4/3: Ramiele Malubay’s exit interview
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ramiele Malubay’s exit press conference was a snooze, as expected.
The second Filipino-American Idol finalist (after Jasmine Trias) was packed full of cliches but not much insight. My attempt to glean thoughts about why she chose Carrie Underwood’s breakthrough song (Heart’s “Alone”) two weeks ago elicited this:
I watched her performance. I just thought that the first week I had [which was often noted as her best], I was trying to bring that back… my whole goal was bring back the first week.
So her logic doesn’t compute. Take a song that Carly Smithson already did during Hollywood week, that Gina Glocksen performed reasonably well a year earlier and Carrie mastered in 2005 and somehow that would help bring back whatever magic Ramiele thought she had weeks ago? Heck, I don’t even remember what she did the first week that was so good.
When someone asked if there was a song she wanted to sing that didn’t get cleared, she chose “A House Is Not a Home,” a classic that Tamyra Gray already worked over in season one and was arguably her best performance that year. Ramiele also did the overdone Phil Collins hit “Against All Odds.” This simply tells me Ramiele learned her musical repertoire from watching previous seasons of “Idol.”
And when some idiot journalist asked the stupid “What advice would you give to aspiring singers?” question, she gave the classic cliched answer: “Be yourself.” In Ramiele’s case, that didn’t exactly work, did it?
She also plans to room with Danny Noriega once the tour is over cos they are such BFFs!
She managed her stress by crying every week when contestants were eliminated. And she cried a lot last night, too.
In other “Idol” news:
Chris Sligh on ew.com gives a detailed rundown of what happens after you get eliminated, including the farewell dinner at the local Italian restaurant, the press interviews and such. His favorites from Dolly Parton week: Syesha, David A., Carly and Michael. Most foregtable: Kristy Lee and Ramiele. In between: Brooke, Jason A. and David C.
Billboard.com reports that the rankings for the Idols singles from last week popped up. Archuleta’s “Smoky Mountain Memories” ranked No. 7, Michael Johns’ “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right” came in at No. 12, David Cook’s “Little Sparrow” at No. 14, Jason Castro’s “Travelin’ Thru” at No. 20, Carly’s “Here You Come Again” at No. 30 and Brooke’s “Jolene” at No. 47.
Next week’s musical theme is inspirational songs for “Idol Gives Back.” Grab the dramamine stat!
The Los Angeles Times was in the audience last night and reported that Brooke White was in convulsions of tears during break when she found out she was in the bottom three and had to be consoled by virtually the entire production staff.
And here’s EW.com’s extended take on what happened on Tuesday in the theater.. Apparently, they taped an advance for some future results episode of Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks doing “No Air.” Cool!
In this Good Morning America report uploaded by MJ’s big blog, David Archuleta’s friends denied that his dad was any worse than other dad. And that David is shy and humble, even off camera. His vocal coach talked about his paralyzed vocal cord. He never fully recovered but gave his voice more texture.
- Finally, Gawker noted on TMZ.com the insensitive comments made about Claudette Yamin, Elliott’s dead mom and how they put up a poll asking if people thought it should be pulled. 78% did. I won’t bother repeating the offensive comment, which also mocks Taylor Hicks. (TMZ makes fun of Taylor Hicks constantly.) Judge for yourself.

I don’t know why the judges continue to say that this is most talented top ten. This season is no where close to season 5. Here are some of the matchups.
Taylor-David A. Kat Mac-Carly Daughtry-David C. Kellie PIckler-Brooke white. Elliot-Michael Johns
I won’t even go into the bottom five where season five was the clear winner.

TMZ’s comment was out of line. They have ZERO respect for anyone.
I forgot Lil Archie had a paralyzed vocal chord. I really didn’t watch the beginning of this season. I didn’t really get into it until top 12. I was so bored from last year that I almost didn’t bother watching at all.
I feel for David Cook though. I know what is like having a very sick family member, the stress will get to you.

10 points to Flats!
ACE, I think you’ve pointed out before that you disagreed with the most talented top ten statements. However, you don’t get people to watch your show by saying “we have a real mediocre bunch this year.” I don’t believe this group is mediocre, but they did say last year that 2007 was the most talented group. Unless they meant the most talented at being mediocre then I’ll chalk it all up to being a marketing ploy. Only losers chant “we’re number two, we’re number two!”
Shay H, welcome to the blog!

Deirdre -
I usually find your comments to be extraordinarily thoughtful, creative and insightful. However, your persistant personal attacks against “Boy King” seem surprisingly unkind and unfair.
We get it already … you (and several other posters) don’t like this kid. But, why must you continue to attack him personally?
There is no question that he has real talent. There is a purity and richness to his voice that is very rare … especially for a teenage boy.
More importantly, he seems like a genuinely nice guy.
At home, he is a straight A student (as you know, he is currently taking classes every morning while the other finalists are researching, relaxing or rehearsing). He is very involved in community activities. He is adored by his friends … and by everyone in his community.
On the show, he is very respectful of the judges. When he botched his first Beatles song, he owned his mistake. He has taken responsibility for all of his song choices … good or bad.
Despite his tendancy to giggle a bit too much (nervousness, I suspect), David seems very mature, honest and spiritual for someone his age. Life experiences and continued training and performing will make him even stronger … and ultimately even more successful.
I recognize that not everyone might like his style or appreciate his life story. I just don’t understand why folks feel the need to demonize a talented, nice kid. Just way too much hate for someone who has demonstrated so much goodness.

So I see that someone has been blowing the ol butt trumpet on the blog today. No worries it happens to all of us.
I like Popeye’s strategy. There are a lot of people that jump in with a post that deliberately attacks a person by saying cruel things, and the post is usually ignored. Then we have Willy that request that the post be kept short. Then Willy sits back and waits to see who will take the bait. Willy just throws his worm in the water and the fish start biting.
Willy is a pro.

I’m not trying to elbow in; because I know only Deirdre can answer a question directed to her. However, you raise a point that perhaps does need to be discussed. You will find that every contestant has been attacked on the blog at one time or another. That may not be right, but if you are going to take the moral high ground, then you need to truly take that high road, not cherry pick which contestants can and cannot be attacked. Just because you like David A. it doesn’t make it more or less acceptable to attack Jason.
I personally believe that if you want to be the next American Idol you need to accept that you are voluntarily putting yourself in a position where you can and will be ridiculed. Every one of the top 12 has been subject to insults by various people, and it is going to continue. If you don’t want the personal attacks don’t try out for AI, because if you aren’t laughed at by the entire nation during the auditions you will probably be laughed at by someone once you make the top 24.

While I agree with you that it silly for an Australian, who once lived in ATL but now lives in CA to show his home as GA, what really irks me is that he shows it as Buckhead, GA. Ryan should know that Buckhead is in the City of Atlanta, unlike Dunwoody. What he may not know is that Buckhead, GA is east of ATL toward Augusta. It has 205 people. Can you get that changed?

Finally back from the doctors. It is so nice to have friends without having actually meeting them. I have read all the posts that have been added since my last one and am amazed at some of them, almost to the point that I have had a good needed laugh. Willie, Flats and some of the others just crack me up.
Shay H: My occupation is HR Manager. Love it, but it can be very stressful. Dittos on the 2 year old. Having raise three (38, 43, 44), you certainly have your hands full.
You know, everyone has a right to their opinion and should not be criticized for voicing it. Not everyone has to like the same things, as is the case with David A. Yes, he is a very talented 17 year old, but he does have alot of growing up to do. IMO, he has not had the chance to be a child/teenager at all, and that is a shame. It really makes me wonder just how much of this HE really wants and how much dad wants it. I get the feeling that dad is trying to live his life over through David. Also feel that he doesn’t want to disappoint dear ole dad and then have to reap the repercussions.
I really hope that Brooke will not let the stress get to her, as well as the others, especially DC with a ill brother to worry about. Alot of young stars can not handle the stardom and in order to deal with it, they will try drugs/alcohol to try to cope and fit in. And, as we all know, that happens far more than it should.
I also heard that next week will be inspirational. Hopefully, it will be a good week and none of the contestants will have a meltdown or end up at the emergency room again.

Everyone is going to have their favorites and their least favorites, and we all have the right to voice our opinions. I really don’t think she was trying to “demonize” him. Even most of his critics (me included) have stated that he is a talented, and nice kid.
Does anyone know what caused the vocal chord paralysis? My money is on too much strain placed on it at such a young age. My teacher was always warning us about that and limited the amount of time kids rehearsed until they were 16.

We females don’t have to worry about getting injured below the belt. Maybe she is trying to tell you she wants to be an only child and I am sure she is the apple of you eye. You may be correct in that DA’s friends are not going to bad mouth his dad, but you know, unless you live in the same household, you don’t know what goes on. vouyer…thanks for your compliment and I’m sorry you are misunderstanding my point. I have never failed to mention how talented David Archuleta is. I have always complimented his voice and his pleasant personality. I have REPEATEDLY said that if he had waited a couple of years, I think he could have been spectacular. Now, he’s too young(BTW, that’s a criticism I’ve had of the show from the very beginning.) My use of the term ‘Boy King’ was a condemnation of the media hype that is following this poor kid around.
David, IMO, is not ready for all this. That’s easy to see when you watch him carefully on tv. He doesn’t know what to say, he doesn’t know how to handle the adulation around him. He may want to win, he may want whatever Idol can bring to him but wanting it doesn’t mean he’s ready for it.
The media and Idol are turning this kid into a 17 year old freak! He’s NOT ready. He won’t be able to handle it and he’ll either become the male version of Britney or, one day, someone will find him huddled in a corner wishing everyone would just go away!
This boy was declared the winner by the media before the top 12 was even chosen. How on earth does an immature 17 year old deal with that?
Sweet David is NOT the problem. The hype around him is!

WE: You’re welcome.
D: You have a very good insight on DA. You do your profession proud. I think everyone who reads your analogy about him will have to agree. As I have stated before, just how much does HE want the fame and all that comes with it? And can he really handle it? At 17, I’m not sure he even knows what he wants out of life. Oh no doubt that he wants to sing. That is a given, but if he were to analysis himself, would he reach the same conclusion? He has alot going for him, but at the same time, one has to wonder if he is really ready to step into the adults real world. In my estimation, right now at his age I don’t see him fitting that image. That is a heavy load for any 17 year old. He has the potential to really go far in the music industry and I would hate to see him stumble and fail by not comprehending and understanding the ramifications that come with fame. Before anyone jumps me, I am merely stating that I would hope he has the understanding and knowledge that is needed for anyone in the entertainment business. It is a big ugly world and people can be vicious. I just want him to enjoy his youth and live life to the fullest and be able to handle all the curve balls that will come his way. And no doubt they will come.I am in no way putting David down. Just don’t want to see him crushed.
Well, you all have probably heard enough from me tonight, so I may noy post anymore tonight, but then again………. Nite All.

By the way, David A. is not necessarily my favorite finalist. I’m very impressed with both Davids and would like to see the two of them at the end with Michael and Carly. Morning mushblogians.
vouyer…again, thanks for the compliments. Human nature, being what it is, the day David A was declared the winner of American Idol by the media, many people started to campaign against it. This blog is no exception and we are definitely human(most of us anyway.) There are some really good singers this season. We heard, for awhile, virtually NOTHING about them. Was that any fairer to them than the occasional diatribe launched at Archie?
This boy is exceptionally talented and way too young emotionally to be going through this. However, in order for the other singers to get the attention they so richly deserve, many of us on this blog and other blogs have felt the need to do some bashing. It’s a strategy.
Now, David Cook, Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, and even Brooke White can stand up there with Archie as competitors rather than declared losers. It’s the way the business works and it’s also a perfect example of why I think that child shouldn’t be there….yet.
And how are the rest of you lovely people this morning?

It is hard for me to have the same feelings for him in this situation. Something is a bit “off-putting” about him at this stage in his life. I guess it is the lack of maturity and ability to sell a song, even though he sings it with great expression. He does have a lovely voice, but I believe he would have been served better by coming out for Idol in a couple of years. Side by side, comparing the two Davids, there is all the difference in the world in their depth of understanding of what they are singing. Now, that’s me and my soapbox speech for this morning! Just IMO, however. I know lots of folks who disagree.

I practically live on a soap box, harrietth! :-)
I’m getting my blogging in early as this is my day off. It hasn’t been a fun week at my house so I’m looking forward to it!

have a good day off Deirdre; i’m probably going to be under the gun at work a lot today, so won’t be posting too much, tho i will try to check in occasionally.
harrietth, i’m in agreement — i said way back in the beginning that i felt archie needed a couple of years just to BE a teenager without the pressure of competition; he can keep on singing, just let the contests go by for a while, then with some maturity — and some fun under his belt! — go back to it IF he wants to!
he’ll not hurt for a career; unlike a lot of these contestants, archie HAS the voice and talent and skills to move into the industry and do very well. unless.
well let’s put it this way — what contest does he enter after AI? What ‘next level’ of competition can he take it to? he’s been competing since he was a little kid … what happens where there IS no competition any more? He’s way too good for America’s Got Talent. His style and genre of songs are not compatable for “open mic nights” at a bar. He’s good, yes. But he needs some time to just “grow up” like a normal kid!
that’s my opinion and i’m sticking to it!
kicks the soapbox back under the blog and sits down

Good Friday Morning to All!!!
D: Your comments are right on the money concerning DA. I think that he hasn’t had the time to grow and mature as a 17 year should. He has been shoved into the adult world and I honestly feel that he is not able to handle it at this time. Given a couple more years, he would have the maturity that is needed. I don’t think that he would ever sway from his upbringing and let the stress get him into drugs/alcohol in order to deal with his fame. Whether he is ready or not, we all have to face facts that the kid is famous. I just don’t want to see him get trampled and end up like so many young stars have. He has plenty of time to make it on his own.

good morning to all my friends!!!!David A. will not make it in the music industry at any level!!His dad ruined his life wit many years of abuse….BRAVES,1-3!!!GONNA BE A LONG LONG YEAR!Things looked good with the new guy throwing a no-hitter thru 2 iniings, then got bombed!!!

Good morning all. Looks like the messages have cooled off a little this morning. Guess Neg and WE haven’t shown up. I don’t think DA will every be that successful in the music industry either. Not because he isn’t talented, but because he just doesn’t have the stomach for it, or the personality.
Flats - the Braves lost again?! Jeez… I get my mom season tickets for weekend games only (at home)for Christmas. You’re right, it is going to be another long, long season. She loves her Braves, and we are there every weekend, rain or shine and when it is 110 in the shade. Least they can do is win a couple!

My take on David A. is he could be a great singer along the lines of Josh Groban. He is definitely no “pop” singer. The problem he has is, how much room is there for another Josh Groban? Hopefully he is able to find his niche and make a career. He could actually win AI due to votes of every teenybopper in America, but that would be a huge disaster for him, I think. Trying to sing music that 19 Entertainment would choose for him (I am just basing this on all the past winners) would not work for him and he would disappear a la Taylor Hicks.
David Cook is another who would suffer from winning this thing. He is incredible, and could be huge, but needs to be able to do the music he wants. Chris Doughtry benefitted from losing, and David C. would too.
Personally, from a career standpoint, I think Michael,Carly or Brooke should win. They are who would truly have a career from being under 19 Entertainment’s wing. I am not sure they are strong enough performers to make it on their own.
From a personal standpoint, I think David C., Michael, Carly and David A. are the best all around singers and/or performers. None of the others (IMHO) really stand up to them from a consistent standard of good weeks.
And Brooke…good voice, but boy does she need a performance coach!!!

We were discussing how Diana DeGarmo did not have a flattering look and looked too old at the Braves opener. I came across these recent pictures though and have to say, she looks great, very pretty and youthful. Why could she not have done herself up like this for the Braves game? Simple is always better.

Christina, thanks for the pix of Diana. She really looks alot better in those than she did in the Braves pix. Also, thanks to IOE for sharing the website to get a report on past winners and contestants. Its always refreshing to know what and where they are doing and going. Chatter seems alittle slow today. Guess not much needs to be said. Oh well, there is always tomorrow. Everyone is saving up for next week’s show and then the posts will fly.

Those pics of Diana were great. She is one of those people that look better the less is done to her.
That report card was interesting. I hope Kelly comes back and kicks butt. I actually liked a lot of “My December”, but it wasn’t great and didn’t blow me away like “Breakaway” did.
I have a question: Of all the Idol alumni, whose CD’s did you buy? I have all of Kelly’s, and Carrie’s and Bo’s first CD.

Flats - Braves are playing the Mets tonight. Mom and I will be watching from home tonight, and we’ll be at the stadium this weekend! Guess it will still be the Mets…
Shay H - I have to say, personally, I haven’t actually bought a CD of any Idol alumni. I’ve “shared” a Dougherty and Carrie CD with my sister. I might be tempted to buy a Michael CD if it comes with a pack of cigarettes and fresh undies!

LOL ShayH!!!! I’ve got Daughtry’s and Bucky’s (bucky’s i won and it’s a fun cd); i probably will eventually buy an Underwood—i enjoy her enough to do that, but country isn’t normally my thing. If i had the money to just spend, i’d probably support Elliott Yamin by buying his, I liked the E-Train…
Back to something D said recently — i also think that the AI contestants should be “graduated from high school” if under 18, or at least 18 otherwise; and that the age cutoff should be December 31 of the year of hte audition — in other words, you could be 17 in august when they hold the Xcity auditions, but will turn 18 before the end of the year and before the beginning of the new AI season. You might still get a FEW high school seniors that way, but for the MOST part, contestants would have finished high school. I just think 16-17 is way way way too young; kids need a chance to BE kids.
just my opinion.

No problem for the pictures. It’s interesting what differences in make-up and hairstyle can do for a person. Dians’s such a cute girl and I hope she does well.
flats, glad I could be of service? Ha.
I don’t think that Idol report card is fair. Why did they not include Kelly’s second album? However, I still think Kelly is the most talented contestant to come from Idol and be a success in the industry. Carrie has a good voice but leaves me cold. She still seems so robotic. Kelly, on the other hand, has been stretching herself and doing good work (even if her second album hasn’t sold as much).

Shay H: I purchased Clay Aiken’s Christmas CD and it was absolutely great. He sung “O Holy Night” and it blew me away. That would be a good one for the holidays. Also, I have one of Carrie Underwood’s.
Linny: I have said before that the contestants need to be out of school and at least 18. You would think that AI would make those two stipulations requirements. Don’t know why they wouldn’t require that.
My keyboard is messing up so if this post more than once, I apologize. It’s not me causing it. I can type a few words and it will stop and the little hourglass will pop up then just disappear. Don’t know what the heck is going on here. Here goes…..

Harm, maybe you too could use a little tweaking on the computer - 2 things i recommend - (1) disk cleanup weekly, and (2) check your “virtual RAM” .. you can manipulate the settings and it allows your computer to ‘find’ more space with which to ‘cache’ things and thus process them — it’s not real memory, it’s sort of forced space to allow the processing to occur — not being a geek i can’t explain it scientifically, all i know is it helps!

google “virtual memory” or “virtual RAM” … there’s a way to increase the number that’s harmless to the computer if you follow instructions, but it allows the computer to process more efficiently that as sold settings.

It’s definitely a children’s movie but very sweet….silly and fun. Jodie Foster overacts in a good way. For the kids…. and Abigail Breslin looks very good and a lot older than her Little Miss Sunshine days.
If you saw 300, the father is played by Gerard Butler.

Please give ramiele malubay a rest. I pity the poor kid, too much bashing & dissing. Too harsh comments are not fair & are hard to digest. You dont know her far too well so you make assumptions that she is dumb or something. It was her 1st press conference, probably why she was not in her best element, answering questions wise. What she meant by her answer on why she chose alone is that she was fully aware of the risk she had to take taking on the song because she watched carrie’s performance but she was focused on her goal w/c is to sing a big song that may bring out what the judges got from her from her first performance w/c gained high praises from the 3 judges. Have a heart please, she’s probably way younger than you & she admittedly has more maturing to do, so it’s understandable you’re not on the same wavelenght.
