2/21: 1st four out - Garrett Haley, Amy Davis, Joanne Borgella, Colton Berry
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Idol bloggers picked Garrett “Leif Garrett” Haley to take his hair and go home and he was indeed the first one out. (I was not one of them initially but understood why people disliked him.) Breaking up with him was not hard to do.
They psyched out Kristy Lee Cook by having her come up but then cut Amy Davis, the least surprising pick. Everyone agreed she was abysmal last night. Combined with a lack of airtime and it was over. She does “Where the Boys Are” one more time and again, she misses more notes than she hits. Pretty gal, wrong song.
Third out: “Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance” plus-sized model winner Joanne Borgella, who had not a prayer. They created faux tension by placing her next to Amanda Overmyer. But we knew who was going home. Another pretty gal with an indistinguished performance. Being the second one up didn’t help her either. (Ramiele looks devastated as Joanne sings “Say a Little Prayer” again!)
Fourth out is a minor shocker (especially paired with Chikezie): Colton Berry. He wasn’t on anybody’s radar to go compared to the first three but didn’t have a serious chance of winning either. Honestly, we all thought Luke, Jason Y. and Chikezie did worse. He sang ninth, which isn’t a bad spot either. In the end, he got virtually no airtime. I thought his Elvis cover of “Suspicious Minds” was good but obviously not good enough. I bet it was really really close in terms of vote count. (Ramiele, with Kady by her side, is crying again as he bows out!)
The episode also featured the Paula Abdul video for “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” which you can see in yesterday’s blog entry. It’s clear from her limited dance moves that she can’t do what she used to 20 years ago. Blame serious back problems. She still looks good.
Group sing was the usual cheesefest. I did enjoy the 60s wigs and dress. I didn’t pay terrible close attention to individual singing.
Based on blog feedback, it also appears a lot of folks really didn’t like Amanda. And Carly is about as polarizing as it gets. And could Danny Noriega be this year’s Sanjaya?
In other Idol news:
Jordin Sparks is in Ghana hanging out with the prez.
One blogger thinks Michael Johns lip-synced Tuesday.

I’m going to embarrass myself right off the bat and tell y’all that i use to own at least half the outfits the girls wore in the group sing…..boots included!
If they’re all lip synching , as the article suggests…how come they all hit sour notes…even Michael!?

The closeness of the competitors as they live and work together week after week makes it hard, especially on the younger ones, i believe, Chatta… so, no it doesn’t surprise or bother me. And i may be wrong, but i think you’ll see less of the crying for others when we get down to about, oh, 6-8 people competing, lol. reality will hit home by then.
No surprise for me that Garrett and Amy go, nor really, unfortunately for me, Joanne (because i’ll say it again, i liked her and think she had more to offer, a la her goodbye performance). I WAS surprised that Colton bit the dust so fast, but not because i wanted him to stay. He was one of my LEAST favorites from the get-go.
Remember a few days back someone, and i apologize i don’t remember who, said that the last picked (Joanne and Colton this year) had been in the two previous years ousted at around #16. This year there was no waiting for either, they were in last, and out first. I just wish that Danny had gone first, because i fear he will be our Sanjaya this year, and i just don’t think he’s all that good to stay. But then neither was Sanjaya, was he. sigh
see you guys tomorrow!

What’s with all the hating on Danny? He sounded pretty good in all his singing prior to the top 24. Is everyone just hating cause he’s not exactly butch? I mean, he can sing better than at least 5 of the guys left. I think he will easily make the top 12. But David Cook, Chikezie, Jason Y, Luke, and Robbie Carrico can all go away!

I have to say I’m a bit disappointed… I truly believe Joanne deserved another shot and although I really like Amanda, her performance last night, for me, deserved to be voted off, honestly. I don’t care how much I like someone I cannot stand that every week.
And Colton I think should have stayed because he’s stronger than some others…What is with Simon being so rude? I don’t care if he’s honest “You won’t be successful” “Joanne that was your worst performance”…hey, at least he clapped. And at least my votes may have helped Joanne at least not get the lowest votes ;)
I can’t stand much longer of the unknown Jason Yeager or Luke Menard either…as long as they stay so quiet and weak…
AND last but not least…here proves my prediction that Kristy will close the show with a bang next week lol
But all in all at least America is getting rid of people who most predict would not be in the top 12 anyways.

Ok even more proof that performance nights are likely to not be live is unless it was me i’m almost sure i heard Joanne slip out something about her performance “My performance on SUNDAY—” and then someone said something, then when it was her time to talk again she changed her word to WEDNESDAY… Am I digging to far into this? The elimination went exactly as I predicted, I’m at 100% so far this year. It was a bit risky for me to say that two girls and two guys would be eliminated, but I stood by and it and was proven correct.
I knew Colton would not make the top 12. Last year it seemed that half of the 24 were chaff to make the good singers look better, this year the only one I have thought that about was Colton. However, I thought he would be #14 or #13 for the guys.
Now I’m happy that we may have a group of 20 that has far fewer weak links than last year. It still remains to be seen if there is anyone better, next week bring on the WOW performances.

Well we know that they run dress rehearsals on performance days. Those vocals could be used for iTunes. However, I don’t think that the producers would be so quick to torpedo their cash cow by using lip syncing or taping the show a day or three in advance. Besides, there would be too many witnesses. Remember, it may not be about the music, but it is about the money. America pretends to really hate lip syncing, so I can’t see Idol taking that risk.

To settle one thing right off - YES THE SEMIFINAL SHOWS ARE TAPED IN ADVANCE. I am not sure they are taped on Sunday, but A.I. said last year that the girls and the guys are taped back to back on the same day so everyone gets into the same routine. The vote off is done live.
The top 12 shows are Live on the East coast and CT, tape delayed for other time zones.
I nailed 3 of the 4 vote offs, Joanne, Amy, Garrett — but like Rodney I had Colton ahead of Chikezie, Jason Y and even Danny the wonder brat.

Danny Noriega…Sing, don’t talk! You have a good singing voice, but you talk and act like a ghetto-girl. Sanjaya had the little girl fans, who’s Danny’s biggest fans? Sick, old men?

I think most of us were pretty sure about Amy, Joanne and Garrett. I know lots of people thought Chikezie would go but I had a feeling he’ll be around a little while. He’s got that “feel good” charisma, and folks like that, even when the singing isn’t QUITE up to par. He may not make it to 12, if he doesn’t up his game this week, however, and i think he knows it. Rodney, Mike, anyone—any word on IF there is a theme next week and if so, what?
With Danny, i think more than anything what bothers me is he cocky attitude. It reminds me a little too much of last year’s malingerer (pun: mal=bad, lingerer=person who stuck around; i know he wasn’t a bad person) so he’s sort of got my NO vote from the get-go. I KNOW we are supposed to vote/evaluate based on what they DO, but… personality plays a part in the whole picture, so…
see you guys later!

I think America got it pretty right. Amanda got a well deserved scare, and she better pay heed to the message because another identical performance will send her packing. Sorry to see Joanne go, I actually liked her voice compared to some of the others. Amy was abysmal, and had to be the first to go…despite her hotness.
Guys sidfe was on the money, too. I think Leaf was given a bit too harsh treatment, though. I liked his voice, but I think he was just a little too wispy and meek to make it.
My thrill of the night was seeing Colt get booted (sorry Randy). I think he just sucked, was boring, and had nothing idol worthy about him at all. A future lounge singer at best.
On to the next round, when we can expect Danny to come out with a brand new hairdo and a flamboyant costume…

Negativo, I agree that Simon was way too harsh on Garrett. The kid needed to leave but he could have gone with just a tad more self-esteem left intact!
I still want to hear what Danny sounds like. I think he’s lucky he didn’t get the boot and has a chance to redeem himself. Let’s see if he does!

Good morning y’all!
Well, not surprised with the results. I went 4-for-4…but it’s early and it’s easier to do.
My best friend had picked Jason, Garrett, Amy, and Joanne. I missed Jason’s performance, but saw the recap last night. He could stay next week if he chooses a better song. Otherwise, I see Chikezie and Luke going home.
As far as the girls, it was a pretty clear choice…glad people got that right. Amy’s early audition was pretty good, but she just never delivered. They should’ve put Pilot Lindsey on instead of her…anyone else remember her? (WE…you should. LOL)

p.s. Pam — honey, the idea is that two boys and two girls go home each of the first three weeks, until we are left with the “final 12”. that’s sort of the point. AND, while i agree that Joanne shouldn’t have gone, that’s MY opinion because i just LIKED her, lol. she did not perform at her best … and it IS a competition! Pam, sweetie… it’s like life… we don’t always agree with or like what is dealt to us, but we have to keep on keeping on… if you decide to compete with someone, one of you is going to “win” and the other “lose” … but in this, all 24 at really winners, because at least out of tens of thousands, they made it to the “big stage” and got some exposure… now it’s up to them to make the best of it!
but, Pam — and others! — keep on commenting here, and let us know how you feel about stuff each week… your opinions are just as valuable as ANY one’s opinions :-) welcome to the blog!

Hmmm..well I would have bet my lunch money(thats all I would offer for this lot) that Not all Big african american females cant sing(Johanne)would be axed. Chikeze should have been there as well but I didnot see the other guys bad performances until last night which clearly proved my theory that atleast 8 should have been packed to go home. But I understand that would make the show shorter and Fox is trying to Milk the Cow(Idol and reality shows Dry! OMG the greedy Hogs! Personally there only about maybe 4 that really show some Real talent! dont blame nerves blame those vocal chops! You either got it or you dont. Most of them dont sound near as good as folks I see every day on the street as for having a nice tone to their voices. Again I say, after over 100,000 contestants this is the best? I think its time for some New Judges especially since they picked the final 24. I can NOT believe this is the Best of our nation. Maybe many folks just didnt even try out for fear they arent good enough. Sad we will never know because we got all these bad tone deaf folks thinking they really really sound good. Paula Abdul video. critque There were a few pitch problems she did sound like a cross between Roger Troutman and some-type of computor created cyber space artifical vocal mixed with heavy, whats that instrumental machine Eric Clapton uses where it makes your voice sound funny..like a living computor.. she looked beautiful, but I dont think shes quite ready for the big time, sorry dear I have to past, but you looked beautiful. greg, honey, it’s a reference to the mushy, slow, sticky, soggy way the blog responds in this format, not about any person or persons, LOL! and they were crying because their new friends were voted off the show… you’ll see that every week, now that you’ve joined us in watching ~¿@

Yeah, I know. All you youngsters are growing up in this ridiculous PC time, when everyone should go out of their way to avoid hurting anyone’s feewings. Don’t point out or even recognized differences. And for God’s sake don’t judge behavior! The liberals wouldn’t like that. Danny’s a freakin’ weirdo gay, but you’ve been told that “it’s ok”, and characters representing homosexuals appear in every sitcom and movie that comes out so you’ll get lulled into accepting it. And, of course, you do.

racebaiter, get over yourself. No one cares about what you are saying. I guess we should accept your racist, homophobe opinions instead of the medias. I think they kill gays over in iraq and afghanistan and that is a great place for you to live. Go for it. You can probably take part in some stonings over there if you are lucky

Morning all,
I’ll bite… how does anyone know that Danny is gay? Last time I checked to be gay you need to be a man who enjoys having sex with other men, that hasn’t been established with Danny. Being a snotty little putz with a lisp, girly hair, and crying at results show does not make you gay.
Unless of course you have some inside information… wink wink.

JTesla, you need more proof that Danny-boy’s gay? You sound like the fans of Wham in the 80s who just couldn’t understand why people thought George Michael was guy simply because he wore tight shorts and pranced around like a girl. Danny is SO gay, and his Elvis song was awful. Quit pushing gayness on the country, you PC media! And quit soaking it up, you gullible viewers!

Just you and me Flats. Are you talking about blonde #1, blonde #2, or blonde #3?
If anyone else stumbles through: what is the thought on the people that got the scare last night. Were Chikezie and Amanda the next lowest vote getters?

Awesome that paragraph makes my day right there.
I’m still waiting on the proof.
BTW, George Michael isn’t gay because he wore tight shirts, and he isn’t gay because he pranced around like a girl, he is gay because he is a guy who likes having sex with other guys. It’s really that simple. You PC media you!

JTesla…well said!
I’m saving my opinions on the matter ‘cause y’all know where I stand. ;)
On to the better topic, Kristy Lee…she looked nice last night. I’m not thinking she’ll stick around for too long, but we’ll see. Out of the “Blonde Trifecta,” Alaina and Kady are better, IMO. :)
By War Eagle
February 22, 2008 2:23 PM | Link to this
Hey KF we know where you stand and it’s cool with us. Alaina might be a dark horse in this competition. She’s young, got the voice and definantly has the looks. But it is going to be hard for her to get away from the Carrie comparisons. Kady will improve now that she has the first one under her belt as will some of the others.
As for the guys I’m starting like the dude with the dreads.

Yeah, the blondes are cute, but this is a talent show, not Miss America. Rameile, Ashia’h are very cute, and can sing better than the blondes. JMO.
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,
February 22, 2008 2:39 PM | Link to this
LOL…besides, Shaun, not EVERYONE prefers blondes, right? ~¿@ i mean… my hubby thinks redheads are MORE than the Bomb…they’re EVERYTHING…. still can’t figure out after 39 years how the heck I got picked by him!!!
He says that kristy and kady look too much like all the OTHER blonde sorority chicks he sees every day at work, so they don’t impress HIM at all… not Ramiele, he thinks SHE’s a cutie, and likes Syesha and Asia’h, i think he said.
and i’d bet there’s someone out there who thinks Danny is a hottie too, LOL!!! just not ME! not my type…actually the closest to “my type” this year is Robbie … now, to get an idea of what a hottie is to me, go back and look at Bo….
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMM!

Shaun, the thing I like about this year is that the girls that get my eye-candy vote are the same ones that get my talent vote… Rameile, Ashia’h, and Syesha.

That’s right Linny, I prefer Brunnettes and Red Heads always turn my head…. (watch out linny) lol.
JTesla, I agree, i think Rameile is so cute, IF i were to go blonde, it would be Kady for sure. Syesha is very cute too, and that woman can sing!!!!!!!

Linny, it sounds like your husband and I are on the exact same page when it comes to blondes and redheads.

I think Carly looks a lot “harder” than Amanda does, even with Amanda’s Biker Chick look. Well. Amanda IS a Biker Chick! Not someone who hangs on the back, either, she RIDES… Sort of wish i could be her, sometimes, hair flying out the back of a helmet (or helmetless if i’m feeling stupid/brave) rollin’ on 2 wheels down the stretches…. mmmmmm ok ok, so i’m a rocker girl at heart!!! i can scream like Janis too, but just not quite so in tune…er in pitch smirk
for those who haven’t noticed yet, new thread up…

Okay. Garrett Haley was the best Idol. I don’t really care about all the others… Garrett had a great voice, great hair, cute adorable boy, and good personality! WHAT’S WRONG WITH AMERICA?! Garrett should still be on American Idol!!! :P
