5/5: Kellie PIckler at Etowah High School

kellie-pickler-08-arm-up.JPG

kellie-pickler-etowah-high.JPG

Kellie Pickler did graduate high school. (Really!) But she readily admits: “I’m no role model.”

Dr. Kellie Pickler or attorney Kellie Pickler doesn’t quite sound as apropos as country singer Kellie Pickler. And she’s built an impressive fan base - especially at Etowah High School in Woodstock.

kellie-pickler-08-rodney.JPG

ABOVE: She’s indeed a tiny gal, even compared to me!

And for kicks, Kicks 101.5 and her record label at Sony BMG took an idea that worked in Philadelphia: kids from the high school who sent the most text messages got a free concert from said Pickler.

kellie-pickler-principal.JPG

Etowah High School principal Ron Dunnavant heard from his brother that Etowah a few weeks back was in third place in the contest. So he went on the P.A. system that Monday and told kids to push them to No. 1. He wanted to celebrate a great year in which Etowah was named a “School of Excellence” by the state, one of only four schools this year.

kellie-pickler-08 cole.JPG

His students did not disappoint. They ended up texting more than 500,000 times, averaged out to 227 per student. Junior Cole Arnold (right), a Pickler fan, contributed 120,000 all by himself by hooking his phone up to automated text messaging software for an entire week. Overall, metro Atlantans sent a whopping 2 millon texts (more than doubling Philly.)

“It’s like American Idol all over again!” she said.

kellie-pickler-08-t-shirt.JPG

Originally set up as an acoustic set in the gym, the label was so impressed by the response, they drove from Nashville an entire band and set the concert up in the football field for 4,000 Etowah middle and high school students.

kellie-pickler-side-view.JPG

kellie-pickler-08-pointing.JPG

With a sea of posters (including “I love Kellie like a stalker” and another shaped like a pickle with her head on it), she sang for 40 minutes, including a couple of new tunes and she even teared up after “I Wonder.” “I feel like I’m singing to my peers,” said Kellie, who graduated in 2004. The cheerleaders presented her an Etowah Eagles football jersey, a megaphone with her name emblazoned on it, plus a yearbook signed by hundreds of students.

kellie-pickler-08-jersey.JPG

Pickler has been running almost nonstop for two years. The sixth place “Idol” finisher was the first one out of the box with a CD before anybody else from the Class of 2006. After the show and the tour, she began promoting her album with a radio tour that led her to a Douglasville mall. She generated three top 20 hits over the next 18 months with almost nonstop touring, including stints opening for Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts. She has sold more than 740,000 albums, more than Taylor Hicks and all the other Class of ‘06ers except Daughtry.

I spoke with her for a few minutes in the media center. (I guess they don’t call them libraries anymore.).

Do you text message?

I’m not a very big phone person. I’m not carrying it around. But I’d rather text than to talk to people on the phone!

Why aren’t you a big phone person?

I’m around people all day long. I like my space where I don’t have to be talking all the time. It’s important to have me time.

What phone do you have?

I have an iPhone. I go through phones like people change their clothes. I probably have had every phone out there. I’ve had four a Blackberry, I had a Pearl I dropped down four flights of stairs. I had a World phone on the USO tour. Pretty much blew that up. And I dropped an iPhone into the commode at a Cheesecake Factory. Luckily, it was before I used the bathroom!

kellie-pickler-08-in camera.JPG

I saw you opening for Rascal Flatts a few months ago and you cried after singing “I Wonder.” (the autobiographical song about her mom, whom she is estranged.) How often does that happen?

Every once in awhile it really hits me. It’s such an emotional song. It’s so personal yet I’m doing it in front of thousands of people. It becomes overwhelming. I can put the microphone down and hear everyone singing the song. You look into the crowd and see a mom holding her child, a little girl. That gets me sometimes.

You handling this whirlwind life okay so far?

It’s just crazy! The whole thing is sort of surreal. It becomes overwhelming constantly on the go. It’s very rare for me to slow down and absorb everything, the whole experience and the atmosphere. Sometimes, after a show, I have to lay down in bed and tell myself to slow down. I’m still adrenalized, still pumped from getting off the stage. I think, ‘Am I really doing this?’ This is what I wanted since I was a little girl.

kellie-pickler-08-red-high-heels.JPG

ABOVE: Yup, she does have to wear red high heels, in tribute to her breakthrough song.

How was the USO tour?

It was amazing. I knew Toby Keith had done it. It was an incredible learning experience, really eye opening. It just makes you appreciate your life. You learn not to take even small things for granted.

What’s your favorite moment with a soldier?

There’s this song on my record, “Small Town Girl.” It’s actually one of the first songs I ever wrote about my hometown [Albermarle, N.C.] I had one soldier say when I sung that, he closed his eyes and it felt like he was back home. That was one of the coolest things someone ever said to me. It motivated me to want to go back.

So are you still getting flak for not knowing your European countries on “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”

I have ot say I’ll have to tell these students to pay attention in class or you’ll look like a dumb*ss on television. But I don’t know anybody but a handful of people who knew that Budapest was the capital of Hungary. A lot of people won’t admit it but I was honest. I say what I think!

Are you touring this summer or working on a new album?

I’m doing both. I’m hitting some fairs and festivals. I’m doing a fair with Kid Rock in South Dakota. Hopefully nobody hits me over the head with a pool stick!

[Someone then said, “Don’t join him in a Waffle House!” Not sure if she got that!]

Finally, what’s on your iPod?

I can’t get mine to work. I’m computer illiterate. I do listen to CDs. I love Dolly Parton and Fergie. I love John Mayer. He’s one of my favorites. Keith, Kenny.

Rodney is my hero. I’m serious, and I wasn’t even a Pickler fan when she was on Idol. Aside from the pictures, you have the material there for a good print article.

Holy heels. I just don’t understand how girls walk in those things…

So I’m kinda thinking Syesha is going home this week — because — … I have seen plans of Jason, and both of the David’s homecomings for top 3. And nothing for Syesha. So is it just irony, or is Syesha’s not planned b/c she is going home?

Harm… probably, but i almost hope not. She’s so alive! And works so darned HARD! If by some chance she’s saved by votes, who would you think might be the second “choice” to go? Just out of curiosity.

BTW, D, if you see this… i just finished watching the last week episode! woooooohooooo! i’m caught up! well … as much as one CAN be. I guess this hints at an explanation of why Aaron is with Kate and Jack instead of Claire… however, it does hint at, as you said… does Jack know that Claire is his half-sister? and thus, Aaron his nephew. Did ‘dad’ spirit Claire away so Jack would be with Kate and Aaron, an attempt to make up for ‘past sins’? ahhhhh the questions! but my question is this…. do they REALLY get off the island, or are they having flashforwards of what COULD happen if they actually leave at least, at this time…

stay tuned… you will get more Lost … after the break!

I’m sure we’re all perfectly capable of turning any thread into a Lost thread and I can tell you that Rodney is a fan as well.

linny….I noticed that Jack told Kate about Aaron…”you aren’t even related!” Is that because he knows he is? And why wouldn’t Jack visit Kate after the trial? Did their engagement happen before the trial or after? I’m kinda ‘lost’ there. I’m thinking before the trial because he was already starting to fall apart a little at the trial(seeing your dead father can do that to you)

It makes my head spin but I guess I like a spinning head! :-)

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 6, 2008 9:24 AM | Link to this

D, i think that the engagement happened AFTER the trial … remember in the last episode, when he was looking at some guy’s exrays in the middle of the night… heard the smoke alarm beeping and saw dad…and the other doc came out… he said something about being engaged… and there was also when he went to see Hugo … he told him that he got involved with Kate “after the trial” … and Kate said during the days of the full beard, right after the trial, that there would be no “them having coffee” until he was ready to see and accept “her son”.

my question is… when he went to the funeral home, i assume it was kate’s mom who died. he was full-beard then. when, and why, did he clean up and become okay again in the hospital? cuz he sure wasn’t at the full-beard time.

aaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!!!!

Who was in the casket is one of Lost’s big questions right now!

Kate’s mom is a good guess.

By Deirdre

May 6, 2008 9:51 AM | Link to this

Lost is now getting into the idea that ‘time’ on the island is different than time anywhere else…..so far, it looks like time on the island goes MUCH slower than time on the freighter(Sayid and Desmond seem to take days to reach the freighter)…and then at other times, it seems that time on the island moves much faster than time on the freighter.(the freighter doc washes ashore dead but communications with the freighter say he’s fine) So confusing!

By War Eagle

May 6, 2008 9:55 AM | Link to this

The body in the casket is a man.

Here is the Newspaper Death Notice Transcribed:

“The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.

Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim’s loft.

Concerned for tenants’ safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room.

According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son.

Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening.”

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 6, 2008 10:07 AM | Link to this

Huh? WE where’d you get that? I never saw the funeral notice close up. and why would kate have gone to his funeral? who was he? the only funeral i can think of she’d go to would have been her mother’s…but WAIT…Jack was full-beard at the time of the funeral, the bridge crash, meeting kate outside the airport. kate’s mom was there for the trial, so no, it couldn’t be the mom. who’s John Lantham? !!!

By Deirdre

May 6, 2008 10:17 AM | Link to this

linny..Kate never went to the funeral..remember…when Jack shows up at the funeral home the director says no one else came…John Lanthum is probably a fake name since, from the notice…the guy could easily have been Michael(he was not part of the O6 so he must have been living under a fake name and he would have a teen son)

I pulled up a timeline for the ‘away from the island events. I’ll put it in the next post.

By War Eagle

May 6, 2008 10:21 AM | Link to this

Here is where I got it Linny. The trick to “Lost” is that there is no possible way anyone can take it all in by watching only once. So there are people that have too much time on their hands that disect the episodes.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 6, 2008 10:25 AM | Link to this

ok — i see where you get that… there was a lot of speculation at the end of Season 3 apparently that this might be Ben, Locke, Sawyer, or even Michael.

The question is: Why would Jack cry out on the bridge “don’t leave me Kate” because of the article in his hand????

flats it’s because we’re Lost, hon. don’t worry about it. just go with the flow!!!

By Deirdre

May 6, 2008 10:27 AM | Link to this

Here’s the timeline for off-island.

Between Dec 2004 and Summer 2005: O6 leaves the island.

Summer 2005: Sun gives birth Hurley visits her and they go to Jin’s grave.

Oct. 2005: Sayid’s wife Nadia is shot and killed in LA. Ben makes contact with Sayid and recruits him as an assassin.

Between 2005 and August 2007: Hurley gets commited after seeing Charlie in a convenience store. Jack visits Hurley who tells Jack “I think it wants us back” Jack says they’ll NEVER go back. Kate’s trial takes place.

Aug. 07: Jack and Kate are living together. Become engaged. Jack leaves when he finds out Kate is doing a favor for Sawyer.

Sept.07: Jack sees a funeral notice in a paper while flying. Jack tries to jump off bridge but ends up saving a family. Addicted Jack meets Kate at the airport screaming We Have to go back!!!

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 6, 2008 10:28 AM | Link to this

WE i saw that one after i asked my question, LOL…went and looked for myself. But STILL … why would (except possibly for Sawyer) anyone’s death cause Jack to cry out that way? and to wonder why Kate had not been to the funeral, to which she replied “why would she want to go” or some such (i don’t remember the exact words, but i DO have it on DVD so i Could go back and look!!!)

spoiler comment i don’t think either of those are particularly compelling, regarding Jason’s choices. But then, it seems that nothing Jason does is compelling these days! shrug

How about Mr. Widmore, if it’s in ‘07 … D thanks for that timeline, it makes a bit more sense… so the conversation between Jack and Kate where he says he WON’T go to her place is AFTER they were engaged (which was after the trial, i’m absolutely certain of that, that when he saw Hurley, H said “so you’re living with kate and aaron, when did that happen” and J said “after the trial”)… so full-beard jack is like 2007, the clean-shaven ‘future’ jack is right after they came home—are you SURE they were still living together/got engaged just 1 month before the bridge incident? because Jack said he’d been flying every weekend to anywhere hoping for a crash… and was now addicted, implying the breakup with Kate had something to do with his state of mind, in addition to seeing his dad and all that stuff… when was the trial?

i need to go back and watch, LOL and see if i can pick up dates… or find a Lost Geek so s/he can update me on all the little stuff, LOL!!!

By Deirdre

May 6, 2008 12:23 PM | Link to this

harrietth…his voice was better then, too.(during Star Search) That was before the paralyzed vocal fold incident. His voice, IMO, isn’t as good now as it was then.

linny, the Lost time line was from a Lost geek site. Kate and Jack were living together sometime AFTER her trial but no one is sure exactly when the trial happened. Other dates are taken from newspapers. For example, Jack has a newspaper with a ‘Red Sox beat Yankees’ headline and a year visible.

The Lost geeks apparently do a lot of freeze framing to catch all this stuff.

How ‘bout on FRIDAY, after Lost, we can talk about Lost all we want, and dolfin will know that we’re doin’ it and can take that day off???

LOL….well it was JUST a thought…fridays are usually sort of boring anyway…. and heck, season’s almost sigh over anywho, for BOTH shows!

Jason BETTER be singing Tambourine Man at the end of the results show — but after he is voted off!

There is speculation that one of Archie’s songs is Stand By Me.

Back in my day (1986) we didn’t have fancy text messaging … All we had were index cards, pens and pencils.

And we spent our time writing “I want Z-93 to bring the Bangles to North Cobb” We wrote that 1,600,000 times and Z-93 did bring the Bangles to North Cobb. Heck, even 2nd place had over 900,000 index cards.

What’s with these lazy kids today, it only took 500,000 text message to win this thing. That’s pathetic.

Spoiler Alert

Same person who is claiming Stand By Me for Archie says he will also sing Love Me Tender.

D, if Archie sings those songs, it will be his most boring performance to date, IMO. Both are songs that do not have the potential to make an artist shine. They are too laid back. And, not even up to the other ballads he has done in the past. What is wrong with these people? Out of the hundreds of songs, these emerge? Jason, too. I still say Archie would have excelled at a Stevie tune.

These spoilers could all be a bunch of hoo-haw, harrietth…..although the Jason spoilers came from a reliable and usually accurate source.

Warrior, back in my day we didn’t have no fancy index cards, pens, or pencils. All we had were wood and rock!! We wanted the Caveman 5 to come play in our village so we had to send smoke signals for 8 straight days 2nd place had their signal go out after 5, but not us.

Those lazy upstarts with them darn index cards don’t know how good they got it.
