Kimberly Caldwell interview, Dolly Parton mentor next week
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ABOVE: Kimberly Caldwell co-hosts “Idol Tonight” on TV Guide Channel with Rosanna Tavarez (middle) and Justin Guarini (left).
A week ago, I spoke with Kimberly Caldwell, who has had the most successful post-“Idol” TV career. She’s been co-hosting “Reality Chat” and “Idol Tonight” for the TV Guide Network for the past four years.
I noted that she was eliminated “again” that previous weekend on “American Idol Rewind,” which recounts season two. “Oh my God!” she said. “It’s like seriously embarrassing. It’s a part of my history, no regrets. But my hair, my clothes, everything! I’m totally proud I pulled it together to last as long as I did on the show.” (She came in seventh.)
She was surprisingly self critical during the show’s post-interviews. “I’ve been a performer my whole life-I expected more out of myself.”
She said she and Josh Gracin recently joked “Rewind” was like going through the high school yearbook. “We get to relive it again,” she said.
Caldwell marvels that she’s been able to become an “Idol” expert on the various TV Guide shows. “I wish I knew everything now back then. But I’m grateful for ‘Idol’ because I probably wouldn’t have this job.” (Well, we can say she definitely would not have the job without Idol!)
She isn’t sure why TV Guide has kept her around so long. “I’m the longest running and youngest host at the channel,” she said. “I guess I brought a little spice to the channel. It was very vanilla when it started.”
She said at first, she tried to be a host and copied everybody else. But after a few weeks, she realized that wasn’t working so she just started acting like herself, a little goofy, a little giddy. And it’s worked. She hooked up with “Popstars” refugee Rosanna Tavares, who has become her best friend on and off camera. And last year, she recommended Justin Guarini to join them for the “Idol” recap shows. She said the trio are like siblings and can be quite off color off camera. “No one will ever see [the outtakes] or we’d not have careers,” she said.
Caldwell says people ask her 10 times a day when her album will come out. “There will be a product sometimes this freakin’ year!” she promised without specifics. “It will be worth the wait! I’m trying to do my own stuff and not what everybody else wants me to do.”
She said this is her favorite year besides her year, of course. “These are all solo artists,” she said. “They are performers, not karaoke singers.” Her top three before the top 11 Beatles night performances were David Archuleta, Carly Smithson and David Cook.
Her breakdown of each person and she was pretty kind, much nicer than Constantine overall:
David Archuleta: “I’m obsessed with him! I wondered before I met him if he really is that nice. But he’s that nice. I was 21 when I did Idol. No way I could have done that at 17 like him.” (She predicted he’d be fine last week after his botched top 12 performance and she was right)
David Cook: “I want to have David Cook’s baby! He’s got that sexy, gorgeous voice. Everyone compares him to Daughtry but I think he’s just real. He’s a star. He could win this.”
Michael Johns: “He’s really cool. Anybody who’s worked with him on the show says he’s the sweetest guy. He’s so nice. He could finish top 5.”
Jason Castro: “I think Jason will be around awhile. He’s adorable, very cute face, just a sweetheart. He’s that totally awkward guy, a loner. He hangs out with himself.”
Chikezie: “I did not think he was going to make the top 12 and then he had that phenomenal top 12 performance. Talk about taking ownership! He earned his spot.”
She wonders if all the tabloid coverage of Danny Noriega may have hurt his chances of the top 12 and helped gave the spot to Kristy Lee Cook. “She’s really pretty and a good vocalist.”
Brooke White: “She’s very softspoken, very chill. It would easy to not like her because she’s so perfect!”
Syesha Mercado: “I don’t think she’s shown a lot of her personality. As much as we want this to be just a singing competition, it’s also a personality competition.”
Carly Smithson: “I want to be friends with her. Vocally, she’s just flawless! I love the songs she picks and the clothes she wears. And her attitude about everything.”
(I forgot to ask her about Ramiele and Amanda! Oh, well…)
In other “Idol” news:
Dolly Parton will the be the first mentor for next week. In his blog on Idol Chatter, Phil says the “Idol” production team caught up with him, Bucky Covington and Bo Bice, all of whom will appear on video on next Wednesday’s episode on April 2.
Remember the kid from Knoxville who lived in his car and almost made it to the top 24 Josiah Leming? The Knoxville paper reports that he has a record deal already with Warner Brothers.. This is the first time I’ve heard a person who just missed the top 24 get a major record deal.
And here are some songs from the years each contestant were born that could work based on a list of the top pop hits from the year. I have no inside knowledge of what they will actually sing. I’m also avoiding songs that have been played out like “Livin’ on a Prayer” or “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” or “Alone.”

Great info, thanks.
Josiah… ugg we have enough failed Idols running around. In my opinion he has a deal because he cried a whole lot.
I’m actually looking forward to Dolly.

Morning!
I think Josiah will get by on his crying for awhile, then his voice will have to do what people expect it to.
Kimberly Caldwell managed to find something nice to say about everybody but there’s a lot between the lines that I’m wondering about. She found it difficult to say something straight up nice about all the girls without making it sound just a wee bit catty. She praises the guys wholeheartedly…I didn’t get that with her comments about the girls.
Dolly should be fun!

I am looking forward to tonight - especially to see if any of our song choices are done tonight. Should be interesting.
Did you hear that Paula has agreed (her idea) to be an Idol correspondent for Q100? She plans to call in every Thursday morning after eliminations night.

Morning mushbloggians one and all… I’m looking forward to next week. tonight will essentially be another 80s night, and for some reason 80s nights have always seemed to be disasters to me!
ok….dressed and ready to head out… just stopping by for a quickie… hello that is … now, where’s that heavy jacket … brrrrr!
peace :^)

Paula/Q100? That should be interesting! Do you think she’ll be coherent between 5:30am and 10am est? I guess if she’s still awake on the west coast at 2:30am she might be able to chat for a few minutes. That doesn’t mean she’ll be coherent but then, we’ve never expected that from Paula anyway.

No spoilers yet, just a bunch of stuff including one guy claiming that Archie is going to sing We Didn’t Start the Fire. That’s funny and, my guess, impossible!

Some people are claiming that Michael Johns has said he wanted the opportunity to do another Queen song and his birth year would be the perfect time.
I’m hearing that Syesha is singing Natalie Cole but I don’t know what song.
I think people are still speculating although the guy who gave the Archie prediction swears it’s true. :-)

I spoke with Bert yesterday. The Q100 morning show interviewed her for 20-plus minutes last Friday. Listening to Paula THAT long is a bit much but she was enthusiastic and liked the show so much, she offered to be a correspondent. It wasn’t as if the Bert show asked. That’s a testament to the Bert Show. We’ll see if she follows through and how coherent she is at 6-6:30 a.m. PST!

There’s a guy on one of the boards who knows Syesha and announces what she will sing on the day of the show. Today he’s decided to make a teasing game out of it and has listed 4 songs, claiming he will tell the real song later today. Since he’s always been right about what she sings:
Syesha will sing one of these:
I Knew You Were Waiting For Me If I Was Your Woman This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) Rhythm Is Gonna Get You

Deirdre, She could well be catty, lots of girls are. For that very reason most of my daughters best friends have always been male, they had only a couple of close female friends. Does anyone else think Chikezie would also do well with { Stand by me}?

Hey Harmony! I think that could be a good choice for him, except Stand By Me doesn’t get “upbeat” … and what seems to be saving Chik is the laid back opening with a daring, bold, and vibrant finish. I personally like the song, just not sure that it’s a good choice from the judge’s perspective … i think he’d do it great justice, personally.
By JTesla

I can see Chikezie getting some grief from Simon if he does another laid back opening followed by a vibrant finish. I can hear him now “it was all a little predictable.”

I see Chikezie getting grief from the judges anyway, it’s going to get harder and harder to live up to their expectations.

I like that song for Chikezie as well. He does need a change of pace, meaning a song that stays at the same pace while he’s singing it!
Hubby’s mood has taken a turn for the worse while installing our new foyer fixture. I’m hiding at the computer! :-)

LOL JT, you are right…i stand corrected! So SBM might be an excellent choice for Chik to sing… but if he does any song like that, he’ll need to be visibly singing “from the heart” not just mouthing lyrics!
btw, JT, have i told you lately how much i absolutely adore you???? ~¿@ huge cyber-hug to you way over yonder in the great northwest! {{{{JT}}}} you’re my hero!

I’m hoping so, Harmony — They are by far and away the lowest in talent; they both try hard, and are lovely people, but….they canNOT dance! At least Penn seems to really try to make up for the fact that he’s so huge…but he’ll never “look” right, i fear.
I have to say at this point, of the men, I’m struck by the musicality of Mario, but i think i’m in lust with Jason Taylor—and he can dance too!!! And for the women, I’m amazed at Priscilla, but … just cannot get all hyped for her—for 62 she’s good, but she’s not THAT good, and the bo-toxed face just turns me off off OFF; Kristy has always been one of my fave skaters, and Marlee one of my heros because of her ability rise above her deafness … and Marissa’s shear determination matches Penn’s, but from the “short” side, LOL!

The first week they danced I noticed Jason’s excellent posture and also noticed that Priscilla’s face looked too full, but tryed to be nice and not mention it.I do think too much Botox.

From TMZ on what’s wrong with Pricilla’s face:
Priscilla, whose face looks … strange on “Dancing with the Stars,” went to Dr. Daniel Serrano around 2003. Serrano was a good-looking doc from Argentina who hooked into Hollywood’s social A-list and started giving them what he claimed were miracle injections that worked better than Botox.
In fact, Serrano was injecting industrial, low-grade silicone similar to what’s used to lubricate auto parts in Argentina into the faces of these women. Several women, including Shawn King, Larry’s wife, and Diane Richie, Lionel’s wife at the time, held injection parties in their homes, with Serrano needling them with the non-FDA approved drug that he had smuggled in to the U.S. Shawn King has said the injections created a lump in her lip that made it difficult to speak and drink liquids. Serrano charged between $300 and $500 a pop.

Deirdre, Kristy could win, if people don’t think she has an unfair edge because of skating and dancing being similar. I suppose that since I’m the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer around here I must leave the blog and get busy with the redundant chores. See you all after idol.

If those same women had not worn 15 tons of makeup, especially pancake and powder, all their lives, they wouldn’t NEED stuff to make them look “young” … it was their own fault for clogging their pores and destroying their natural beauty in the first place, LOL!!!
I’m so glad I lived in Florida where it was just too darned hot to wear makeup when i was a teenager; too hot and too much time in the gulf, lol… i can’t take credit for any smarts on this… laziness and environment, lol!!! but i’m grateful!

D, do you think “Champions” gives Michael enough musical range to show his voice? seems sort of limited to me :-(
Carly doing Total Eclipse could be quite good — or it will be horrid. I don’t see much way for middle ground on that one.
DCook doing Billy Jean? Somehow that just doesn’t…. feel right… or something, to me. I dunno. I have reservations on song choice here.
Funny, Brooke doing Every Breath… i always imagine that song as a little bit of a stalker’s theme… and she sure doesn’t fit THAT mold!
Kristy - God Bless.. guess she just couldn’t re-do Amazing Grace yet again, so she chose something equally recognizable and identifiable. I fear a disaster, but could be wrong…
for the rest, i really don’t have much opinion, or don’t know the song well enough…
see ya’ tonight!!!

I don’t think Michael has a lot of range….but I think he’s capable of rocking this song. What worries me is, will he keep the ladies voting for him with this song? Ace did it a few years ago and wasn’t very good. Michael is a better singer than Ace.
David C.and Michael Jackson just don’t seem like a good mix to me but then, I would have said the same thing about him and Lionel Richie.
Kristy needs to rabble rouse with that song and she’s just not capable of that.
Carly will be the one to watch tonight and Brooke may do something with that song that makes us all cry!
Jason’s pick is beautiful but the same as everything else he’s done. He’s beginning to come across like a broken record.
Archie’s choice goes to that social awareness stuff he likes and it’s a good song…I’m sure he’ll sing it well.
Syesha and Chikezie will do ok with their choices.
Ramiele is going down inflames.

DAMN U KRISTY LEE COOK! God Bless The USA could actually be good for her. Damn her. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. I WANT HER GONE!!!
Ramiele- Alone..her “comeback” said the same thing last week but now possibly!
Syesha- If I were your Woman… Tamyra Gray sang this on 70’s night… so how is this an ‘87 song? Whatever…i hope she just blows it out the box! Please, Please, Please.
Chikezie- If Only For One Night. Damn you too. This is a nice, slow song, and he sure could do a lot to it but I don’t want him to go on much further either.
Brooke- Every Breath You Take… just make it better than last week.
Carly- Total Eclipse of The Heart- Uh huh.
Jason Castro- Fragile, he’s not a very good vocalist… he cracked on Hallelujah and if say, Carly did that, the judges would be all over her ass..except Randy. Luckily he’s got the unique factor…but I still find him quite boring.
Michael Johns- we are the champions.. good for him probably.
David Archuleta- You’re the voice… huh?
David Cook- Billie Jean: lol should be interesting.

Anyhow, after that rant, I’ll predict the order again. Last week I actually predicted quite a few right.. sorta.
I had Kristy going 2nd. Brooke White going 5th. David Cook going 6th. Carly going 7th. Jason 8th. Syesha 9th. Chikezie 10th. And Ramiele to close the show
So I actually did pretty good I got 8/11 right.
So tonight:
Ramiele
Chikezie
Syesha
Jason
Carly
David Cook… yeah, probably not. Cuz that would be 4 times in a row.
Brooke
Michael
David Archuleta
Then Kristy Lee Cook to close the show with a great version of God Bless the USA… hope i’m wrong!
DAMN YOU!
Ok, thing is, how could you send someone home tomorrow night while they exit us out with God Bless the USA? Just can’t imagine it… so congrats on another week to look forward to. (damn you..lol)

Now, I don’t know if this is true… but last week’s top 11 spoilers posted on Idol Blog Live also had the order the contestants performed and top 10 spoiler order better NOT be this order.

That’s the way I have them posted, too Justin but my thinking is they got this from tmz. Last week’s list came from mj’s and was from a person who had been to the dress rehearsal.
Bad enough that Archie would go last AGAIN…but to put Syesha first again is what makes me think this is NOT the order. That would be very unfair and Idol knows it!

I’m from Dolly’s hometown of Sevierville, TN, and we’re really looking forward to her appearance on American Idol. I think that David Cook will really do something cool and original with a Dolly tune and can’t wait to hear what it is.
It’s great that American Idol is highlighting Dolly’s songwriting. The Sevierville Chamber of Commerce has done the same thing for the last 4 years with the Mountain Soul Vocal Competition where contestants have to sing one of the 3,000+ songs Dolly has written. I think they’re still accepting text to be linkedentries for this year through April 11 and there are some really nice prizes for anyone who thinks they can sing a Dolly song in their own style.
