5/7: Whoa! Jason is (finally) gone! Idol top 4 elimination show, slipping ratings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Has anybody been more relieved to be leaving “Idol”? Probably not!
Jason Castro is finally able to grab a beer, relax and go home. Phew!
The farewell video is amusing because it shows him dancing with that happy Asian dude during auditions singing “Since U Been Gone.” He is truly a goofball, a sweet kid. And he left us a couple of great performances (“Over the Rainbow,” “Hallelujah”) and as Paula says, a real person and a wonderful Jack Johnson surfer dude vibe.
But in recent weeks, he’s either become overwhelmed or tired or both because he clearly wasn’t able to deal with the workload. Two songs in one week? Whoa! That’s too much to memorize!
“Three songs next week. I don’t know what I would have done!” he said.
For only the second time, I correctly predicted the person leaving. (Ramiele is the other one.) But if you look at my original top 12 eight weeks ago, this is the third person I nabbed correctly back then (Michael, Carly, now Jason.). My top 3 at that time was 1) David Archuleta 2) David Cook and 3) Syesha Mercado. I’m most proud of the fact I had faith in Syesha to make it this far. It’s far more fun than noting that I thought David Hernandez would finish in the top 5!
Anyway, the first 54 minutes was the usual filler.
By 9:24 p.m., we know the two Davids are safe, of course. No shocker forthcoming. Thank God. That meant 30 more minutes to wait for the answer between Syesha and Jason.
In case you fastfowarded the first portion of the show or simply skipped it, Ryan noted that there were 51 million votes and the top 3 were all within 1 million votes of each other. That means they each got probably around 13 to 15 million each assuming Jason only got 6 to 8 million votes. We shall see.
The group sing was “Reelin’ in the Years.” Carly Smithson was in the audience again. “Idols Live” tickets go on sale May 17 with a stop at Gwinnett Arena August 18. The top 3 go to their hometowns. The Idols were flown to see “Love” in Vegas on a private 737 - with a bed. “Sleeping in the sky. Ooooh… cool,” said the ever articulate Jason.
I skipped most of the Q&A. I doubt I missed anything. Throwing in Maroon 5 was a blatant play to keep the fleeing 12 to 34 year olds to stick around. Bo Bice harkened back to season four.
Some folks think Jason Castro last night was mouthing the words “Don’t vote!” to the camera as Ryan Seacrest was giving out the numbers. I was typing frantically at the time and as usual, not watching. Some think he simply repeated the word “Vote!” Hard to tell. Go to 4:12 or so:
Then again, it’s a moot point. He’s going home. Right? Right? We do not want a Daughtry or Tamyra tonight.
In other “Idol” news:
-Ace Young and Brandon Rogers are making cameos on Bones next Monday May 12 during a singing contest, in which Brennan takes part and sings “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Bones, as Brennan is known, has no clue what “American Idol” is of course.
-Clay fans are having a field day cos he’s popping up on all the talk shows. Here he is on Good Morning America, thanks to the amazing MJ on MJs’ blog:
-And if you really have a lot of time on your hands, Billboard’s Fred Bronson (nice guy!) interviewed the top 10 contestants. The top 4 are featured here..
-[MSNBC reports that Ryan Seacrest might take over for Larry King as early as next year,] based on a couple of anonymous CNN sources. Seacrest already subs in for Larry. Would this be a good idea? If anybody has the time, though, it’s Ryan, that lazy schlub.
_While I’ve been enjoying this season more than last year, the ratings keep on getting worse. Last night was under 22 million compared to 25.5 million a year ago for the same episode. That’s about a 14 percent drop year over year. Alan Sepinwall, a highly respected TV writer for the Star Ledger in New Jersey, picks the show apart here. He hates the themes this year (which arguably haven’t always been so hot), he thinks this the deepest group without “stinkaroos” like Sanjaya but lacking any truly great great stars besides David Cook and he thinks the contestants look miserable and tired. He abhors the Q&A sessions (which have been truly time fillers) and the mosh pit, which isn’t necessarily awful but that hand waving has to go!
And this is a topic I might bring up as a separate blog entry later this week— perhaps “Idol” is packing too much on the contestants so they are truly exhausted? But are things really any tougher than they were season one? I might have to call Debra Byrd. She’d have a good sense of things…

I thought Jason wanted to go home last week too. For having hundreds of song choices to choose from last night, I thought they were all pretty poor. Eighter “too” well known or too obscure. Let’s have some audience pleasers please! I thought Michael John and Karly were horrible together on DeGeneres show. Screechy awful. Finger nail screechy awful!

Flats, You are slacking, I wasn’t even trying to be first!
Someone is going home tonight, the only shocker for me would be David Cook going.
I want David Cook to win, but if he doesn’t I know he will have an outstanding career in music.

To touch on some things that Rodney added: I’ll be happy with anyone that takes over for Larry King, that guy annoys me. Ryan I like, the only flub he has made this year is not seeing the road signs that said to reel in the tired old Simon vs. Ryan banter.
I’m also with Rodney regarding enjoying this season more than last season. It’s just too bad that some of the real talent (Michael and Carly) went before the fake talent (Brooke and Jason)

Hi, all. I’m another lurker, been lurking around going on three years. Thought I’d add my two cents for what it’s worth. Jason’s “I shot the Sheriff” one of my favorite songs in the day, was so bad I restarted it to make sure I was hearing correctly. Please, please if there’s any justice in this world Jason will be set packing! I voted for the first time this season, David Cook rocks, even if it’s not really my type of music.

Taylar and Anne, you are most certainly allowed your opinion, but there is no reason to be offended if people don’t share it. You liked Jason; most of the bloggers here didn’t. You and many others kept Jason in the competition for longer than he deserved because he was not as good a singer but I’m sure he will come out with a CD and you can watch it to your hearts content. You have to admit that even Jason was relieved to be going. He knew he couldn’t keep up so you should not invest more in him than he can give back. I say this all truly as an attempt to salve your pain. When Clay lost, I was shocked and inconsolible for weeks. You will be fine.

Deirdre: thanks for the tip on the commercial.
emily: I’ve noticed that something was off with the group sings for weeks. This year the contestants can’t harmonize, so they get to sing the solo parts and the rest sounds like it’s background singers or it’s piped in. That of course is my guess. Last year there were several strong group singers that could really harmonize, this year it’s all solo. That may be why the Idol Tour will focus less on group singing.
Jason, what a joke
Rodney: If you get a chance during tomorrows interview you should ask if he wanted to get the boot, that is if someone doesn’t beat you to it.

most people that vote for or against American Idol contestants vote purely on the basis of talent. most of the people voting for Obama are doing so just because he’s a nehjer.

I’m really surprised and disappointed that no one commented on Syesha’s referencing Tina Turner’s version of “Proud Mary” as if it were the original version.
Then, she said, “it’s been covered by so many people since Tina did it”.
UH! The song was, of course, written by John Fogerty and originally recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival and later covered by Tina herself. I mean the song is even listed among the top 500 songs as a CCR song. It is not even listed as an Ike and Tina song.
Rodney, the question I would like you to ask Syesha after she is eliminated next week (hopefully) is “Do you realize that Proud Mary was originally written by John Fogerty and recorded by his band Creedence Clearwater Revival and later covered by Ike & Tina Turner”? Thanks.
Now, for my belated rankings:
1 - David Archuleta - Stand By Me - I think this may be the first time I have had him ranked number one.
2 - David Archuleta - Love Me Tender - I thought the reason the last note was not more audible was because his voice was tired.
3 - David Cook - Hungry Like the Wolf - I disagreed with everyone on this I think. I liked it and was surprised the judges and everyone else tore it apart.
4 - David Cook - Baba O’Riley - I thought it started off rough and what he did with it was reminiscent of other songs he has done on the show and I didn’t think it was quite as good.
5 - Syesha Mercado - Proud Mary - Despite her failure to credit John Fogerty and CCR (a white songwriter and a white band) appropriately, I thought she did pretty well with this song.
6 - Syesha Mercado - A Change is Gonna Come - I agreed with Randy. I thought it was pretty boring. It was touching how she was touched by the song. I only wish she would have taken the time to research “Proud Mary” as much as she researched this one. I’m sure she thinks John Fogerty covered Tina Turner.
7 - Jason Castro - Mr. Tambourine Man - I liked the way he started off in this one. Then, he forgot the lyrics.
8 - Jason Castro - I Shot the Sheriff - Atrocious!
I would have predicted Jason Castro’s exit. It was pretty obvious. Neither of the Davids had a terrible outing although I will say that David Archuleta is making a case for himself to win this thing in the late going. Could David Cook have peaked too soon? Maybe.

um sunny….that’s “dreds” not “dregs” …. dregs is what’s left in your cup when the coffeemaker spills the ground coffee into the pot … or the cold last sip of coffee you just canNOT bear to drink…
as an example, of course.
“dregs” is like … “what’s left”
nothing wrong with laid back, either…. just jason wasn’t AI winner material in the long run…. i think he pegged it himself tonight… his lack of experience… he’s never really performed publicly, right? and certainly never competed (stoners don’t compete, they generally can’t be bothered) ~¿@
right results, nonetheless. and i think a LOT of the extra votes WERE adults!
so… nite gang, sorry i’m so late at this… got back from picking up the kid from college at 930, ate, relaxed and THEN watched the DVR with fast forward on most of the show, LOL

I’ve never seen a happier person than Jason was last night. linny’s right, his comment that his lack of experience was hurting him was very telling. If he didn’t mouth ‘don’t vote’ it wasn’t because he didn’t want to.
The best part is that we have 3 relative experienced and GOOD singers to entertain us next week.

Ok A-M!
Here’s a quote by Craig Berman of msn.com who sums up exactly what I’ve been thinking about Jason for the last few weeks:
“Over the past few weeks, Castro has had the look of someone who entered a contest on a dare only to find himself drawn in way too deep for comfort.”

WOOT. The Dreadlocked somnambulist is gone!!!
I liked Jason, but it was very apparent he was in way over his head the last few weeks. I will smile and remember “hallelujah” and “over the Rainbow” fondly, but it was time for him to go.
I loved his response to Ryan saying he didn’t appear to be upset about leaving. “dude, 3 songs next week, I had no idea what I would do” LOL - if nothing else the boy was a breath of fresh air on what has started to become a stale show.
What a final 3 we have. David A and David C are great week in week out, whether we like thier style or not. and Syesha, wow has she blossomed the last few weeks. I think next week could be really really special.
I was so happy to see Bo perform last night, and I love “Witness”. I really cannot say enough good things about his new album, it is friggin awesome!!! I highly recommend it to everyone if you like country/southern rock. You will not be disappointed. The only thing I don’t understand is why he released it exclusively through Walmart.

May 8, 2008 9:12 AM | Link to this
KPH, Preach it bro. The Braves are finally waking up. CHipper has put the teamon his shoulders and crried them to this point, not Tex, Yunel, etc are starting to chip in and things are beginning to role.
Jair Jurrjens has been a godsend in the rotation, and I am actually very excited about Jo Jo Reyes this year. He was downright unhittable in Richmond, and the other day he finally looked like a PITCHER. I think the light might have finally gone on in his head. Glavine will nto be spectacular, but should continue to give 4-6 solid innings. Hudson is solid. Now they just need someone to step up in the 5 hole.
Soriano got good news yesterday, no structural damage in his elbow. I cannot wait for the next couple weeks to pass. Soriano and Gonzalez back and setting up the MAN - JOHN SMOLTZ back at closer where he belongs!!!
On the subject of Bo Bice - Not only is this album the style he is made for - HE WROTE EVERY SONG ON THE ALBUM!

flats—- apparently you are too young to remember much about the braves in the 70s. THESE braves are positively excellent compared to most of those years’ teams! Individually, the braves back then had some incredible players … but the ‘team’ never really meshed and made it anything special… but they were still fun to watch, games were fun to go to (and back then, affordable) … so would you PUHLEEZE get off the negativity and harping about how BAD they are and either enjoy them or just don’t MENTION them????
sorry, i’m just not in the mood for it and too feisty this morning to be quiet.
i won’t say anything else to you about it, but i guaranty you, everyone’s just NOT interested in the fact that you don’t trust the braves to do anything. We get it. You don’t. you don’t have to tell us every day—if they win, it’s a fluke, if they lose, its’ because they’re just terrible. we get it. what you think.
sheesh.
[word of explanation: i drove 3 hours yesterday to middle georgia, muuuuch hotter than up our way, no a/c in the car, packed a kid’s belongings somehow into the van and then 3 hours back. all my patience is somewhere on the side of highway 441, i think, today—-it hasn’t caught up with me yet, so i apologize if i came off offensive… but i’m just telling it like i see it, today]

linny—You Go Girl! Tell ‘em about the 70s Braves. I remember well. These Braves are awesome to me.
On Bo. I thought his song was really good. He seemed a little rusty to me, maybe at the beginning. So glad that he is back and healthy. Must have been so disappointing for his career for him to have suffered such poor health. I guess maybe he was busy just trying to live, though, and not too worried about anything else at the time.
And, I thought Jason’s candor was quite entertaining last night. We all knew he was over his head, but it was nice hearing him acknowledge it. I wish him well.

OK, for all of you who thought Sayesha was not being political the night before when she blathered on about civil rights, last night proved she’s on the soap box. Again she brought up civil rights AND politics, saying she’s passionate about the civil rights movement and deeply moved at that we could have a woman or African American become the next president.
I despise being preached at by arrogant celebrities, and back-to-back nights speaking out about her politics is enough for me to be done with her as American Idol. It’s only going to get worse, of course, now that she’s found her voice for the mission of civil rights, and I will be sure to root for her elimination from this point forward.
American Idol is not a forum for political activism. She needs to go.

Q: So tell me about the new CD. I presume you didn’t have to compromise on this one.
Bice: It’s undiluted. It’s straight from me to the fans. It’s my point of view. It’s Southern rock, pure and simple. That’s what the fans wanted. To be honest, I compromised my spirit more on ‘The Real Thing’ than I ever did on “Idol.”
Q: Are you expecting big radio play from any of the songs?
Bice: Oh, no. I’m not in denial over that. This is not a pop album. And I’ve stopped trying to measure success by CD sales or radio airplay. I’m on an indie label. Things are going to be a lot better for me.
Q: Why did you hook up with Wal-Mart?
Bice: It was StratArt [his management company Strategic Artist Management.] I shop at Wal-Mart. I felt comfortable with it.

Ya know, Neg…that’s not what I remember Syesha saying last night AT ALL. What I heard was Ryan ask her why she was so emotional….she talked about Paula saying she was living her dream….about how the song, which was originally written about the civil rights movement, symbolized the changes in her life by being on Idol.
Can anyone else back me up on this?

that’s what i heard D — what you said. Referencing the CRmovement was correct, because that WAS the background for the song. But I felt Syesha was talking about her own personal changes…
it’s like… a few years back a christian youth group choir took the song “My Guy” and made it into a churcheable song “My God” … Some older folks were freaked … but the kid who did it told the church … “The song is about the faithfulness and love of and for a guy… what “Guy” is more important in our lives than “God” ??? so… i’m adapting the pop song to express that!!!
if that made any sense to anyone…

D, all I can say is that it takes a pretty thin skin to take offense at what Syesha said last night. It was all in the spirit of putting the song in the oontext of the times—then, and now. There was no bias at all about who should or should not be president—just that changes come and this is a new day for her and for society. Not political at all, in my estimation. A question: why would mentioning the civil rights movement bother someone, anyway?

harrietth — because some people want to make a ‘problem’ out of ANYthing they can, apparently. and some people, whether Black, White, Red, Yellow or Brown — or even combinations of those — are ready to find offense at every turn. I innocently asked a question one day regarding something i saw (an article) where the word for a person of the darker persuasion was capitalized (“Black”) but in the same article, the word for a person of a paler persuasion was lower-case (“white”) … and simply wondered why. A young lady who would now call herself “African-American” went so off on me that someone else had to intervene. There was no aspersion cast, no slur or offense meant or said … but she took offense because i dared to ask why one was capitalized and the other was not. The chip on her shoulder would have made an excellent telephone pole, imho. It’s just the way it is (and people of all races have members who are just as ultra “sensitive” to color as that, and this is NOT a condemnation of any one racial persuasion or another of the community…it’s the relation of a story that portrays the sensitivity—or over-sensitivity—of some individuals

Ahhh they were “neighbors” then — Nate stayed at Harris HIS first year, then went to the new dorm over on campus (while Harris was rebuilt) but hated it, so moved to Talmadge. He almost majored in computer science, LOL, but got so involved with the music department he changed his major — then they opened up the ATC program, which is a 4-year program—all his core classes having been done, he should finish in a little over 2, and he thinks he’s found his niche! I’ll ask if he knows a Shayla :-)

Acts like Bo Bice is exactly why a David Archuleta needs to be recording music.
Now wait a minute. Let me speak.
What da hell was all that wild, rambling, “Witness” song all about?
Seems like one can hear that inaudible man-screeching on any college fraternity lawn Saturday nights…
The art of the pure voice form is almost disappearing these days. While I don’t think Archie needs to record an entire cd of soft ballads…still, I will be eager to hear his voice sing MEANINGFUL songs that actually say something, with words one can hear and comprehend.
Well, I know plenty of you like Bo Bice. So it’s pretty much a matter of personal taste.
Thanks for letting me have my little say.
