3/19: Kristy Lee Cook survives again, Amanda Overmyer is out

Well, all the folks who thought Kristy Lee Cook was going home (including me) were wrong, wrong, wrong.

Two weeks in a row she was targeted and two weeks in a row her fans saved her. Think Julia DeMato. Or Haley Scarnato. Being cute at this tage doesn’t hurt.

The final result wasn’t shocking though: Amanda Overmyer is out instead. The folks at “Vote for the Worst” who picked her as their “screw Idol” vote are weeping and their lack of efficacy shows again. The rock-n-roll nurse’s one dimensional raspy voice and approach ultimately brought her down. I liked her personally but a lot of people didn’t. She’ll probably be better remembered for her black/white hair combo than her singing though that “Carry On Wayward Son” still pains us all. (Mike S.-congrats on calling this one correctly!)

This was an important inflection point for the Idols because the top 10 make the “Idols Live” tour. And no. 11? Just ask Stephanie Edwards or Mikalah Gordon, Amanda. Sorry.

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: Music from the year they were born. Here are the years I gleaned from the Web: Michael Johns (1978), David Cook (1982), Carly Smithson, Brooke White (1983) Kristy Lee Cook (1984), Chikezie (1985), Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro, Ramiele Malubay (1987) and David Archuleta (1990).

In order:

Brooke is safe. That’s fair. Surprise! Carly Smithson is in the bottom three. I don’t agree with that at all. But we know she doesn’t go home.

David Archuleta is fine, naturally. Ditto with Michael Johns.

After another break, David Cook gets clearance. Then Kristy is up and she’s in the bottom three. Jason Castro is fine. So is Ramiele Malubay (what the…?).

After really long break, Syesha makes it to the top 10. (Phew!). It’s Chikezie vs. Amanda. Amanda is in the bottom two. So I got two out of three right. In my funofficepools.com game, I was ranked No. 10 but I will fall way down because I picked Kristy Lee for 18 out of 20 possible points and only gave Amanda one.

The rest here is from the early portion of the show:

The four upcoming mentors will be Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Neil Diamond. That’s pretty good.

The songwriting contest has been revived despite the lousy results from last year (“This is my.. bleh…”).

We break into the group sing (“Where My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Here, There and Everywhere,” with a camera snafu during Kristy’s bit and “Because,” with a bit of “The End”). Fortunately, this particular group sing involved minimal dancing.

There’s a “making of” of the Ford video. David Cook goofs around. MIchael Johns said he did a “Susan Lucci” type of performance. It’s a typically silly ad.

During the pre-taped Q&A, Simon claims he has no ego. Would Simon do a sequel to the “kiss” skit from a few seasons back. He said yes. “You’re actually a very good kisser,” Simon says to Paula. “We have time to get to second base,” Ryan cracks. “Apparently, I peaked in Hollywood,” Michael Johns said to a question about his life.

Sadly, ever-adorable Kelly Pickler keeps her pups in place but she sounds great doing “Red High Heels.” Elliott Yamin and Fantasia, in a bit for “Idol Gives Back,” hand out bed nets to folks in Angola.

KRISTI shouldn’t go home

I agree it should probably be Kristy, but I am actually thinking Amanda is going to be the vote off.

Who ever gets the hook tonight won’t make the tour and that will leave the top ten that will. So what it comes down to is who the producers feel will draw more fans. I’ll say that Kristy stays this week to add a country twist as well as eye candy.

Nah I don’t think Ramiele will be in the bottom 3… even though I don’t think she was great last night.

It’s so weird watching this show with my dad. His comments are so weird. Before Ramiele started singing he’s like “I’m betting she will get the lowest number of votes and will leave”…and then when David Archuleta’s pre-performance tape was playing (moment) he goes “If this kid doesn’t step it up he’ll be gone very soon.”

I don’t think he understands that these people have fan bases LOL!!! What a weirdo.

I think that leaving in the top 16, top 11, top 3, and being the runner-up must be a major let down.

If you’re voted off before Top 12 in the top 16, you’re crushed you can’t be a part of the finale.

If you leave in the top 11, you can’t go on tour.

If you leave Top 3, you aren’t a finale contestant

And if you don’t win, well, you don’t win.

WE, are you suggesting that the producers do the elimination, not the fans? Because, having studied communications law, I can assure you that huge fines would have to be paid for cheating on the voting results. HUGE in the sense that it would really eat into Idol/FOX profits and I’m thinking they wouldn’t like that too much.

If results cheating was an ongoing problem, Idol would be off the air.

JT…a true group sing lover would have appreciated last week’s disaster as much as the previous weeks’ success! :-)

By War Eagle

D, has anyone ever seen the actual vote count? I remember at some time people were calling for the the actual total of votes for each contestant be made public and AI refused.

By Deirdre

March 19, 2008 8:06 PM | Link to this

WE…Nope, the public has never seen the actual vote count but I am absolutely positive that a regulatory agency keeps track of it EVERY week. There are a LOT of laws about this very thing. It all stems from the scandals involving some game shows in the late 50’s early 60’s where the show gave the favored contestants the answers to the questions.

The FCC is on every show’s azz because of it.

By War Eagle

March 19, 2008 8:17 PM | Link to this

D, you are obviously more knowledgeable in this area than I am so thanks for your comments.

All I’m saying is that we are able to see the number of votes that each presidential candidate receives but AI feels the need to hide vote totals from the public. WHY?

By Deirdre

March 19, 2008 8:36 PM | Link to this

WE…first…I only know this cuz Greg had to take Communications Law 3 times. He passed it every time but because it was part of his major, he had to get a solid C in it. He HATED it and, on the 3rd try, I used to quiz him every day. After that, he hated me for awhile but he passed the damn class! :-)

Presidential elections are easy to interpret compared to Idol. Everybody gets ONE vote.
At Idol, everybody who votes, gets to do it as many times as they want.

Part of the reason Idol doesn’t reveal votes weekly may be to keep people from knowing just how far down the second to last person was. Sort of like the complaint about states going to one candidate or another before the polls are closed on the west coast…it influences the vote.

I really have no idea why they don’t reveal vote counts at the end of the season…..other than to protect the feelings of the contestants.

By War Eagle

March 19, 2008 8:47 PM | Link to this

Protect the feelings of the contestants? I guess Simon didn’t get the memo.

Wouldn’t it be beneficial if each contestant’s vote total was made public? That way each contestants fan base would know to try harder to keep their favorite in the contest, which would increase the total number of votes that AI could brag about each week.

Oh Deirdre, the insult! I like them good and/or cheesy… last week I felt a little embarrassed for them because I could actually pick out major goofs. Don’t let me down this week! Oh and as we thin the ranks I hope the commercials aren’t a mish mash of flashing faces. Make it a good night before I turn off the Pickler!

Greg took Communications Law, AND passed? Our little Flats did that? Is it April 1st or something?

I kid!

By Deirdre

March 19, 2008 8:54 PM | Link to this

LOL!! on Simon! I don’t think anyone controls him!

Actually…it could have the opposite effect. People could feel that their votes are being wasted because so and so doesn’t have a chance! So they vote for someone else.

I hope that someday Idol explains why it they don’t reveal totals…at least at the end of the season! But, whether they tell us or not, the feds would be down their throats if they were fudging the vote count.

Who knows…maybe they’ve figured out a way to get away with it.

Hi Deirdre and Linny and thanks for having welcomed me back a couple of weeks ago, but if Carley gets voted off tonight, I’m gone again. Carley is the best singer in this competition and arguably the best EVER in the history of Idol, and you know that that is hard for me to say. She has a-close-to-Celine talent and if she goes home tonight, I am personally writing Simon a letter as I will hold him responsible. His comments against her were one of the few times I thought he got it completely wrong. And anyone who dislikes Carley for her tatoos … sorry but you aren’t worth my wrath! This is a singing competition and not a Clearasil ad tryout. Carley is the only REAL talent on that stage.

Achin4Aiken, I would like to quote you if you don’t mind. You said “if Carly gets voted off tonight, Im gone again.” which translates into “if I don’t get my way, I’m taking my ball and going home.”

You are comparing this lady to, and I quote you again ” a-close-to-Celine talent.”

I must determine that your that your time in the record business was spent cleaning the toilet bowls of the people that work in the electronics department of your local Wal-Mart.

If you are so advanced in knowledge when it comes to the record business, why was your best singer in AI history in the bottom three?

Wash your hands before you respond. I would hate for you to get some of that toilet bowl sh*t on your keyboard.

I was so glad to see Amanda go. I know she had a large fan base but I just can not enjoy her type of music. I was really surprised to see Carly in the bottom three because she does have a pretty voice. I don’t understand how Kristi Lee and Brook are surviving. I do believe they will be going soon. I am a big fan of David A., and very glad he stayed. I was real pleased to see and hear Kellie Pickler on tonight, she was my favorite when she was competing.

I predict that Amanda Overmyer will do just fine on the motorcycle rendezvous circuit this summer and I’d be willing to bet that she will have plenty of offers to front some bands. Get your motor running…

By Negativo

March 19, 2008 11:17 PM | Link to this

Neg is still perfect in the eliminations. I missed on Carly tonight, but otherwise was perfect. Mike S. had the bottom 3 perfect, so major props to him.

Still, I am 1000% perfect on eliminations for the season and we’re down to the top 10, so if you listen tyo anyone but the Negster for your predictions you’re missing the boat.

Neg knows Idol. Amanda was entertaining and fun for awhile, but she had played out her relevance and needed to be removed.

By Harmony

March 19, 2008 11:24 PM | Link to this

Justin, I completely agree. While I’m not like an Amanda Fan, I do think she would offer more entertainment on the tour than Kristy, who just looks uncomfortable up there when she’s singing.

She might have a range of only 4 or 5 notes, but at least Amanda sings those notes - and works that stage - with gusto.

Kristy is a stronger singer than Haley was last year, but like Haley she is hanging on in the bottom two every week. I think Rodney and others are not understanding that Kristy is a pretty good singer despite her stiff stage presence, and she sings with a folksy, soulful style that many (like me) really enjoy. The parody-like countrified joke arrangement of last week aside, she really is a nice singer with good looks. She is tough to eliminate for a reason.

By Harmony

March 19, 2008 11:50 PM | Link to this

Negativo — You are 100% right. Kristy Lee Cook is a MUCH better singer than Haley Scarnato was last year. She’s sweet, pretty and appealing in many ways. Her main problem is indeed stage presence. But there is definitely a country audience out there that appreciates her and keeps on voting for her. She could easily slip into the top 7 or 8 if she does reasonably well the next couple of weeks.

I just got the theme and added it to my entry: the year each contestant was born. Michael Johns (1978), David Cook (1982), Carly Smithson, Brooke White (1983) Kristy Lee Cook (1984), Chikezie (1985), Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro, Ramiele Malubay (1987) and David Archuleta (1990).

WE, lol, you don’t need to be attackin’ A4A — A4A really IS and has been in the music business for ever and knows it well! Well-respected from years in the past, and well-missed in the last couple of years for incisive commentary… not that i always agree… for example, i absolutely agree that Carly is VERY Celine-esque… but i cannot stand Celine, LOL. So I understand A4A’s observation, and agree … but the results are polar opposites! But i think we still appreciate each other!!!

Don’t know if or when A4A will see this, but hey kiddo, come back again soon!

Harmony, we might have to go out on limb next week and say that someone else will be eliminated on Wednesday’s show. I know it is risky to keep the same strategy, but it has worked so far.

Theme: the year each contestant was born always sounds good on paper, but for me it usually ends up being one of the weaker shows. I’ll give my “I am the Walrus” votes to Chikezie if he does Broken Wings. Maybe I’ll have to pick a favorite song from each year and see if the contestants do them. Granted I don’t remember anything good coming out of 1990, but I’m sure I can find something after I do some digging.

By Harmony

Linny, I must say with all due respect to any and all, the statement that Carly is the only real talent on that stage … well that’s not what I consider incisive commentary. I’m just sayin…

OK, I’ve gone through and picked one of my personal favorites for each contestant to sing from their birth year. This list will tell you two things 1) I have too much time on my hands and 2) My taste in music is basically poop. I’ll give 20 votes to anyone that sings the song I selected for them, but I think the only person who would sound good with the song I’ve selected is Jason Castro.

Michael Johns 1978 = Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. Not going to happen, and I don’t even like that song much, which tells you what I think of 1978.

David Cook 1982 = Kids in America by Kim Wilde. He’ll probably go for I love Rock N’ Roll instead.

Carly Smithson 1983 = Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics. There are a lot of songs she can pick from 83 that would suit her.

Brooke White 1983 = Africa by Toto

Kristy Lee Cook 1984 = When Doves Cry – Prince. Double votes from me if she does Dance Hall Days.

Chikezie 1985 = Broken Wings by Mr. Mister

Syesha Mercado 1987 = Heart and Soul by T’Pau. She will have my eternal hatred if she does Luca

Jason Castro 1987 = The Lady in Red by Chris DeBurgh. This is the only entry on this list where I think one of my favorites matches something that I think they would do good with.

Ramiele Malubay 1987 = I want your sex by George Michael. She of course would dedicate this song to me.

David Archuleta 1990 = Epic by Faith no more. What a turkey of a year for songs. There are songs that will fit him, but I didn’t even like those songs in 1990. I will forever sing his praises if he does the Humpty Dance or anything by Milli Vanilli. And when I say forever I mean until the next night when he is voted off.

Deirdre: Decent group sing, the funny part for me came when I noticed that Amanda wasn’t singing along. She was just mouthing the words, I know because I do that same thing every time I go to church. The only real flubs this time seemed to be technical, a camera bump and someone forgot to turn on Ramiele’s microphone.

Kristy Lee will be gone next week. The producers got her on to the tour as I said they would, now she can go.

By TJW

March 20, 2008 7:42 AM | Link to this

1: Could the producers influence the vote, quite easily… set up a few auto-dialers directed to their preferred contestants would go a long way and be reasonably hard to track.

2: Despite what anyone says, Idol is NOT a singing competition. If it was, it would be on the radio so you could only hear the voices. Idol is a Performing Competition, and there is a lot more to a great performer then just singing. Take Amanda and Kristy Lee.

Amanda: Biker chick, average singer, voice really shows those 3 packs a day, can sing rock, but little else, decent stage presence.

Kristy Lee: Hot chick, good singer, clear, pretty voice, prefers country, but not limited to it, horrible stage presence.

Roll that all together and Kristy wins over Amanda any day of the week… Now, she won’t last much longer as she is just outclassed…

3: Try Watching Idol without actually ‘watching’ it. Audio only, no Visuals, and tell me if your rankings don’t change…

Morning mushblogians!

JT…I noticed that Amanda wasn’t singing too. She just didn’t seem connected to this group at all. Even when she was eliminated, instead of accepting their hugs, she stood like a stone and practically straight armed them. I would have though she was just upset but she seemed to do that EVERY time they did the ‘group hug’ thing. Definitely a lack of warmth on her part.

I loved reading what everyone had to say after I went to bed last night. All the guys were talking about their prediction accuracy(nice job BTW, guys)slamming poor Aiken for daring to have an opinion(shame on her that she’s soooooo definite about how she feels)or comparing Kristy to Haley(a very good comparison)

I thought the group sing was really nice last night. I wanted everyone else to shut up and let Carly or (amazingly) Kristy sing Here, There and Everywhere cuz they were the only 2 who were getting it right.

LOVED the commercial especially after watching the ‘making of’ video. Turns out, from the looks of things, that Michael is the clown of the group…never would have guessed that.

AMANDA IS GONE! Oh thank goodness! I could not listen to that raspy growl one more week. She was the most talentless person in the competition. Did anyone else notice that she was not even singing with the group last night? Probably a good thing as she could no more harmonize with everyone than the man on the moon. I knew she was out the minute that she was on stage smiling and holding the microphone. She was not even singing!!!!!

Tatoo Too-tall

2-Tone

Carly didn’t belong in bottom 3, but she engaged in ill conceived interpretation. Don’t change the lyrics to a classic. That not interpretation. Its the path to exit door.

Christy-Lee: Sing the melody correctly - especially on the hook lyric of the song. Sing something straight soon, or you’re going to be gone.

Amanda - Should have been gone last week.

Ramiele Malubay is cute, but she’s out of her league. The unknown is if Chisty-Lee will wise up and take direction or keep doing things “her way” and be shown the door before Ramiele.

A4A may be WRONG, lol, but has as MUCH right as any of us to express an opinion!!! That is all i am saying (i already said i totally disagree that Carly’s the only good one…she’s ok, but to ME she’s not all that) I’m just saying, WE, that A4A has as much right to express an opinion, AND for the record, IS in the business (so, hey, Simon’s in the business too, and he’s sometimes so far off the mark it isn’t funny!!! and Paula’s in the business… but i don’t put a LOT of credence in to anything SHE says…. and just because Randy KNOWS everyone in the business….. get my drift? i was defending A4A’s right to an opinion and the right to express it!

Hey, WE! I DO have to say that, while I believe she’s not alone as far as talent is concerned, Carly has the best voice in the competition….and the group sing was a perfect example last night.

There’s a lot of talent this year from Chikezie’s unbridled enthusiasm for performing to Archie’s subtle yet heartfelt songs. From Michael’s potential as a singer to David A’s full out rock and roll vibe. From Syesha’s emotional performances to Jason Castro’s almost emotionless singing….they’re all talented.

Now that we are down to the top 10, it doesn’t really matter what order they go as long as the top five are: David Cook, David Archuletta, Carly Smithson, Brooke White and Jason Castro (in no particular order).

The remainder are good, but they aren’t stellar or have a unique sound.

I am not sure who will win, but right now my money is on one of the David’s taking the title.

David Archuletta’s nerves seem to be hindering him lately. It could ruin things for him.

Jason Castro is far, far from perfect, but I like his sound and he’s a very likable fellow.

Carly has the pipes, but she isn’t the girl next door and that could hurt her.

Brooke White is very humble, sweet and genuine. I love the tone of her voice. Watching and listening to her play, she reminds me of Carole King.

David Cook seems cocky sometimes, but his performances are fast becoming a highlight for me. Last season lacked an entertaining performer, and David Cook is rescuing this season from the same fate. He is one who is worth watching as well as listening too.

And I agree with linny. Aiken came on and expressed an opinion! Just like the rest of us. You may not have liked her tone or her opinion but that’s all it was.

She can be strident, hard headed and a know-it-all. I believe I have been called that myself at one time or another. :-) But she’s allowed to have an opinion!

Carly’s problem is she does not connect with the audience.

If you close your eyes she sounds exceptionally good, but on stage she looks like some possessed demon.

“Blackbird” is not an ANGRY song, but the woman standing there singing it looked like a Psycho Killer Bunny From Outerspace.

Carly seems to be a really nice fun-loving person in her interviews and stuff, but on stage she is just not likeable - no matter how well she sings.

good point WE … sometimes i think each of us gets a little hot under the collar about something someone says … ALL of us need to remember it isn’t … or should not be … personal.

my apologies if i came off defensive in A4A’s defense; i guess i, like D, just remember her from the past, and D pegged it… she can be “strident, hard headed and a know-it-all” — and she was called down on her opinions a LOT be a lot of people; but the point is to not make it a ‘personal attack’ … that’s all i was trying to say but i was sleepy and grumpy and…

see, i wanted Amanda to make it ONE more week so she’d be on the tour — i honestly think she’d make the live show a heckuva lot more entertaining that SOME of the top 10!

TBK, you’re an idiot!

sorry, that was personal.

OK, let me put it this way. After a hard day what do YOU do for relaxation? Let me guess… perhaps you have a beer or a glass of wine or a mixed drink; perhaps you like the satire shows such as family guy and south park? or perhaps you go more for sitcoms? or perhaps you play a video game with your kids, jog, play some basketball, or watch sports?

Let’s say you love basketball. You watch a game on tv. Next day you and your co-workers talk about the incredible 3-pointer that some guy made in the game, and how it’s a miracle that the team pulled it out!

oh. wait! Do you know that The Chief Justice is a gentleman named Roberts? Do you know our Lt Gov Casey Cagle is the first republican LT Gov in Georgia in many many many years? (ok i confess i forgot how many) Do you know what the Fair Tax is and how it would work to get rid of the unweildy, incompetent and frankly unconstitutional IRS system currently so acceptable to politicians? Do you … well nevermind.

My point is this: each of us relaxes and has ‘soft’ parts of our lives that are not earth shattering and world saving. some watch AI. some read. some play sports. some exercise. some watch other tv shows. you, obviously, read blogs you find stupid and take the time to make comments ON the ‘stupid’ blogs about how ‘stupid’ anyone is to blog there….WHOOPS…. a little logic dictates that you have just included your sweet lil self in that group!!!!

Honestly I feel Kristy may be on a few more weeks now this Beetle crap is behind them. One week was enough of the Beetles and really had some good contestants struggle. I think Kristy Lee is every bit as good as Kellie Pickler and probably can be nearly as good as Carrie. I don’t see her winning, but I see a huge improvement in the next few weeks as long as something as difficult as the Beetles doesn’t get in her way.

I see either Brooke or Ramiele as the next to go. Syesha is one of the best singers, but she is so forgetable (I had to go to the AI website just to remember her name) and I think she will be one to go way to early. I think it will be hard for AI not to have an all guy final 3 this year since the guys seem to be on their game.

D..thanks for the clarification both Mandissa & Frenchie were absolutely phenomenonal.

War Eagle: You are terrible. It’s no way getting through to you.

Truth Be Known: Just enjoy life you. Let your smile be your umbrella.

Get Real: Get a life! You seem as though you are lonely and miserable. Do you need some attention? Are you crying out for help?

D-Dre Now I understand why we connect so well. I too am a Caregiver for an elderly handicap mom(cant walk anymore,94yrs old) 24/7 aint no joke it can be Highly Stressful(even causing me to catch the flu or contributing to it because my immune system was compromised from the daily Stress. It is a mental breakdown and I too come on here for a break-away However I am at work and half to peep in and out:-)..I do have a nurse for 7hrs 5days a week. Only a Caregiver can understand what another Caregiver goes through. Thats why I have zero tolerence when my post is attacked and will strike back like a cobra. I perfer the NICE side of me.and would rather keep the Dark Spawn of Satan(my evil side locked in the basement.until some idoit Picks the lock and let it out which is a total different person altogether when provoked. But every day some bozo no lifes on here will attack folks posts.(now thats what I call NO LIFE if you have to come on here attacking folks who are not even talking to you.. .Again a suggestion..eat dirt and bark at the moon! No one Cares what you think of our posts Long or short. Anyway back to you D-dre..We (caregivers) will receive our reward from the Most High..Happy Easter to u and your family.

Thanks B-shep…yeah, it’s a difficult, stressful job but we manage! Just ignore the Worm…he’s not worth getting the Dark Spawn of Satan out of hiding for…little and insignificant!

I’m not crazy about Brooke either. She and Jason seem to belong in the same category…sort folksy and guitar strumming quiet people who sing nicely but don’t get to me very much. Nice voices but they make me kinda sleepy.

Hey Rabb, yes, I can understand how Brooke would appeal to large audience. But she would not be doing as well if she were less attractive. I liked her at first, but she’s begun to interrupt and talk too much when judges & Ryan are talking. And there’s that goat tone to her voice and those strange flailing arm movements. Simon used to complain about Clay Aiken’s weird looks when he sang, and Brooke’s are much more distracting to me.

BlkShep - new blog up but to answer your question — theme next week is “year born”, rodney posted a list of them which i am copying here:

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: Music from the year they were born. Here are the years I [Rodney] gleaned from the Web: Michael Johns (1978), David Cook (1982), Carly Smithson, Brooke White (1983) Kristy Lee Cook (1984), Chikezie (1985), Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro, Ramiele Malubay (1987) and David Archuleta (1990).

Regarding Mentors, there will only be FOUR mentors this year - Dollie Parton, Neil Diamond, Mariah Carey and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Cats, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, etc etc etc)

so we will NOT be inundated with mentors this year, thank goodness!!!
