4/8: Top 8 performance show

jason castro top 8.jpg

Overall, I was expecting lots of Celine Dion/Bette Midler/Michael Bolton crap. But on the most part, the top 8 picked quality songs and the performance levels were pretty good. There is not a really weak Sanjaya/Haley type character this year. And we are forever grateful.

That doesn’t mean some folks aren’t dancing on the edge of elimination. I’d say the bottom three are going to be Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado and for the first time, Michael Johns. (We need a surprise!) And who will go home? Syesha, sadly enough. But Carly isn’t in the clear. This wasn’t a great David Cook performance but I think he has enough residual goodwill to avoid the bottom three. And Kristy Lee Cook is picking good songs for herself and staying just out of trouble. It’s a perfect time for her to pick up the pace while others struggle to define themselves.

Here are my rankings: 1- Jason Castro 2- Kristy Lee Cook (who woulda thunk it that I would ever rank her this high?) 3- David Archuleta 4- Brooke White 5- Michael Johns 6- Syesha Mercado 7- David Cook 8- Carly Smithson

I did my rankings before reading anybody else’s comments or checking dialidol.com. Let me do that now. (If dialidol is accurate, I have the bottom three correct though only the top 3 are safe—the same three I ranked at the top.)

And somebody lifted Paula’s pups a bit much. They must have been screaming in pain!

First up: Michael Johns (“Dream On” Aerosmith) He used this song as a template for his own life. “Dreams come true and it’s happening to me,” he said. As noted in the last blog entry, the pure rock thang doesn’t work quite as well for him as the bluesy-soul stuff. This song has some bluesy elements to it so it’s actually not a bad fit but he isn’t quite as edgy or dirty as Steven Tyler to truly pull it off from a performance standpoint. Vocally, he hit it, even those high notes. Randy: “I thought it was a pretty good song choice but it had some pitch problems but I still don’t buy you as an Aerosmith. That’s not the singer you are.” Paula: “I couldn’t disagree more. It was a perfect song for you to pick. You sound as good as you look. The high notes, I think my chihuahuas are going to join you on stage.” Simon: “It was a very good performance. What I’m slightly with Randy. I don’t like it when you do an impersonation of a rock star. I prefer the more blues/R&B of last week… it was a little bit wannabe-ish.” B-plus/A-minus. (I tended to agree with Simon on this one.)

Syesha Mercardo (“I Believe” Fantasia) Oh, boy. Talk about risky. Taking on Fantasia’s signature “Idol” winning song. I’ve seen Fantasia do this live and it’s a sight to behold. I’ve gotten those dreaded Paula goosebumps. I can’t imagine Syesha could match it no matter how much I like her. She does a fine job but it may come to connecting with the audience. And like being compared to Whitney last week, being compared to Fantasia is a losing proposition. She simply doesn’t connect to that emotional level. Randy; “You took another tiger this week. Fantasia is one of the best singers. She has that special connection I didn’t find with you… she sang the living daylights out of it.” Paula: “She has her own unique style. You flipped it and made it your own. This was one of your most shining nights.” Simon: “To be fair, there’s going to be a comparison.. technically, I thought you sang it very well. However, what it lacked was that big wave of emotion when Fantasia sang it. I want to find out what you are all about.” B-plus/A-minus

Jason Castro (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Israel Kamakawiwo’ole) - This is my favorite version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” You might remember it from the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore film “50 First Dates.” Jason pretty much apes that version with the ukelele but it’s still lovely, his best performance in weeks. Great song choice. And the crowd is no longer waving their arms out of sync, thank goodness. Randy: “Dude. Jason Castro is back in the hunt. That was the hottest tonight.” Paula: “You have the most definitive sound… it was the perfect song and I loved that version.” Simon: “Fantastic!” A/A-minus

Kristy Lee Cook (“Anyway” Martina McBride) A smart song choice but can she surpass Martina? That won’t be easy. Our perennial bottom three singer lacks the purity of Martina’s voice but she puts her heart into it. The chorus is a nice touch. I actually liked it a lot. She might have sung herself into the safety zone. This was my favorite Kristy Lee Cook performance so far. Randy; “I loved that. That was really good.” Paula: ” You outdid yourself tonight. It was your best by far.” Simon: “Randy made a point. With a choice this broad, you have an opportunity to show who you really are. And I thought you were very very good indeed.” A-minus.

David Cook (“Innocent” Our Lady Peace). The spoilers got it right. He’s taking a risk by offering up a song that hardly anybody knows. (I know a handful of Our Lady Peace songs. This was not one of them. I see that it barely scraped the top 20 on the modern rock charts in 2003.) I thought he was very pitchy early on but the ending was better, with the inked “give back” on his left hand. It felt a bit stagey and for once, he didn’t feel quite so organic. I wasn’t thrilled. Randy: “I’m not sure this was one of your strongest weeks. I didn’t quite get it tonight.” Paula: “You are so well defined as being the whole package. You are it and I believe in you.” Simon: “I didn’t like this performance very much. I thought it was a teensy bit pompous. The whole white jacket… we say this week after week, originality, choice of song..” B

Carly Smithson (“The Show Must Go On” Queen) Speaking of pompous, this song is deeply indulgent. We want her to be warmer and this does nothing of the sort. She has a weakness for this theatrical pomp. And she ended it kind of abruptly, allowing the chorus to finish it. Randy: “Just okay for me. Disconnected for me.” Paula: “There’s something I’m going to agree with. Your voice as always is totally pretty perfect. I didn’t feel the connection. I didn’t feel engaged with you.” Simon: “You look good. I thought it was an unusual choice of song. I’m being honest. I think you oversang it to the point you did lose control of the song towards the end. It came over strangely an angry performance, which felt out of kilter with the night. You might be in a bit of trouble after tonight.” B-minus (She said she lost focus when she looked at Simon. That’s not good.)

David Archuleta (“Angels” Robbie Williams) This is a solid song choice for David. It’s not terribly well known here in the United State, though, where it peaked at No. 41 in 1997 (but No. 4 in the U.K.) He’s quite at ease behind a piano. Very Josh Grobin. Treacly? Hell, yeah! But what do you expect from David Archuleta? Randy: “That’s the David Archuleta I love. Crazy hot. Loved it!” Paula: “Fantastic.” Simon: “Best song choice of the night so far. It was never a hit here but one of the best pop songs written… it was a bit nasally… I’m nit picking. You will sail into the next round.” A-minus

Pimp spot: Brooke White (“You Got a Friend” James Taylor) This may be the first time Brooke has gotten the pimp spot and that’s always a good thing, especially at this stage. And this is a brilliant song choice. Given her Carly Simon, early 70s singer-songwriter vibe, picking a Carole King piece is perfect. She decided to ditch the piano and just stand there. Her voice sounds kind of rough tonight in the first verse. But she’s so sincere and captures that “connection with the audience” feel that Carly missed this week. Brooke was born like 35 years too late! Randy: “For me, I don’t think it was your best performance. It was okay.” Paula: “My sister played it over and over again. And I think it’s a perfect way to close the evening.” Simon: “It was a pleasant walk in the park. It was nice. Was it original? No. Was it pleasant? Yes. Thank you.:” A-minus/B-plus

I’m not normally a Kristy Lee fan, but I have to say that tonight she gave an extremely good performance. Country music is truly her niche, and she seems to have a good personality/stage presence when she lets it shine through.

What a weird night! I wasn’t happy with anyone much. Most were pretty boring.

One: David Archuleta…..y’all have no idea how much I hate it but he was the best tonight. He did a wonderful job with Angels.

Two: Michael Johns. When he started singing I thought, no not so good this week…but once the night was over, he was better than most.

Three: Kristy…good for her…a nice solid performance.

Four: Syesha…the girl has the voice but I agree with Randy and Simon…there was no emotional punch

Five:David Cook…I thought it was self-indulgent crap…and he didn’t sing it very well either.

Six: Brooke…boring boring boring!

Seven: Carly…oh good grief, this is supposed to be inspirational…what is she trying to inspire me to do? Kill someone???? The faces…the over singing…..it was a mess.

Eight: Jason. I TOTALLY disagree with the judges on this one. Israel’s version of the song is wistful, childlike, emotional, sad, and hopeful all wrapped into one. Jason’s version was flat and boring.

JT your hometown girl did you proud tonight.

By Mike S

THis was nowhere near the best night of the season, but there were some decent performances, and one breakout performance.

  1. Kristy Lee Cook - Anyway - This was by far her best performance of the year, and I will go on record right now and officially proclaim Kristy the dark horse of this competition. Every season a performer has started out slowly and improved every single week (carrie Underwood and Elliot Yamin are prime examples)— Kristy is quickly becoming that performer this year. Also, it no longer matters when Kristy leaves, the last 3 weeks have made her the next AI Country Star. Where she finishes is a moot point, Kristy Lee Cook will take the country world by storm.

  2. Michael Johns - Dream On - Not sure what Randy was smoking tonight, because this was just flat out fantastic. Michael didn’t make any changes to the original, but he didn’t have too, he flat sang the hell out of this song.’

  3. Brooke White - You’ve Got A Friend - Some may have her a lot lower, but for me this was nothing short of breathtaking. She wrung every bit of emotion out of this song that she possible could. Excellent.

  4. David Archuletta - Angels - OK I have to give Monchichi his props, where the last couple weeks have just been mailed in David A ballad performances, this one was awesome. Much the same as Brooke, David took this song and made you feel the emotion of it. Great job.

  5. Jason Castro - Somewhere Over The Rainbow - I loved this arrangement and version of the song, and Jason did an excellent job with it. However, as sweet and nice as Jason is, he is just not in the same league as the rest of the perfomers. Nice kid, Nice voice, but it is time for him to go.

  6. David Cook - Innocent - I had high hopes for this, and was left feeling like my man David just kinda mailed this performance in. It wasn’t bad, but it was not his best. David is still my favorite by far, but this was disappointing for me.

  7. Syesha Mercado - I Believe - Sorry Syesha, but this was every bit the trainwreck I feared it would be. I love syesha’s voice, but this week she was verging on unlistenable. This was not good, not good at all.

  8. Carly Smithson - The Show Must go On - The biggest disappointment of the night for me. I really thought Carly would nail this, and she totally missed the entire point of the song. The Psycho Killer Bunny From Outer Space Death Stare was back and she took Freddie Mercury’s signature song and totally left in devoid of feeling. When Freddie sang this song, especially in his final months, he literally ripped your heart from your chest and wrung it dry. I felt nothing when Carly sang it.

RECAP - It is really a shame what might happen this week, because Carly is a wonderful talent, may be the best technical singer of the entire group and deserves to finish in the top 5 at a minimum, but after this week she is in serious trouble in my opinion. She has failed miserably in the likeability department, and the only thing that might save her is the fact that Syesha was such a total trainwreck. On the other side of the equation, I think Kristy may have just put herself into the top 5 tonight, she is starting to blossom and connect with her audience, and AI has a huge country following.

BOTTOM 3 - Carly, Syesha, Jason. I think Jason’s girls will pull him through yet again. It will come down to Carly and Syesha, and I have to say, I am really really scared for Carly.

I gotta say that I think Castro gave the performance of the night. If you’ve heard his version of Fragile on Itunes I don’t think you’d say he has weak vocals. He connects with the music and I think he and Kristy Lee Cook were the performers of the night. Castro brought it tonight. Carly, Brooke and Syesha in the bottom three for me.

Well i wasn’t all THAT impressed with li’l david, i don’t know the song, but felt he was straining to sing in a lower range than his usual at first… meh, just ok to me

big david, too, was a disappointment to me, but i actually liked what he did… weird, eh? wasn’t as good as i thought he would be.

KLC brought it 100% tonight. Country IS her niche, and Martina a perfect voice for her to follow, so to speak. Good choice, good rendition, nice sound… i agree she really brought herself up in the rankings tonight

sorry to disagree, but since Friend is one of my all-time anthems, i have to say Brooke did an excellent tribute to Ms. King. was it original, mostly NO, but i thought a nice job. i’m sure i’m in the minority there.

liked Jason’s Rainbow, mainly because it was just different, and i thought he showed off the real Jason quite well. would i put him in the top 3? nope.

MJohns… just ok to me, but i didn’t think it was as bad as randy said…i wish he’d just bluesy-d it up a bit and it would have been perfect..oh well. someone’s sure to comment about the ascot, eh?

carly….song too big, not really comfy with her performance at all.

syesha girl, you really REALLY need to find something barely known and give it a SYESHA treatment, or you may find yourself on the post-AI circuit—however, comparing Syesha’s Believe with Fantasias—remember, Fantasia sang it WHEN SHE WON….well DUH there was emotion, ya reckon!!!

Based on reality, and not my own feelings, it will probably be Brooke, Jason and Carly — or Brooke Syesha and Carly.

Dierdre, I immediately thought of you when I heard David Archuleta’s performance tonight. He was sooo good, and I knew you, as would I, have to give him his props for a great job. He was the best tonight. Again, like you, I was pretty bored with most of the performances. Mike S, I agree with your assessment of David Cook tonight. So disappointing. He could have done just about anything else but this song. I knew this afternoon, when I saw the spoiler songs, that this was going to be a disaster for him. No emotion, no connection. What was that, anyway? Poor Carly. She needs to heed someone’s advice. But, perhaps this is why her record deal didn’t fly. Some reason.

I love that we are having such divergent opinions tonight. Some folks loved Jason’s version. Some hated it. Ditto with Brooke. It appears nobody really liked David C. or Carly. I’m not sure who has less goodwill left in the tank— Syesha or Carly. I’m picking Syesha to go but I wouldn’t be surprised if Carly was a goner, too. I only picked Michael because he went first and his performance was good, but not great. And Kristy Lee indeed has become the dark horse, the Elliot Yamin/Vonzell Solomon of this year.

By the way guys, if you haven’t noticed: Every night when i talk about the performances, they are in order of number they sang, not preference or ranking.

  1. Michael Johns- Yeah, it was a great choice, but I was expecting something more, I don’t know what…

  2. Syesha Mercado- She gets the bad spot this week. Going 2nd must suck. It just seems so..blah. TOLD YA SYESHA!!!!! Should not have chose that song! Knew it knew it knew it— and wouldn’t she…? BUT.. despite the comparison… she actually more than anyone looks and acts like a star. And she really did sing well. So, if Mariah Carey week really is next week— that high note can help! SAVE HER!!

  3. Jason Castro- Another boring one from Jay Jay…Simon you call that fantastic?! Why not compare him in a bad way too? He sang it exactly the same… zzzzzzzz… certainly was NOT the best so far at that point Randy.

  4. Kristy Lee Cook- OK… So it was her best performance. But I STILL think we are wasting our time.. Simon grrr you make me mad! Alright, Syesha’s leaving. I still happened to forget the performance by the end of the night.

  5. David Cook- Hated the beginning. Then it was just ok from there on… I really like him, but, if he didn’t have so many fans, he’d be a potential bottom 3.

  6. Carly Smithson- Yeah, wrong song, something wrong with pitch… but something about that I liked with her. Maybe because she does look good.

  7. David Archuleta- Chillin’ with the ladies. I thought he did great… other than his explanation of why he chose the song… couldn’t have been too hard.. you chose it before and sang it.

  8. Brooke White- Not one of my favorite contestants. And was merely OK tonight. She bores me almost every week. And the fake teary eyed post performance- couldn’t be more annoying!

I have to be honest, I have been reading these blogs for two years (hosing an IDOL pool in my workplace), but have never joined the dark side. By the way, you people scare me just a bit. But since I am making comments too, I guess that I can’t judge… welcome me to the fray!

First of all, I thought David Cooke was TERRIBLE for the very first time, but tink he will be safe from the bottom three.

Although I LOVE Carly, I think she is there with Brooke (also a fave of mine) and Jason (although the judges loved him, he is just a tad too Jack Johnson and BORING) in the bottom three.

I thought Syesha and Michael were pretty good considering…

I guess I should wake myself from my stupor and rank ‘em, such as they were. It was crazy tonight - up was down and good was bad, sweet was sour and , well, you get the point.

1- David A. - not his best, but easily good enough to take tonight. Would’ve been funny if that back shot had revealed that he wasn’t even really playing the piano. Kinda sick that a parent in the audience was holding up like a 4-year-old girl with a big sign saying ‘Lick Those Lips’ to David A.

2,3,4- Take your pick: Michael, David C., and believe it or not, Jason.

Michael - STOP MAKING YOURSELF LOOK LIKE A WANNABE just doing fabulous karaoke versions of overdone rock songs! Did you not learn from last week what works best for you? On a side note, just looking at you made me wanna smoke a cigarette.

David C. - He delivers week after week and I love this guy, but I don’t necessarily always love his song choices, tonight being his worst IMO. Didn’t like that song, and felt like his mind was elsewhere (which of course would be understandable, I’m just sayin…). But he did seem to be spot-on, and sorry Deirdre & Co., he looked great!

Jason - Wow I can’t believe I have him tied with these two, but he has raised his game the last couple weeks IMO. He seems to finally get that he should at least save the weed til after the show. LOL Good job.

5- Kristy. What? Cannot believe I have her this high, it’s a first. But while nowhere near Paula’s description of “unbelievable” vocals, Kristy’s performance tonight was clearly her best yet by a mile and a half. And while she just irritates me usually, she did good tonight.

6,7,8- Pretty clear bottom 3 tonight, IMO, and they were fairly even - Carly, Brooke, and Syesha.

Carly - What. Was. That. I LOVE Carly, but OMG I hated her performance tonight. What is it with the wannabe rockers? Geez this girl is so much better than a wannabe, but she came across like a pretender tonight. I hope voters don’t just go by tonight’s impression.

Brooke - Perfectly adequate. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. And might I ask who in the hell is styling this girl? I could do a better job asleep with both hands tied behind my back. And puhleeze Brooke get that sappy look off your face when the judges are talking; we are tired of that.

Syesha - SIIIIIIIIIGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH. I believe my thoughts on her song choice could be best described by the image of a Mini Cooper stopping on some train tracks because the driver needs a nap. HUH? You will never be Fantasia, be YOU and be proud!

The song choice will most likely kill Syesha - I too thought song choice was off again - shame, such a good voice. IF votes tonight were based on tonight alone, David cook, Carly, Brooke, and Jason would be bottom 4. Let’s see how the calls go. I will she shocked if Syesha stays, but won’t be too surprised if Brook or Jason goes. Jason stuff is getting old and the following may not stay strong. Brook sweetness is giving me a tooth ache but her singing and song choice is not impressing me enough and getting a little old too.

FYI Linny, Adam actually showed class tonight…

Adam & Julianne are going home. “I lost 20 pounds of fat and gained 105 pounds of angel,” Adam said, in reference to his partner and trainer, Julianne Hough. That was sweet and gracious of him.

By Justin

all righty peeps on to the rankings:

——-Based on vocal/performance——-

  1. David Archuleta- easy one there

  2. Syesha Mercado- have to admit she sounded a lot better than a lot of the others

  3. Kristy Lee Cook- |:O this girl makes me mad I’m tellin ya

  4. Michael Johns- actually he’s only here because my 4-9 are hard to pick

  5. Brooke White- zzzzzz

  6. David Cook- little boring, but sail through Cookie

  7. Carly Smithson- wasn’t the worst vocal, but still not great

  8. Jason Castro- and no this don’t mean it was terrible, just a fall asleeper for me. hey i’m a guy what ya expect?

Jason is So overrated it’s not even funny. And so is Kristy. And Brooke!

Who SHOULD Be The Bottom 3 (based on tonight): Carly Smithson, Jason Castro, Brooke White

Who WILL Be The Bottom 3: Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson, and .. Michael Johns??

Who WILL Be Voted Off: Obviously down to Syesha and Carly, and unfortunately it’ll probably be the undeserving Syesha. Even after one of her bests. SONG CHOICE! And she should have realized that so… I still have my hopes she’ll be safe, i just can’t see Carly leaving so early. But then again wouldn’t it be awkward for Syesha to leave at the same time look alike Nadia did?

Who SHOULD Be Voted Off: Kristy Lee Cook! And she’s not even in any of my bottom 3 predictions! But she should leave! Plain and simple!

I wanted to add something. I just don’t get it. Why do people continually say how awesome Fantasia was. She was nasally abd by far the worst winner of AI. This is just my opinion but I’m tired of hearing how great she was because to me she was terrible! Slam me if you want.

Tonight’s show was alright. David A. was the best. Jessica Simpson also covered that Angels song. Kristy did well too. I liked Michael. Jason was just eh not fantastic like Simon said. The rest were just ok to me.

By Negativo

April 9, 2008 12:02 AM | Link to this

Neg gives rankings:

1. Kristy Lee: Underestimate her at your own peril. This hotty can really belt it out, and now that it seems she’s found her niche and lost her stage fright, she may just be a Top 5 contender. Hers was only top notch performance of the night.

2.Sayesha: Good overall vocal and performance, but she was blasted by the judges for taking on a Fantasia song. When will the contestants learn that they need to avoid ex-Idol winner songs?

3. David Archuletta: The little giggle b******* had one of his best nights. He looked much more credible and sincere playing the piano. A few minor vocal glitches, but he did well for himself.

4. Brooke: Why-oh-why did she not play the piano for this one? It was the PERFECT song for her to sit in front of the piano and just play!! She looked panic stricken and awkward during her performance, and on the verge of a nervous breakdown after. I seriously fear for her mental stability. Good enough vocal performance, but this girl needs help.

5. Michael Johns: Decent job of an overplayed, worn out song, but more needs to be done at this point in the competition. He was just OK.

6. David Cook: WTF was that? Awful performance from DC after hitting it out of the park every time for the past 6 weeks. Wearing a ridiculous looking white drum major jacket, he began badly and then just became embarrassingly cheesy. He sucked, and better fix this fu-k up by next week if he hopes to regain front runner status.

7. Carly: A dark, dreary song choice performed like she was possessed by the devil. This has been an image problem for her from the very start (the angry face with the nasty arm tattoo). Very disturbing, and probably bad enough to send her packing.

8. Castro**: Two words: TINY TIM. Look, this maybe was the worst performance I’ve ever seen on Idol. That terrible ukelele and whispering voice was such a bad, bad combination me and the wife just burst out laughing. TIP TOE THROUGH THE TULIPS!

Tonite’s idol was pretty boring. I thought Jason was the best tonite with MJ a close second. David A is a decent singer, but he is destined to become the next Michael Buble and top the AC charts…not the pop charts. KLC was decent and she is destined for country fame. David C was terrible…and I really like him. Who picks a freaking Our Lady of Peace song??? Brooke was ok, just boring, she gives us the same sound every week. Sayesha is a little snotty for me. If you’re going to bring it then bring it. If you don’t, then expect to be compare in a bad way to the original. Carly is just not my cup of tea. Decent singer, but she emotes this sense that she deserves this.

Bottom three: Sayesha, Carly, and Brooke.

Well, it’s all been said already so I’ll try to cover the main points that stuck out to me. The one thing that really didn’t stick out was Paula. That was the worst wardrobe choice ever, it made me ask: is Paula a man?

Jason Spicoli, meh. Brooke, I’m getting tired of the 70’s singer songwriter vibe. It’s nice to see Kristy step it up a notch, but she seems to have a lot of haters that she has to win over.

David C, probably the worst of the night, Carly inspired me to be angry. Syesha and David A, yawn. Finally Michael, he butchered that song. He needs to get his head and body motions under control and sing for the audience at home, he’s not on the stage in a small bar.

Who goes home? This is my riskiest call of the year, I dreaded this one because of how they cheated us last year, but I will make the call. Someone will be eliminated on Thursday nights show.

Negativo, I think you’re underestimating his audience just a bit! You called him kissable, hey if it works for ya…not that there’s anything wrong with that but it ain’t my thing! He’s got a rendition of Crazy on Youtube you ought to check out. His repertoire is broader than lullabyes. We’ll see what happens but I think the guy has to be in the top 4.

My top 4 are: Archuletta (annoys the heck out of me for some reason but he’s talented), Cook (I’m still not sold on the fact that he’s the real deal), Johns (His performance last week was awesome but he’s inconsistent), and then Castro. The lady’s just don’t have it this year! Buckley’s Hallelujah went to number one on Itunes after Castro’s performance. I’d say he’s making a bigger impact than you give him credit for.

I didn’t get the Jason Castro song or David Archulettea. Both of them really bored me and so did Brooke. I loved Syeesha, Kristi Lee and Micheal Johns. I don’t understand how the judges fell all over themselves for Jason and David. The judges are giving the men all the praise and luke warm praise to the women. They are trying very hard to make sure a male wins this year.

By DawnH

April 9, 2008 7:20 AM | Link to this

Great comments everyone. As for the performances last night, I thought everyone was boring. But, Michael could sing the ABC song and I would love it although I didn’t really need fresh undies last night when he was done! David A just gets on my last musical nerve even with a good voice. Just can’t stand the way he acts like he is 10 years old or the I’m about to get in trouble look. Kristy is the most boring performer to me. Her voice is OK but I can’t stand to watch her. Never liked Carly.

I get very frustrated with the judges comparing the contestants to the original singers. No, no one there is a Mariah, Celine, or Whitney. But why do the judges have to compare them. They should be judged on their own voices and performances, not by Mariah’s, Celine’s or Whitney’s voices.

Finally, TC I agree with you. I do not like Fantasia. I felt that during AI, all she did was scream the songs. To me, that is not a strong voice - I can scream into a mic.

And Willie - how you holding up with all of the very long posts?

Morning mushblogians!

On Michael: The suggestion was made that he should have figured out last week what works for him…trouble is, the contestants have picked their songs at least 2 weeks before. While he may ‘get it’ now, that doesn’t mean he isn’t still stuck with the wrong songs.

Have you ever notice how NONE of them ever looked surprised when next week’s theme is announced…that’s cuz they’ve known for at least a week before.

On Jason….I know I shouldn’t keep comparing him to the guy who did that arrangement but, if y’all want to hear what I’m talking about, I googled ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Israel’…last night and youtube has it. The last name is Hawaiian, which is why I couldn’t remember it. The Hawaiian language may have a smaller alphabet but they use the letters they have a lot!!!

On Brooke…how on earth was that performance any different than any of her others? Boring!

David C must think he can sing ANYTHING and we’ll vote for him. That was a mess!

Kristie is a good singer but….she’s no Kelly Pickler…and I wasn’t that fond of kellie Pickler!

Syesha has a wonderful voice but no heart…at least it doesn’t come across when she sings.

David A had the front runner door opened up for him again last night…good performance, especially when compared to the other David.

I’ll stay on as long as I can but, if they go right to this room when they get here…I’ll say goodbye now. Hoping to be back on by late Friday or Saturday morning.

I’ll apologize to Willie beforehand…that first post is going to be long!

WOw ..I was totally surprised with Dialidol when I brought it up this morning.

While I had Kristy as the best of the night, and I like Jason’s performance — you could have won a ton of money from me betting they would be safe while Michael Brooke and David C would be in trouble.

David A at the top was no surprise. But Kristy and Jason safe - WOW WOW WOW.

While Michael, Brooke and David C are in danger they are far enough ahead of syesha and Carly, that while one of them willbe bottom 3 - all 3 will be back next week.

As just about everyone predicted the vote off will be either Carly or Syesha —- and I am going to predict CARLY.

While Syesha has shown voting weakness she does have the advantage of being the only singer left singing her style. Carly has the problem of not really fitting in to any style, and she has just not endeared herself to the audience.

It is a shame that either one of these girls will leave - Carly is probably the best technical SINGER of the entire competition, and I honestly think Syesha has the purest VOICE of everyone. But Carly just does not sing with any emotion, and both of them have consistently made horrible song choices.

Anyway, I am going to say that it will be another all girl Bottom 3 - Brooke, Syesha, and Carly. Carly is going home.

Morning! I tried posting last night, but my computer from home is soooo slow that I had to give up after one commment. I wanted to join in badly, but it just wasn’t worth it. I have a very fast set-up here at work, but even then we all know how long a post can take. Hence, Deirdre’s “mushblogians” salutation each morning. I did not know that they chose songs two weeks in advance. That does not seem helpful; especially since the judges comments might be helpful in choosing the next time. One thing I will never understand, and maybe someone can help me out here. Why would a contestant choose an obscure song that most of America had never heard at all? It is hard to connect to something so unfamiliar. I realize they want to demonstrate “chops,” but at what expense? I think that is what David C was doing last night, and it backfired.

By Mike S

April 9, 2008 8:29 AM | Link to this

I have to come to fantasia’s defense just a little here.

Yes, she won AI because season 3 was an extremely weak year. I don’t think she would have won any other season.

Also, I hated both her albums and have never really liked her as a singer.

But, props are deserved where the are deserved, and like it or not Fantasia delivered one the ALLTIME BEST AI performances when she sang “Summertime” and the girl also sang the hell out of “I Believe”.

By Negativo

April 9, 2008 8:32 AM | Link to this

Mike S, we agree - Carly is toast. One consolation for her is that she gets to perform the perfect final song. That dark, bitter, angry performance of last night will be ideal for her farewell tonight.

By harrietth

I still think that what we are seeing in Carly is the very reason her record deal did not go anywhere before. And everyone was crying “foul” at first, when it was revealed that she was a former recording artist. The cream rises every time (or not).

Last night was a night that I could have missed. No one stood out. A few disappointed me(David Cook, what was that?) Syeasha(wrong song yet again..like Simon said, last week Whitney, always a risk, last night Fantasia..(wrong to sing a song that Fantasia has got all to herself and if she(fantasia) never sing another song.we will always remember her by That song. However, maybe Syeasha should have did Summertime, which belongs to NO one. She certainly has the vocal because Summertime does not take a great effort to make your Own. Anyone who has a nice voice can sing Summertime in their own sweet calm style..anyone.its a timeless piece that belongs to again, no one. Last night in my opinion(and this is a Blog for those of you who seem to forget) last night was a dud. David’s voice beautiful but song sounds redundant sappy and something that you could not listen to more than once. Forgetable at best. Infact all the performances (my fav. David Cook included) was forgetable and I cant remember what they sang.

Good Morning to All:

My rankings were posted last night on the previous post, if anyone cares to go back and read them I think I made the last post on that blog. So no need to re-post.

I will have to agree with Mike S that KLC is the next AI Country star. She is definitely in her element and niche there. It would not suprise one bit to find out that in the future she will be opening for Martina McBride.I think that Martina would have been proud of Kristy.

What in the heck was Carly doing? She reminds of a morbid person and like death warmed over. Always on the dark side. She needs to lighten up her personality and the dark makeup. She is a pretty girl and should show it. She needds to realize that she is not a gothic person and come out of the dark stages.

Like alot of you, last night was a disappointment to a certain degree. The theme was inspirational and with the exception of a couple, there was not a whole lot that fit in with the theme. I know that there had to be better song choices, or at least, I would hope there was.

As to who is going home, close call between Syesha and Carly is my bet. Even if Michael gets in the bottom 3, which I don’t think he will, he will be safe.

And welcome aboard Nickdeacs. Hope you stay and don’t let scary nightshifters run you off. They will try to corrupt you, but maintain a strong stance and you will okay.

Boring mostly. Was so hoping Michael would blow me away again this week. Didn’t happen but I liked the falsetto at the end. Liked Jason and Brooke but no one was that great last night. There is no one I feel compelled to vote for. I predict an all female bottom 3 with either Syesha or Carly going home. Although I think Kristy Lee should still be the next to go despite her pretty good performance last night.

There was always the chance that I was going to skip through this entire night. I can’t handle an entire hour of SAP! Michael Johns Such an awesome song. He was a little pitchy, but had good audience connection. Is he wearing an ascot again?

What the heck is Paula wearing? Her pups are in pain! Those are her Chihuahuas that are screaming!

Syesha Doing a Fantasia song? Really? Is she insane?? Can she do a song not done by an African-american artist? She never really makes them her own, and there is nothing original about her. But she did a good job with this song. (Why do women growl to get those low notes?)

Jason Once again with an instrument. I love this version of Over the Rainbow, it is a fabulous version and makes me wanna cry when I heard it originally. He sped it up a bit, but he sounded good up until that very weird high note.

Kristy Lee Cook Her lower register is nice. She kinda lost her key right after the “big note”.

Why is Paula up dancing? She took too many pain pills tonight.

*David Cook * I think the band likes it when he performs. It started a little weird, but sounded good with the backup singers. He owned the stage and the audience.

Why does Simon think he can be a fashion critic? I love the white jacket!

Carly Smithson On that fashion note, her outfit is awful! The high waist and those stripes do nothing for her. She looks mad again. I didn’t like her additions to the song and the high notes were off.

Archie Who originally did this song, I can’t remember? I don’t like his low register, it was very nasaly. I don’t think he makes a connection with the audience there. I wish they would quit screaming for him.

OMG – I am totally repulsed by the little girl holding the sign that says “lick those lips”. I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

Brooke White The twang (for lack of a better description) in her singing style annoys me. It is very nasaly. She always looks like she is about to cry. She looks uncomfortable when she is not at the piano. The thank you she always puts at the end make you feel like you just watched an act at a talent show.

All in all, not as bad a night as it could have been. I am predicting an all female bottom 3, but I keep rotating girls in and out….But I am going to say Syesha, Kristy Lee and Brooke.

David A (aka Archie) has a very nice voice, but cripes, why does he look like a 12 year old? He’s 17 for god’s sake. Can’t he at least act like a man instead of a little boy. Golly, gee whiz. Gets old and where would he fit in If he won???

P S Who cares about Fantasia? Can’t say I miss anything about her screeching and yeah, yeah at the end of every song. Pulleaaaaaaaase.

David A did an awesome job with Angels. I heard it on the radio this morning and got chills from listening. Is it just me, or does David A always look and sound like he needs to blow his nose? I was also repulsed by the little girl holding up the “lick” poster. I just don’t care for this kid. I was very disappointed with David C. Ho-hum. As long as everyone is comparing, Kristy Lee can’t hold a candle to Martina. Carly, Brooke, Syesha and Michael were also nothing to write home about. I still love my boy Jason! Great song choice and the ONLY song I still remember this morning! He is kind of Jack Johnson…but I love Jack Johnson. I think Carly or Syesha will get the boot.

Mike S: I totally agree with what you said about Fantasia and her performance of “Summertime”. IMO, that has to be the BEST performance in the history of AI. In the 6 1/2 years of AI, I have seen every show, with the exception of two in 2006 when my sister passed away, and I can’t ever remember a greater performance.

Lara: What a good take on Paula’s pups. I thought that any moment they were going to bark to get out and roam for some attention. Also, the Lick those Lips sign was not neccessary. The sign could have been misconstrued by some as a porno solicitation. We could have done with it.

Has anyone else notice the amount of backup singers? I think I counted 8 of them last night. Why so many? Are they trying to drown out all the pitchy notes and make the contestants sound better than they actually are?

Also, for any of you that are not aware, Idol is on tonight at 7:30 for 2 1/2 hours. Just wanted to let all of you know the time.

Blkshepherd: Why thank you kind sir for the complement. As far as next weeks theme, I heard it was Mariah Carey. Don’t know how true it is, but we will find out.

Toilet Boy: Thought you said in an earlier post that you were going to Talledga(sp)this week end and now you are saying you going to Daytona. Well since you can’t be in two places at a time, which place is it so I will be sure not to go. Since I don’t like slimey creepy crawly things, I tend to stay away from them. Anytime you want to take the capslock off, it is really okay by us.

Flats: Although Kristy was really good last night, you are correct in saying that she is no match for Martina or Carrie. With the right voice coach, she possibly could almost reach their level. Notice the key word here, ALMOST.But she will have a future in Country Music.

Menana, Toilet Boy is actually an alter-ego of someone trying to harass both Flats and the other old time bloggers that are still here. He’s part of a racist crowd whose mentality is… to quote Ice-T, “freedom of speech, just watch what you say.”

Thanks for the amens.

JT: Thanks for the heads up. I will have to monitor my thoughts before I put them in writing. Don’t want to cause any problems here.

I don’t think that there will be an elimination night tomorrow. Got to thinking about last year’s show when IGB. That week no one when home and the following week, two were sent packing.Idol may do the same this time as well. I did find out that the lowest votes were for Carly,Brooke, and Syesha with David A receiving the most. Hope my information on this is true so that I won’t be guilty of speaking any untruths.

DawnH, by the way, welcome to the blog!

Menana, one difference this year is that they are doing 3 episodes instead of the 2 they did last year. Last year the excuse was that on a night of giving they couldn’t eliminate someone. They solved that problem this year by separating IGB from the elimination show. They probably did it to quell some of the anger that was caused last year by the way they handled it.

DawnH: Since I am fairly new here, I don’t know who TB is supposed to be. But, you have to admit he or she is a very unique person. Guess he/she needs to vent somewhere. Since all posts are in caps, maybe it is an unhappy or angry person crying out for help.I wouldn’t feel sorry for them though. That may just add fuel to the flame. If TB is a person that blogs under another name that I recongize, my aplogizies.

I know that I am on alot here lately, but since I’m on medical leave, I have to much time on my hands. Will try to resist the urge to post so much.

Menana, I’m new here too, and I don’t know who TB is either. Just recall in one of the posts someone indicated it is someone who used to post. I agree he/she may be angry and/or unhappy. Still, to be that desperate… you almost have to feel sorry for someone like that.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

TB may be someone who also posts under another name, but it doesn’t really matter who it is. it’s an obvious attempt to stir something up; unfortunately most of the people posting on this blog just find it amusing, perhaps slightly annoying, but certainly NOT worth having a hernia or heart attack….

Hey Menana…you just post all you want to darlin’ … use that medical leave to get thoroughly addicted to blogging, LOL!!! speaking of which, do you ever check out any of the OTHER AJC blogs? sometimes it’s fun to jump in on a discussion where you have some thoughts, just to try another venue than AI.

They definitely “learned” from last years IGB/elimination/non-elimination situation. It was very rude to poor little Jordan, albeit a little funny in a way… so yes, they added a “results” show for Thursday so they don’t even have to address the voting at all.

Speaking of “voting” has ANYONE heard any further rumors about the concept of “voting” for the return of an eliminated AIer to join the tour? that topic sort of died, and i never heard whether it was true or not…

sorry willie, sort of got carried away…. i’ll try to do better next time!

Flats, since we are going to beat a dead horse I might as well poke it a bit myself. I don’t think you are accurate when it comes to who TB is. The person you think it is tends to come across with a certain bit of anger in their posts regarding you and the blog. That person is upset in that they think you won and chased him and the rest away. I think that the rage and pettiness of the person you think it is can be seen in the posts made by x.

TB posts with more of the repetitive humor that is showcased by a few of the females. It’s a type of humor I can identify with as I enjoy returning to a humorous point again and again. There are a few over there that, from what I have read over the years, display this same comic approach.

Granted all this discussion does is give the parties we are discussing something to laugh about over IM’s, but as long as I can entertain someone, then I’m happy.

Thanks for clearing that up Rodney; I’m sure that “RC-the-chap” will be properly grateful that he has been cleared of the onus of being TB. I didn’t think it was RC anyway, which is why I phrased it the way i did about flats’ opinion on the subject.

It’s all a big game anyway; at least most of the posting is not being vulgar and personally offensive; it’s easier to overlook than when you are being personally attacked by someone for God knows WHAT reason.

In any event, everyone blogging with you these days, Rodney, seems to be pretty much on the up-and-up. To my way of thinking, things have settled down for 99% of the people on either side of the “great divide” and for the 1 or 2 who just have to linger on the topic … they’ll just have to get over it, one way or another. flats, that’s a hint…

how about we just drop the topic of the “Others” and let them live their own lives, as they apparently are doing for the most part? Some will prefer the type of blog we have; some will prefer the type of blog others have; some will bounce between both — the key is that we don’t need to be offensive just because we are different!

oops, there goes Linny again, being all naive and thinking the world can live as one and at peace and with sunshine and flowers and all that silly stuff!!! @¿~

The only time thing has a life is when it see’s our post..the other time is spent eating bugs.(bet that breath smell like an out house) So Marah Carey maybe next week..hmm..I am not so sure about her music..kind of like whitneys..dont mess with it..but what was that note syeasha let out last night? a little shrill. poor thang..I wonder if she has started packing? Also the chick that did..Queen, Simon said she may be in trouble..HA! from the first note that came out her mouth she was in trouble. She lost it midway of the song when she tried to go for that high note..Freddie(Queen’s front man) must have turned over in his grave. a mess. Some where over the rainbow dude needs to fly and stay. Lenny: I have and do visit other AI blogs. Even posted a few times. They are not as fun as this one. This is more interesting and entertaining, so I prefer this one.

After reading all the posts today, it seems like things are a little serious and I think it is time for a chuckle. First I will apologize to Willie for the length of the post. So here goes:

A man goes to see his preacher. “Preacher, something terrible is happening and I have to talk to you about it”. The preacher asked “What’s wrong”. The man replied, “My wife is poisoning me.” The preacher, very suprised by this, asks, “How can this be?”. The man then pleads, “I’m telling you, I am certain she’s poisoning me. What should I do?”. The preacher then offers, “Tell you what. Let me talk to her and I’ll see what I can find and let you know”. A week later the preacher calls the man and says, “Well, I spoke to your wife. I spoke to her on the phone for over three hours. You want my advise?” The man said yes and the preacher replied, “Take the poison”.

Don’t beat me up on this!!!
