story. Like I said before, I’m interested in hearing the other people and Carly is not high on my list.
Ms Lillie, a lot of us here are very interested in hearing what Alex sounds like…we’ve heard good things about her.

morning MushBloggians…I too am underwhelmed except by Marlee Matlin and Kristy Yamaguchi, and the Latin Hottie… and whew that one picture they showed of the Miami Dolphin reclining on a hammock… fan fan fan… LOL. But overall, and knowing that Maksim will not be back (sorry i misspelt it earlier)…meh… not as excited as last year, for sure!
I liked Zack, didn’t like Philip, wanted Tony to stay instead, liked Lacy, didn’t particularly like blondie. But i really enjoyed the performances by TCA much more than TBruno. I wonder what WILL happen to those kids… they were ALL good.
ok, work already piled up, so i’ll see you guys later, towards lunchtime!

I read somethings about Robbie Carrico
In 1999 and 2000, Carrico sang with Boyz-N-Girlz United, an Orlando boy/girl band that didn’t have quite the run of hometown favorites ‘N Sync.
Carrico traded pop for the rock band Missing Picket. He also brushed alongside fame while dating a pre-meltdown Britney Spears. (His band opened for her Baby One More Time tour.)
I relate this to a statement I made yesterday about how much of a disadvantage that the true undiscovered talent has this year. There are just too many semi- professionals with a great deal of stage experience.
By kellyfan
February 19, 2008 9:49 AM | Link to this
WE, Tru dat! I know they are making a big deal about how they’ve never said you couldn’t have experience, etc. But it just doesn’t seem like a fair setup for me. I mean, I guess talent is talent, but if they keep stacking the pool….are we ever going to find someone like Carrie? She’d never even been on a plane pre-Idol, much less done a CD.
But that’s JMHO, Carly’s not really on my list…and I’m not planning on voting for her.
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,
February 19, 2008 10:16 AM | Link to this
The true gems like Carrie will find a way to shine regardless, i think; MOST people who are talented enough to make it into the finals MUST have had SOME kind of exposure to the profession, whether it’s live performances, recording (success or failure), something… even if only at a local level. You KNOW carrie underwood was known for her signing around her Oklahoma home… just not nationally, and this was her window of opportunity. If you want PURE amateur competition, you are going to get 95% PURE AMATEURS… you don’t usually make it to 17,18-27,28 without ANY exposure to the performing world. One of Simon’s most common complaints is the “bedroom musician” who “caterwauls to a record while watching him/her self in a mirror in their bedroom” … and whose family and friends tell them they’re soooooo good… probably more hoping to shut them up than anything else!
the contestants who sing in church, sing at school, perform in school or church or local drama productions, dance in recitals, take singing lessons and perform on stage or MORE likely to be exposed to at least some level of professional work, and thus WILL likely have more chance to have had an agent, had a career possibly open up, maybe even at some point, a la Michaels and Smithson, had a contract or a recording session… or even an “album” …
I am quite sure that AI took into account the likelihood that Taylor Hicks (who was a performer on local tours at the time of his audition), Chris Daughtry, (same), Diana DeGarmo (a high school student who’d performed publicly and on stage), etc etc etc, Michael Lee Johns, Carly Hennessy Smithson, et al, would be part of the competitions if they did not limit it to purely amateurs who’d NEVER been under any sort of Professional Agreement, Contract, Performance, etc.
I personally do not think i would have watched many nights of pure amateurs. Remember the Gong Show?
just a thought—a scattered rambling thought that was interrupted about 6 times with 4-letter-word-beginning-with-W, sorry about that!

Seems like we have some Davids against Goliaths, so to speak in this competition. How else could you compare say, Alexandrea Lushington whose biggest moment to date is performing in an amateur competition at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem at age 7 against someone who opened for one of Brittney’s biggest tours,or someone that had a record label sunk over 2 million dollars into only to fail.
I always have liked to pull for the underdog

Here’s my opinion on the amateur vs pro issue…..I know y’all have been waiting to hear it! :-)
I think there are very few Idol contestants over the past 7 years who have had NO experience. The ones who have only played the lead in their high school musicals are few and far between. Most past winners have, at the very least, performed publicly, on stage before they auditioned for the show. Elliot is the only one who comes to mind who had NEVER done ANYTHING before.
That being said….this year seems to have an abundance of semi-pros. I think that’s because the ratings are sinking a bit and it was VERY important to the show to get some kids up on stage who know what they are doing.
3 We complained bitterly about the lack of experience and talent last year. So we can’t have it both ways. We either want to watch people who can sing AND perform or we want a bunch of Sanjayas up there.
Bottom line…if he/she is the best singer, he/she will get my vote, no matter what previous experience they’ve had. Or where they come from(sorry WE, couldn’t resist) :-)

HEY HEY HEY D, don’t start with me!! LOL!!!!
My thing is AI claims to have at least 100,000 people audition evey year. Now I’m no one special but I think that Me, D, Linny and flatts to add a little something extra to the show, could find 24 people out of 100,000 that would be deserving of a first chance and not a second, third or even fourth chance.

AI has only shown what they want us to see regarding each contestant. We talk about how good the talent is without actually seeing with our own eyes an UNEDITED performance. I think we have all jump the gun a little. I’ll wait until I see for myself before I fall for what AI has presented me with to this point. There have been some contestants that have been well exposed that went belly up for one reason or another.

I mean, I’m definitely an amateur, but NO one will ever want to hear me sing. :) I guess it comes to be a fine line…I do agree that now’s when it really gets interesting. We’ll see who is left standing.
Oh, and Carly’s the one who is getting the brunt of the backlash so far…but Kristy Lee Cook isn’t that far behind. There’s a video on youtube that doesn’t really paint a pretty picture. Here’s the link for y’all:

WE I understand your “experienced v. inexperienced” argument … EXCEPT … once the great unwashed begin to vote, it really don’t matter much WHAT your background is!!!
I also agree a gazillion percent on the “watching an UNEDITED performance.” Put the camera on, one angle, front and center… sing to me boy/girl … let me watch you move, emote, be charismatic, listen to you sing… do you pull me in or push me away. no glitzy camera angles from up above or down below, no smoke and mirrors, no flashy disco lights. SING to me… perform so that i want to hear MORE…
i’ve said for a LONG time, you can go back and see, that the Editor/Director element of the “competition” will mean as much if not MORE than the actual talent of a person, since the E/D connection is what picks what WE see. They want us to see an emotional Josiah, we won’t SEE the mature moments, the calm moments, the intense work and practice and striving… we’ll see tears and temper, arrogance (which might just be bravado after all) … pimp Carly up, pimp Josiah down, for example. We’re fed what they want us to see. The ONLY way to see “reality” is to be there, like a fly on the wall, watching, listening, and judging, and since NONE of us is capable of doing that for 24 people simultaneously…. meh… we gratefully and mindlessly yield our own judgment right to the Director and Editor and trust them to do us right.
Yeah. Right.

I gotta tell y’all I don’t trust the “The Truth About” videos that are popping up on youtube, Who’s to say that they are telling the truth? Why would we trust some anonymous yokel who seems to have it in for anybody with credentials?
This is the second one I’ve seen and I think they are being put out by someone who is in the top 24 or representatives of a top 24’er. OR they are being put together by a hate group similar to VFTW.

I can see the Ford thing as a real problem except…she doesn’t sing in the commercial, or speak. And frequently, the sponsor has very little to do with the choosing of the actor.I actually can speak from second hand experience on this…Mr Hollywood has cast a couple of commercials. The sponsor relies on the casting people to choose any unknowns. The sponsor is usually VERY hands-on when it comes to celebrities but not unknowns.
By Deirdre
