3/25: Idol top 10 performance night, Melinda Doolittle in Atlanta today
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Things started a little shaky but this was a fun night.
Theme is songs from the year they were born. It ended up being a melange of very very obscure tunes and very very famous ones. Kristy Lee Cook, by the way, saved herself by embracing Lee Greenwood and wrapping herself in the American flag. Gotta admire smart song choice! And where did David Archuleta dig that song up?
As for tomorrow, the choice is easy for me: Ramiele went first, should go home and will go home. The others in the bottom three: Chikezie and Jason Castro.
My top 10 in order: 1- David Cook, 2- Carly Smithson, 3-Michael Johns, 4- Syesha Mercado, 5- Brooke White, 6- Kristy Lee Cook, 7- David Archuleta, 8- Jason Castro, 9- Chikezie, 10-Ramiele Malubay
First up: Ramiele Malubay (“Alone” Heart) — This is what you call an insanely stupid move. Pick a song that season four Carrie Underwood made her own, that was one of her best performances of the year, one that made me think, wow, this girl doesn’t even need to sing country and sound great. Then Carly Smithson sang it in Hollywood and blew it out, too. Ramiele was truly pitchy and just plain awful. Apparently, she’s sick, which didn’t help matters. Randy: “It’s a little too big of a song.” Paula: “I’m really glad America has heard you sing… you barely have voice right now.” Simon: “It wasn’t as bad as Randy said. First part of the song was okay. Then it got shrieky and shouty. After last week you managed to survive, you’ll get by on that performance.” C
Jason Castro (“Fragile” Sting) This was not a hit by Sting. It’s a very subtle, low-key tune. It fits Jason’s ouvre perfectly and he does fine with it. It feels very coffeehouse and probably won’t move the needle in terms of building his fan base. Randy: “I love that song… that was a very good choice of song. I don’t know if you didn’t do anything vocally different.” Paula: “You played a little safe in your zone.” Simon: “You’ve had two bad weeks. I think it’s time you take this a bit more seriously. Everything about it was too laid back and not in your own world.” B (Jason admitted his guitar playing was a little sloppy and that he could have practiced more!)
Syesha Mercado (“If I Were Your Woman” Stephanie Mills) This was not a pop hit either and was barely a top 20 hit on the R&B charts. In other words, way obscure. It’s not a terribly bracing song either but she sings it well with heart and conviction. Randy: “This is the best you have ever sounded to us. Stellar. I’m shocked. I’m lovin’ it!” Paula: “This is going to be the moment everybody remembers where Syesha flipped it and becomes the dark horse and sails on through.” Simon: “It was definitely the best so far. I don’t think the end was as good as Randy thought. There’s a limit to your vocals and that stretched it.” B-plus/A-minus
Chikezie (“If Only For One Night” Luther Vandross) Another truly obscure that didn’t even hit the top 40 on the R&B charts in 1985. It felt dull and ordinary. Randy: “It was boring, dawg.” Paula: “You did a great job with the textures of the your vocals.” Simon: “I think you sang it well. Having said that, the performance was very cheesy.” B-minus
Brooke White (“Every Breath You Take” Police) Phil Stacey sang this just last year and it was okay. I don’t mind her trying it because she’s nothing like Phil Stacey. She false starts (nerves!). She’s also back behind the piano, her safety zone. She’s looking a lot like Meredith Baxter with the straightened hair. It’s a beautiful rendition. I really got into it. Randy: “I thought the front part was pretty good. When you got to the bridge, I didn’t like the arrangement when the band came in.” Paula: “I enjoyed this performance so much more than last week.” Simon: “I totally agree with Randy. If you had stayed on the piano, it would have sounded much more cool. Good enough to keep you in for another week but you have to work this out.” (I liked it, even with the band.) A-minus
MIchael Johns (“We Will Rock You/We are the Champions” Queen) He was very competitive as a child. “When I was little, I thought I’d be a tennis player. Then at 15, music found me and I ain’t sad.” Will Michael ever smile when he sings? He’s perpetually deadpan. Vocally, he was top notch this time around until near the end when he sounded a bit strained. But overall, another good - not great - performance. Randy: “Finally, you believe in yourself and used that big old voice. Dude, that was the best performance since you were on this show.” Paula: “This was your moment, your shining moment.” Simon: “This is the first time with you I saw star potential.” B-plus/A-minus
Carly Smithson (“Total Eclipse of the Heart” Bonnie Tyler) She was named after Carly Simon. She had monstrous curly hair as a child. “I always wanted to be a pop star like Madonna or Kylie Minogue,” she said. I love this song so much. It’s so cheesy but for me, also totally ninth grade. It’s a great over-the-top tune for Carly’s pipes and her overly serious facial expressions. Bravo! Now would she ever smile while singing? Randy: “I liked it, didn’t love it. Wasn’t quite the right song for you.” Paula: “I loved what you did at the end. That’s showing you are willing to go out there and stretch yourself.” Simon: “Something didn’t quite work because you were so tense and almost uptight… you need to lighten up there.” A-minus/A (Wow—Randy didn’t pimp her out for once!)
David Archuleta (“You’re the Voice” David Foster) I have no clue what this song is! I don’t see any evidence it was even a single in 1990. It sounds melodramatic but he sings it with authority. Randy: “A strange song choice. If you can sing, you can sing whatever.” Paula: “We’re all trying to figure that out.” Simon: “I actually didn’t like the performance at all. It was reminiscent of a theme park performance. It’s one of those ghastly songs with animated creatures with you and everyone joins in together. It’s not you.” B-plus I just found some info on the song here. It was a hit in Australia for John Farnham in 1987. re-recorded by Foster in 1990.
Kristy Lee Cook (“God Bless the USA” Lee Greenwood) Kristy goes country and picks one of those signature patriotic tunes. You must stand and put your hand over your heart NOW! Must vote for Kristy! She starts really low key but picks it up nicely with the chorus. I can sense Simon throwing up in his mouth. This really feels like a country fair. Hey, she’s still far better than Haley Scarnato! Vocally, very very good. Randy: “It was a very nice performance.” Paula: “A very poignant, respectful song. To me, I’ve seen better performances but your voice is much stronger.” Simon: “Your best performance by a mile! That was the most clever song choice I’ve heard in years.” B-plus
In the pimp spot: David Cook! (“Billie Jean” Michael Jackson) He’s been strumming a guitar since he was two. He goes for an acoustic rock version of this classic. This is the Chris Cornell/Audioslave version — not truly “original” per se, people. People keep comparing him to Daughtry but I think he’s more versatile and has great stage presence. And better vocals. That note near the end was amazing. Randy “You’re the most original, bold contestant we’ve ever had. You might be the one to win the whole lot!” Paula: “I’m blown away. I can’t sit down!” Simon: “That was brave. It could have either been insane or amazing. I have to tell you it was amazing.” A

If a girl goes first (Ramiele) then a boy has to be last (if they keep the boy-girl-boy-girl that they’ve been using). But since she’s singing freaking “God Bless the USA”, that train-wreck waiting to happen deserves the pimp spot.

The thing I love about this season so far is people keep surprising me. From one week to another my top group changes and evolves.
David Cook. Really this week, my top 5 are somewhat interchangeable. I think David sang this beautifully. He knows how to pick other people’s versions of songs that suit him the best. If he had done MJ’s version, it would have been awful.
Michael Johns. This was a HUGE risk that paid off. The song is almost trite today but Michael took it back to what Queen meant it to be. He connected with his audience and, for the first time, looked like he belonged in the top group!
3.Syesha….she just sang this song so well that she HAD to be number 3. Best I’ve seen her since top 24.
4.Kristy….Not only did she sing this well, she performed it well, too! Kristy is back!
Carly…she’s a good singer…not so much tonight.
Chikezie….disagree with the judges, I liked it a lot.
Brooke….IMO, she turned a song that’s slightly fear-invoking to a sweet little ditty. Nope!
Archie….this kid has a great voice…that was a terrible song choice for him and he sang it badly
Jason…..back in the olden days, when I was in college, he was always singing at the local coffee house and it was nice background music…nothing more.
10.Ramiele. NOPE!!!!!

Well, we had a lot of good performances, and the first WOW WOW WOW SIGNATURE PERFORMANCE of the year. Also, it is pretty clear cut who the vote off is probably going to be.
On to the rankings :
David Cook - Billie Jean - This will go down in Ido lore as the signature moment of season 7. This was just flat out amazing. David just left monchichi Archuleta in the dust and became the no doubt head and shoulders above the rest leader.
Michael Johns - We Are The Champions - Great performance that now pales in comparison to David Cook’s tour de force. Still this was Michael’s best performance since Light My Fire, and was absolutely great.
Kristy Lee Cook - God Bless the USA - A cook sweep tonight. By far her best performance of the year, and now she gets to have one in her wheel house next week with Dolly Parton mentoring COUNTRY WEEK.
Syesha Mercado- If I Were Yor Woman - The last 2 weeks she would have been in the top spot with this performance, but I am worried it is going to get lost in all the other great performances that came later in the show. this is Syesha’s style and she sounded fantastic.
Chikezie - If Only For One night - I thought Chikezie sang his heart out on this and put everything he had into the song. I loved it!
Carly Smithson- Total Eclipse of the Heart - I liked this, and thought it was perfect for Carly, but I agree with Simon and Randy, there was just something missing, and the last note was horribly beyond painful.
David Archuleta - You’re the Voice - This is such a nice song, let’s hold hand and sing along OOO OOO OOO OOO OOO OH GOD WHEN WILL IT END!!!!! David has a nice voice, and sang well, but this song sucked majorly polluted canal water, and no amount of david cutesy cute could save it.
Brooke White - Every breath You take - This was good, but just there. Kinda nice, kinda boring. Brooke did nothing to advance her position this week.
Jason Castro - Fragile - Another nice slow sweet Jason Performance. YAWN!
Ramiele Malubay - Alone - It kills me to put Ramiele here because I really like her, but facts are facts, this was not even close to the level of the other performances, and is 3 weak performances in a row. Ramiele honey, you are cute as a button, but start packing your bags.
WHO SHOULD AND WILL GO - Ramiele. She will be joined by jason for sure, and probably Brooke. But Chikezie and Syesha may need to sweat as they have not shown voting strength and thier performances while very good got lost in the big voices at the end. David A has no chance of bottom 3, so I will say Brooke, jason, Ramiele — bye bye Ramiele.

Mad.
Ramiele Malubay- I love her, but it was a bit shouty and pitchy!
Jason Castro- Just boring…sorry.
Syesha Mercado- Simon is being totally biased with her. Awesome performance!… and then Simon ruined it. Damn you Simon. You just want good ol’ Brooke to win. I thought it was great. NO BOTTOM 3!!! Please.
Chikezie Eze- Sang well, but soooo boring…I’m really not much of a fan and I hope he’s one of the next to go.
Brooke White- She actually sounded really good I thought…I still think she needs to deliver an amazing vocal… I’d like to hear her hold a long note well.
Michael Johns- Yeah, very good improvement. Middle was a bit overdone.
Carly Smithson- I actually agree with the judges…except Paula. Just not doing it for me tonight. But I like her.
David Archuleta- Surprisingly, I didn’t like him tonight. I agree with Simon…I didn’t like it… vocals were good…but not, not, not the song. He’ll still sail through with flying colors, and I would hope he would.
Kristy Lee Cook- They tricked me and decided to not let her close the show! Yeah! Man… I feel so .. blah. Simon’s really ruining it for me lately. She’s not good vocally and won’t get much better, even Paula hesitated.
David Cook- Best of the night. That’s all I can say… thank god he’s been one of my favorites from the start.
Rankings to come…

For those wondering about the Billie Jean arrangement — It is by CHRIS CORNELL and is on his current album.
Also, Ryan credited Chris with the arrangement during the introduction. That is two weeks in a row that David has made sure the true arranger of the song has recieved credit.

Hey Mikey S. What up dawg? For real. I thought David Cook’s Billie Jean was the best ever on AI, topping Fantasia’s Summertime. With everyone pooping on Michael Jackson over the past few years, David infused geek with chic and I would totally mell out with this song at his concert!

Hi Dee! It’s me! Yeah, I didn’t like AI last year and didn’t watch it. The talent was not my style so I skipped out. But this year I feel we’re back to something similar to Season 4 and 5. Lots of great singers and potential. I’m just hoping David A doesn’t win. He is so Mickey Mouse Club and I can’t imagine anyone outside the Nickelodeon crew buying his music. At seventeen, he’s the girliest boy I’ve seen in a long time. And it’s not his fault, but that of his Dad. Poor boy.

Interesting show tonight. I must give props to David Cook! He was the best by FAR! After him I like Shyesha, Carly and Chikeze. I’m appalled by Kristy Lee Cook’s blatant attention grab with the maudlin and sappy “God Bless the USA”. How trite. And what was David Archuleta thinking!?! What a crappy, treacley, theme-park-y song! It was the WORST of Disney-on-Broadway! Did ayone else catch Simon’s comment about “who is chosing your songs…”? Was that a slap at David’s supposedly overly-controlling father??? Hmmmmm… Is the fight for the control of Archuleta on???

My actual rankings now…
David Cook
Syesha Mercado- And no, it’s not b/c she’s one of my favorites, I really really think she’s a fantastic singer.
Michael Johns
Carly Smithson
David Archuleta
Brooke White
Kristy Lee Cook
Ramiele Malubay
Chikezie Eze
Jason Castro
My Personal Bottom 3- Jason Castro, Chikezie, Kristy Lee Cook.
Choice to Go home: Def. Kristy, but it won’t happen so let’s say Chikezie… or Jason… just not a fan. really. except the originality But that’s getting old!
What the bottom 3 will probably be: Syesha (STUPID!), Chikezie, maybe Jason…i just know he has that fan base so how could it happen? or Ramiele
Who will probably go home: eh, maybe Chikezie, but then again who knows.
American Idol can be totally unpredictable.

Thanks, Deidre, I always enjoy reading… You have to say this is the best top 10 they’ve had. Everyone else had to be thinking what I was with David A’s song - What the hell song is this? He was born in 1990, so I must have been asleep that year. With David Cook’s version of the Chris Cornell’s song, you have to think the artist song that is sung has to love it. About 100,000 people are downloading that tonight - some even buying it. FYI - Cornell is the ex-lead of Soundgarden and Audioslave.

Songluvr, What did you think of idol tonight? I really wanted Adam to go before Penn on DWTS.

Neg’s Take.
ONE I had Michael Johns pegged for the top spot until…David Cook showed up. WOW. Friggin’ “Billy Jean” by Pedophile Jackson and he absolutely kills it, drills it, and makes it into the top performance of the night. So talented and so original, I think he’s a lock to win it all.
Two Michael Johns. Perfect song for him, and he performed it perfectly. Great vocal, great arrangement, great job. He’s been strong two weeks in a row now.
Three* Kristy. Such a great song choice, and for the first time in a long time she looked confident and strong on stage. I’m a big fan of her genre and can say that everyone else like me out there who appreciate the soulful country sound was puffed up with pride hearing her sing “God Bless the USA.”
Four Chicky. Again, three weeks running, he performs brilliant vocals and dopes a great job of entertaining and arranging. Randy and Simon must have been smoking crack tonight because Chicky did a smokin’ hot performance.
Five Syesha. Very, very pretty vocal. Really think she’s stepped it up the last two weeks and has connected emotionally with her songs. Simon made a good point, though, that she is at the limit of her range when she tries to belt it out. She needs to sing pretty not powerful.
Six Carly. What? Randy didn’t obnoxiously pimp her performance? Hmmm…maybe he was afraid ofCarly getting pimping backlash among the voters. I really liked her singing tonight, but the sausage dress was brutal and the constipated, sour puss face was rightly criticized by Simon.
Seven Brooke. Very nice, but a little stumble at the beginning. Also, weird looking straightening of her hair, and a less than perfect song choice didn’t do her any favors.
Eight Ramielle. I’m tired of her. She’s just a poor entertainer who never gives a wow performance. Nice voice, but the too loud backround vocals made it seem like she was yelling to be heard.
Nine Castro. His act is soooo played. Smug, stoner, moron dude whispers through another forgettable song…ZZZZZZZ
Ten Archuletta. WTF was that? Seriously, that song was the worst crap I have ever heard. He was just brutal vocally and on stage. Time for him to go to prom and sing his cheese, because he doesn’t belong here anymore.
Bottom three: Ramiele, Castro and Archuletta.
Going home: Pack your weed, stoner moron dude, you’ll be dancing with Ellen in a couple days.

boots, re Michael and Buckhead, no… they’ve been showing “Buckhead, GA” all along, with is NOT where he lived, lol… he lived in the Buckhead Community of Atlanta, not the Buckhead TOWN in Georgia, which is about an hour away! But no one seems to care about correcting that; it’s been reported on news, entertainment news, and blogs all over the place (at least georgia blogs, lol) … so i guess they just don’t mind being wrong!
I think Deirdre pegged it way back before the show…Ramielle made a bad choice of songs, and just doesn’t have the power to carry it off… and didn’t carry it off, tho it was a little better than i expected.
VinRose, hey gal! good to see your smiling face! and yes, the lag on the blog is a bummer! D coined the term “mushblog” and thus we are “mushblogians” until we can get a better format!
Nite all…
Oh, P.S. Harmony … We were right on Monica, but Penn leaving was a disappointment; it should have been Adam. Oh well. Looking forward to next week’s performances tho’!
peace

Harmony, I thought tonight was great, but looking at dialidol has me pretty nervous right now since I do love Chikezie…
Guess I might as well rank them.
David Cook - Another great great job. I do however wish that Simon wouldn’t say things like ‘you could win this thing’ - could impact the voting unfairly either in David’s favor or against.
Chikezie* - I love this guy. He’s got a voice like velvet. I do think we see ‘him’ shine more on more energetic songs, but he delivered another flawless vocal tonight.
Syesha - Great job, great emotional connection, again. As I LOVE the Gladys rendition, Syesha may have played with the melody a teensy bit too much for my liking, but at the same time, she made it her own, as they say.
Michael Johns - Bravo. Finally could see him as a star performer, like Simon said. Still, I need to hear him bluesy again, and ALL us ladies appreciate a good love song.
David Archuletta - This kid has talent beyond his years; he’s really something. I have long known this song from an old David Foster cd (cassette?), and I like the song and the whole cd. Very good job.
Carly - This girl is so good. Definitely one of her weaker outings IMO, but still… After Amanda, tattoos notwithstanding, Carly as a rocker seems wannabeish, and she’s too good to be a wannabe.
Brooke - Like Randy said, great first half, then the second half fell a little flat for me. She’s growing on me still - and I liked the straightened hair for a change of pace.
Ramiele - sigh. I only have her this high because of the strength of her voice, but homegirl is in over her head.
Kristy - just sigh. Make that SIGH
Jason - Cute and seems nice but that is IT. ARGH me and my peeps are tired of seeing his glazey-eyed loopy goofy-grinning-at-the-camera I’m-too-wasted-to-care self.

Well I might as well throw some random thoughts out there…
Harmony: you took the words right out of my mouth, Simon called out Archie! I like that Simon was willing to thump the golden child, he knows that there is other talent up there, someone needs to send daddy packing.
I was 50% correct with my boot prediction, and someone should whisper to Ramiele that short girls shouldn’t wear boots like that. Speaking of wardrobe, someone needs to stop Paula from dressing herself.
As for the performances: I’m really starting to like Brooke. Michael Johns did great, but he needs to prove he can do better than imitate Freddie Mercury. Finally, and I realize that I’m alone in this, but I HATED that arrangement of Billie Jean. David Cook sang it well, but I hope I never hear it again.

Wherever you rank these cats, they all have good pipes. At this point in the competition, the judges (and hopefully America) should be looking for which of these performers is the best entertainer. David Cook has done the most to show his star potential with great results. Chikezie has taken some chances with mixed results. The others, IMO, have stuck with the safety of ballads. AI is more than choosing someone talented enough to sing the National Anthem at a Turner Field! They all could do that. As Simon told Jason last night, the bottom 6 or 7 need to decide if they really want to be there and plan their future performances accordingly.

Wow, one of the first nights in a long time that there wasn’t a distinct losser, though there were definite winners.
David Cook and Michael Johns blew the rest away tonight!
Kristy Lee: played the Patriotic card, but I do like that song and she sang it beautifully.
Brooke: Not one of her better nights, but as a big fan of the Piano Man, I love her style of music, as well as her stage personality
Syesha: She’s better then she’s been ranked in the past, though I must admit I missed most of her song last night.
Carly: Not a bad performance, but pales in comparision to some of the others. Is it just me or is she losing steam?
David A.: Nope, Still don’t like him… He CAN sing, but I never understood why they made him such a golden boy early on.
Ramiele: Not a strong performance, but if she’s sick, that’s understandable. Overall, she’s outclassed
Chikezie: Another good singer, but overall he doesn’t really do much for me and is easily overshadowed.
Jason: I can understand Simon’s comment, he just seems laid back about everything… I have to second the comment of: Coffeehousish.
My bottom three: Jason, Ramiele, and Chikezie, with Ramiele going home.
Top Four: David Cook, Michael Johns, Brooke White, and Syesha. There is no clear winner yet.
Fifth and Sixth: Carly & David A.

I disagreed 100% with Simon and Randy about Chikeze. He was magnificent. He had me mesmorized with the first note. I don’t understand how the judges enjoyed Kristy Lee, Brooke and David Archuletta but found Chikeze boring. I only enjoyed three performances: Micheal Johns, Syesha and Chikeze. I missed David Lee Cook because I had switched over to see who was kicked off DWTS.

Morning mushblogians!!!
What a great night last night and what a great season Idol is having!!! From Cook to Johns to Syesha. From Kristy’s comeback to Chikezie’s old school style, I think it’s been a long time since I had so much fun watching Idol!
While David Cook seems to be the front runner, at this point there are a few others that I wouldn’t count out. Archie still has teen girls swooning, Michael Johns reminded us that he IS a singer, Carly’s poor showing last night hides that terrific voice and Syesha truly DID become the dark horse in the race.
That’s the kind of night that will keep Idol going for a couple more years!

for the first time i feel like we have a WIDE variety of styles represented by the singers, and more of them are remaining true to THEIR style rather than trying to be Whiney or Celine, which seemed to be the goal in many years past for the girls, at least. I agree wholeheartedly with D, more fun last night than in a LONG time on AI!

Poor Chickeeze..beautiful voice but just dont know what to do with it. the poor lil pillsbury doe boy Needs a Strong song and add some of his Own Persona in it like David Cook(who’s voice is not as nice as Chickeezees but very very original, great range and distinctive..Chick.he may not go home tonight but I see his boat taking in water. David Cook: all right for taking other peoples masterpieces and turning them into something totally new and his own. At first I could not even hear any thing recognizable about Billie Jean. I wonder what Michael thought of it? The girl singing I am proud to be an American if anything sounded the most cheezest to me rather than Chickeeze. We are the Champions, David Cook, the best for me last night..signed Lonely Old Man:-)( i kind of like my new nick name thanks glow worm, inch worm..dirt eater, Whatever)

First, let me apologize for my long post. I actually took notes last night so that I had my true thoughts on the performances.
1 -David Cook Wow, he does have a big head, that might explain the hair issues. I wonder if he can come up with his own arrangements, since he uses so many other people’s. He did a great job on the “big note”. The best of the night.
the video clips are way too long
2 - Michael Johns I think the band really got into this one. He sounded really good, but the background singers didn’t. I think I would have liked the ending more if he brought it down soft.
do Randy’s teeth look especially white tonight?
3- Carly She bounces a lot, with her booty out and bent over. A good vocal performance until the end – wow, that was bad. Is Paula listening to the same show I am?
4 – Chikezie Another song I don’t know. Did they not have any popular songs to choose from? Very pitchy at first, hate the audience clap along, he did a great job on the “big note”.
5 – Syeshia I don’t know this song either. She started sharp, I thought it was predictable and nasaly. She makes weird scrunching faces.
6 – Kristy Lee Cook I always think of St. Mtn when I hear this song. I thought she rushed threw it and it was twangy. The “big note” was hard on my ears. She will get the proud American vote along with the guys who like tight jeans vote. Not bad for someone who should have been gone 2 weeks ago.
they chop the songs so bad it makes the arrangements weird
7 – Brooke I wish she would cough and clear her through when she talks. False start, I am tired of her on the piano. She loses the ends of words when she sings, and when the band came in, she went off key. She should have stood at that moment and gotten off the piano.
8 – Archie What the heck is this song? He has taken up the Carly bounce. I guess he found his song with meaning. Decent performance.
9 – Jason Casto Good tone, his voice got a little lost in the chorus. Not enough actual singing for such a short song. I don’t know this one either.
10 Ramiele BAD SONG CHOICE! She started off key, the back up singers outsang her. She was shouting and it had a very weird ending.
I think poor Ramiele might be going home tonight. With her in the bottom 3, I think we will see Chikezie and perhaps Jason. Or either of those could be replaces by Syeshia, just because she doesn’t seem to have that fan base.

I need the judges to lay off the “original” tag they are throwing on to David C. NONE of the 10 are original. With that said I like David C
Chikezie was a LOT better than Randy and Simon gave him credit for..Luther would have been proud of that vocal.
Syesha.. really good
Brooke and Jason- the same old same old.. BTW Jason needs to be gone. He is the weakest singer by 15 miles
Michael- it LOOKED good but it didnt sound great… just OK
David A- theme park performance
Carly- better than the judges thought
Kristy— she just makes me laugh. Hopefully that will be her swan song..tonight..lol
Ramiele- times up

Muggle-my hubby says that the girls are the supporters of Dred’d Jason, his gorgeous eyes and clear skin, gentle face — Hubby’s opinion is that, even more than cutie-pie archie is what the young girls want “for themselves” so they’ll keep him on a few more weeks. I dunno, Hubby’s a pretty good observer of the human race, lol. Could be right!
Carly’s finishing notes were “finishing” indeed for me… i felt like she rocked it pretty well, then suddenly remembered that she’s trying to be the next Celine and had to, just HAD to, hit the “big note”…bah! hated it.
I’m a huge Chikezie fan, so i hope he comes out safe, but i fear he just doesn’t have the fan base. He IS a bit “retro” … old skool, if you will … and would do well with the Brook Benton, Smokey Robinson, etc. styles. And what, pray tell, is WRONG with that, Simon? Just because YOU don’t like it doesn’t make it wrong…i think there are a lot of romantics out there who would LOVE to have someone in that genre expressing feelings for them in song!!!
Also, agree about wondering if DC can arrange his OWN version of a song instead of copping someone else’s already done. Will be interesting to see.
Country with Dolly should be fun!

Kristy might’ve sung well, but I couldn’t get by the horrific and pandering song choice. Even more unbelievable were the judges’ reactions, especially Simon.

Castro’s base indeed is 99.9% female, but not tweener Archuletta girls. His are the late teens right up into the late 20’s and early 30’s. This will kill him tonight, because they are not the mindless twits like the 10-14 YO girls that are so blindly obsessed with Arch. These women have brains and will not vote en masse for a cute stoner guy if he is boring, talentless, stupid, and most importantly, doesn’t seem to care about them.
His act was fun for them with a little sex appeal and rebellion, but now it’s just lacking authenticity, which is exactly what he couldn’t afford to be and still keep that base.
Ramielle is on the ropes, but her base will be more loyal and her being sick will help rally her fans to save her.
JC will have no resurrection. He is done.

Hi ya’ll….
Wayy to busy lately. Just wanted to pop in and say “hey.” I caught Idol last night. Brooke, David C. and Michael did a very nice job.
I agree with Rodney, Alone (Carrie) should be retired. So should Open Arms (Clay), Respect (Kelly)Summertime (Fantasia), and any Whitney. Just me…but if I can still remember a previous Idol singing it, I would be very careful about choosing that song.
What’s with Archie’s preachy song again?
Oh, and about the “wildcard,” I would rather have Alaina back than Kady. (If choosing between them). Alaina has a really nice voice and was more consistent. Kady never sounded as good as she did in her original audition. Unless, she comes back as comic relief and does a Britney/Rascal Flatts impression on stage….I would love to see that! Ha.
Anyway…back to work!

I too think Ramiele’s done. She was pitchy, but I think she still sings…OK. The performances of the other competitors, though, were well above hers. She’s been a bottom 3 dweller for a while, and I’m a little surprised she squeaked into the top 10.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the artist who performed the song Archuleta performed last night: John Farnham is the guy who replaced the original lead singer of Little River Band (remember them??) in the early 80’s. The song, “You’re The Voice” was a single off of his first solo album post-LRB that was a major MEGA hit for him in most of the international markets EXCEPT the US. He’s a virtual unknown here, except among us long-time LRB fans. I belong to Yahoo’s LRB Blog group, and it was semi-active last during and after Archuleta’s performance last night. It was fantastic to hear that song on US TV!
I have a small gripe as well: Ramiele performed Heart’s “Alone”. Didn’t she say she was born in 1987? Well, the song came out in 1985…I know. I bought their album that year.

Good morning. First, I have a question. Where was the blog yesterday? Every other week we have had a blog about what to expect on the performance night—full of fun speculation, etc.Maybe I looked in the wrong place.
Second, my two cents worth. I love Chikezie, too, linny. I think he would do himself a favor by choosing familiar songs. I hope he has a chance to do something from Marvin Gaye or something in that vein. The other thing is that I remember David A from Star Search as having a very, very, soulful sound at times. He can nail the r&b stuff, should he get a chance. Too bad he is not being allowed to make his own choices. I believe Simon was right about that. The David Foster thing—could that be David A’s father’s way of schmoozing the great D. Foster? Josh Groban anyone? Does he want to hitch his son’s star to that wagon?
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

KPH! good to see your smiling face! Agreed on the Simon comment… too bad Archie is a minor, they can’t just shoo dad away :-(
Farnham! of course, LRB… i KNEW i should know that name, LOL!!! thanks Tam! Oh, and with regard to Alone… i know it came out in 85 but what year did it hit the ‘charts’ as a single? that MAY be how she got it in, although IMHO it was a HUGE mistake on her part!
Good point about the not the younger teens but the teen-twenties (tweenties?) being JC’s fan base; it makes more sense that way, what hubby said, too! and i think you’re right…he just doesn’t seem to be able to get in the heart of a song, he just performs it…nicely, perhaps, but without any emotional connection.
all right, addicted as i am to blogging, i have lots to do, so as X would say, gotta go work!!!! ~¿@

This is the sickect bunch of kids ever, man - I’m so tired of hearing how great you “should” be but because your voice mysteriously went away (did you hear her say it - “it just went away!”), well, now you suck.
And she did suck, make no mistake. Ramiele was awful last night. Just awful. Easily the worst performance of the past few weeks for anyone.
D.Cook was fantastic - as were Syesha (who sang forcefully, not shouting - Ramiele should take notes) and honestly, Brooke. Brooke has a lot of talent and her own vibe going and I really fell for her a few weeks ago.
Cheesey-kezie can go with Ramiele as far as I’m concerned. The rest (Castro, Smithson, etc.) are good enough to keep around for a while.
But we’ll find out tonight, won’t we???

Had to jump in on your comment that “Fragile” was not a hit by Sting. This is probably one of his two or three best songs ever as a solo artist—way off the mark there.

Willie, can you elaborate a little bit on the point you are trying to get across. It’s a little difficult to discern what your message is when you compress it into a single sentence. Please give us a healthy write up regarding your opinion; I just can’t understand the condensed blurbs that you are throwing out.
cc: Best song does not equal a hit. “Fragile” is a great song, but it wasn’t a hit: right on the mark.

first: woeeee wooooeeee woe woe woe!
To the “other” Rodney — ain’t it the truth???? Every week it seems like they say about someone “you were sick” “you lost your voice” “heard you were under the weather” “are you feeling better” “blah blah blah” … in years past you KNOW some people had rough days, maybe even really SICK days… but they performed … or not … without the “excuses”. I don’t so much blame the kids, actually… it’s ryan or the judges who keep bringing it up. OK. Syesha during AUDITIONS…. that was a fun backstory about her trying to write everything so she could sing her way into the finals… but now… babes and dudes, you are IN the finals… sing, perform, do your best… and judges and host, let them just perform. We don’t need to hear about every cough or sneeze or sleepless night!
and while you’re at it, could you sort of lock Mr. Archie Sr. OUT of the building??? sheesh. poor MRS. Archie Sr.!!!
let’s see, now that i’m at lunch, is there anything else i want to talk about???
Country Theme for next week…need to start polishing up on what songs the kids might sing… will it be a Dolly songbook, or just a country songbook? if it’s NOT Dolly only, then will there be any sort of limitation on the scope of what they choose?
Kristy Lee can only Amazing Grace-God Bless the USA her way through so many times, but Country week should be at least SOMEWHAT comfortable for her.
I guess i need to find out what the scope of choice is for next week before i go off speculating, yes?
linny googles Dolly Parton songbook and sees what MIGHT be available…
yeah, i think that’s enough …. wooooeee woe woe woe wooooeee!

Hi, Linny…leave it to me. I’ll steer you in the right direction whenever I hear a song from a former LRB member..LOL. After all, I have LRB-dar. It’s a good sickness, acquired since the age of 14. I don’t think there’s a cure, especially since I’m now 43 and don’t see any signs of recovery.
Don’t know when “Alone” actually charted. I thought it was the debut single, followed by “These Dreams”. I could have it mixed up, though.
By the way, there’s a video clip of part of Archuleta’s performance, followed by Simon’s critique on www.tmz.com. Hysterical.
I think Archuleta may still survive results night tonight, but he may be a bottom 3 feeder along with Ramiele and possibly Brooke. I think Brooke is great, but she hasn’t really given a STRONG, memorable performance yet. If she keeps this up, she’ll be gone in a snap.
Did anyone else thing that Cook’s version of “Billie Jean” was a little bit bizarre? I love and gravitate towards anything DIFFERENT. But, this was a little bizarre even for me. However, maybe that’s his genre. The judges and the audience (and most of the bloggers here it seems) seem to like the bizarre, in the 15th dimension type music. So, my thinking is Cook is not only safe but may win this thing.
I have a particular affinity for Aussies, though (duh). So, I’ll root on Michael as long as I can! His Queen performance ROCKED!!

LOL!! sorry D, you caught me out to lunch … no comments from the peanut gallery, please! but i’m glad you’re back!!! and three cheers for AT&T getting you back on line so quickly!!!
Tami— i think it was on Rock Star last year, or maybe the first year, that something about LRB came up and the band got a lot of “press” … trying to remember what it was, tho… when you turn “my age” things don’t come back to mind quite as quickly as for you young’uns!!!
All I can say about “billie jean” is that when Deirdre first posted that DCook was to sing it, my mind just totally balked. All i could hear in my head was the MJ squeaky version, and it just would NOT fit around DC… then it was announced he was doing this other version (sorry gang, i forgot the guy’s name) … at least it was in the modern rock genre … however, it didn’t sound to me anything like the original, so i couldn’t hate it … but i didn’t LIKE it particularly, either. Hubby on the other hand, says it’s one of the better songs of the era (i guess he’s talking lyrics, since he’s a poet/lyricst) meh. had to just let him have his opinion on that one, LOL!!! (like, as IF i could change his opinion about most anything, HA!)
But then, after almost 40 years together, we tend to tolerate a LOT from each other, LOL!
Oh, and D…. if the landscaped property somehow becomes trashed tonight, i promise not to mention your name…

Dierdre, I asked earlier in the day, but where was the blog yesterday? It sounds like y’all had fun speculating and talking about what was going to be performed. I looke and looked, but I could not find you yesterday. I usually link up via the AJC.com site. Would you tell me how to find you, other than on the day after the performances? Thanks.

harrietth..we were here yesterday but it was very quiet. Not a lot of chatting until nearly the end of the day.
Go to ajc.com/blogs/AmericanIdol. or go to the ajc.com page and you’ll find 2 ways to get to us. One is on the right in a box. A number of places are listed in the box including ajcblogs. Or look on the left under the big headline box and you’ll see a list of 4 blogs…instead of clicking a specific blog, click the banner AJC Blogs and that will take you to a long list of blogs. You’ll find a link to this under the access atlanta heading.

Here are my rankings for this week:
David Cook - It’s a toss-up really between David Cook and Michael Johns in my mind as to who gave the best performance tonight, but I give the nod to David Cook for singing the less familiar version of his song and delivering it very well.
Michael Johns - His best performance on the show to date. He’s in my personal top three favorites (the others being David Cook and Brooke White), but he hasn’t lived up to expectations until tonight.
Brooke White - Again, I thought she did really well. Not an easy song to sing and nobody commented on this fact at all.
David Archuleta - Good performance of a song almost nobody has ever heard. Good not great.
Carly Smithson - I thought she did quite well except for the last series of notes. I did not pick up on her being tense until the judges started sharing their remarks. I am not a fan of the tattoos, but the girl can sing.
Kristy Lee Cook - FINALLY!!! Okay, she may not be the most gifted singer in this competition, and I realize that this is not a modeling competition (which I think she would run away with), but she is a very attractive lady who to this point has not exploited that fact (as, say, Haley Scarnato, did last year in her farewell performance). I like her a lot and am happy she got to become part of the final 10. I think she will be in the final 9 after her song choice (not necessarily her singing ability or nationwide popularity) last night.
Chikezie - Last week I sort of agreed with the judges. This I totally disagreed with Randy and Simon. I thought it was a perfect song choice and a very good performance.
Jason Castro - In the words of Randy, “It was just kinda awright for me”.
Syesha Mercado - While others marvel at her ability to hit the high notes, it sounds like screeching to me.
Ramiele Malubay - I just don’t know what happened. I ranked her number one in the first week of final 24 performances, but as each week has passed her performance has left me less in love with her abilities or her ability to show the ability I feel certain is inside of her.
I don’t know how any of the contestants put up with the kind of intensity they face each and every week. It is easy for us viewers to sit back and critique folks who have loads more talent than we do. My point is that I am just stating my opinion and that does not make my opinion any more right or any less right than anybody else’s opinion.
