5/13: Idol top 3 performance show

top 3 idol 2008.jpg

Sorry about starting this so late. Played tennis, then hit the weights (negating the exercise with a yummy coffee mocha milkshake at Steak n Shake, ahem). So it’s now past 10 p.m. and I’m hitting the DVR.

Interestingly, the personal picks by the trio were relatively weak. The producer’s picks were truly atrocious. But the judges did a solid job and their picks made my top three. Overall, it wasn’t a terribly memorable night.

As for the performances, David Cook does indeed win the night, as Simon said. And David Archuleta was a solid second, doing about as well as you’d expect, with or without Daddy Dearest. Syesha was good but not good enough at this stage.

It’s an easy call: say goodbye to Syesha. Even with Paula predicting a David/David finale, I can’t see enough Syesha fans rallying to defeat either David. The fact is, since neither Dave tripped up, they didn’t change what has been an almost inevitable outcome since the beginning of the top 12. Syesha has made an admirable late run but no way she can break the combo. [Dialidol.com has Syesha safely at the bottom.]

My predictive track record this season is abysmal—I’m only 2 out of 8. I actually did better before the top 12 started—I’ve gotten three right so far from that stage.

My rankings:

1-David Cook (“First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” Roberta Flack, Simon’s pick) third - What a strange choice. “It’s one of the great songs of all time,” Simon said. “Unlike Randy [with Syesha,] I wanted him to do something different. David has a chance to show some originality.” I’m sure Daughtry couldn’t do this song as well as David. This forces David to hit his higher register, which isn’t half bad. He clearly decided to infuse it with some real soul, as opposed to phoning it in, which he easily could have done. Great money shot note at the end. Even Simon clapped! Randy: “Loved the high note at the end but I wish Simon had picked something as predictable as this older kind of song. I want you to rock.” Paula: “That is one of my favorite songs. Now you’re the second favorite person to sing it.” Simon: “I thought it was one of your best performances to date. This is what makes you brilliant. Round one goes to Cook and Cowell!” A

2-David Archuleta (“And So It Goes” by Billy Joel, Paula’s pick) first song sung - I’m a huge Billy Joel song and since season two, Billy has seldom, if ever, has popped up. This was a top 5 soft rock hit for Billy but not one of his better known songs. Carmen Rasmussen did it not quite so well that year during Billy Joel week. I do love it. It’s pensive, yet melodically sweet. He slows it down and gives it a hymnal feeling. David hits it out of the park. Randy: “The Billy Joel thing works for you… You’re in the zone. You’re in it to win it, baby!” (Hasn’t he said those phrases like 40 times already? Get a thesaurus, dawg!) Paula: “It was a pure and stunning performance.” Simon: “It was very good. You know, no surprises. Bit predictable.” A/A-minus

3-Syesha Mercardo (“If I Ain’t Go You” Alicia Keys, Randy’s pick) second - I think purposely picked this song to see if she could be an R&B star. She does it well but is she a commercial R&B artist along the lines of Alicia Keys? I’m really not sure. It’s good but she simply can’t transcend the essence that is Alicia. Randy: “I thought that would work really well on you. You did an amazing job. I’m so happy you’re peaking at the right time.” Paula: “I’m very proud you’re the very last lady standing.” Simon: “You sang that very well. I just wish that Randy had chosen something for you, you weren’t going to sound like the original.” B-plus

4-David Archuleta (“With You” by Chris Brown, David’s pick) fourth — Yah! A current song! We haven’t had many of those this season. And this is one of my favorite songs of 2008. it’s hilarious seeing him utter the word “boo.” He almost messes up partway through proving this is a deceptively difficult song to sing. And a smart choice to appeal to the googly-eyed teens. And he doesn’t embarrass himself. Randy: “I applaud you are trying something new and young. Seeing you sing ‘my boo’ is unbelievable.” Paula: “It’s in the right tone of your voice. You’re so used to singing ballads…This is another part of who you. I’d work getting into it and not extending the phrases.” Simon: “I applaud you didn’t do a treacly ballad. It was a little bit like a chihuahua being a tiger in so much as it’s not really you. It was a bit awkward, the dancing.” [Simon is right.] But I like the song so he gets a B-plus

5-David Cook (“I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing,” producer’s pick) pimp spot - I hate, hate, hate this song. Did I emphasize I hate this song? But give David credit: he makes it almost tolerable. [Josh Gracin took a stab at it and so did, get this—Antonella Barba last year.] And he is working’ the money note again! Randy: “I love the song. It was okay for me. Very predictable.” Paula: “This is where the beginning, middle and ending is. David—see ya in the finals!” Simon: “One of the great songs of all time. David Cook wins the night.” B-plus

6-Syesha Mercado (“Hit Me Up” Gia Farrell, producer’s pick) eighth up — This was a No. 1 hit — in Hungary but barely scraped the charts here in 2006. It’s not a bad party song, the type of song Syesha hasn’t done much of. He does a perfectly adequate job. Randy: “It was just okay for me.” Paula: “It was from the ‘Happy Feet’ soundtrack. You did the song very well. I just want to tell you. As much as I liked it, I’m not sure if it defines you as Syesha the artist. I don’t know if it will get you into the finals of American Idol.” Simon: “It was better than the second song. Your best moment last week was the Sam Cooke song. The problem with that song. It’s a little bit forgettable. It’s fun and young but didn’t give you the defining moment at the end of this song.” [You can’t blame her. She didn’t pick the song!] B/B-plus

7-David Archuleta (“Longer” Dan Fogelberg, producer’s pick) seventh up — Speaking of treacly ballads, this one truly takes the cake, a cake with two tablespoons of sugar too many. The late great Fogelberg’s hit feels so retro ’70s and Archuleta can’t do much to save it from the mush that it is. Randy: “You can sing the phone book. You’re in the zone. Another hot one from you.” Paula: “Very lovely.” Simon: “You sang the song very well. However, the song and the lyrics are horrible. It’s so gooey. But you’ve done enough to get in the finals next week.” B

8-Syesha Mercado (“Fever” by Peggy Lee, Syesha’s pick) fifth up “I like the vibe of the song,” she said. “And I wanted to use the chair.” Paris Bennett did a pretty good job on this song two years ago. This is a good pick cos it has a Broadway vibe to it. Although she does a competent job, I was left kinda cold. No fever for me. Now if Kat McPhee had done it… Randy: “Very interesting song choice. What I will highlight. You sang it amazingly well.” Paula: “Out of all the songs, I’m surprised you picked this song. I’m not sure it shows who Syesha is as an artist.” [harsh for Paula!] Simon: “You will probably regret that decision tomorrow. You could have picked a song to show you as a contemporary. artist. It was a lame cabaret performance.” B/B-minus [My wife noted that she didn’t really work the chair well either.]

9-David Cook (“Dare You To Move” Switchfoot, David’s personal pick) sixth up - He had already planned to sing Collective Soul but switched to Switchfoot instead. Not sure why. It was a top 10 hit for the alternative rock band though I was personally bored by the song whenever it hit the radio. And he only makes it marginally better, even though he did finish with a flourish. Randy: “A little pitchy.” Paula: “I feel like you just got to the beginning when it hit the end of the song. I wanted more.” [Yes, it felt truncated.] Simon: “I don’t think it’s the best melodic song.” B/B-minus

In a TV Guide interview, Archuleta defended his dad before Jeff’s banishment: “I’ve heard the weird things that people have been saying, and it’s kind of a bummer. My dad’s been great. He understands more than anyone what I want.” (Would you expect anything else from the Arch?)

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe explained the situation with Jeff at ew.com::

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: There have been reports that Jeff Archuleta was banished from backstage, but then David’s vocal coach gave a radio interview in which he said that wasn’t the case. What light can you shed on this?

NIGEL LYTHGOE: “Banished” is a terrible word, isn’t it? It sounds like we’re in some far-off kingdom. He has been asked not to participate in the choice of music with David or be in the room when David is working out his routines that he wants to sing. He’s fine to be in the studio — nothing wrong with that. We just want David to be able to be free like everybody else to get on and do what they want to do.

Naturally, TMZ reports that Jeff Archuleta Tuesday night was buddy buddy with Randy but not Nigel!.

LMAO I just looked at Yahoo! TV’s picks for the 10 best/most memorable Idol performances yet this season. They are HORRIBLE picks! I agreed with like.. 3 or 4 of them..maybe I should take over? I sure as hell know I’d have some better picks than that…

Performance order tonight:

  1. David Archuleta
  2. Syesha Mercado
  3. David Cook

Once again, Cook closes the show (surprise…)

It’s time for Archie to go bye bye, sorry…

By Deirdre

I really don’t think performance order has much of an effect at this stage. Maybe it’s still a problem for top 5 or top 6 but…we’re not going to forget and we know them all well enough by now to KNOW who we’re voting for even before they sing.

Spoiler Alert

David Cook’s producers’ choice song is I don’t Want To Miss a Thing by Aerosmith……..in my opinion, only Cookie is able to change this song enough to make it palatable.

I’m looking foward to hearing David C’s performance of Collective Soul’s The World I Know.

It’s one of my favorite songs from the mid 90’s, and they are from Stockbridge, Georgia.

Round 3: David C (DAM!); Syesha; and, coming in a distant 3rd… the very boring and predictable Archie.

By Deirdre

May 13, 2008 9:12 PM | Link to this

Round one: I actually liked them all but definitely Cook, Mercado and Archuletta, in that order.

Round two: Mercado did a terrific Fever…what the frak is the matter with the judges(I think it has something to do with falling ratings and the need for more contemporary songs)followed by a so-so Cook and an almost laughable Archuletta(face it honey…you are NOT a pop/rock singer.

Round three: Cook did a great job with his song. Syesha did what she could with hers and Archie put us to sleep yet again.

By Deirdre

May 13, 2008 9:15 PM | Link to this

But…before we start calling Archie predictable….let’s keep in mind that he only picked one of his three songs and the one he picked was outside his box. It didn’t work at all…but at least he tried.

By MIke S

May 13, 2008 9:15 PM | Link to this

Not really a blow me away night tonight. Some very good performances, but I was very dissappointed with some of the song choices.

  1. David Cook - First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - I knew exactly what David was going to do with this song, and he knocked it out of the park.

  2. David Cook - I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing - Another awesome David Performance. He is in another zone from Syesha and Archie.

  3. Syesha Mercado - Fever - I loved this. She sang it amazingly and vamped around the stage like a pro. Excellent! ROWR!!!

  4. Syesha - If I Ain’t Got You - Syesha has totally blossomed the last few weeks. This was another Amazing vocal.

  5. David Cook - Dare You To Move - Don’t like the song, and I think it was a questionable choice by David. That said, He was excellent as always.

  6. David Archuletta - And So It Goes - Took a Billy Joel classic and turned it into a snooze inducing crawler. The kid has amazing vocal tone, but the soulful slow ballad schtick is growing old.

  7. Syesha Mercado - Hit Me Up - What a horrid song choice by the producers. Talk about a sabotage job of her chances. I think Paula’s vicious attack on Syesha may actually help her get votes though.

  8. David Archuleta - Longer - He actually found a way to make Dan Fogleburg Slower and more boring than usual. Unbelievably stupifying.

  9. David Archuleta - With You - What the hell was this? Monchichi looked like a garden gnome on crack. Simon said it perfectly - a Chihuahua trying to be a tiger.

Final Rankings - David C, Syesha, David A

If there is any justice, Monchichi will be gone this week. Unfortunately the brain dead teens will probably put him in the final, and a very deserving Syesha will be going home.

By DawnH

May 13, 2008 9:23 PM | Link to this

While IMO David C won the night, I thought Syesha was really great. Archie was just mediocre. What do the judges have against Syesha. With the exception by Simon last week, they haven’t had one positive comment for her. Even Paula has come out of her fog to criticize her - except to tell her she looks good. What’s up with that?

By Deirdre

May 13, 2008 9:28 PM | Link to this

I’m not defending Archie because they could have picked ANY song for him and he’d still be getting votes but…for heaven’s sake! And So It Goes??? That’s a ‘lived life and been kicked in the gut but I’m still here ’ song. For a 17 year old????? A ridiculously immature 17 year old???????. AND…Longer????? That’s a song for someone my age looking back on the love he’s shared with someone. Again…for a 17 year old?????

Like I said…not defending him but…seriously!

Dawn…I totally agree with you about the judges and their opinion of Syesha. That girl has been working her butt off and that’s all they can muster to say to her? She was better than Archie tonight…without a doubt…yet they chose not to see it. Because, just like the rest of the country, they expect a 2 David finale.

By Justin

|:O That would be the mad face, in case you didn’t know.

  1. David Archuleta

*”And So It Goes”- Another one of ‘those’ performances, though the beginning was very, very nice. Mad good vocals, however.

*”With You”- Didn’t like it as I thought I would. The judges I don’t think even noted his flubs during the song (messing up): Biased to the max!

*”Longer (?)”- Good, but boring. A night like any other night. Def. expected that comment from Simon — Once again, biased…..

  1. Syesha Mercado

*”If I Ain’t Got You”- I agree with everything Simon said. I don’t like the song choice at all, but it was good. Does anyone notice the band plays so loud you can barely hear her sometimes?

*”Fever”- I liked how she dealt with it. I just wish she sang it more fiercely and with more power, like Paris Bennett did. Here starts the downfall of Syesha :( All the more reason to vote?

*”Hit Me Up”- Stupid producers! VOTE!!!! 1-866-43657-02 05 or 08! OK- the order choice tonight was just stupid. Terrible song, because HELLO, what can she do with it to get in the finals- NOTHING! It’s just one of those songs you “sing” And wow, Paula, way to be 2 faced. Way to transform from love to hate. Whatever, I’m voting for what I believe is the right decision…

  1. David Cook

*”First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”- BRILLIANT! I loved it. Did Simon clap???? HE IS SOOO BIASED! That’s why I’m not liking him so much.

*”Can’t remember the song name LOL”- Was just ok, pitchy in the beginning, maybe that’s why…

*”I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”- Yeah, nice, you know the drill..

Not hardly WE! I just think if we expect the judges to pick songs suited to our favorite then we ought to expect them to do the same for everyone.

If Syesha is eliminated, I’m pretty sure most of her fans will vote Cook. I just can’t see them picking Archie…and BTW…I thought Archie’s breathing was really loud tonight and his phrasing kept making me think he was about to forget the words.

By MAC

May 13, 2008 9:42 PM | Link to this

IMO, Syesha was vamping it up a bit (and did it well!)and playing to the home audience not the judges. She has been consistently in the bottom two, on votes not performance, so it didn’t matter whether the judges liked her songs, she will be gone unless she picks up some support from viewers. David A. is not versatile enough to be in the finals, let alone to win. Cook is a given, vote for Syesha.

By Deirdre

May 13, 2008 10:31 PM | Link to this

I don’t think wanting to come in second had anything to do with it. They had 3 songs to learn, one of which they didn’t get until Friday…they had a hometown visit, a Ford commercial to make, a photo shoot for TV Guide and every other magazine that wanted pictures of the Top 3, interviews and appearances. They probably aren’t getting more than 4 or 5 hours of sleep every night…they’re exhausted because they never get a break!

Idol needs to take their health and well-being into account.

By PCJ

As much as I like “I don’t want to miss a thing” and DC I hated the arrangement. They messed around with a great song. Also I agree that SM was set up with that last song to fail. She did the best she could do with it. DA just sucked big time all around. I think he may as well sung the phone book because they were not at all good performances.

So my overall rankings tonight…

  1. David Cook

2/3. Syesha and David A. are tied. The only thing that did Syesha in are the songs that were chosen for her. David did well on the first song, but the 2nd and 3rd I really didn’t like. So preferably I’d rather see a Cook/Mercado final. Clearly people did not support that, as Syesha is predicted to go home on DialIdol…whatever…. at least she came in the place I was wanting so badly for her to make that top 3.

I had to get on here to see if Syesha got any love. It’s nice to see that several people agree with me. I agree 100% with the song list Mike S. put out. The judges seem to be pushing for a David vs. David competition even though she did awesome. I thought her second and third songs were far better than Archie’s. She showed that she belongs in the top 3!

Neg’s Take:

The way I will rank tonight is by total points out of ten, per song, per contestant.

1. Sayesha: First song: If I Ain’t Got You -Analysis: She looks phenominal, and beautifully delivers the song. She is such a pro. Score: 9/10

Second song: Fever -Analysis: She is ready for a professional career now, today, this minute. She was gorgeous, gave a fantastic vocal, and nailed an amazing stage performance. She is getting scary good. -Score: 9/10

Third song: Hit Me Up Analysis: Again, she is so talented working the stage it’s incredible. Not a good song choice for her by the producers (conspiracy?), but she hit all the notes, sounded great, and again delivered on stage. Score: 8/10

Sayesha TOTAL: 26/30

2. David Cook: First song: First Time Ever I saw your face.
-Analysis: Cook was given a juicy, fat, beach ball of a song to knock out of the park by Simon. How did he do? He knocked it out of the park, of course. Soft, tender beginning, rough and grungy at the end.
-Score: 9/10

Second Song: Dare to Move. -Analysis: Not a very good job. He missed on the arrangement, cutting the song off awkwardly, and his vocal was mediocre. Also, the song itself was blah and not very catchy.
-Score: 6/10

Third Song: Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. -Analysis: He just nails it right from the first note. Like Rodney, I can’t stand this overplayed, droning song, but he does an incredible job with it, again going slow and then toughening it up at the end in his patented style. -Score: 10/10

DC TOTAL: 25/30

3. Archuletta First Song: And There it Goes. -Analysis: Very nice performance. Excellent vocals and good arrangement. -Score: 9/10

Second Song: With You. -Analysis: Ridiculously bad. A comically amateurish performance that completely flopped. Terrible bouncing on stage, weak vocals, and it once again proved how one dimensional he is compared to the other two. -Score: 2/10

Third Song: Longer -Analysis: Tender song that he imitated in true karaoke fashion. No changes, stiff as a board on stage, and failed to hit the high notes. Decent vocal, but not Idol deserving at all. -Score: 6/10

Archuletta TOTAL: 17/20

OK, that leaves us with the judges. My grade for them tonight was an F. Cowell and Randy bickered about which one of THEM chose the best songs, rather than review the performance objectively. Then, in true Paula fashion, Simon told Archuletta that he did enough to move on to the finals BEFORE Sayesha and Cook even had a chance to sing their songs.

Finally, their merciless, unjustified pounding of Sayesha, and overt favoritism for Archuletta, was simply shameless and disgraceful. I hope America did what was right and put Sayesha through to the finals with DC. Archuletta simply isn’t good enough to compete at this level, period.

My score on Negativo’s rating of Idol’s performance tonight: 29/30! So close to perfect that it scares me.

If I could give extra credit for your rating of the judges I would, because that was 10/10!

well…. because of family time i didn’t get to blog earlier, but Neg, nice review! Mike, you too!

Summarizing, because I don’t need to go through this…. DC’s “First TIme Ever” was freaking INCREDIBLE, and he did admirably on the other two. Syesha was extremely entertaining and sounded great, overall. Archichi just… well… was predictable, boring and while he has an incredible instrument in that voice, he’s just NOT ready for this, imho. The accapella opening i thought was quite credible, but as soon as the band kicked in, i felt he lost it.

i have to say i was surprised by all 3 on the self-pick … all 3 were downright lousy choices. but i was more annoyed by the various comments by the judges about the SONGS they were singing for 1st and 3rd performances….those kids never had a say in those songs, they just had to learn them. How can you say bad things about the song choice when it wasn’t a choice????? sheesh!

see you guys tomorrow!

Good morning everyone - had to record idol last night so just watched it this morning - David Cook has got to be the next American Idol. Syesha made it perfectly clear with her choice of song where she wants to be in life - acting + singing = Broadway. David A - oh no not the next American Idol.

Maybe the show would have been better last night if the contestants got to pick one song and the judges got to pick one song. Then, the contestants could have song more of each song. It seems like they just got started and the song was over with having to sing 3 songs each

Good morning. Did anyone else think that the backup singers were overpowering? I noticed it especially on Archie’s songs, but on Syesha’s too. In fact, they kept cutting away to the backups, and the middle one was just dancing up and down and calling attention to herself. Even the person I was watching with commented on it, and he’s not usually that interested. The mix is awful. When the singers take a bit of license with the melody, it is especially annoying. Nobody is singing the same note. They need to tone them down before next week.

I’m one of those “lurkers” — but just wanted to say something about Syesha. She has a real talent for Broadway musicals … and I think she knows that. At this point in the season I have a feeling she knows that she can’t be either of the 2 Davids. So, why not showcase a song that highlights her true talents. I think her choice of “Fever” and her “acting” while she sang it was a brilliant idea. She has great stage presence, a very good voice!

For me, David Cook won last night. He took that song that Simon gave him and blew the other 2 out of the water with it. the other 2 judges song choices made their performances predictable. But I felt like Paula played to Archie’s strengths better than Randy did.

Second song choice made me very confused. Does anyone know why David Cook changed from the Collective Soul song? I think he would have done better with that one. Archie cannot do a quick beat R&B song to save his life. So awkward and he flubbed the words (am I the only one who noticed that?). Syesha showed that she wants to perform - don’t think that really helped her. She looked beautiful, but nearly had a “Basic Instinct” moment while crossing her legs sitting in that chair.

Third song - wow, the producers must have been asleep when they made these choices. At least DC got to stand out a bit.

I voted as much as I could for DC last night. But wonder if I should have thrown some pity votes to Syesha. I am not a big fan of hers, but would rather see her in the final 2 that that Monchichi.

morning Mushblawgland… Syesha will survive and do quite well in showbiz, i’ve no doubt. but it’s a shame that li’l Archichi is being given so much ooomph by the judges when in reality, while he has incredible singing ability, the rest of the package is just li’l boy cutesy and not even all that cute at that imho. It’s almost like there’s a fear of criticizing HIM because he’s so… what… young???? Really? well THEY set the age limits…and yes, he IS too young to compete against peeps 10 years older, imho. just another reason to raise the age to at LEAST 18 and graduated from high school. eliminates a lot of questions and problems (i’d prefer grouping it — 14-19, 20-29, and a 30+ … there’s room in Fox’s programming to run 3 different singing competitions, IMHO, with Dancing during the 4th quarter! just cut out all the crappy audition shows (do a 1-time compilation of audition shows each season just before the finals to appease those who HAVE to have the junk)

and LET THE CONTESTANTS SING MORE OF THE SONGS…cut out the freaking gab!!!

My wife, who was no Sayesha fan at all for the first few rounds, commented that watching Archuletta, and then Sayesha, was like an amateur night “before” followed by the professional “after”.

Look, I’m no Sayesha apologist, far from it, but I do have ears and eyes and can tell the difference between star talent and a hack playing “Idol” with his karaoke machine.

Archuletta was so outsung, outperformed and out classed by Sayesha it was a joke. We actually laughed out loud watching Arch massacre the Chris Brown number.

If there is any justice, he goes home tonight. Then again, look how long were we tortured with an outclassed Jason Castro before he was mercifully laid to rest last week.

Seems that this season lame performances are rewarded and top performances are punished.

Syesha showed the audience last night that her sights are set more towards Broadway than just a recording career, a good move on her part if you ask me. She has a better than average voice, not great…but good. Her looks will only help her. Short David was terrible. He must learn to open his eyes and his mouth at the same time, it’s really not that difficult if your practice in front of a mirror. Perhaps he is the single overrated contestant that’s gotten this far. It was obvious to me last night the show is trying to manipulate the votes for David v David showdown, all for ratings. Ratings this season are sinking and they need to save the show. Dvaid C. was good, better than than his rivals but I don’t see him having a long term career either. To be this far into the season, I wasn’t impressed as much as I thought I would be. The show probably will never produce another Carrie Underwood.

Good Morning to One and All!!!!!

No need for me to give my rankings cos they rank with everyone else. I did miss Archie’s second song when my daughter called so I didn’t hear him, only in the recap. I will have to say that I wholeheartly agree with what was posted about the producers choice for Syesha. They had to know when they choose that song for her it was a mistake. However, like the pro she has proven to be, she took it and embraced it with all she had. I admire her for doing that. What I do not understand, is how the dadgum judges can blast them when they (contestants) DID NOT CHOOSE THE SONG in the first place. I just don’t get it. Looks like thefinal two are the Davids, unless my some miracle, DA fails.

I guess you all saw Justin Gardini(sp) in the audience. I still think he is cute, curly hair and all. He sure doesn’t get his looks from his dad - Clayton County Commissioner Alton Bell.

DWTS: Sorry to see Marissa go last night, but was not surprised at the outcome.

I have a lot of medical stuff with mom to attend to today so I won’t be on much.

Unfortunately, as predicted months ago, we are looking at a David/David finale even though Syesha far outsang the youngster.

I liked Archie’s version of the first song…he did it very well but after that, his performance was mediocre(Longer) to downright awful(With You) It’s a shame that he won’t be judged by his failings but by his popularity.

This is great! It’s long but worth the read. By Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly. The article is titled Throw Syesha From the Train;

By Michael Slezak

INTERIOR. A DARK HOLLYWOOD SOUNDSTAGE. Dressed in a slinky, metallic-sequined gown, a blindfolded SYESHA MERCADO is led by a pair of GOONS to center stage, where she is tied to a wooden post. One of the men lights the extra long cigarette hanging from Syesha’s mouth. She inhales, chin held high, betraying no hint of fear or desperation.

Suddenly, the floodlights are switched on. Syesha finds herself facing an angry semicircle of VIOLIN PLAYERS. From stage left, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER NIGEL LYTHGOE rubs his hands and salivates, while a deathly quiet falls over the audience. The JUDGES take their seats and prepare to speak.

RANDY: What’s goin’ down, Syesha? So listen, dawg, in round 1, your Alicia Keys cover, I dunno…for me, for you, it started out a little rough for me, but ultimately, it was equal to Little David’s ”And So It Goes.”

PAULA: Let me just start by saying that you look lovely tonight. You are authentically playing the role of Syesha with authenticity. And also, your performance of ”Fever” was definitely more in tune than Rocker David’s ”Dare You to Move.”

SIMON: What Paula and Randy are trying to say is it’s a good thing we ended with the ”producers’ choice” round, because if I’m being honest, even if the sequins in your dress miraculously began to display the image of the Virgin Mary in front of an American flag, there’s no way you’d be able to overcome the fact that we saddled you with that deplorable Rihanna knockoff from the Happy Feet soundtrack.

SYESHA lets the cigarette drop from her mouth. She smiles broadly, and though her mike has been shut off, she gamely mouths the words ”Idols oh two.” Seconds later, however, a trapdoor opens up beneath Syesha, and she falls out of view. The camera cuts to Ryan.

RYAN: Syesha, your journey ends tonight.

Backstage, NIGEL and his fellow producers jump up and down excitedly, while confetti rains down from the ceiling.

NIGEL: [Tearfully.] David wins! And so does David!

Yeah, so maybe that’s not exactly how season 7’s penultimate American Idol performance episode played out. And I’m not going to pretend to make a compelling case that over 13 weeks of live performances, Syesha has proven she truly belongs in the final two. What I will say, though, is that in a season where my very favorite TV show has repeatedly undermined its own credibility — judging some contestants before they’ve actually performed, praising others even when they noticeably botch kind-of-important details like, oh, their lyrics — it would’ve been nice if the Mistress of the Bottom Two had been allowed to compete on a musically level playing field with the dueling Davids.

  1. DC should and deserves to win this year. He has after all been the most consistant even when he’s been out of the zone. There is a lot work and demands on these contestants so if sometimes he come up a little short IMO he still always comes across as a professional.

  2. SM has never been given her due by these judges. With all that has been done to her by their hands, even when very good, she is treated as mediocore. I truely think they are afraid of her talent, that she might upstage one of their hand picked choices. If they are not then their comments are really strange and parinoid when it comes to her. It makes me wonder if after the choice of the final 12 if we should here from them at all (pipe dream)

  3. DA - overrated, overblown, just over him. At first he impressed me with his voice but he too soon became a one trick pony. He can flub notes, sing the wrong words (onetime intentionally), miss the beat and be Gomer Pyle-ish (at least Jason’s goofiness was sincere and he kept it real) and those judges still fall all over each other in their praise.

  4. I now have little or no respect for the judges opinion. They will trash a good performance for a passable one and they think no one sees what they are up to. They should be ashamed of theirselves. No wonder ratings are down. Honesty and a lack of bais go a long way in reality TV.

sorry this is so long but I had a lot to get off my chest.

The judges obvious pimping of Archuletta reeks of desperation. The show is looking more older and worn with every passing year, and now they are desprately trying to persuade the voters to got he direction they feel will boost their ratings.

Sad, really. Paula is clinging to her last run as a relevant show biz personality, Randy is clearly towing the company line, too, because he will be a nobody again if the show fails, and Simon is addicted to his celebrity and understands that he’ll never be in the center of the spotlight like this after Idol’s run is over.

This is all about the judges and Ryan trying to keep their gig by forcing the outcome they want, and not trusting the show’s own merit, or America, with their fate.

He’ll grow up. Give him a chance to grow up will ya?

and with the right producers and songwriters, he can do well in pop culture, I think.

The other David is what I don’t really care for. To me, he’s a male screecher/rocker. Fine for a lot of you I know. but not me.

If any of you remember, from the onset of the auditions, Simon made a statement that DA would win all this season. Not only have the judges, but the producers as well have shown their support and favoritism for him. With Simon being such a huge part of AI, pretty much what he says, goes. He (Simon) predicted on air early in the season that Kelly, Tasia and Carrie would win, not that they did not deserve to win, they did. But my point is that, the higher ups at AI listen to what Simon says and will support whomever Simon has slated to win. Did Ruben deserve to win? IMHO, no but again, Simon stated that Ruben would win and that some of the votes for Clay were lost or wasn’t counted in enough time to count……..duh, what is wrong with this picture? Believe me, Simon Cowell is more than a mere judge for this show. He carries alot of weight on it. I am not discounting the fact that DA has good vocals, he does as we all know, but as I have stated before, he does not have the maturity to handle something this huge right now. I seriously doubt if he is capable of making a decision on his own, and if he has EVER made one. I can only say that he has the backing to promote him to the win. Oh, but I’m hoping a miracle will happen and DC will take all.

Sayesha seems to be the true natural beauty, and talent but, gets no respect because of comparisons to the current black female market. SUMMARY : This Season is NOT the best finale talent.
