2/22: It’s Idol separated at birth! Zac Efron & David Archuleta? Michael Johns & Rocco DiSpirito?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Separated at birth!
Someone Friday noted the resemblance between Ted Lange (Isaac from “Love Boat”) and Chikezie. Well, judge for yourself:

And as a farewell to Garrett Haley, here’s Leif Garrett vs. Garrett photographically:

And don’t forget about Peter Frampton, too:

I asked him during the press conference Friday about the comparisons. He said he had no clue who either of them were until the first audition. He went back to the house and Googled the two names. “I was hoping they were decent-looking guys,” he told me. “I was pretty happy when they popped up.”
(By the way, he said he wasn’t able to sing any of his first three song picks and ended up getting assigned “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.” He had never heard it before. He’s also more a pop-rock guy, which we didn’t get to see. I sense he probably wasn’t familiar with the list of songs and had a hard time picking one himself while some of the more experienced singers knew what they wanted and honed in on them.)
How about chef and “The Restaurant” star Rocco Dispirito vs. Michael Johns

Someone said a young Tim Daly (“Wings,” “Private Practice”), too. What do you think?

Or Carrie Underwood vs. Alaina Whitaker:

The judges compared Brooke White to Carly Simon, stylistically and (apparently) visually:

Does anyone like the resemblance to Mia Farrow?

And since he brought it up himself, ousted Colton Berry vs. Ellen DeGeneres:

I asked Colton about the Ellen DeGeneres comparison. Here’s his response:
“People have been saying it for years. You know what—I’m one of her biggest fans. So you know, I just looked in the mirror and figured, maybe everyone is right. Maybe I look like Ellen. May as well embrace it!”
I asked him if Ellen has asked him to be on her show yet? “I haven’t talked to her yet. She called Ryan Seacrest and laughed with Ryan about the comments I said. If Ellen’s reading this, give me a call!”
How about Luke Menard vs. Kyle McLachlan (“Twin Peaks,” “Desperate Housewives”)?

And folks have also suggested actor Bruce Campbell (“Burn Notice,” “The Evil Dead,” “Hercules” and Orlando Bloom.

This one I’m not buying 100% but they could be siblings: Danny Noriega and Jessica Alba:

If David Archuleta wore his hair with bangs, he’d look a bit more like Zac Efron:

Here’s another one I came up with late Friday— Jerry O’Connell (“Crossing Jordan,” “Carpoolers”) and Jason Yeager:

There were a few others that I looked at that didn’t quite click. David Hernandez and Ray Romano, Grace Slick and Amanda Overmyer and David Spade and Robbie Carrico. And yes, I did look at Nadia Turner and Syesha Mercado but their resemblance is mostly the hair, not the facial features.

Nice job Rodney!!!!! I’m a HUGE Grace Slick fan, and never thought of comparing Amanda to her, but i CAN see how someone MIGHT thing of Gracie… if only someone could sing HER stuff….as good as she does; but apparently Airplane stuff is not released for use…

Best post of the Idol Year Rodney! It’s nice to see the side by side comparisons.
It is too bad that Garrett had to get a song assigned to him. I wonder how much that happened to others.
So much for it being all about selecting the right song.

JT. i agree about the song choice thing; we’ve heard this happen before, someone picks a song, but “rights” aren’t granted for the performance, so all their work goes for naught, and they’re usually stuck singing, as Garrett was, something they don’t know. Seems right unfair to me! but i guess, that’s life, eh?

what about amanda and rogue from xmen? well the hair, anyway, lol! i’m looking thru Gracie Slick pics to see if i see any resemblance…. she sounds more like Joplin or maybe even some Benetar or Jett tho, with the “rougher” vocals.

I like the Jessica Alba vs. Danny comparison. Minor similarities at best, what scares me is that I think Danny spent more time on his hair then Jessica did.

A blurb from the Feb 29 issue of Entertainment Weekly. ‘Melinda Doolittle will update “My Funny Valentine” with an R&B groove. Available on itunes’.
Also, EW’s favorite contestants:
Carly Smithson: a power vocalist who doesn’t succumb to fits of melisma.
Michael Johns: Sensitive rocker who makes us swoon. well, I’m glad I’m not alone :-)
Brooke White: For viewers who prefer subtlety over bombast.
Amanda Overmyer: Unlike Nikki McKibbon and Gina Glocksen, we think the ” rock & roll nurse’ could be the real thing.
Syesha Mercado: Big voice, supermodel looks.
David Archuleta: Cuter than Chicken Little, less creepy than John Stevens…he’s this season’s minor, with major promise.

Funny I was thinking that Luke resembled Orlando Bloom pretty closely. I don’t see the Bruce Campbell so much, maybe back in the Brisco County era (I just watched that whole series for the first time. Awesome entertainment!) I hope Luke sticks around for a long time so I can look at him some more. Funny, I’ve never been attracted to Orlando, but I am Luke.
Syesha looks a bit like Nadia Turner, but it’s mostly her hair. Nadia’s very pretty and Syesha is perfectly adorable.

Sarge, i doubt that Michael Lee Johns reads our lil blog, but I was wondering when someone would actually mention the “little college in Tifton” that he went to…ABAC was South Georgia’s biggest rival for small georgia town junior colleges back in my day (way before yours, i’m sure) but I knew immediately that Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College was where the lad had gone! LOL!
I love the “separated at birth” comparisons, Rodney and the rest of you…these are great! keep ‘em coming!!!!

How come there isn’t much buzz about Alexandrea in Atlanta? If there was an Idol from my area, I would be doing everything I could to help her get more exposure. Come on Dawg! Come on!

I had the same thought about Alaina and Carrie Underwood. Put her next to Robbie Carrico and it is like the finale a few seasons back. Bo Bice is who he looks like to me.

idolfan..it’s that long straight hair!
idolbeat. We’ve been enthusiatic about Alexandrea…you must have missed it. Although, we who frequent this blog, are mostly looking for the best singer rather than the hometown favorite. Paris Bennett got little support on this blog despite the fact that she was going to high school 20 minutes south of Atlanta. Diana DeGarma got more support than Paris but not because she’s from the Atlanta area.
While rooting for the hometown favorite is good, the hometown favorite has to prove that he/she has earned the support.

Deirdre, I agree with that but Alex has gotten very little air time, media exposure and is clearly not the chosen one. She has not had the chance to build up a strong following like the so-so girls who made it through Wednesday on strong fan base and not on their performances. I just think that to counter her lack of featured time, that the area she is representing would try to give her a little more exposure so she has a chance to show how talented she is. Without it, she will be gone. I love this girl and wish I could be promoting her in Atlanta. You have the population to make this happen.

Nigel Lythgoe has confirmed that the rest of the semi-finals will follow the decade theme.
Last week as we know was 1960’s. Top 20 the theme will be 1970’s and Top 16 theme will be 1980’s.
By Deirdre
February 23, 2008 10:14 AM | Link to this
idolbeat…Alex is a very good singer. We can all hope that she makes it through to the finals. During the semi’s I usually vote for 5 or 6 different people. Alex was one of them.
I agree that she hasn’t been given much airtime but she did herself proud on Wed. night and got some much needed attention. I think there will be a couple of more girls leaving before she’s in trouble.
My suggestion for her would be to find some music that shows off her voice, not her diva-abilities. She will have trouble competing with Syesha and Asia’h on that level.
At this point, when you have a bunch of talented girls…the 3 I just mentioned plus Carly, Ramiele, Alaina, and Kady….it’s going to be personality that gets you through to the next round. They all have potential. They ALL can sing. Now it depends on what they do and how well they do it.
By idolbeat
February 23, 2008 10:34 AM | Link to this
Yes, the field is very talented. I don’t think Alex’s style and sound is the same as Asia’h’s and Syesha’s though. She is more rock/jazz/funk than the two of them. But she is being lumped in with them, with the two of them getting a lot more publicity. They really don’t sound the same at all. I just wish she had a little more publicity to even give her the chance to get to show her stuff! Rodney, I know you said you only got a few minutes with her. Is there a chance you will get any more time? There was a review of the Star Search episode where Alex and David sang together that said she should have won. The vote was 14 to 13, with Alex misssing out by 1 pt. I have been trying to find it but basically the reviewer said that they thought the only reason David went through over Alex was because he had won so many shows in a row that the show didn’t want to see him be knocked off. Ratings? They said that her rendition of “My Funny Valentine” was a better performance.
By Deirdre
February 23, 2008 10:53 AM | Link to this
It’s all really subjective though, isn’t it? When the vote is that close…if it had gone the other way, people would probably being saying the same thing about David.
If she can hang on until the top 12, she will have done really well. That kind of exposure opens a lot of doors and then, it’s up to her and the whims of the public.
She’s very good…but I haven’t seen anything yet that shows me that she’s better than some of the others.
Because of her lack of early exposure on the show, she needs to stand out. She’ll have that opportunity on next Wednesday’s show. But people aren’t going to vote for her unless she makes her presence known.
There are a lot of people from the show’s past who didn’t get the early attention, who made it very far. Kelly Clarkson comes to mind.
By Deirdre
February 23, 2008 10:58 AM | Link to this
One more thing…sometimes a lot of early attention works against you because it raises the expectations. Kristy Lee was a huge disappointment to a lot of people Wednesday night. They expected a much better performance from her. Same was true of Brooke White. I personally, did not like Asis’h’s performance on Wed.

WOW wonder what SIMON would have thought of a little girl doing My Funny Valentine, lol… i can imagine Alex doing a great job of it, but… it is just a bit amusing that this particular song comes up… Melinda is reportedly doing it … i know i saw that somewhere, probably something Rodney said, but i can’t remember exactly where…
I like Alex too, and hope that she gets to stay into the top 12… however, like D said, there’s not much WE can do about it, since we just blog what we see, hear, and think; Rodney can only get so much info also, if it’s not out there.
what i’m trying to say, idolbeat, is that if YOU have something to share with us that will help get her some attention, feel FREE to share it with us, or if you think it’s something that Rodney Ho can use as the basis of an article, I’m sure he’d like your email at the newspaper-HERE *i don’t know if that works as a link, it may not, but rodney has given out the email frequently so you should be able to find it)

I agree with Deirdre in terms of how to approach a hometown gal. I think Alex was middle of the pack last week. Given her situation, she has no room to slack off. On the bright side, there are only three gimmes at this point among the women -Syesha, Ramiele and Asia’h. Carly is so divisive at this point, no way I can say she’s a gimme. Ditto with Amanda. So Alex isn’t in bad shape if she can rise to the occasion Wednesday.
And given that Michael Johns performed so much here in Atlanta for years and built a following, i will treat him with a bit of hometown fervor, too. And same with Carly and Asia’h. You lived here, you get a bit more blog space!

Being American means that each individual has a right to make their own choices. American men and women have fought and given their life so we as a people have the freedom to say just about anything we want to with out the fear of persecution
I have stated on this blog that is my choice to vote for someone born in this country to win American Idol. I have been attacked and called names for stating my opinion. Now I know why. People are grouping me in with idiots like you.
You have a right to your opinion as does everyone else in this great country. If someone does not choose to vote as you do then they are exercising their right as an American. If you would like a country where everyone believes as you do then you go to Iraq. If they don’t agree with you over there they will just kill you.
