4/22: Top 6 Idol performance show
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

If you hate Broadway, you’d happily skip over tonight and watch “The Biggest Loser.”
But despite a true mess that was Jason Castro, he was sandwiched by two great performances, a very good one, a good one and Brooke, who I’d say was a split decision.
My rankings: 1- Syesha Mercado (totally in her element!) 2- David Cook (who woulda thunk he could pull that off?) 3- David Archuleta 4- Carly Smithson 5- Brooke White 6- Jason Castro
The bottom three is pretty easy this week. It has to be Carly, Brooke and Jason, with Jason going home. He really tanked it this week with a bad, bad song choice. He may as well have taken Kristy Lee’s “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.”
Again, I made these picks without reading any of your comments or checking dialidol.com. What? Syesha is in the danger zone? Not surprising the two Davids are safe.
Anyway, a standing ovation for Andrew Lloyd Webber. He was possibly the best mentor/coach on Idol since Barry Manilow. He gave each person truly useful advice and provided us viewers proper skepticism when need be.
And it was great to have Ricky Minor and the band closer to the contestants, though Syesha was the only one to truly take advantage of it.
Up first in what we shall from now on call the death spot: Syesha Mercado (“One Rock ‘N Roll Too Many” from “Starlight Express”) She has a theatrical feel about her so this could work for her to ham it up. A fetching tight dress doesn’t hurt. She works with the band and hits all her notes. She let it go and had fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it. So people—vote! She deserves it! Randy: “This may surprise you. I feel tonight not only is your element. You could be a huge Broadway star.” Paula: “This is your happy place.” Simon: “That was very sexy… I think this was one of your strongest performances so far. You showed masses of personality we haven’t seen before.” Good sign—at 9:15 p.m., I’m hitting busy signals on the 01 line so I went to 07 and things were clear there. A
Jason Castro (“Memory” from “Cats”) Another ballad for Jason to emote upon. He does it in a very whispery way. It’s rather horrid at points. This song really needs a stronger voice to work, especially the lower registers. (Oh, boy, the hands are waving in the mosh pit.) A nice subtle ending cos really, he couldn’t ever hit the big notes anyway. I sense trouble. Randy: “I thought vocally, it was a little bit of a trainwreck. It’s not the type of song for you. Too big of a song.” Paula: “Everyone is so used to hearing this song by a female power balladeer. That’s not who you are. It was a very wise choice. [huh?] It allows you to put your influence on it. [so?]” Simon: “It felt to me the longest two minutes of your life. Reality it came over as a young guy being forced by your mom and dad to sing a song you didn’t want to sing. You were miserable throughout. I was miserable. It was a struggle.” C
Brooke White (“You Must Love Me” from “Evita”) You have to love Andrew’s frankeness, First he disses Jason (properly) for his song choice, then he says Brooke has no clue what she’s singing, at least at first. He coached her properly on the background of the song about a dying woman’s plea. Oooh. Second time, she had to start over. Wow. Big stumble! Brooke looks really uncomfortable. No piano, no guitar. At least she only has to sit and stand. Vocally, she actually isn’t bad. And she ends strong. I ended up liking it despite the problems early on. Randy: “This wasn’t great. Parts were good once you started. One thing -you listened to Andrew Lloyd Webber. You need to believe what you’re singing. I believed in the vulnerability. Vocally, a little tough.” Paula: “You must never start and stop. You’re strong enough and great enough to pick up the pieces. What I did love is you didn’t overact.” Simon: “It was so dramatic. It completely threw you. You were so tense. Your voice was straining. You will be disappointed when you watch this back.” She chose to stay quiet during the judge’s feedback. Simon was actually kind about her starting over. And you know—I’m cool with that, too. She handled it with dignity and she acted humbly. B-minus
David Archuleta (“Think of Me” from “Phantom of the Opera”) Another song meant for a girl and Andrew was baffled. He did it in a different way from Andrew’s version. He told him to open his eyes. Good advice! This is yet another one of those ballads I tend to hate but David really knows how to make them bearable. And with eyes wide open, he sold the song, brought it home. It was a good week for the young David. Randy: “Dude. It was the bomb. This boy is the one to beat!” Paula: “It was absolutely perfect. You took a risk on a known theatrical song and turn it into a pop ballad.” Simon: “It was a pleasant and one of your weakest performances over the live shows. It was a bit forgettable for me. Sorry” Simon’s earlier promise to stop apologizing has been broken, eh? A-minus
Carly Smithson (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) He’s the first mentor to just veto a song that I can recall. (Someone with a better memory might be able to tell me otherwise.). She started singing “All I Ask of You” from “Phantom” and he said that’s the wrong song for someone with a chest voice. She went for “Jesus Chris Superstar.” Much better pick! Wow. She’s smiling. Only minor Killer Bunny From Outer Space moments. The music mix during the chorus was a bit off and her singing a beat off was offputting. But it’s true. She really is enjoying herself. It was good. Not quite as good as Syesha but good enough. Randy: “I don’t know if it was your best performance. It was definitely good. I like the outfit. It’s kind of fly.” Paula: “I thought it might be too high a range but I loved waht you did in the chorus.” [I didn’t.] Simon: “It got a bit shouty in the middle. It was actually one of my favorite performances of the night.” She held up a T-shirt that says “Simon Loves Me (This Week)” Cute, but surely some might find it over the top. B-plus
The pimp spot: David Cook (“Music of the Night” from “Phantom”) He has done musical theater and Andrew says it’s sensual and he has to sex it up. “It was strange to stare longingly into Lord Andrew’s eyes,” David says, chuckling. Andrew said “maybe it will work.” This is definitely not a David Cook we’ve seen before. If any song tonight feels Broadway, it’s this one. He left the grunge at the door this week. And surprisingly, he pulls it off. He even hits that high note! He sold this to one of the hotter sorority girls in the mosh pit, for sure. Bravo! Randy: “That was an amazing vocal performance.” Paula: “This proved you are so well rounded as a performer. YOu have a beautiful instrument.” Simon: “You made the most of the song. I much prefer the grittier. It was too rounded off.” A
In other Idol news:
-Power ratings. Both ew.com and TV Guide are doing weekly “power ratings” ranking the contestants based on your votes. (I’ve requested we do the same thing but have only gotten shrugged shoulders.) David Cook is No. 1 in both rankings. Jason is No. 2 on ew.com, slipping ahead of Archuleta. Carly is at No. 4, Brooke at No. 5 and Syesha No. 6. At TV Guide,, the rankings are the same except Archuleta is No. 2 and Castro is No. 3. Syesha has been in the bottom two for six straight weeks yet has survived into the top 6. That’s impressive! The gambling sites remain in Archuleta’s camp.
-Have you noticed that “Idol” has been much more amenable for press to sit in the audience and report on how the show operates, at least from the crowd’s perspective? Entertainment Weekly is there virtually every week and even the New York Times stopped by, noting how organized the show is.
“At the end of every performance you will stand on your feet.” That is one of the commandments offered by Cory Almeida, the indefatigable warm-up man who exhorts and instructs the audience for 15 minutes before each performance and during the numerous commercial breaks.
For the audience members who stand in the “mosh pit,” the area immediately in front of the stage, special instructions are required. “When you are applauding after a performance, we need your hands above your head,” Mr. Almeida said before a recent Tuesday performance. “Otherwise we can’t see that you’re clapping.”
-And for your amusement, a Baltimore Sun story bemoaning how irrelevent Idol is, a story that features quotes set up to prove the writer’s point more than anything else.. I don’t agree with all his points but yes, “Idol” is showing signs of strain, the inevitable consequences of middle age. It happens to all of us!
-William Hung’s appearance fees must be finally drying up because he’s gone back to school, according to the California State University Sundial newspaper.. When I interviewed him last year, he said he had made more than $1 million. Not bad!
Before his 2004 appearance on “Idol” that made him the most famous mocked contestant of all time, he had been attending UC Berkeley but never finished his schooling because of the infamy (and cash) he received for singing — badly.
-Jordin Sparks, now resting her voice after an acute vocal hemorrhage, just got lapped on the top 40 charts by Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” discovery Leona Lewis and her song “Bleeding Love.” So “No Air” might end up getting stuck at No. 2 and not go to No. 1. I had a feeling that might happen.
And Mariah, who just appeared on “Idol” last week, should be disturbed—her first single “Touch My Body” is already losing steam on the charts after just 9 weeks and a couple of weeks in the top 10. Madonna’s single “4 Minutes” (with a heavy assist from Justin Timberlake”) jumped into the top 10 in just a month. Daughtry’s third single “Feels Like Tonight” appears to have peaked at 12. Carrie’s “Last Name,” her third single from her current album, is on the verge of the top 10 on the country chart. Both Bucky and Kellie have singles that are now falling off the charts after making it into the top 20. Josh Gracin’s “We Weren’t Crazy” is struggling but still gaining airplay and is at No. 26. Chris Sligh’s “Empty Me” is at No. 19 on the Christian soft rock chart.
-TMZ twisted some of Carmen Rasmussen’s comments last week to make it sound like she was truly peeved. “She went home in sixth place, to lead a life of obscurity and bitterness,” the gossip site noted. But she told [the Deseret News} that’s no the case: “The only point I was trying to make was that some contestants get more attention than others,” said Rasmusen, who — surprise! — was not contacted by TMZ about its story. “I chose that example because Clay is so well-known.” (She had said Clay got more time with the coaches than she did.)

Haven’t posted since this morning. Just now got back on. On the previous thread, there were alot of good suggestions and some new bloggers. To them I say Welcome Aboard…..
As one previous poster suggested, I think it would be good for the contestants to write their own music. If any of you have ever watched Nashville Star, they do this. When Buddy Jewel won in season one, he wrote two excellent songs and they both became number one hits for him. The first was ” Help Pour Out The Rain” and the second was “Southern Comfort”. I honestly feel if a perspon can write their own lyrics, they do do more justice and fit their personality into the song.
I will have to agree with Deirdre that Webber just may have given Carly her exit. I guess we will have to wait and see how it all turns out tonight. And hope it is not boring.
The next few weeks has got to have better mentors and themes. Don’t think they can get much worst than what they have already. I’m still waiting for Motown (50 & 60’s). That has always been a favorite of the fans. Also the Big Band era is a good theme. Just don’t understand the way the producers have gone this season. If they were trying to improve the show and ratings, it didn’t work and it shows.
We can only hope for the best for the remainder of the season.

I’m a little worried about how Jason’s soft style will carry Memory! That can be one powerful song!
I have to agree… Carly doing JCS is a little odd to me.
and i will be extremely interested to see how Mr. Cook handles HIS choice, if this list is right!
well, i love Weber and his plays. I’m not so big on the Barbra Streisand style of musical theatre, but i love musical theatre in general.

JT - I cannot agree with you there. All else aside, I think talent should be reflected in the standings. Please don’t tell me you think Jason has more talent than David A. Maybe I should ask, do you?
As for tonight, yaaawwwwwnnnnnnn. This theme is the lowest on my list of favorites, equaled only by (sorry Menana) Big Band.

Menana, I didn’t see the first season of Nashville Star, but I have watched a couple of seasons. I thought the nights they performed their own music was the worst night of the season. Most of the songs were just awful. I think you have to be truly gifted to be able to sing and write.

Poodleshark…my list is pretty much confirmed. It should be an interesting night. I like the idea of David Cook singing Music of the Night much better than Archie! :-)

Songluvr, your right by saying that David A. has more talent, I believe that he does. However, that doesn’t mean I like him more. In my mind opera singers are at the pinnacle of musical talent, but I’d still rather listen to Ozzy Osbourne. I have to root for what I like, which often times does not involve talent. In the case of Jason and Archie it is the lesser of two evils, I was uninterested in Archie before I was uninterested in Jason.

Songluvr, thats okay to disagree about the Big Band era.Everyone has ytheir likes and dislikes. No problem.
DawnH, I agree that to be able to write and perform your own songs is a gift indeed. Buddy Jewel just has that gift and he was great to watch and listen to. There were some that wrote their songs and they were not worth a flying pig. Is that show still on? I haven’t kept up with it like I have AI. Although I am a country music fan, after the first couple years of NS, I kind of lost interest in it.

I was checking out an ALW website. The LA Times has an interview with him. While he is not allowed to discuss the songs being sung tonight, he was most impressed with… BROOKE.
Here’s the quote: Although Lloyd Webber was barred “under pain of death” from revealing the song choices, he was allowed to speak of being struck by one moment in particular. “The girl who I was really quite impressed with was Brooke. She was really — I got something out of her. I mean, whether or not, you know, that is there at the end, I really couldn’t tell you.
Too bad he isn’t at the judges table. His comments sound just like Paula’s and Randy’s.

Same here, Menana. I lost interest too. I don’t know if it is still on. I saw commercials for the “cross over” that, I think, John Rich hosted where rap, latin, and other types of musicians tried to go country but I never saw the show. I think Julio Iglasius (sp?) won. Anyway, it was the Latin music guy who won. Go figure.
WE - LOL!!
Deirdre, thanks for the Josh Groban youtube site. That was great - doesn’t give me hope for the contestants tonight. These songs are difficult. But, David C gave me a twitter when he rocked Lionel Richie - we’ll see…

Deirdre: Thanks. I think I’ll let David C. surprise me, and check out Josh Grobin’s version later tonight.
JT: That makes a bit more sense. : ) I wonder, did you become disinterested in DA because of his performances or the teenybopper hype surrounding him?
Flats: John Smoltz is one K away from 3000, and the count now is 2-2. OOOOOOO! Make that 3000 - He just did it!!! 3000 K’s - he’s only the 16th man in history to get ‘em.

I think David Cook is capable of doing that song in a way that is both meaningful and beautiful. And modern! Let’s see if he does.
Re Andrew Lloyd Webber’s opinion of Brooke…the guy has always been a sucker for pretty girls with long curly hair. We’ll have to judge for ourselves.

Well so far, unfortunately, i do think brooke and jason are bottom-two material. i actually enjoyed Memory done his way, but again, it’s too low-key, too mellow, for today’s audiences. A think, too, Brooke was brave, … BUT … forgetting a lyric at this point in the game is a bit of a tell … her nerves may just have killed her chances of going further.
archie was competent, but i was not terribly impressed! i kind of agree with simon

If Brook does not go home tomorrow, America got it wrong. Syesha was great, Jason sucked canal water, David was spot-on perfect and gave a very original performance of his song and Carly just gave the performance of the night. The only thing left is what I’m anticipating to be the performance of the season with David C.!!!! If after all those, Brook still causes someone else to leave, I will be beyond disappointed.

Sayesha did well and can sing on Broadway. It may be because I don’t care for JC and his lack of any range but even with Brooke’s breakdown (lyrics only so far) he should go. Carly did very well but will p** some off with the t-shirt. I figure David C will do well.

Did Carly shout and scream the middle of the song or are my ears playing jokes on me? Overall, she did pretty good. How about the T-shirt Ryan gave her?
Syesha I think was really really good. She looked comfortable and certainly was in her element. She would do good on Broadway and chances are she will end up there.
Jason: What a complete mess!!!! He may have to pack his bags. He looked very uncomfortable, scared and like he was in quite a bit of pain. He butchered the song.
Brooke: After a bad start, she came through and did an okay performance. Think she will be back next week.
David C: Man oh man, what a performance. I think IMO, that was his best performance for me..
Best: David C Worse: Jason
Who’s going home? Jason or Brooke

I think it’s time that all the adults who blog here put their strength together and pledge to vote for David Cook to win Idol. I don’t think we have to this week and maybe not next but…the time is coming that we must fight for Cook!
One: David Cook…a lovely simple rendition of a beautiful song. He put heart and soul into the performance.
Two: Syesha…not only did she sing this song really well…as I knew she would….but she was masterful in the performance!
Three: Carly. I was wrong…she did a great job with an EXTREMELY difficult song!
Four: Archie. Ok..it was nice that he made a more contemporary pop sound with this song but his voice seemed kinda weak to me.
Five. Brooke The stop and start was VERY annoying, especially since she’s done it before..how many free passes does she get?
Six: Jason….this is a gorgeous song and his version was a travesty!

WE - I think he’s an idiot (LOL). And I think he needs to admit that he is in love with Simon! Sorry - just needed to vent a little. Thanks for listening.
My order: David C, Syesha, Carly, David A, Brooke, Jason.

Unfortunately, Syesha jumped her intro. She came in 2 bars too early and the band, stellar pros that they are, caught up and covered for her. She was in her element and might have garnered a tie with David C. but the miss on coming in took that away. Brook did the absolutely unthinkable and should go home. On Broadway, and yes, I was in a show, no one NEVER, EVER stops and starts their performance. The orchestra would never stop. You DON’T do it! It was entirely unprofessional. Even Jason didn’t stop. She deserves to leave. Without a doubt.

I was really dreading tonight and was quite pleasantly surprised with what I think was a great night.
There was one Absolute amazing vocal masterpiece, three superb performance, One absolute vocal trainwreck, and one disaster that destroyed what was actually a beautifully sung song.
On to the Rankings:
David Cook - Music Of the Night - For me this was on the level of Fantasia’s “Summertime”. Tonight David showed that he is not just a great rock singer, but he is just flat out a great singer. This was a vocal masterpiece. Absolutely breathtaking.
Carly Smithson - Jesus Christ Superstar - MY love/hate relationship with Carly continues. One week she sounds likeing a screeching banshee, the next week she rocks the house down. Tonight was one of her best. She absolutely sparkled on stage, and was elctrifying. She did not try to overpower the song, and just sang. And she sang absolutely fantastically.
David Archuletta - Think of me - Another solid Monchichi performance. I have to admit, I really liked this. I would listen to this on the radio. Very very good job.
Syesha Mercado - One Rock and roll Too Many - HALLALUJAH!!! Syesha did not try to go big!! She did not SCREAM and SCREECH!!! She SANG!!! She bubbled!! She showed a personality! FINALLY!!!
Jason Castro - Memory - Kill me now. This was awful. Randy said it perfectly - A total trainwreck. He is only in 5th because of Brooke’s disasterous gaffe.
Brooke White - You Must Love Me - brooke , I do love you, I think you sing beautifully. I think you sang this song wonderfully. However, YOU CANNOT FORGET THE STINKING LYRICS AT THIS POINT OF THE COMPETITION!!!!!! ANd for that one reason, YOU MUST LEAVE US!!
Bottom 2 - JAson and Brooke. I will not denegrate any of the other performances by putting one of them with these two. I will not shed a tear if Jason leaves, but in all honesty Brooke must leave this week for committing the cardinal sin of singing.

Today we were talking about the lack of personality on stage. I think that, of all the contestants, I’ve come to like Carly(as a person) best. She’s enthusiastic, excited, emotional and her personality shines though along with her sense of humor. I know she won’t win…but she has a great voice and an outgoing charm!

You may be right, Dawn, about the reason Simon is giving Brook a by but that too is totally wrong. He is not her shrink and she does not deserve to be “saved” from herself. She is a mess and her arrogance know bounds as she proved again in stopping and starting.
I’m also glad Deirdre brought up the fact that Brook has forgotten the lyrics before and was given a pass. Wrong if she gets another.

I think tonight was one of the best TV shows that I have seen in a long time. Brooke’s mess-up even added some drama to it that it normally lacks. IMO, Castro has milked that “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” night and tried to catch lightening in the bottle every week since then. Tonight, the dude needed to be stopped during the song and just sent packing. It sucked.
Carly and David brought the house down and overshadowed a very good performance by Syesha. Ryan is a goofball, and I’m telling you - there is an anti-Ryan backlash building that could hurt AI. He needs to stop trying to BE the show.

I don’t get the ‘anti-Ryan’ backlash. He’s the host…it seems to me that he’s doing what he’s supposed to do…highlight the contestants, joke with the judges and bring the commercials in on time.
Michael Johns has already stated that the rude ‘give the guy some hope’ statement that Ryan made during Michael’s elimination, came from the producer.
He’s following a script that he didn’t write.

Well, this wasn’t quite the snooze I was expecting, and who knew ALW was funny?!
1- Syesha - gotta give it to the girl. Really it’s probably a tie between her and DC but I’ve never given her the top seed, so here it is. Great great job. Her personality cup was running over.
2- David Cook - I said it last week and I’ll say it again, this guy just keeps getting better and better. He is a star.
3- Carly - I loved it. She throws caution to the wind and puts her whole self into a performance and she works the stage like a pro, on top of having an outstanding voice.
4- David A. - I think this kid could sing the phone book and make it sound pretty. I loved how he personalized his song. And btw he is NOT in any sort of grouping with the next two, I just thought it would be a cop-out for me to do a 4-way tie for the top 4.
5- Brooke - It was aight for me. Good job, got into the lyrics good, okay.
6- Jason - Bless his heart. His weaknesses were deafening.

My pick for the finale right now would be D. Cook vs. Carly. I don’t care for Carly much but I believe those two would make for the most interesting conclusion.

Looks like we are all in agreement. I worry about Brooke if she is the one to leave tomorrow night. In case she does, I hope they have a medical team available as she just might be in need of it. She seems so very fragile. After landing in the bottom 3 earlier and having a meltdown over that, what will happen if she is eliminated? I just hope that she has prepared herself for the worse. As the saying goes ” Expect the worse, but hope for the best”.
Does anyone know what the theme for next week is yet?

Neg’s take:
1. Sayesha: She was phenomenal. I watched her thinking she was a professional Broadway singer at the top of her game, not an idol contestant trying to make the leap from amateur to pro. She was the star of the night, and seems to have figured out how to avoid over-singing songs she can’t handle.
2. David Cook: The guy is awesome. He can belt out pop rock, grunge and Broadway with equal aplomb. If he doesn’t win it all than the show is meaningless. Freaking crazy good performance. This guy just can do it all (accept sappy, nauseating Kumbaya tunes on telethon night).
3. Carly: She could barely be heard over the band and the backup singers, but what I could make out sounded strained and way too big for her limited range. She just is not the power singer she thinks she is, but I did like how she rocked the song and thought she gave it everything she had.
4. Archuletta: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…wake me when he’s done heavily breathing his way through another tedious ballad. Boring, boring, boring. Still, nothing could be more annoying than having him mobbed on stage by 11 year old girls during his pre-song interview with Seacrest.
5. Jason: Where is Belushi to smash the guitar when you need him? Can you say horrible? All this clown can do is whisper lullabies, yet every friggin weak the 16-21 year old girls just fall all over themselves because of his “bedroom eyes”. If there was any justice he would have been eliminated on ucalaley night last month, but apparently he can whisper his way through anything because he’s so “dreamy”.
6. Brooke: OK, I said last week she absolutely must go before she has a total meltdown, and tonight we got to see her best Tonya Harding immitation. Have any of you seen the Seinfeld episode with the annoying chick who cries all the time and Jerry can’t stand her? Yep, that’s the one.
Bottom two: Brooke & Carly (Jason is indestructible). Going home: Brooke, at last.

You know the interesting thing abou this season…. The last 7 may be competing on this stage, but they are all suited for a different genre of music and won’t likely compete with each other on any charts. It’s hard to compare Syesha to D. Cook. If you like rock, you aren’t going to vote for Syesha. Each of them could do well in their own genre, with the possible exeption of David A. Not that he’s a bad singer, but what style of music would he sing to make an album? Maybe Broadway for him…. Brook and Jason can’t win this thing, but I’ll buy their CD’s.

Well after watching the performances back on youtube…good night…kinda.
Just going to get on with ratings.
SYESHA MERCADO- And no this ain’t favoritism! She is bringing life to the stage unlike becoming-boring David A. (don’t get me wrong, he is great)… but she knows how to performe. Hence again the reason she should be in the top 3 or 4. Absolutely incredible tonight and with the time i had my votes went straight to her, as they do every week :). Let’s hope now she can keep it up.
DAVID COOK- Thought he was going to be number one tonight, but although his vocal was very good, I too like the other side of him better, as Simon said. So that is why he falls to 2.
DAVID ARCHULETA- Like I said, he is getting pretty boring. This song was ok, and I think it sounded good, but he is slipping performance-wise, and is becoming one of those sleepers. It is a shame b/c I have always liked him. He just needs to really …. do something different.
CARLY SMITHSON- Performance was good…singing was aiight. Still have gotten judge feedback on youtube, since there is none currently. She’s at the bottom of dialidol— which i’ll just say is wrong. STILL though, for me, she has yet to prove herself..
Brooke White- Bad start, for the 2nd time, and it is really getting irritating. I know it is mistake, but if she’s gonna be here, she should get past that. Other than that she was pretty good…well for herself at least. It was ok overall. Still she’s not good enough vocally for me for this stage at the competition. She did look good though, and didn’t talk back!
Jason Castro- I’m done w/ the originality statement, b/c I will never buy his CD’s. Not only does he apparently do drugs, make weird faces like he’s trying hard to sing (which in turn doesn’t even sound good), and sounds the same every week, but on top of all that he is NOT A GOOD SINGER!!!!! I Just don’t get it. Girls out there— stop it! I cannot stand this guy for one more week. He is so boring. And I don’t want to see anymore of it. He seems cool, but not for me.

Well I liked half of the show does that mean it was good?
Syesha showed that there is still eye-candy left in Season 7, and she did a great job with the song. Carly was nice and upbeat, she didn’t bore me which is a good thing, and David Cook really impressed me with his vocals.
Brooke, what a mess. Has a top 10 contestant ever had to start a song over, aside from when she did it a few weeks back? She and Jason just stunk. Can both be kicked off? I guarantee you that if either Brooke or Jason aren’t given the boot Wednesday night I’ll stop watching the show, at least until next Tuesday.

WE, Archie will be doing Coke commericals (background vocals) and having a guest shot on King of the Hill, but that’s about it. Until his fans get old enuf to have credit cards or a job, no one will buy his music. DC is a lock, and KLC will sell music IF she bares it all on the CD covers. I’d buy it! I think Carly can do well in a rock band, but really see her more as a lead singer. Brooke will have Christian music on her side.

Syesha will do just fine for herself after this season is done with (although she’ll probably go home in another Idol shocker tomorrow). Jason was HORRIBLE last night. Brooke - oops. You can’t start over on national television. Carly - good until she started screaming. Syesha - very entertaining and in her element, but not memorable. I feel that Jason did just fine. That is his style. There was a limited amount of songs to choose from, after all, so why come down on him for the same thing that they had praised him for before, when he didn’t have that much of a choice? I know that the song would also take some “belting,” but if the character is supposed to be “aging,” I feel that Jason’s soft voice brings out that quality. I will have you know, too, that reportedly Jason was very sick and needed an IV before and after the show. But unlike with Kristy and others who were sick, no one knew, because he didn’t want sympathy and it to be an excuse for a possibly poor performance. He knew that it was a stretch for him, and he went for it. He is a class act and should be commended.

Some excellent performances tonight, 1 trainwreck, and 1 off the tracks. My ratings:
David C. - Wow, just wow!
David A. - Great arrangement, great performance!
3 (tie). Carly - Great energy, great outfit!
4 (tie). Syesha - Also great energy, great outfit! Really a tie with Carly, IMHO.
Jason - Very weak performance. Totally WRONG song!
Brooke - Bye Bye!
Jason and Brooke should be the bottom 2, with Brooke leaving.
I think we’ll have an all-David final. They really are the most talented and most consistent of the contestants.

Good morning mushblogians!
And a very good one it is…a night that promised disaster was, instead, fun, interesting and unique(in that a mentor actually mentored).
Not that we didn’t have disaster. Brooke, faltering and beginning again…AGAIN, proved once and for all that Simon, who would have ripped anyone else a new one, is just an old softie when it comes to crying females.
Jason took a beautiful song and mouse-squeaked his way through it.
But the rest of them did good to wonderful renditions of their music.
Who will go home? Nobody knows, not even dialidol, who last week predicted KLC to be ‘safe’.

These were songs that separated the pros from the pretenders, for sure, exposing the weakest voices in the group: Jason & Brooke.
1. It’s Jason’s time to leave, showed he just how far he is from the big leagues.
2. Brooke’s flubbed beginning and her overall nervousness mean she can’t cut it down the stretch. Sincerity and vulnerability are not enough.
3. Carly should’ve done Jason’s song. I liked her performance, but it showed she’s not as strong as she thinks — she couldn’t hit the notes in the chorus!
4. Syesha’s “personality cup” ran over — not the only cups which spilled over, and to her benefit. Fun to watch. 5. Davids were very good, as usual. David C. showed he had unexpected range, so that was important. Would’ve loved to hear David C. do Superstar. Or, even better, David A. — my favorite performance of his was “Shop Around,” way back on 60s night. His performances are boring because he’s 17 and lacks the emotional connection to the ballads, but he still has the best voice of the bunch.

Syesha not only had a great performance, her re-styling gave her a star quality look last night. C’mon people, give her her due and vote for her! Cook and Archie are locks, give them some competition.
Brooke and Jason have GOT to go, it’s becoming embarrassing for the show that they have made the final 6 in a singing competition.

I agree with Deidre Randy and Simon totally wimped out when they didn’t let Brooke have it for the starting and the stopping her song. Also, I did not like Carly’s version of Jesus Christ Superstar. Had it not been for the words I would not have recognized the song. It was so noisy. Why is it that when Randy and Simon give Syeesha a half azz compliment it’s always followed with a but…It amazes me how people repeat what the judges say like robots. Once Simon said Broadway was Syeesha’s niche now it’s been repeated several times on this blog. I’m afraid because of Brooke and Jason’s fan base they will be safe and Syeesha will go home.

I, too, could not believe how spot-on ALW was last night. He certainly did take his role of mentor to heart and really offered the best suggestions of any mentor in recent memory. Blew me away, actually. And, his treatment of Carly—recognizing her choice was wrong—Wow! When I heard about it yesterday, it sounded like he had come down on her, but it was a really heart-felt piece of advice. As much as I hate the mentors, this was one for the ages.

David Cook was fabulous and for the first time I liked Syesha’s performance. When I was watching I thought she’ll find a home on Broadway. David A has a great voice — my 15 year old loved what he did with his song — but I thought it was a bit boring. The others I didn’t really like at all. Carly sounded liked she was shouting so I left the room.
Either Brooke or Jason should leave, though I give Brooke credit for fighting through what appeared to be a tough song to memorize after her initial flub. Still, at this level of competition problems like that should not occur.

While Brooke did re-start her song because she forgot the lyric - she was correct when she said she hasn’t done that before. (forgotten a lyric) She re-started her song a month ago because she started singing in the wrong key. While still a fault - they are totally different. Unless you have perfect pitch, starting a song in the wrong key is definitely possible.
Also - David Cook kicked a$$! I’ve loved him since Top 24 week but - WOW! - it was so refreshing to hear him say that he grew up doing musical theater. He isn’t all bad boy - in fact - he knew who ALW was and knew just how huge it was to be able to meet and be mentored by him. His performance was just incredible. Thanks for posting the link, above, with his performance - I’ll check it again out when I get home from work. I can’t wait to download it!

Ok here’s the dialidol order(I’m doing this for a reason so stick with me.)
D. Cook D Archie Syesha Jason Brooke Carly
Last week KLC was deemed safe by dialidol. She was 4th from the bottom.
Two weeks ago Michael was deemed safe by every woman in America…he was 4th from the bottom.
This week Syesha is 4th from the bottom. I’m a little concerned for Syesha.

SHE WAS PLAYING THE PIANO WHEN SHE STARTED IN THE WRONG KEY!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean…(excuse the capital letters) but if she can’t give herself the right note to start WHO CAN????????
Amateurish! And would have been unacceptable if any other contestant had done it. Either time!

Dierdre, I hope that is wrong—about Syesha possibly being in danger. Last night she shone, and it would be a bad thing for her to go home before Jason or Brooke. I actually think Syesha is a very good singer. She finally had fun with a song and let her personality come through. Simon was right about that. She has,
