4/29: Top 5 Idol performance night with Neil Diamond & Paula’s (ahem) confusion

top5_neildiamond.JPG

(For you live bloggers, sorry, I was out late tonight and only got around to posting my thoughts at about midnight.)

Neil Diamond is not going to bring in that younger audience “Idol’ is losing, but he sure has written some great songs over the years. And thank God nobody chose his cheesiest song, the ode to “E.T.” “Heartlight.” Then again, check out “America,” courtesy of David Archuleta, trying to pull another Kristy Lee Cook (as if he needs it!)

In the end, it was a pretty scattershot night. There were more than a fair share of clunkers for this point in the competition, a couple of great performances and more proof that David Cook should take this home for consistency, professionalism and vocal skills. Sorry, Archuleta!

Who will be in trouble? Well, Archuleta is fine as usual. I’m not sure at this stage if they even do a bottom three. If it’s just a bottom two, I’d say Jason and Syesha. Jason is going home is my guess only because Syesha was lucky enough to get the pimp spot, even if it was a disappointing final performance.

Dialidol actually has Syesha in the safe zone! You have to wonder if Simon’s comments about her being in trouble helped her, especially since he said them moments before voting started. Jason, Brooke and David A. are in danger.

And let me explain poor Paula Abdul’s belief that Jason sang twice already during the halfway point. (SEE VIDEO) The thing is—she and the others watched the dress rehearsal, where she had seen both performances and had, paraphrasing Ryan, “seen the future.” Then she got confused during the actual performance show. This is no proof that “Idol” is rigged or her comments are scripted. She simply can’t remember what happened 15 minutes earlier versus two hours earlier! In other words, vintage Paula. But very amusing!

I suspect Simon spends a lot of time gabbing with Paula during the actual performances since they had already heard them during dress. That’s also possibly why, if a contestant did great in rehearsal and bombed during the live show or vice versa, the judges’ comments seem way way off. Paula should have immediately explained herself and said she had heard Jason sing earlier during dress. That would have helped 99.9% of the audience watching that has no clue this is the case.

Anyway, at this stage, order of performance probably is less meaningful now that each contestant has to sing twice, especially going first.

So this time, I will rank the 10 performances in order, rather than post them in order. I’ll include judge’s comments when available since they only really talked after the second song (not counting that strange mid-time interlude when Paula’s brain went haywire.)

1-David Cook (“All I Really Need is You”) - Honestly, at this point, it’s hard not to root for Cook to win because he infuses every song with heart. Even if this wasn’t as stellar a vocal performance as usual, his emotional compass keeps everything in check and makes it worth listening to. Randy: “Again, you rocked the house!” Paula: “I feel like I’m already looking at the American Idol.” Simon: “I thought the first song was okay, the second song brilliant.” (seventh performance) A/A-minus

2-Brooke White (“I Am I Said”) - She personalizes the lyrics to Arizona, courtesy of Neil’s suggestion. This is more like it, a song that fits her. Sure, as usual, her vocals are just okay but this is the Brooke we love. I really wanted to hear a longer version, a good sign. Randy: “Nice job.” Paula: “What you did as opposed to the first song. It shows your vulnerability and it works.” Simon: “I really really hated the first song. It was like girls’ night out for karaoke. This is the Brooke we like. It wasn’t incredible but a million times better than the first song. Well done.” (eighth performance) A-minus

3-Syesha Mercado (“Hello Again”) - She does a drop-dead gorgeous version of this rather pensive song, though her big smile doesn’t seem to jibe. I enjoyed it. (fifth performance) A-minus.

4- Jason Castro (“Forever in Blue Jeans”) - This is a nice laid-back song that fits Castro well. He seems more comfortable than he was last week. (Is it just me or is the mosh pit looking a bit thin tonight?). Vocally, the song isn’t much of a strain for him and he imprints it with that Castro vibe and it works well. (First performance) B-plus/A-minus

5-David Cook (“I’m Alive”) - He opted for two lesser-known songs, which is not a bad idea. (Second performance) He’s comfortable and luxuriates in his lower register with a professional sheen that includes just a hint of that Diamond growl. Another solid performance, nothing to complain about. (Second performance) B-plus

6-David Archuleta (“Sweet Caroline”) - David took Carly’s song. He starts the song in a higher key than Neil. In fact, the whole arrangement barely sounds like the original, which is sometimes good, sometimes not so good. This time: not so good. The problem is he really isn’t very good at upbeat (see Brooke White). He even hits a few bad notes. He ends okay, at least, but this won’t win him any new fans. (fourth performance) B-minus

7-Pimp spot! Syesha Mercado (“Thank God for the Night Time”) - Her vocals feel a bit mannered and Broadway for a song that could have used a bit more vocal grit. The actress in Syesha is very much in effect. It feels very staged. Randy: “You finally realize who you are. Could have been on Broadway.” Paula: “First song I thought that vulnerable side is absolutely beautiful. That’s your magic. Your second song shows your other side. That’s your theatrical side.” (She said she’s a cross of Corinne Bailey Rae and Minnie Ripperton.) Simon: “It’s a bit chaotic tonight. You demonstrated again. You’re a good actress -stroke- singer. I think however you may be in trouble tonight. It wasn’t a memorable second song like the others.” [I agree.] (10th performance) B-minus

8-David Archuleta (“America”) - Big mistake picking one of Neil’s cheesier songs and another upbeat song. He lacks the gravitas that makes this work with Neil. It feels lightweight. But hey, it’s patriotic and he gets to hit a final grace note with “let freedom ring” while an American flag plays behind you. Randy: “You are in the zone. Another great performance, baby.” (huh?) Paula: “This was the absolute perfect song for you to sing.” (wah?) Simon: “That was a smart choice of song.. that was clever. It ticked all the boxes.” (ninth performance ) B-minus

9-Brooke White (“I’m a Believer”) - This song requires a really strong voice and she simply doesn’t have it. When she bugs her eyes out, she looks fairly absurd. Why is Paula up there dancing? It’s weak but you gotta give her credit for trying something outside her norm. (third performance) C-plus

10-Jason Castro (“September Morn”) - Paula already said she wasn’t feeling this one (from the dress rehearsal.) Maybe the advance criticism will help him. It’s actually just kinda boring. He does it in really sleepy AC style. His voice sounds lazy and the entire thing feels phoned in. Bleh. Randy: “It was just okay.” Paula: “I felt safe. You need to get out of the comfort zone.” Simon: “We don’t recognize you at the moment. There was no attempt to make the songs your own. They were both forgettable.” (sixth peformance) C

In other “Idol” news:

-The EW power five shows minor shifts with David C. remaining at No.1, David A. back at No. 2, Jason dropping to No. 3, Brooke taking Carly’s spot at No. 4 and Syesha taking Brooke’s spot at No. 5. TV Guide had them ranked the same order with votes as follows: 55.8% for David Cook. 20.9% David Archuleta. 12.7% Jason Castro. 6.7% Brooke White. 3.8% Syesha Mercado. Gambling sites have Archuleta winning, with Cook a close second. The other three are also rans with Jason at 15-1 and both Brooke and Syesha at 20 to 1.

-Michael Johns told an Australian pub how surreal it was to be at the White House Correspondents Dinner this past Saturday.: “Condoleezza Rice came up and hugged me, asked to take a picture and have an autograph,” Johns told Confidential yesterday. “Rob Lowe demanded a recount, everyone thinks I was robbed.”

-I have a spare copy of Phil Stacey’s new CD if anybody wants it. Email me at rho@ajc.com. It comes out today!

-The Ruben/Frenchie Davis take on “Ain’t Misbehavin’” is scheduled to kick off its national tour Nov. 17, 2008 at the Fox Theatre.

-Paris Bennett is performing with her grandma Ann Nesby at the “Songs of Soul & Inspiration” concert at Philips Arena on my birthday, June 21. Patti Austin, Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adamas Queen Latifah and others are headlining.

-Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on “Dancing With the Stars,” notes that Paula Abdul might have problems if she joins the show:

“She’s [emotionally] fragile. And she’s had physical issues [a neck injury]. She won’t even realize how much pressure is on her until she’s already signed up and can’t get out,” Inaba tells TV Guide magazine (May 5 issue; hits newsstands Thursday, May 1). “I would hate to see her get hurt by something she loves.”

The following was posted on another site where game-playing is apparently important. Referring to Syesha’s choices. Take it as you will:

*I can’t reveal too much, but I know it to be one of these four combonations:

  1. “Hello Again” & “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime”
  2. “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime” & “You Don’t Send Me Flowers”
  3. “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show” & “September Morning”
  4. “Heartlight (Theme from E.T.)” & “Open Wide These Prison Doors”

So based on that list, you tell me which combination you think is the one for her (I don’t know the exact one, only that it’s definitely one on this list.)

And BTW, my guess is either 2 or 4.*

I’m pretty sure it isn’t the third choice since I’m also pretty sure Jason is singing September Morn.

The only thing that could be worse than 10 Neil Diamond songs would be listening to Brooke and Jason singing Neil Diamond songs. I’m going to follow Deirdre’s lead and have some Baileys, if that doesn’t do the trick I’ll start chugging mouth wash.

Sorry guys the spoiler network is failing tonight. This is all I’ve got thanks to mj. Spoiler Alert

* Jason Castro - “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “September Morn” - Joan, the reliable EW popwatch spoiler (check comments) left this hint: “A teeny hint for you spoiler lovers: Jason always dons durable twill weave when taking a stroll at dawn, when the foliage is dismounting.” * David Archuleta - “I’m a Believer”, “America” not enough concrete info to go with these choices yet… * Brooke White - “I Am I Said” at the piano - via Idol Forums message board * Syesha Mercado - According to a poster at the Idol Forums, Syesha’s 2 songs are one of the picks below. I’d go with #2.
  1. “Hello Again” & “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime”
  2. “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime” & “You Don’t Send Me Flowers”
  3. “Heartlight (Theme from E.T.)” & “Open Wide These Prison Doors”

    • David Cook - from person who spoiled Brooke “…He said he tried a bunch of better known songs and then went for more of an unknown song.” BTW, this poster claims to have gotten the spoilers straight from Neil Diamond. Normally, I’d be skeptical, but this person has spoiled successfully before and seems to have good connections.

I knew as soon as I posted the half-hearted spoilers, the reall ones would come up and here they are: Spoiler Alert

* Jason Castro - “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “September Morn” - * David Archuleta - “Sweet Caroline” and “America” * Brooke White - “I Am … I Said” at the piano and “I’m a Believer” * Syesha Mercado - “Hello Again” & “Thank the Lord for the Night Time” * David Cook - “I’m Alive”, “All I Ever Really Need is You”

I love reading all your postings but this is the first time I’ve logged on. First, I think if Brook wins, the therapists will have to work with some of you instead of her (just kidding!). That said, after tonight, as far as I’m concerned, let’s get rid of Archie. I started out as a fan but he is getting on my last nerve.

Yep…I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Looks like after tonight it WILL be the two Davids in the finale. I love DC, but I fear DA will win but it will be “gift” in the long run if DC doesn’t win. I think Jason is “outta here!”

Whew, I was reading a blog over at phillyburbs.com and these 2 guys said Paula Abdul should be thrown off American Idol. Yes, how come they let her come back and comment on the second half of the singers’ performances. If FOX allows her to remain as a judge am sure there will be future lawauits. C’mon, get wise execs, give her the boot! S D

I have David C and Seyesha in a tie tonight. None of the others matter to me at this point.

By Dennis Dodd

April 29, 2008 9:09 PM | Link to this

Finally, someone noticed the Paula Abdul catastrophe. Why did they let her judge the last half hour…that can’t be legal. If she isn’t kicked off the panel, I am sure, no, I am positive, that FOX will never hear the end of it, via these blogs and newsgroups, D D

By DawnH

April 29, 2008 9:12 PM | Link to this

My order: David C, Syesha, Archie, Brooke, then Jason. So, David C or Syesha will probably be going home this week! Paula is a bigger idiot than Ryan - WHAT WAS THAT! Did you hear the audience giggling? Archie was, umm, Archie. Did he even sing 2 different songs? Brooke and Jason… well, LOL.

By Deirdre

April 29, 2008 9:14 PM | Link to this

Well that was interesting!

First, some general comments. The absolute BEST part of the show tonight was the judges not speaking for a full 28 minutes!!!!!! THAT was delightful!

That being said….Paula jumped the shark tonight. When she started talking about Jason’s second song…. well, what can anyone say. She’s going to be explaining herself for months. I think we all know that she saw the dress rehearsal and was talking about that performance BUT, that was SO FAR over the top that it overshadowed the performances.

I’m going to list my preferences by each performance. In the next post……is that like when Ryan says…after the break? :-)

By boots

April 29, 2008 9:16 PM | Link to this

I went back and watched it twice to make sure, but Paula called Syesha “Brooke” during the second round of comments. Seriously, she needs to go in to detox or something. We could make her the receipiant of next year’s American Idol Gives Back donations - Clean-up Paula!

By DawnH

April 29, 2008 9:18 PM | Link to this

OK, Sammy and Dennis. I’m sorry to be so stupid, but I don’t understand the legal implications of Paula’s faux pax. Would someone explain it to me. I agree it was stupid and embarrasing, but what are the legal implications?

Idol wasn’t so bad tonight, except for long hair Jason. Hopefully, since he was first, tomorrow he will be history. One can only hope. Thought the rest was good. Brooke was great on her last song, I am…I Said. Thought she really performed well tonight. Both Davids sounded good. Syesha rocked on her first round, not so good on the second. Bottom two: Jason and Syesha. I say Syesha b/c of her last performance. Has she always performed without her shoes or have I just missed it? For the last several weeks, she has not worn shoes. Just wondering about that.

So it’s true! Tonight proved it. Reality shows are never really reality. Paula proved that tonight with her prewritten notes for 1st and 2nd songs when Jason had only sung the first song. It doesn’t matter if they fire Paula or not…American Idol is busted. They decide far ahead who they want to win and try to persuade America to follow. Shame on them. No more validation for American Idol.
Actually, Jason is sincere and good. He is has charisma and talent. American Idol can’t truely stop who America wants.

Tonight was a perfect example of what can happen when the contestants have absolutely brilliant material to choose from. Niel Diamond is one of the greatest song writers of the last 50 years, and every thing he has written is melodic and listenable. 1. David Cook - I’m Alive - While there have been some outstanding performances already this season, this was the first time I thought to myself “I would buy a CD with this song on it”. This performance had #1 hit written all over it. Outstanding!

  1. David Archuletta - America - Simon hit it on the head when he said this was a perfect song choice. David sang it brilliantly, and for the first time in a while I was feeling some love for Monchichi.

  2. Syesha Mercado - Thank the Lord for the Nighttime - OK who else was getting a major Martha Reeves/Diana Ross vibe from this. Syesha has found her comfort zone. When she has fun and just sings she is brilliant. Hopefully the last couple weeks have taught her to stay away from the POWER songs and just let her beautiful voice entertain us.

  3. Syesha Mercado - Hello Again - Another vocal masterpiece by this young lady. She is so wonderful when she just sings.

  4. David Cook - All I Really Need is You - This was another excellent DC performance. Not amazing, but very very good.

  5. Brooke White - I am, I said - Finally Brooke is back behind the piano and the whole Carly Simon/Carole King sweetheart I fell in love with is back. Very pleasant.

  6. Jason Castro - Forever in Blue Jeans - This was a nice solid Jason performance. But as usual it was nothing spectacular, just nice easy listening background music.

  7. David Archuletta - Sweet Caroline - Ok, Monchichi has a great voice, and he sounded great on this song, but I absolutely HATED the arrangement, and it ruined a good vocal performance.

  8. Brooke White - I’m A Believer - KARAOKE with a capitol K.

  9. Jason Castro - September Morn - ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.. huh? What? it’s over? THANK GOD!

Overall ratings - David Cook, Syesha Mercado, David Archuletta, Brooke White, Jason Castro.

Who should go - Dread boy Jason. He has a nice voice, but c’mon he is not anywhere near the class of the rest of the field.

Who Will Go - Brooke most likely. Jason has all the “oh look at those dreamy eyes” brain dead morons voting for him, so I have to say I think Brooke may be in serious trouble. Although Simon was right, Syesha needs to worry for no other reason than the voting weakness she has shown all year.

One: David Cook All I Really Need is You. So good and he was so smart to pick a lesser known song.

Two: Syesha Thank the Lord for the Night Time. If this girl doesn’t make it to 3 place the the world has gone wacko…she has a much better voice than Brooke and Jason.

Three: David Cook, I’m Alive

Four: Syesha, Hello Again…this was SO pretty

Five: Archie, Coming to America…he pulled the Kristy Lee card but it doesn’t really matter one way or another…he could have sung the phone book and he’d still be in the finals.

Six: Archie, Sweet Carolina…again a very nice job…but here’s my problem with Archie…he’s got that soft voice….it’s foggy but not in a good way like Mel Torme or Ruben Studdard. I like his clear voice much better but he can only haul that out for the loud, high notes. He’s a nice kid and a good singer but…no!

Seven: Brooke, I Am..I Said. She did an almost decent job with this.

Eight: Jason, September Morn….In this case, the song carried him but he didn’t get it.

Nine: Jason, Forever in Blue Jeans..I HATE it when he does the squeaky voice….and look at him…he doesn’t care!!!!!

Ten: Brooke, I’m a Believer…she started this too low so she could hit the money notes at the end but the money notes were such a small part of the song that she ruined the rest of it…a disaster, IMO.

AHHH!

I felt so rushed tonight it was unbelievable.

  1. Jason Castro, 1st song: I think he did ok, having said that, not good enough. Paula said she thought he sang 2 songs? Well maybe she was considering rehearsals. If not- LMAO! If so, man they need to be careful.

2nd song: boring, boring, boring. Unfortunately the little girlies will keep him in. Maaaaaan. It is totally his time to go. “I was choking in the beginning” So? I felt bad because he sounded sad but yanno what? even if you weren’t choked up, you were still bad.

  1. David Cook, 1st song: It was alright. He still did pretty good as Randy would say All things considered.

2nd song: Fantastic. His best, vocally at least. All said, he zooms through.

  1. Brooke White, 1st song: It wasn’t bad. But it was a weird choice.

2nd song: Sounded like all her others, but vocally it wasn’t bad. She’s just ok though…and the weird sounds her voice makes shows she doesn’t quite have the vocal strength.

  1. David Archuleta, 1st song: True, amateurish.

2nd song: Better, but hm… I don’t know I guess it was ok. One thing I must say though is… that crack in his voice midway through, the judges didn’t point that out AT ALL. Now honestly, if Syesha did that, the judges would really call her out on it and you know it. Whatever.. he was good. Good needs to be great though, and great is where the other David is.

  1. Syesha Mercado, 1st song: Beautiful job, won the first round by a mile, judges wouldn’t even point that out. I just wish she had chosen another song. It took me right back to “Yesterday”, though, I was drawn right in.

2nd song: Started out incredibly weak, but then she got into it and really showed power out of that thing. Mark my words please: the judges, esp. Simon, is WAAAAY too hard on this girl. She is so much better than 2 or 3 that are left. Please don’t fill the top 4 with both Brooke and Jason. Anyway, I liked this song and she showed personality again. As I’ve said all along, she’s really the only one who looks and acts like a star out there. I hope she moves on. And oh boy Simon’s famous words: Trouble tonight. That shows he really still wants Jason to stay. Shame.

So, dialidol has safety now for Syesha, yet, I think they’ll throw her in for old times sake (in the bottom 2 that is).

Other person in bottom 2, either Jason or Brooke…

going home: eh, don’t know, syesha :(

OK..before everyone starts screaming that Paula proved the show was fake….Paula obviously made notes from the dress rehearsal and then, either because she’s a total idiot or she’s even higher on a controlled substance than we EVER suspected, she FORGOT that the show was only half over.

I like to believe the best about people but I think Paula numbered the singers 1-5 and didn’t name them in her notes and Ryan rushed the judges so much she got confused. Also at the first of the show Ryan said the judges would save comments until after the 5 sang their 2nd song so being on live tv and being rushed and having to come up with a quick comment on all 5 for two songs would be confusing. And what “can’t be legal?”

So what if your opinion is quote “brain dead morons voting for him” speaking of Jason…he is actually a good person…you can see it in his eyes… and talented and draws people in. Brook has the look of a mean streak and the look of being controlling…you can see that in her eyes. Charisma does have something to do with wanting to see someone on stage when they perform…

Also I think Paula made notes during the show…not pre-written. Why do we have to make judgments? David A. didn’t get the lyrics right on the first song and no one said anything. Neil Diamond is a great singer/songwriter and still handsome and romantic as ever.

sb…I’m sure Paula is a nice lady and it was probably very smart of her to make notes on the performances during the dress rehearsal…however, she’s scattered, unfocused, easily distracted, and she totally messed up tonight. When you add that to all the other ‘little goofs’ that she’s made during the course of the show, it becomes a comedy of errors and makes her a laughing stock.

Just get rid of Paula and the show will improve.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. I thought David C and Syesha were the best followed closely by David A, whose act is wearing thin on me. Jason and Brooke were easily the worst and hopefully one of them will go. I’ll vote for Jason to leave because at least Brooke is trying.

1- David Cook - All I Really Need is You. WOW!!!

2a- Syesha - Thank the Lord for the Night Time. Great job!

2b- David A. - Sweet Caroline - He finally displayed some of the energetic fun he’s been ripped for not having, and I thought the result was one of his best. It was not perfect, and therefore it was better than if it had been.

3a- David C. - I’m Alive - This guy is making me really like Neil Diamond songs. Who knew?

3b- Syesha - Hello - Just beautiful.

4- David A. - America - Very good, but less confident IMO because of the slight voice crack partway through.

5- Brooke - I Am, I Said - Neil Diamond music is so her.

6- Jason - Forever In Blue Jeans - Not his worst; not terrible.

7- Jason - September Morn - The obviousness of him not caring even managed to pi$$ Paula off.

8- Brooke - I’m a Believer - Excruciating.

I’m a huge Neil Diamond fan from the start, hence the name. Based on tonight’s show only: 1. David Cook 2. Syesha Mercado 3. Brooke White 4. David Archuleta 5. Jason Castro

Granted America is too big to be done in 90 seconds but I’m sorry these songs demand emotion. Sweet Caroline needs something other than a choir boy. Jason chose safe but blah. He needs to go.

Paula needs a driver to Betty Ford.

Forgot to post my rank!!

1 and 2. Syesha and David. Tied, just b/c one of their performances I liked better than their other, and they both shined tonight. Once again Syesha didn’t get the praise she so deserves.

  1. David Archuleta- still a bit boring, i hope he can get past that.

  2. Brooke White- just not good enough.

  3. Jason Castro- Read above. Need I say more?

Clear bottom 2 shooooould be: Brooke and Jason…

Not quite sure who I want to go home, well yes, Jason, but it is interchangeable.

I want Brooke to go home, because I want Syesha to definitely be the top girl in this thing.

I want Jason to go home because I think it’d be harder for Brooke to make top 3 than it would for Jason, and I want Syesha there…! So hopefully Jason is outski.

Doubt it though…

And.. Though syesha is deservedly on top of dialidol, i’m sure the west coast will get cook and archuleta back above her…hence the reason they’ll throw her in the bottom 2 again.

I liked the show tonight. The focus was on the singers…not the judges…not Ryan. It may have been fast…it may have been rushed but it was ABOUT the singing!

By Negativo

April 29, 2008 10:45 PM | Link to this

Neg’s take:

1. David Cook: 8/10 on the first song, 9/10 on the second. Total points: 17.

He was again just awesome tonight, and shows why everyone else is playing for runner up. His grit combined with a touch of softness is a hard combo to beat, and I’m convinced he is the next American Idol.

2. Sayesha: 8/10 on the first, 9/10 on the second. Total points: 17.

She was awesome tonight, especially the second number where she had the backup singers on stage with her. Simon had nothing but bad things to say about her once again because apparently he doesn’t like her and wants her to go away. The rest of us who have a brain saw a girl who showed why she is here and Carly went home: she figured out how to sing pretty and strong but not over-reach beyond her range. If she goes home this week I will be seriously p** off.

3. Brooke: 3/10 first song, 7/10 second. Total points: 10.

First song was so bad I couldn’t decide if I was watching comedy or tragedy. Pitiful. 2nd song was good but not great.

4. Archuletta: 4/10 first song, 4/10 second. I think I finally know what I dislike about him most now: He is simply not a good singer or a good performer. He has no vocal range at all, is monotone, and offers nothing except little boy cuteness. His droning, irritating, breathy voice is hard on the ears and he just bounces around in place on stage with no emotion or clue at all. Double disaster.

5. Jason Castro: 4/10 first song, 3/10 second.

Q. How long can someone who can only whisper elevator music stay on idol? A. As long as idiot females under the age of 21 keep voting for him because he’s so dreamy. Just another sorry display, but still not as bad as his abysmal ukalele night from a month ago.

My prediction for bottom 2: Brooke and Sayesha. Going home: Sayesha.

Should be going home: Paula, for giving her opinion of Jason’s second song before he even friggin’ sang it! She should seriously be fired for that.

I will buy anything David Cook, Archie or Syesha record. I cannot imagine buying anything by Broke or Jason, and come on folks. There are folks in local kareoke lounges that sing and emote as well as he does. The guy is sub-talented. Broke is also a one-octave singer and will bore the tears off anyone’s face. Stop voting for these marginally talented people. You can’t watch a CD.

Loved DC as usual; he is the only one of the contestants whose album I’ll buy. Brooke was better than last week with her second song, though that didn’t take much.

Simon assured Syesha of staying around with his comment about her being in danger of going home. That was very staged and apparently it worked if you look at the Dial Idol stats.

I think Brooke or Jason will go home.

Morning mushblogians!

Dialidol is a sight to behold this morning. Not only do they have Syesha in 1st place but…Archie is listed as ‘in danger’!!!!!!

An obvious effort was made by the fans last night to save Syesha which tells me that the adults are starting to take over the zoo. Why Jason and Brooke are still standing while the likes of Carly, Michael and yes, Kristy Lee are sitting at home watching is beyond me.

For the first time this season, I’m hoping that dialidol got it absolutely right!

By Negativo

DialIdol cannot be trusted at all, D. They don’t count the text messages, of which 90% go to DA and none to Sayesha.

BTW, we for the first time all year voted repeatedly last night (for her and DC), so hopefully that’s a sign that grown ups are indeed starting to “take over the zoo”, as you stated.

One more thing. Sayesha deserves every vote she gets. She was leaps and bounds better than the putrid trio of Jason, Arch and Brooke.

Good morning all! I’m at home today, waiting for the heating & air guys to get here to install new units - OUCH $$$. Please feel free to send in your donations! :)

Paula is obviously on something. Her behavior is at the very least awkward every show. What is with the jumping up and dancing - she reminds me of the Travelocity gnome. I think she is still trying to audition for DWTS. Which, by the way, I saw Def Leppard perform - I love Def Leppard! Of course, I love Neil Diamond too, so everyone ignore the gag reflex and stop laughing at me!

I don’t believe MJ should have gone; I don’t believe Carly should have gone. But I am still surprised that people are still saying Kristy Lee should still be there. Someone needs to explain her appeal to me (other than the obvious - duh). Her voice was just OK - not bad, not outstanding, and certainly Syesha and Carly were far better. She had no personality whatsoever, unless she was just insulting the judges after her performance. People are saying she would do well in country music. I love country music, and if she came on my radio, I would change the channel. I would certainly never buy a CD. I just don’t get it from a talent perspective.

I agree that for whatever reason Syesha can’t get a break from the judges. She is a good singer, and with the right song, a good performer. It doesn’t matter how well she does, it is alway unmemorable or just all right. Huh?

Good morning. I am so happy to read this morning that other folks reacted to Simon’s criticism of Syesha and voted multiple times for her. I did the same thing. I kept on voting until 11:00 PM, too. Of course, I always vote for DC, but it upset me to think that she might be in trouble, when Jason was so awful and might stay. Hopefully, you are all right about the adults taking over. I,for one, do not want to sit by and see another talented contestant go home, at the expense of a less talented one.

Did not think much of Neil Diamond’s mentoring. Maybe they cut out the “good” suggestions, but to me, he said almost the exact same thing about each contestant—unlike last week’s excellent ALW.

I’m starting to believe that David A’s family must have some blackmail material on the judges. He was so karaoke last night and yet they fell all over themselves praising him. He has a great voice but he lacks star appeal and everything he sings is starting to sound the same. Syeesha can’t catch a break. She was clearly the best in the first round but Simon said she was old fashion. What? these songs were out before she was born. After sitting through a lot of mess, he had the nerve to single her out and say she was in trouble. This show is such a joke. If she leaves tonight they will lose a lot of viewers because the only one left to hold anybodys interest is David Cook

By Lara

April 30, 2008 8:56 AM | Link to this

What a night. First off, the Paula incident. Well, they changed the format on her after how many years? Most people would be confused in that situation. Plus, we all know they watch dress rehearsals and make their comments based on those performances – how could she ever watch the real ones with Simon always touching her and talking to her? I feel like I have to defend her like a little puppy or something. Poor Paula.

Now, I didn’t take notes, and I am not going to rank them. What I will say is DAVID COOK RULES!!! I loved the comment that Simon made about him picking 2 very obscure Neil Diamond songs and making them current – they could be on the radio today. I think that may have been a little dig at Monchichi as he picked Mr. Diamond’s 2 most famous songs ever!!! YEAH!!!

Second to David, I think that Syeshia had a good night. But couldn’t she find a pair of shoes by her 2nd song? I still think she may lack one thing, with a beautiful voice, she still just doesn’t connect. I don’t think she knows whether she should look into the camera or into the audience. She seems a bit removed – just my opinion.

The other 3 are bringing up the bottom at the same rate for me. Brooke was just awful. She is really a one-trick pony. The girl cannot sing an upbeat song, and sure can’t perform without hiding behind an instrument. Just painful. Jason was just boring, man, I could fall asleep to that stuff! Someone should prescribe a Jason Castro cd to all those insomniacs!!! And boy did he end with a bad note on September Morn – I think he is giving up.

Now Archie really got on my nerves last night!!! The kid already annoyed me, and now I wish he would just go away. Sweet Caroline…come on now…and then Coming to America. I believe I had a discussion with someone the other day on how this song would be a great group sing – and this boy just had to pick it (using the Kristi Lee Cook card, maybe?). He changed the tunes, and not for the better – and boy, he hit some AGH notes as well. His performance was just way too cheesy for words (although I have used a lot here, I am sure someone will complain about the length of my post, hee hee). I really hope he is going home – or at least in the bottom 2 – he needs to get a little nervous!!

At this point any one of the 3-headed monster known as Castrobrookletta can go and I’ll be happy. Brooke at least is pretty good on the piano sometimes, but they suck all the time.

Just keep DC and Sayesha alive this week and there will be no problems.

Flats - Syesha did make the top 5, but she did it with very little support from the judges (other than Paula saying she looks nice). Her performance is either not good, not memorable, or just OK. On the other hand, the judges treat Brooke, who consistently is sub-par, with kitt gloves. Of course, I am sure her delicate emotional state plays a part in that. She seemed OK last night - apparently the medication is working.

Flats, I agree with you on most points. I do agree - Brooke simply sucks. I think Syesha has a good voice, I just don’t think it works well for AI. I believe she could be very successful on Broadway.

As for this season of AI being touted as the best group of contestants ever - B/S. They were all mediocre from the get-go. DC has been the most consistent and has always been the most talented. MJ seemed to find his niche before he left.

The Braves… well, I hear Smoltz is hurt, yet again. As for that other pitcher who hasn’t played in 4 years and still gets paid, I would make him the water boy. If I was paying him that kind of money, he would be working for me in some capacity! Chipper may be hot, but the first time he breaks a nail, he will be on the disabled list. I would put him in a pair of silk panties and a skirt. I go to every Braves home game on the weekends, and usually it is just painful. I also think if the pitcher thinks he is going to walk a batter, he should hit him! If you are going to get a free pass to first base from me, you’re going to do it limping!

Agree, JT! I think Simon did it on purpose. She pretty clearly outsang at least 3 other contestants so…either Simon was ‘experimenting’ with his power or he’s as loony as Paula.

Fire Paula! What an idiot. I voted for Syesha and David C. and I hope Archie does goe home followed by Brooke and Castro.

LOL D….or both?

Syesha has a beautiful voice when she isn’t trying to sing “big” (i.e., screaming) … and regardless of how she does on AI, i think there’s definitely a broaday/musical theatre future for her… she may have to start “off broadway” or with touring companies, but i think she has the “stuff” to make it big eventually. But then, both Jennifer and Fantasia made huge jumps, lol, so who knows!

Syesha has the looks, the acting talent (so far as i have seen it) and a beautiful voice. she’ll be fine. I DO agree, however, with the assessment that she hasn’t QUITE found her point of connection with the “world”.

Brooke, on the other hand, has a beautiful voice and style, but it’s extremely limited in scope and appeal.

Cook, on the other hand, has grown from the sort of awkward looking guy to quite a performer in both style and performance. He’s a winner, whether he wins the SHOW or not.

Archie…has reached his adolescent limitations. After his voice completely changes and he matures (IF dad lets him) he may turn out to be quite a nice singer. THink Andy Williams

Another lurker emerging from the shadows, at least for the moment. Saw very little of the show last night (life intruded) but David A was horrible on Sweet Caroline. I felt myself cringing at times.

Main reason for my post—-What is it with the new national sport called Paula bashing? Up front, I admit I’m biased, been a fan of hers since wayyyyy back in the 80’s. But, with all that she’s gone through, the physical injuries, the addictions (which she obviously is still battling), to remain as positive as she is, I absolutely admire her and wish only the best for her. She should be offered a hand up, not the back of a hand.

Reminds me of the old saying when I was a kid (and that’s even further back in time)—-“Why don’t you pick on somebody your own size?”

And please save any and all bile directed
