4/10: Top 8 Idol elimination night: Michael Johns out!!

michael johns top 8.jpg

Mark me stunned. Biggest shocker of the year: Michael Johns is gone! Ryan cruelly gave him momentary hope, mentioning how they didn’t eliminate anybody the week of “Idol Gives Back” a year ago. But no charity this year: he really is outta here.

“I’m definitely surprised,” said a visibly flustered Johns. “I enjoyed singing that song. It’s a song about Dreams. [“Dream On” by Aerosmith]. If there’s a song to go out on, that’s not a bad one.”

Even Simon says some kind words after a few not so kind words: “Based on the performance, it wasn’t the right song. You have to learn a lesson. I’m going to miss you. You’re a very good singer and a very very nice guy.” Michael goes out to the judges and gets big hugs from Paula and Randy after singing “Dream On” out near the judges. (Michael skips the big notes at the end this time around but who cares?)

On the bright side, for the first time this season, I got the bottom three correct: Syesha, Carly and Michael. But I thought the former Buckhead denizen was safe. So I’ve been wrong picking who gets ousted four out of five times. Not good.

“It’s freaking shocking as hell,” said his friend Jason Ergle. “I don’t know what else to say.”

Going first didn’t help Michael but I’m seriously surprised he was cut out after having never been in the bottom three and gaining what I thought some currency during Dolly Parton week after a great version of “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right.”

Well, I’ll be calling his buds tomorrow and getting their reactions.

If you skipped last night’s charity event (and a good number of you did), “Idol” provided a quick four-minute summary tonight, including Fergie upstaging Heart and Kimmel ribbin’ Simon’s nips. Some leftover pleas were thrown in that didn’t make the cut last night. And they repeated the lip-synching bit with celebrities from last year using “I’m a Believer.” Seen this year: Eddie Izzard, Rob Schneider, George Lopez, Zack & Cody, Dr. Phil, Kobe Bryant, Michael Chiklis, Cat Deeley. Also: a rather lengthy Forest Whitaker video from Angola is featured midway through. And the Presidential candidate videos pop up tonight instead. (Nice joke, John McCain!)

Over 31 million votes came in, the most this season.

Up first: Brooke White. She’s safe and will probably miss her sister’s wedding. David Cook is safe, too, despite using up some his goodwill Tuesday. And David Archuleta came up third and shockingly, he’s safe, too. And the girls scream incessantly.

At 8:40 p.m., they get to Jason Castro, who is also safe. So now they’ve got four people and only one is not in the bottom three. Kristy Lee Cook comes in at No. 5 and she’s also safe.

Amount raised so far: $60 million. Not quite as much as last year - the lower ratings certainly didn’t help. But all the extra promotion tonight should bump the figure over last year’s $76 million.

The show featured Chris Brown with Jordin Sparks doing “No Air,” which proved why Jordin won last year. The song is within 8 to 10 days of hitting No. 1 (though “Bleeding Love” by U.K. star Leona Lewis might pass her before she gets the chance). “No Air” has also passed 1 million in downloads. Her CD is now past 630K. And “Tattoo” has surpassed 1.5 million downloads.

There was some controversy that the lines of last night’s finale song was censored to omit the word “Jesus,” using the word “shepherd.” This time around, in a reprise, the word “Jesus” was uttered loud and clear. The song ends with Syesha and Carly, which might be how the end looks in about 40 minutes.

I wonder if they’ll pull the same stunt this year and say they’ll add this and next week count and everyone is safe tonight. I just see it coming, AGAIN!

Looks like we get the filler tonight that they couldn’t fit into IGB last night. And I agree…great look for Kristy Lee.

I actually liked that song by Chris Brown and Jordin… not my usual listen, but i liked it. Not so sure Jordin’s gotten fatter, or if the dress was just a weeee bit too tight. B’heart the reason they moved results night to Thursday was to avoid the “no one going home” fiasco of last year, from what I’ve heard.

Well…I feel almost now like this whole AI thing is fixed! No way is Kristy Lee or Syesha or Carly is better than Michael. His fans let him down for sure. I guessed that either Kristy Lee or Syesha would be gone…I won’t even hazard a guess next week…way things are going…David A will go :(( My predictions for the top 3 was Michael, David A & David C…now I am not even sure if they’ll survive to the top 5

JT - Simon said “song choice” of course… but i think it was partly the opening spot plus his inability to somehow connect with a widespread audience. I think you hit it right on the head with your questions. And yes, every year people forget that if they get complacent about someone, there WILL be a shocker midseason. This one was a little earlier than usual, I think.

wow.

wow.

so wrong!

I am in total shock! Were the voters like me? Were they thinking Johns would cruise to the top 3 so they did not bother to vote. Man.. this is so wrong. He should have been standing when 4 of these finalist were eliminated! Brooke is still there and Michael is gone… that is so wrong.

By Justin

April 10, 2008 9:08 PM | Link to this

Um…yeah…not expected and uncalled for. guess going first clearly hurts you. i mean.. syesha, amanda, asia’h, and brooke all sang first the week they first were in the bottom.. now michael

so…. yeah i would have been mad if they tacked it on to next week though.

michael before kristy lee cook?! that’s unheard of.

Kristy has got to go next week and if she doesn’t i’ll be shocked then too!

I would have liked to see who the REAL bottom 2 was though.

Hm… well i worried over syesha for nothing, kinda, but idk i can’t stop talkin about it it’s just unreal

my dad wanted him to win, and i swore he was going to cry (lol)… he called 2 of his sisters and they are shocked too.. and one of them said she voted 5 times and knew something was wrong because she got through all 5 times…shocker..not

anyways, just kinda weird if you ask me

WOW can you say SHOCKED—-we were flipping between Survivor and AI and he was the last one i thought would be in the top 3, much less eliminated. I still think Brooke should’ve gone

By emily

April 10, 2008 9:10 PM | Link to this

my one consolation to losing the Hottness is that it looked like randy grabbed him and was talking in his ear…. hopefully, it went something like, “yo, dog, dog, i got your record deal tomorrow morning, dog.”

if not, maybe MJ can host instead of seacrest next year?

By Tami

April 10, 2008 9:10 PM | Link to this

As the shock is beginning to wear off, I think this is another Chris Daughtery (sorry if I misspelled…didn’t have time to look it up) shocker. However, I think Michael will shine like Chris & benefit by not becoming part of the AI machine, just as Chris has. That’s MY hoped-for consolation, anyway.

By JTesla

April 10, 2008 9:11 PM | Link to this

You know I wonder if it is another case of having a similar voting base split, and this time Michael was the odd man out. Usually we see it with a group of 2 or 3 ladies, this time it just happened to the men.

By War Eagle

April 10, 2008 9:12 PM | Link to this

OK I’m over the unexpected results. Let’s move on. Sorry ladies but at least the fellows have Kristy’s fine aS$ to look at a while longer.

By kd

April 10, 2008 9:19 PM | Link to this

What a shocker!! But Tami is right, this is another “Daughtery”, MJ will get signed, most likely by Clive Davis who has first options. Dolly Parton will be writing some of his songs. We have not seen the last of him. This is the guys competition to lose, so they better step up to the plate…..no one is safe.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!! just can’t believe that MJ is out. What was America sniffing? If anyone should have gone, it should have been Carly/Syesha. I really don’t understand the way some people think. Who are we ladies supposed to goggle at now? The three guys that are left aren’t worth a second glance in looks. This is just plain ridiculous. Makes me almost not want to watch anymore.

SAY IT AIN’T SOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

First year I’ve ever really watched Idol & kept up with it. This guy has what it takes to make it, and I’ll definitely be buying his 1st CD. Keep it up Michael………you shouldn’t have been gone. It should of been Carly!!!!! Good luck & keep your head up!!!!

Michael Johns did not deserve to be eliminated, but young America does not know good blues/rock and they are the ones that vote. (Jason is still there and is AWFUL.) I hope Michael realizes that there are still many people that love blues/rock and we are looking for new faces. The people we enjoy and the beauty of the music are slowly disappearing. We need Michael! Michael don’t let some record company make you something to sell to kids who think guys in long braids are cool. Give us your stuff we have seen on Idol because we love it and want it. Best to you Michael and we will be looking for you.

it’s just ridiculous if you ask me.

but anyhow.

order to sing next week (?):

  1. David Archuleta

Okay, my blood pressure has came back down after the shocker. We all know that MJ will land a recording contract also immediately. By his being voted off may have been the best thing for him. Vote the hunk off and keep the ladies wanting more. But you can bet your sweet bippie that ladies will buy his CD. He will be a star. I think that Simon at times is a two faced person. When someone of MJ’s caliber is voting all, he will most always agree with the vote while during the performances, he will praise them. Does anyone else sense that?

IMO, Michael was one of those contestants where everybody just assumed….Cook created passionate fans, Archie has the fangirly fans, Kristy has the country fans along with the horny guys. I don’t know what the attraction to Jason is, he puts me to sleep. Michael was good enough that everybody assumed he was getting lots of votes.

Does anyone remember such a long moment of silence after a results show. I don’t think that even happened when Daughtry left AI. It seemed to me like everyone was waiting for the punchline, and then the reality set in and the boos started.

I do not understand how Kristy can possibly still be there. Her voice is just mediocre and she has absolutely no personality. AGGHHHH!!!

Guess it will be Carly (ugh), David C (hopefully), and The Virgin David in the top 3…

Harmony, one thing is for sure you and I are still 100% on our elimination night predictions!!!! Someone did go tonight.

You know what I just realized; this is all Justin’s fault. All these weeks of wishing with all his might that Syesha would stay and Kristy would go somehow threw the voting off kilter and got Michael booted. Yeah, that’s what did it ;)

By idolfan

Am I the only one that heard Simon say”I hope you’ve LEARNED A LESSON”. Did he get kikced off for doing something unaccpetable last week? Seriously, are there some rules that if you break you’re gone? Because he is tons better than atleast 5 other contestants that stayed, like someone said WTF!

Menana, where have you been the past six years?? This is a popularity contest. I thought this fact has been soundly established by now. John’s fan base was middle aged women. The younger girls are voting for the other (younger) guys.

I stopped watching idol after carrie underwood won because I felt no one could top that. But let me tell you, I watched it from the beginning this year because I’ve noticed a nicer yet still crticle simon. He is still right on in his comments but he seems to have developed compassion. Then you played that song today not editing out Jesus and I am beginning to believe in your show once more. We all know this country needs inspiration and hope and playing that song with all the contestants has made me a fan of your show once more. Way to not give in to the people who might be offended, all the young people now have hope that this countrys faith is being resored. Thank you IDOL

idolfan: Simon was referring to “song choice” with that statement, that’s all; he’s been harping on Michael to show his true self and stop being a wannabe rock star (in other words, move towards the blues-rock (rather than hard rock) because you’re great at it); Simon felt that Dream On was indulgent and not a wise choice by Michael. that’s all. no ‘broken rules’

WE: I guess that I didn’t want to believe that being popular was more important than talent. You know, giving the benefit of the doubt. I have always felt that the popular counted to a degree, but come on, the show is about talent. I guess the younger generation sees things through eyes with binders on. Can’t really blames them. They can vote for whomever they want. It just seems like there should be another way to count the votes other than the way it is done. Don’t know what system AI could come up with, but at least they should try to find a new and better way of voting. So, WE, forgive me if I had my head in the sand for the last six years.

Kristy Lee is still on because she can sing good (better than most people), she is totally hot (the fellas need somebody to vote for), and she is the only country singer…and the south is the biggest voting block for American Idol. I mean, it at least makes sense that she is still in. WHAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE IS THAT MICHAEL JOHNS IS GONE!!! You have to be kidding me! But really, good for him. Now he will have a real career with the freedoms not associated with being sold out to the machine that is AI.

So Mr. Dred Locks is ahead of Michael Johns? No way - he and Brook look an awful lot like Tiny Tim and his woman tiptoing through the tulips and way out of tune with the times. The song he did last night that Simon and Randy raved about was an exact replica of the son already done used in the movie Finding Forester - why did he not get raked over the coals for copycatting like some of the other contestants have been? Michael Johns has more talent in his pinky finger than Brook, Dred Locks and the other long legged blond. It just once again shows that being blond and long legged are the only two things that matter to American Idol voters. What a travesty! I do think Michael really will go very far from this point forward and will probably be better off without Idol.

I am also shocked like the rest of you. I still can’t believe it happened or how it happened. It was shocking enough for MJ to be in the bottom 3, much less get the ax. I also agree that Ryan shouldn’t have mentioned last years second chance night if they were not going to give MJ another week. Michae is very talented and I think we will hear good things from him in the future. I also thought Kristi, Brooke, Syesha, Jason and Carly would go before MJ. I predicted the last three standing would be MJ.,and the 2 Davids. I had this shock/sick/disappointed feeling last year when Melinda Dolittle got voted off. With a catastrophe like this happening, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kristi Lee wins it all. If that happens I will probably be finished with AI.

Sorry for Mr. Johns, whose only fault was to sing the songs he actually liked. For now, its time to get some of the fodder off the show to make it watchable again. Also, count me out for next year’s Idol Gives Back—it should be called Preachy Millionaires Guilt Ordinary Americans Into Opening Their Wallets. At any rate, at least Mr. Johns can get a laugh from being outlasted by: a guy playing a ukelele on a Polynesian cover of Over the Rainbow (Jason); a girl who has a permanent home in the bottom 3 (Kristi); the second worst butchering of a Queen song behind Luke Menard’s Killer Queen (Carly); a kid who continues to prove the snoozy ballad is his only strength (David A.); the worst performances of the season by two contestants (David C. and Brooke); and Syesha (no need to say anything).

wow, I ran from the computer in the dining room to the tv set in the living room, and couldn’t believe what I was seeing 7 hearing —coudn’t believe he was in the bottom three, let alone that he was actually booted! I think I screamed “Oh No!” There were at least two blondes and a dread on the bleachers who should have taken his place. (By the way, I say that and I think Jason is adorable —but Michael was the better singer, and is such a manly man.) I thought he did great on his sing-out tho, and yes, he always looks like a rock star—like an actual musician, not a singing contestant. Poor Michael, he was so speechless, and I thought he was beating out David Cook. I’m not sure I’ll watch next week.

I was Michael Johns biggest supported going back to the initial audition when he sang Otis Redding. I figured him for a blue-eyed soul singer but frankly he disappointed me with his song selection ever since. He kept singing rock rather than soul and Aerosmith was a bad choice. I was hoping he would pick a Righteous Brothers song to sing. I’m sorry he’s gone but I’m also mad at him for his poor song choices.

I’m really not surprised at MJ going home. If you listen to him without watching him, he never had a definable sound. He was a good singer but a better mimic of other singers. He never developed a singular sound of his own. Kristy Lee has star quality which is why people, whether male or female, are voting for her. Her singing is really secondary to her appeal.

I love Carly but she is picking songs that suck. Either she starts thinking like a star who wants to develop a following and stops picking songs that only appeal to her off-beat, alternative life-style crowd and self or she will go home and soon. There will be plenty of time to be self-indulgent AFTER she sells a million records but before that, she needs to think outside of her box and sell herself to the masses. My opinion is that she is capable of doing a Celine song and talented enough to stand out. She could have done “My Heart Will Go On” and brought the house down. Instead, she is picking nothing but negative, angry songs. People are turned off by that which I think has been confirmed by how Kristy has survived with less of a voice but more of a positive image.

Syesha has the same problem as MJ in a very good voice but no unique sound. Close your eyes and she sounds like a dozen other singers. David A. you can pick out of the group as you can Carly or Brooks (even though I personally cannot stand her; to me she is very arrogant).

This is a great year and group because they are all good enough to pull themselves out of the bottom each week, but they MUST be smart and pick strong songs.

Vote For The Worst is promoting votes for Kristy Lee. I wonder how much difference they make. This was a very disappointing elimination. I expected MJ in the top 3. I have not be dial voting but have been buying their singles on iTunes — just the ones I like. I’ve bought all of MJ’s and most of David Cook’s. MJ is the only one whom I would purchase an entire CD. Guys, no one is saying that there shouldn’t be spoilers posted WITHIN THE BLOG. The point is that many people are watching on a time-delay through various methods and for various reasons, and there’s no reason to have a spoiler on the FRONT PAGE of ajc.com. If you look at it rationally, I think you’ll see that a spoiler to a popular show almost immediately after the show airs is not wise, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to request that spoilers be confined to those who seek them out.

This was the most disappointing night of all. Ryan Seacrest is a jerk for what he did at the end there are 4 people who should have been in the bottom 3 and Michael Johns was not one of them. Carly sucked, David Cook was awful, and Syesha sounds like a Whitney/Anastasia wannabe every week, Jason dread(ful)locks sounds the same every song. Ms. Shannon, M.Div. - Get real. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is in the business of reporting the news, at least purportedly. People from later time zones who CHOOSE to read an OBVIOUSLY east-coast paper really should expect to get the news before they see the show. DUH. I can see it now:

[ring—ring] “Mr. Editor, Rodney here. I’ve got a half-dozen readers out in California and Oregon and Washington State, and they REALLY don’t want you to insert headlines that give away the results of American Idol. After all, it spoils their enjoyment of the show! So I’d appreciate it if you’d upset the 100s of local (i.e. east coast time zone) readers and cater to those few from a different part of the country who are so upset. Thanks, Boss!”

ESPdeb: It happens to almost everyone. The blog format is kind of klunky, and welcome.

Shannon: AJC is about the news, not keeping secrets.

For the Daughtry and MJ comparison: Daughtry was forecast to win it all and went to #4. It was never thought that Michael would win, and he didn’t make it to #4. He has his work cut out for him. He’s no Daughtry and it remains to be seen if he can raise above the obscurity of finishing 8th.

Well I hated to see him go, but you Kristy Lee haters, once again she has proven to be smarter than you. She survived with bronchitis and the flu and now keeps getting stronger, What’s not to like, she is determined, beautiful, looks great on stage, has a great voice, unbeleivable belt, and has positioned herself in a good spot. I believe she will be top 4. And for those idiots who say her home town votes her in, the population is less than 1,000. Stop being jealous. She has earned to be where she is as have all the others. Different taste for defferent folks, evidently someone likes her.

Like everyone else, I am a bit surprised that Michael Johns has been voted off the AI Island.

However, I thought his performance on Tuesday night was the weakest of the night, and being in the number one slot probably cost him some votes as well.

From the beginning he was my favorite singer, but as Joe Hawk has so accurately pointed out his song selection has not been the best. I had him ranked number one and as the one to beat following his first performance in the week of 24 and number two two weeks ago, but I did not think he lived up to the high expectations I had for him.

That said I certainly don’t think he should have have been the one to depart this week even if his performance was not the strongest on Tuesday night.

We are frequently reminded that this is a singing competition, but it isn’t. It’s a popularity contest, and I still think David Archuleta will win. He by far is the most popular contestant. He also is a superb singer, but I do not think he has the most star potential in the current group.

Kristy Lee may not be best singer, but she has star written all over her. Now, all of you Kristy Lee haters can relax. She is not going to win, but she may make it further than you would like. I think she will last one or two more weeks.

My updated predicted order of finish:

  1. David Archuleta
  2. Brooke White
  3. Jason Castro
  4. David Cook - the next shocker
  5. Kristy Lee Cook
  6. Carly Smithson
  7. Syesha Mercado

My personal preferred order of finish:

  1. Kristy Lee Cook
  2. David Cook
  3. David Archuleta
  4. Jason Castro
  5. Brooke White
  6. Carly Smithson
  7. Syesha Mercado

Harmony, I don’t even know what to say. I just watched it on the DVR and saw that it was true. Unfrikkinbelievable.

The way Ryan mentioned about last year they didn’t send anyone home for IGB week, that was especially tasteless and cruel. They should be ashamed.

Linny… LOL “ring-ring”.

I think that people are getting bent out of shape because they TiVo’d AI. Well duh if that’s the case don’t come here. When I use my DVR to record the Olympics I know to not get on news websites, because they are going to report the news. It’s not rocket science, if you can program your TiVo or DVR then you should be able to figure out that you might see news on a news site.

It seems that every year Ryan does something to upset viewers. Last year he took the heat for putting Jordin on the spot on IGB, he took flak before that for the whole “I didn’t say you were safe” fiasco. It creates buzz, buzz creates free marketing, and free marketing means more money for the AI machine.

Money for Idol is like the Hokey pokey – that’s what it’s all about.

I was disappointed to see Michael voted off, but I will have to agree with Joe Hawk..he didn’t pick the bluesy songs like he did best. He was my top male singer. Also, achin4aiken,has it right about Kristy Lee. She does have star quality and she has gotten better and stronger as the season goes on. I’m not saying that she will win, but she has a presence that none of the other girls have. Some of you have asked, who is voting? Kristy has a strong following out here in WA. and Oregon where she is from, plus the country music community. I vote for her and will continue to vote for her. She will definitely get a country music contract whether she wins or not. I try to base my vote on who I would spend money on a CD. I would buy a Michael Johns bluesy CD, and of course, a Kristy CD. Any of the others, NO!

Ok, this is the last thing:

I finally got around to watching IGB, it isn’t that bad when you can fast forward through long stretches. I have to say that Nancy Wilson still has it goin on! Between her and Sarah Silverman I was happy.

Annie Lennox, wow! She puts all the contestants on Idol to shame, why do the judges always talk up Whitney, Celine, and Mariah – Annie Lennox is far more impressive in my eyes – and consistently so.

Hey JT, you hopefully know this already, but when I said I had watched on the dvr, I wasn’t griping about seeing the spoiler first. Just bemoaning the farce that was this results show.

michael johns should not have been gone, there was 3 there that should have been gone first. also every year they do not boot off after the charity show and why this year did they? are they going to do they same next year boot off someone after the charity show or was it only this year. and why? he is a great singer and not only a good singer I do not believe he was the last one because I had a hard time of getting through so someone was voting for him. looks a little funny to me. michael I hope some one comes along and sees you will be a hit. I will be watching next year to see if after the charity show someone gets booted off.

I just must be getting too old for Idol. Since the first season of Idol I have been there every week being one of Idols biggest fan but this year I just don’t feel and desire to watch these young people. I still have idol on but most of the show is muted.
Johns was my favorite and altho I think Archleta has a great voice and is surely a teen idol canidate I just do not have any favorite that I am that crazy about. I think that idol has run it’s course. But the numbers are still up just not for me.

I read alot of outrage over MJ leaving but did any of you rage sufferers manage to pick up a phone and vote? I just watch the show, I don’t vote so I have no reason to be outraged. Syesha should have gone in my opinion. The top two in talent this year are Archuletta and Carly. MJ was in the top 3 but I guess he just did not get enough votes. Having said who I thought the best singers were in this competition we all know that this is not a talent search but a popularity contest. Vote, vote, vote if you want your favorite to win. Otherwise, shut up and deal with the result.

JD you are right, of course. We should vote for our favorites. If you don’t vote, don’t complain. I must admit, I rarely vote, but still it is amazing that MJ could be gone when Kristy, Jason, Syesha, and Carly are still in it.

Deirdre - read your posts and, as always, you are the voice of reason. I think you are absolutely right.

Finally, I agree that the elimination was handled poorly. Shame on AI for putting ratings and controversy over the contestant’s feelings. It WAS rude, mean, and unnecessary.

Good Morning to All of You!!!!!!

Now that our blood pressure and heart beat is back to normal, let us all take a deep breath and think about the results rationally. We agree that MJ should not have gone and that there were others that should have, but the majority had spoken. Just because MJ was voted off doesn’t in no way mean that he won’t get a recording deal and that the ones left will. Oh sure, the winner will automatically, but does that mean they will become a star? No, it just merely means they have a contract. By having a signed contract does not make you a star. MJ has star quality and a certain sexy charisma that will benefit him, just like Daughtry. Look at some of the ones that were voted off in past seasons, Phil Stacy, Josh Gracin, Kellie Pickler, Clay Aiken, Kat McPhee, Jennifer Hudson, to name a few. Their careers are going great for them. Being voted off didn’t seem to hurt them and it will be the same for MJ. Just keep your eyes and ears open and you will hear about him being signed (hopefully by Clive Davis)and having a CD soon to be released. As far as Ryan being rude by mentioning the fact they did not vote off anyone last year during IGB, he has a boss and done only what he was told to do. I honestly don’t think he meant to be rude and it probably bothered him to have to say that, but he did his job as he was told. Do I agree with the way it was handled? Certainly not, but that is not my job. I realize this post is long, but felt it necessary to say and I expect to be blasted from others. But there again, if you want to blast me, its your right.

Sorry Willie.

If everyone on this blog will think back to this time during Season 3, everyone was saying the exact things about Carrie Underwood that they are saying now about Kristy Lee Cook. When she chooses the right song she sounds great. After her audition of “Amazing Grace” she was the talk of AI.

JT, you commented over night that MJ was never predicted to win and that he finished 8th to Daughtry’s 4th. That year’s 8th place finisher was also not predicted to win. He has put out a highly acclaimed CD and having good success on the charts. That was Bucky Covington. So, I can see good things in MJ’s future.

Y’all stop hatin’ on Fantasia. How can you say she gave the best performance in Idol history (Summertime) and then turn around and call her the worst winner?

I do feel that most of the songs produced for her are not fit for her. Only a couple perhaps. But Fantasia has a unique talent.

consider Knarls Barkeley’s sound. Certainly not pretty. But that hit “Crazy” sure was big now wasn’t it.

I know this is supposed to be about MJohns but i had to get my little piece in.

Thanks for reading.

cedar…to answer your question from earlier this morning, Idol made the decision to have people vote for their favorite rather than the person who should be eliminated to keep the show positive. Vote FOR someone rather than AGAINST someone.

I, personally think that they like announcing how many votes they received and feel people will vote more often for a favorite. I think it ALL has to do with vote count and the popularity of the show.

By Deirdre

April 11, 2008 9:02 AM | Link to this

To continue with my previous post…I think Idol LOVES the perception that more people vote for Idol than for the presidential election. This is completely false. Idol can have the same person voting anywhere from 100 to 2000 times, depending on their dialing speed. In a presidential election, we get to vote only once(supposedly).

By harrietth

April 11, 2008 9:02 AM | Link to this

This thing with Michael is just another case of his voting public becoming complacent, IMO. The exact same thing happened in Season 1 when Tamyra Gray was eliminated. She was vastly more talented than Nikki McGibbin, who survived ahead of her, and certainly more talented than the runner-up, Justin Guarini, who got by on the same “tween” vote we are seeing this season. In Season 3 there was the shock of LaToya London being eliminated. The judges were stunned then, too. Whoever said here it was the voters’ fault is absolutely correct. These peoples’ fans just sat out the voting, as I am sure Michael’s did this week. Everyone thought he was safe, at least for this week.

I didn’t think Michael would win it all but he certainly deserved to go much further. Kristy or Syesha should have been the next to go. But maybe like Chris Daughtry, not winning it won’t be such a bad thing for him. Somebody out there is going to want to sign this guy. I hope he sticks with the bluesy-soul type of music, he seems very suited for that.

Longtime AI watcher: good point regarding Bucky Covington.

However, he was in a season where almost everyone was scooped up for a record deal. And second, how hard did he have to work for that? That is my main point regarding Michael, he is going to have to work, people here assume that fame will simply be handed to him, it won’t be.

So far I’ve been given one example out of six seasons where someone from 8th or below has found any sort of success. It still remains to be seen if Jon Peter Lewis can find success after 4 years of nothing. The odds are not in Michaels favor, so let’s stop imitating Paula Abdul.

Sorry, didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers. I was just making an observation and adding to your thoughts that it is not impossible for him to make it. Not sure how much you follow country music but just like other genres a record deal does not always mean you will ever release a CD. And even Kelly Clarkson & Carrie Underwood had to work at it.

Yes, a Master of Divinity is an M.Div. degree. I post regarding religion sometimes and just want it out there that I’ve dedicated years of my life to studying it. I might be an idiot, but I’m a thoughtful idiot.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to ask the AJC not to post spoilers on the front page of the paper. The AJC caters to local readers, but many local readers watch time-shifted episodes. Obviously there is a limit (I think it’s reasonable to post on the front page this morning, for instance).

To put it another way, what is lost by saving the spoilers for inside the blog? No one is attempting to take the forum away here or say that Rodney and the posters cannot discuss results in real time. It’s simply asking that the link to the blog from the front page should offer discussion about the current AI results—even, perhaps “FIND OUT WHO WAS VOTED OFF AI! CLICK HERE!” That way you would still drive traffic up without upsetting those of us who didn’t realize that coming to our newspaper (which, for me, is associated with real news, not AI frippery—I go to FORT for that) would spoil our entertainment viewing.

Anyway, I’ve e-mailed Angela Tuck and requested that this not happen in the future, and we’ll see what happens.

Whether it is playful posts that get a little “innuendo”-loaded, or stupid “shouting”, or long rambling posts or short mean-spirited posts, someone is going to not like something in the blog.

so if you don’t LIKE something you see, just “step around it” or if you happen to blunder into it, then scrape it off and just move on!

With all the media scrutiny of AI, there is no way that they could “fix” a vote and get away with it. Somebody would find it impossible to keep his/her mouth shut about it so it ain’t happening.

Actually, if anyone reads the papers, TIVO has CORRECTLY predicted who will be going home each week since the beginning of eliminations. It’s “Big Brother” scary, but they are able to count how many times AI performances are rerun on TIVO sets around the country and they have determined that the least repeatedly re-viewed performers will be eliminated. They predicted Michael Johns would leave this week as his was the least request for a repeat performance. America didn’t like his song choice and he was skipped in the vote. Again, choice of song is everything.

Good point, War Eagle. It’s like telling the sports reporters to not say who won the game in case someone tivo’d it and doesn’t want to know. If you don’t want to know something…avoid the news!!!!!!

A4A — i thought TiVo predicted Syesha was going home this week. That’s what I read. Of course, that could have changed after I read the article i did, it would not be surprising, lol! But I do agree, i think it was the combination of his going first AND song choice that put him in danger…ultimately resulting in his departure. Adding the complacency factor by those who just every year assume someone is “safe” so they don’t need to vote for him/her. That is something that seems to happen every year to one popular contestant.

Hi linny,

I read that TiVo predicted Michael and it was confirmed on the news last night so maybe it was an updated, final prediction that I read. I just don’t think he made a wise choice for an “inspirational” song. I personally LOVE Aerosmith but would not describe “Dream On” as of an inspirational nature. Lest we forget, Aerosmith band members have had multiple problems with drugs and people remember things like that. I agree with the rest of your assessment, but for me, he just did not have his own sound. Great mimic, as I said earlier, nice voice, but not memorable if you weren’t watching him, and even if you were, he just never got off of square 1 performance-wise for me.

Longtime, sorry for the misunderstanding. The “let’s stop imitating Paula Abdul” was not directed at you, but to those that think Michael will automatically find success. Many people have stated that MJ will have a very successful music career, something that Paula says to everyone from those that fail to make it past Hollywood, to those kicked out in the top 24, to those like Michael that do not have the odds in their favor.

My main point is still that Michael will have to work hard and will struggle to find success.

A4A…Rodney wrote about tivo predictions just a couple of days ago in a blog with ‘a new way to measure’ in the title.. According to him, tivo predicted Syesha would leave this week

OK..after I wrote the previous,A4A, I read your NEXT comment…I hate this slooowww format. I wonder if youtube has a similar way of measuring. I must’ve listened to It’s All Wrong on youtube a 100 times.

I think Michael just doesn’t realize how good he is in one particular area. He never settled in one place. However, looking back on his performances, the 2 that got the highest praise were Arena Rock and Bluesy country…how far apart can you get?

I have always been a fan of American Idol and it’s the first time I have ever felt it was fixed. There are four contestants who should have gone before Michael.

I agree Maureen but that doesn’t mean it was ‘fixed’. Just means that not everybody agreed with us. :-(

Michael Johns was my favorite, so now I don’t care who wins. Brooke is so depressing to look at with her sad faces, Jason’s hair is ridiculous, Christy is just goofy, so no more Idol for me this year, and probably not any in the furture. It’s not fair!!!!

I find it really, really hard to believe that out of the contestants still left on Tuesday night, MICHAEL had the lowest amount of votes… It’s just absurd.

I was really mad last night - but then I got to thinking… Michael Johns is easily the best singer AI has seen thus far; the music that he is capable of making is nothing like the music that most AI winners/contestants in previous seasons put out. Which, IMO, is a GOOD thing.

When I hear Michael Johns, I hear a young Paul Rodgers or someone like that - the majority of kids, tweens, and people voting for the “American Idol” probably have no idea exactly HOW good of a singer and performer MJ is. Which is fine. He has a future.

AI can have their drama queens and their sub par, open-mic night in a college town singers… I won’t be watching again.

Hey, yall, I’m new to the blog, but I read it alot. I’m actually a southerner..just lived in the NW a long time. A couple of things: I don’t feel that AI is fixed. They stress every season to vote and vote for your favorite singer. I do check Dialidol and it had MJ,Syesha, and Carly in the bottom three. It actually had Archie,Jason and Kristy in the top three. Does anyone know if they line them up as to the most votes on the results show. Last night, they had Brooke first and she was in danger on dialidol. Unfortunately, I think Archie’s ‘tweens will get him through to the finals. I sure hope not.

I’m not so sure the fix wasn’t in on this one. Syesha clearly should have been the one to go home. You could tell by the look on her face last night. I think this has more to do with keeping a black person in the mix. I don’t think they have the backbone to deal with the media hype that would have ensued had Syesha been eliminated. What a shame that AI has turned this year into a racial contest already.

i cannot believe michael is gone and they left four of the worse. the same thing happend to chris daughtry last year and look where he is today. he and david cook were the best. both looked like stars. david a. is too young and doesn’t have the star quality. they made a big, big, huge mistake!!!!! who’s next david cook?!!

MAG000, Everybody has an opinion but yours is WAY out there: “..Michael Johns is easily the best singer AI has seen thus far…” MJ didn’t deserve to go last night but he wasn’t top 3 material most years. He’s near the top of the weakest final group AI has seen thus far, Tyler Hicks excluded.

Don’t know why it double posted, I didn’t even refresh… whatever.

Perhaps it’s my music taste, but I personally feel MJ has the best voice and stage presence that AI had ever seen.

Like I said, I’m not that big a fan of the music that many previous contestants have put out.

I will miss AI, but after last night’s mean-spirited elimination of Michael Johns, I’m done. He’s the only one for whom I’ve ever voted. Wasn’t able to Tuesday night, we had a power outage due to bad weather. Simply shameful. They lost the best performer in AI history, and did it in the cruelest fashion. I hope AI ends after this season. Best of luck to MJ, and my eternal gratitude for re-introducing me to Queen and Freddie!

As long as they pic another hot blonde like Underwood , they can’t go wrong. The gay boys and ghetto girls don’t seem to do as well once they’re off the show. The best formula is a young HOT blonde, you can’t go wrong with a young HOT blonde. Yeah…a young HOT blonde mmmmmmmm

I honestly think that they all sing pretty good and in my opinion the weakest is jason c. All kristy haters.. Give it up shes not my favorite but she doesnt suck. My personal top 3 would be david a. Carly s. And brooke w. And about michael he wasnt really my favorite, and i really didnt think he was going to win but i totally think he was really good. Maybe hes still got some hope but he will totally have to work for it. And about the whole ryan issue.. He really does seem like a nice guy.. Pretty sure he didnt mean to be rude. Although it was kind’a mean. Mmmm…didnt really get the whole carly comment the one about “this is total crap” i’ll have to watch it again.
