4/1: Diana DeGarmo at Braves opener
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Season three runnerup Diana DeGarmo spoke with on and off for about 20 minutes in section 107 at Turner Field near the Braves dugout before the hometown opening day game tonight as she prepped to do the National Anthem. Here are some photos I took:

ABOVE: Diana confers with her onsite “handler” Austin Rhodes

Sarah Averill, 9, poses with Diana after she sings.

ABOVE: Diana sings near the pitching mound.

ABOVE: A closeup from the monstrous Turner field screen.
Diana is a veteran of singing the National Anthem at sporting events. She has sung for Georgia Tech, the Falcons, the Hawks and the Braves to name a few. Her first time for the Braves was 12 years ago as a third grader. “I was so nervous, my knees were shaking,” she said, dressed in a red shirt, white jacket and blue jeans. “I did it every year for the Braves until I was 18.” Prior to doing the opening day, her biggest National Anthem for the Braves was July 4th after Idol in 2004. At the time, she even got an official DeGarmo Braves jersey. Last year was the first year she went to opening day just for fun and recalled that it was “freezing.”
She says she always wears some sort of red, white and blue get up for the National Anthem. “I’ve just toned down the rhinestones and sparklies,” she said.
Although she doesn’t need to do anthems anymore, she likes to do it to get to go to a game for free as a Braves fan.
Tonight, she did a robust but very straightforward National Anthem. She holds the word “free” extra long and gets huge applause. “It’s a really important song for everybody including me so I don’t mess with it,” she said.
Diana said she’s never had a chance to meet any of the big stars like Chipper Jones and John Smoltz. She becomes quite self-deprecating. “I’m not at that level of coolness,” she said. “One day maybe when I’m a multiplatinum star.”
And she’ll help pout in a pinch. Last year, Georgia Tech’s national anthem singer had gotten sick at the last second and they called her three hours before the game. She was at the mall at the time so she ran home to change, then got stuck in traffic. Fortunately, she had a friend with her who stayed in her car while she parked illegally and ran to the game, just in time to do the anthem.
She moved to Nashville in January just before CMT’s “Gone Country” debuted to pursue a country career. She’s now renting a home outside of Nashville and working with songwriters to put together a country album. (“I live in the boonies with the wildlife,” she said. “It was the best deal for the money and I can sing at the top of my lungs, something I couldn’t do if I had gotten a condo.”)
John Rich has committed to producing it. She hopes to have an album out by the end of the year. She thinks she can bring a blend of Faith Hill and Wynonna Judd into her singing. With blondes such as Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert hot in the country world, she said “a brunette needs to mix it up.” (She did note she was blonde for a bit but went back to darker hair as lead of “Brooklyn” in 2006. It’s not quite that dark now.)
She tried to explain why John Rich picked Julio Iglesias Jr. over her on “Gone Country.” “I think he was thinking bigger picture. He was thinking of bringing in the Spanish speaking market into country, bring the borders together.” Diana has nothing to complain about because she ultimately got a production deal with Rich anyway. She’s still seeking a label and distribution deal but she’s confident she’ll get one.
Diana said the women were okay with Iglesias winning but Dee Snider, Bobby Brown and Sisqo weren’t so thrilled. “They all thought they were going to win!” she said. Most of the people, she said, are planning to record and release the songs they wrote and performed on the show.
Her favorite to win it all is David Cook. She thinks the Daughtry-type fans won’t let what happened to him happen to Cook. She is mildly annoyed that Michael Johns is not American but thinks he’s a good singer. She also expects Brooke White to go furthest among the women. Her take on Ramiele: “She’s a little out of her range.” And of the folks she keeps in touch with from her year, she mentioned Amy Adams and Matt Rogers.
You’ll get more of her “Idol” thoughts later this week on Us magazine’s Web site. She’s supposed to do a blog on this week’s performance show.
Over four years, Diana has been cautious around me the times we’ve met in person and tonight was no exception. (She was more relaxed and gabby when we did an interview by phone prior to “Gone Country.”). Though polite, she didn’t look remotely happy to see me. She brought along a few musician friends from Nashville but didn’t introduce them to me. She wasn’t conversational. She didn’t even say goodbye. I know a lot of her fans still resent me for not jumping completely on the Diana bandwagon in 2004 so it’s possible that affected Diana’s perception of me. Still, since then, I’ve gone out of my way to chronicle her career in the fairest fashion I could. Seriously — I don’t expect her to embrace me. I am a journalist, not her friend. But her coolness, considering her normal bubbly approach toward everybody else around her, is perplexing.
In other “Idol” news:
- MTV.com has a very cool deal where four troops in Iraq at the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg review “Idol.”. From last week’s show, they liked Michael Johns, couldn’t stand David Archuleta. They also enjoyed Syesha.
Major label reject, Kristy Lee Cook, has been teetering on the brink of elimination all season long, though she hit a high note this week performing Lee Greenwood’s red-state-rousing “God Bless the USA.” Randy, Paula and Simon lauded the “smart” song choice, with Cowell calling it Cook’s “best performance by a mile.” But how did the patriotic anthem play with our judges in uniform? The song resonated with the troops but Kristy’s rendition did not. “We did not really buy it We were more motivated by [Michael Johns’] “We Are the Champions,” 19-year-old Nathan wrote. “I think after hearing that song we were all ready to go fight.”And they came gunning for early “Idol” favorite David Archuleta, whose confusing song choice left the military men at a loss, though they had little trouble finding some strong words in their curt condemnation - “hate” being the one that stands out the most.
David Archuleta, “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham Nathan: “I had no clue what the song was.” Steve: “This song sucks!
- Frenchie Davis will undergo surgery to remove a vocal cord polyp, according to AP..

Good interview, Rodney, Diana seemed pretty forthcoming. I don’t see what you posted as being a big deal since she wasn’t rude to you. If she was, I’d be saying something else. I agree about David Cook, too!
Can’t believe the Braves lost. Then again, what else is new?

Rodney, Thanks for the write up On Diana, ( I personally adore the young lady) Ill admit I use to get very upset with you and your perception of Diana during her year on idol) you were pretty brutal to her So I can somewhat understand why she would still be a little weary of you… But I will say hear lately you have been very kind in your interviews pertaining to her. So Thank you for that, Now off to see if I can find a video of her singing the Anthem.. :)

Most of her fans have forgiven you because you’ve been nicer lately so you can’t blame us for Diana’s attitude anymore
Rodney she talked to you on and off for 20 minutes and even let you trail her around taking pictures and you are still bitching because she didn’t make you the “OMGZ!!111 Most!Important!Person! There!??”
You weren’t there WITH her and I’m sure she had other people to talk to, say goodbye to, etc. And as has already been mentioned, you weren’t exactly supportive during Idol and over the years you HAVE taken shots at her. The fact that you’ve been much better lately doesn’t make that go away immediately.
By the way, complaining and whining in print because she didn’t seek you out and say goodbye is exactly the kind of thing that will continue to make her wary of you, don’t you realize that?

Well you started out with a good informative article and I thank you for it. However, I feel the whole paragraph about how Diana acted toward you was unnessesary. It’s your job as a journalist to provide us with unbiased information, and the last part gave off more of a gossip vibe. If you want to gossip about celebs than get a web blog. For an actual publication I found it a bit unprofessional.

This is my 1st post although I read here frequently. It’s obvious that a lot of you have become good friends and I feel a little intimdated joining in. You all have great comments about AI. I too am a Diana G. fan. However, I was at the Braves game last night, and I have to say she just looked awful. She reminded me of an old actress trying to look much younger. As for the Braves… UGH… here we go again! By the way, some of you turned quickly on Rodney. His blog is always terrific. Give him some love this morning - he was obviously hurt by Diana!

Morning mushblogians!
DawnH…please don’t feel intimidated! We’re generally a friendly bunch except for a few gate-crashers…..not that there’s a gate! :-) We are looking forward to hearing your opinions and a special thanks for defending Rodney.
I agree with you on how Diana looks if Rodney’s pictures are telling the story. I’ve seen her look a lot better than that.
To Diana’s fans. Rodney has been nothing but kind to her since I’ve been on this blog, which is a loooong time. This is a blog not a review or a news article. It’s Rodney’s impressions of the time he spent with Diana last night. His perceptions are HIS. Since most or all of you weren’t there while Rodney was talking to Diana, I find it odd that y’all are telling him he’s wrong…or explaining why she behaved that way.
Nobody said Diana was wrong to act that way….Rodney, if I’m reading him correctly, wonders why and if it is something he has done.

The spoilers that I posted last night are almost surely not true. However, I DO think that some of the song list is accurate.
I have heard rumors that Archie has sung I Will Always Love You a number of times before.( since Dolly’s favorite version of the song belongs to Vince Gill, that’s not as big a stretch as we might think). Another rumor states that some of Michael’s Atlanta friends claim that he used to sing 9 to 5 all the time.

And the D fans come out fighting….no need. Rodney is doing his job, telling us the news AND expressing his opinion. Thank you, Rodney. I don’t like the heavy eyeliner look, it makes her look a little old - and she really isn’t. I bet she did a great job with the anthem though. I can trully appreciate and respect a singer that just sings that song well without trying to “mix it up”.

I have always liked Diana’s voice. She can usually sing the heck out of any song. I think her problem season 3 was youth. She sang wonderfully but lost in the emotion department.
Anyway, I’m happy to hear that she’s keeping busy and working on a new angle.

Lara, how old is Diana? She looks as if she’s in her thirty’s, Isn’t she like 20? She has a beautiful voice & is a very seasoned vocalist but her make over isnot that impressive. Sorry Diana, just not feeling your look, I think she needs to go lighter on the makeup (extremely too heavy & hard). She needs a more youthful look.

I’ll add my 2cents… Rodney not only reports, he also opines, and thus, his OPINIONS are as valid as his NEWS. I agree with D’s note that he’s NOT dissing Diana, he’s wondering if the chill will ever wear off; yes, he was a little cool on her as a talent in the early days, but if we all liked the same person doing the same thing all the time, there would BE no American Idol, or any OTHER competition; Rodney is as entitled to HIS opinion as anyone else. Over the years, Rodney has given Diana her ‘props’ when she deserved them, just like anyone ELSE he’s reviewed.
Dawn, I’ll also second Deirdre’s welcoming mat and ask you to join in more often! The best way to become one of the ‘gang’ is to post and repost (and no, LOL, i don’t mean the same entry—the mushblog will do THAT for you anyway sometimes!) and riposte as well! Sometimes we have wars of words, sometimes we are inundated with the children… but it’s rarely boring when people are interacting!!!
see you guys later!

rabbit, I think Diana was 17 during season 3 which would make her 20/21 now. She doesn’t really look that young. I can completely understand however. During Idol she was called on her youthfulness repeatedly. I think she’s stuck herself in the ‘I need to look older’ trap. She’d do well to let her hair look a little more natural and change the make-up. Not less makeup necessarily, but a more youthful look.

Condolences to the Yamin family — El gave a great deal of credit to his Mom for her support of his efforts.
Doxology Schmoxology —- I think Doxology would do better to ask AI why the show didn’t give credit where ‘due’ — and i’d have to hear the performance side-by-side (or better yet, literally at the same time) to determine if they have any complaint at all. DC has little control over what the directors/editors/producers decide to air! AND they have to prove that DC actually HEARD their version (although i’d guess he DID hear it) enough to mimic it “note for note” — there is a lot of room for argument that he just happened to arrange it similar to theirs (NOT that i think he did, ‘cuz i think DC IS good at mimicing others, but haven’t seen originality from him YET in arrangements)… and what exactly are they going to “get” from him in “compensation” … has it hurt them? they have to be able to prove some sort of harm, i believe. where’s my lawyer friend out there…. did they have copyright on the ARRANGEMENT of Eleanor Rigby that they came up with? were they harmed by Cook performing it? Can they prove that he KNEW it was a previously done arrangement and by whom the arrangement was done?
legalese…

Doxology: maybe Ryan should get on and say something to the effect of “A few weeks ago David Cook sang a song that used an arrangement from a bunch whiny cry babies. We apologize, it will never happen again.” Doxology, if this is all you have for your 15 minutes of fame you’re pathetic, maybe try to come up with a original hit on your own. Cry babies.

As someone that reads this blog AND a fan of Diana’s, I agree that she needs to lay off the make-up. This one style she had for the Braves did her no favors, as if I’ve seen her look a lot more youthful in other recent pictures. She’s actually a very pretty girl if you’ve seen her in person and a very nice one at that.
Poor Elliott. I know how close he was to his mom so that’s sad.

Diana is a wonderful singer and she looked nice, I just think she looked too old with too much makeup and an unflattering hairstyle. Diana or Diana’s stylist need to take heed and make corrections.
I don’t think she looked heavy at. all. She lost a ton of weight after Idol and doesn’t appear to have regained any of it.

RC - good to see you ol’ chap! you doing ok? I think we need to cut the braves a LITTLE bit of slack … virtually new team, they send them to DC to deal with the hoopla of opening the new stadium, THEN have them drive all the way to the airport — of COURSE the furthest away, THEN fly home, THEN get home to sleep, THEN get up and get to warmup/practice/etc. THEN cope with opening night at the Ted on a freaking MONDAY night…. in semi-yucky weather… I think holding on for 12 innings and while giving up some stuff, ALSO getting it back once and ALMOST twice…. and a lot of young players, i think they will come along well, it may take a couple of games more to “gel”
i’m not despairing yet…. 160 freaking games to go yet!!!
JT - good point about handling Doxology, LOL!!! Like your style, there!!! But then, i usually like your style so….

D. my main hang-up is that it isn’t their song to begin with. Fine, give them credit, but do they want some kind of award? The prize goes to the Beatles for writing the song in the first place. They’ve had a few weeks to milk the marketing machine, now get off the Beatles coat tails.

JT…I would argue that it wasn’t the song the judges and the audience were so enthralled with…it was the arrangement….and if I had written that particular arrangement, I would make damned sure the rest of the world knew it.
That doesn’t take away from how well the song was performed….David did a great job.

and Skip we’re praying for you to feel better! I agree, we NEED you … and only could wish that we could hear you more often! Feel better soon!
And about Doxology — I guess D, what bothers me is their whiney attitude about it — how about contact AI, say something like “Look, not sure if you knew it but the arrangement that Mr. Cook used was actually our arrangement — could you guys slip in a credit for that as you have for others? We know it’s a little late, but it would mean a lot to us!” … But according to all reports their complaining and whining…. heck they’ll probably sue someone, tho not sure who… and it leaves me not giving a pea-turkey-whoop-di-doo whether they get credit or not!

Happy Rainy Tuesday to all you bloggers…. Welcome aboard DawnH. Nice to have you and your comments.
Thanks for the info on Diana RH. A real good article. I will have to agree with several bloggers about the makeup and hair style. She needs to look more her age that some other age (say mine, but I’m not gonna give it out). I have met Diana in person and she is a lovely young person with alot of maturity for her age. I think she will go far in Country Music since John Rich is behind her.
D: Thank you for the information on Ms. Yamin. May God be with Elliot and his family in this time of need, and may God’s strenght get them through this very difficult time.
Can’t wait for tonight’s show. Want to see if any of the choices I stated in an earlier post will be done tonight.
So Diana thinks that Michael should be an American. Does she not realize that Carly is also not an American? She didn’t mention anything about her being from Ireland.

Weightwise, Diana is fine. She is definitely down from her “Idol” days. I suspect she may just be cautious because I’m media and she may not feel comfortable around journalists in general, which is understandable. It may have zero to do with me. I can’t expect everybody to be George Huff or Chris Sligh. But look on the bright side—she wasn’t llike Paris Bennett!

Nah, greg, don’t be crushed. You just weren’t thinking is all, lol!
One comment about Diana’s wardrobe — she’s gotten really big lately it seems into these tops that are high around the neck with a big hole from the top of the boobs up her chest area…. i find the style actually MOST unbecoming to about 99% of the women who wear it. It smooshes the boobs, makes the cleavage look funny, and shortens the neck appearance… i think the look only works on tall, thin, almost boobless women, like models, LOL. THEY don’t have to worry about smooshed boobs or shortened necks… not just Diana, everyone i’ve seen with that style just looks…. frumpy-trying-to-be-sexy.
just sayin’

Diana often seems to wear shirts that allow her cleavage room to roam. I say if you’ve got it flaunt it. ha ha
She’s an attractive girl and usually dresses quite young and hip. Her outfit was fine, it was the hair and excessive makeup that weren’t quite right.

Lenny: You are correct. I had much rather be busy than sitting idle. That’s one reason I like HR. Keeps me on my toes. I LOVE to read. Always have a book with me, Nora Roberts,, D Steele, Fern Michaels, Sandra Brown, JD Robb (Nora Roberts),Dorothy Garlock, just to name a few.Usually average two books a week even with working 40 hrs week. I got a good supply before hospital (about 30) to read. Will keep me busy for a few weeks. You can only watch so much TV during the day. Soaps and talk shows get boring. Need the excitement of night time TV.

Olive, thanks for stopping in with a comment! I have to disagree about her blouse under the jacket… but i’ve already said, i find that style to be less than becoming on most anyone, lol! but i absolutely agree about the hair and makeup … it’s almost like she’s still using a stylist from her mom’s age group, rather than someone a little more modern… and in my opinion, more than a touch of makeup is too much, especially on these young, fresh-skinned young ladies!!! They don’t need makeup, but if they wear too much of it too long, they WILL need it when they’re older!!! let your skin breath, girls!!! you will not be sorry when you get older (and yes, i’m sorry to say, you WILL get older no matter what you think right now, LOL!)

Do you like Historical Fiction? and a touch of fantasy/magic? There is an author, Diana Gabaldon, who wrote a series that is quite entertaining… combination of modern and historical, irish/celtic/welsh and usa
i highly recommend them!
if you want to look up anything about books, there’s this most incredible site Fantastic Fiction that is kept very up-to-date and covers almost any fiction author you can THINK of!!!

Harmony: Yes, for the first two seasons I refused to watch it, then I got hooked last year. Heck I was so hooked that I watched the BBC and American versions of Kitchen Nightmare. Is it one that you watch?
Willie: welcome back.

I do like some of those. Nora Roberts is good with books of that nature. Infact, I have just started the first book of 7 in a magical/fantasy series. So far the 1st is really good. Thanks for website. I will try it out.

Willie! we thought you had abandoned us! welcome ‘home’ LOL
sorry to disappoint you, tho, BlkShep sometimes goes days without posting then will post a lot for a couple of days… doubt you can take any “credit” for that!
Urgh, you guys, i can’t watch Hell’s Kitchen, that guy makes Simon look like a p*** cat!!!! LOL!
Menana, I love Nora Roberts too, she’s so much fun and a quick read. Also the more “mysterious/thriller” Sandra Brown books, as opposed to the “romance” ones.
If you never read them before, you should go back and read The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment by Mary Stewart; written in the 1980s+, a totally different treatment of the Merlin stories, but fairly timeless…. i read Hollow Hills just the other day for the umpteenth time and found it just as enjoyable as the first, maybe more so, since i didn’t miss so many little things while reading.
anywho, glad you’re home, and hope you continue to improve how you feel quickly enough to get some “fun” time from your medical leave!!!
love it when the boss gets on a conference call…for the duration i’m almost ‘fancy free’!!

Harmony, yep, exactly. It will be interesting to see if any of the AIers take the challenge and REALLY get creative while remaining “country” overall. I can see Michael handling it, Kristy Lee may be getting a break (but maybe not), Brooke should be just fine; Carly can actually do country pretty well because a lot of the Irish music has similar sounds/roots. Archuletta to me is a question mark. If he glosses it up and makes it TOO pop, he may not find himself quite so POPular. Cook’s choice will be interesting no matter WHAT he chooses…it’s what he will find by way of interpretations/arrangements out there on the ‘net that will tell…. syesha, rami, jason, … i’m just having trouble finding real interest, and that’s a shame because all showed some potential before…
guess we’ll see, right?
was it tonight or tomorrow that the Clark Brothers are appearing/playing on the show? Tonight helping with country style backup???

There’s a new thread up where Rodney is talking about a possible spoiler. I’ll keep looking.

Should be interesting, I’m just so used to Dolly singing these songs that I can’t see anyone else doing them, no one else has her unique voice. I do like Whitney singing ( I will always love you) though.

Diana looks so much prettier and younger with less make-up, like in this video. http://www.veoh.com/videos/v6567950BDZcmxGf She should have worn less make-up for the Braves game.

BTW you guys need glasses cuz you’re blind! Diana’s make-up is light not heavy. Look at this pic: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2231918340086879455tGGeBJ and look at the pics above. See the difference?
