5/15: Syesha Mercado interview: “I want to do everything!”

syesha hometown visit.jpg

Film! Broadway! An album! Books! An organic restaurant! Start a lupus charity foundation!

“I’m real goal oriented,” said Syesha Mercado. who is all about optimism. “I write them down and keep looking at them.” As she later noted, “I want to do everything!”

I noted to her that Paula Abdul twice Tuesday said she sang songs that didn’t define who she is. So I asked— who is she really as an artist? “I’m a mix of a lot of things. I think that’s why people say, ‘She’s Broadway!’ I’m like a black Christina Aguilera or Alicia Keys. I definitely see myself putting together a Christina Aguilera album like the one she recently did [which had Broadway elements in it.] I could do a ‘Diary of Alicia Keys.’ I like pop and I like R&B and I like old-school musicals. I’m growing into an artist and developing. I’m glad I did ‘American Idol.’ You were able to see the transition I went through. I’m still learning about myself every day… People will know who I am.” [As you can see, even she can’t define herself in 25 words or less the way we can the two Davids or Brooke or Jason.]

For my folllowup question, I asked her to clarify her comments equating her own experience to the Civil Rights movement in relation to the Sam Cooke song “A Change is Gonna Come.” I wasn’t sure she was aware that it was a rather uneven comparison and thought she could give us some clarity. My interpetation: she says the song meant something different to her in terms of her own life vs. what the song meant to an entire generation, not that there should even be a comparison per se: “It’s a signature song for the Civil Rights movement. For me, it meant something different. It took on a completely different meaning. It came during a transitional time in history. This is a transitional time for me. For me, a change is gonna come.”

On how she changed during the show: “I consider myself a hard worker. I’m always rehearsing. almost overworking. When I first stepped into the competition, I was in this little shell. I came in with a negative mindframe. It was harming my performances. Over time, I became more comfortable with myself. There’s a fine line between overworking and doing so much, you’re no longer having fun and letting go and taking it all in. I was more satisfied as the weeks went on. I’ve learned how to relax. I learned ways to deal with stress.”

On her dad’s struggles with alcohol and drugs: “It made me the humble person I am. Having my dad struggle made me sad a lot of my life. It made me understand people more. I told myself I won’t let this determine what my future will be. I will help my dad and encourage him. I’m going to make him proud of me so he can make me proud of him. It’s motivated him to stay sober and clean. It’s a beautiful story to tell.”

On wedding bells with her fiance: “I’m a live in the now person. He’s so supportive. We have a mutual understanding. We’ll do it when the time is right.”

On her mindset each week. “I never packed my bags. They told us to do so but I never did because I didn’t want to go home! I talked to my family a lot. They helped me stay strong.”

On singing that “Happy Feet” song My nieces and nephews watch that movie over and over again so I knew it. I h ad to make it as good as I could I’m very positive. Whenever something is in my way, I block it all out. What can I do to turn this into a positive and make the best of it. I tried my very best.”

On her feelings after Tuesday night: “I was like, ‘It’s over.’ I got too many bad comments to keep me t here. But I moved on and made peace with it. I couldn’t feel bad about it. I don’t feel like i failed.”

Other upbeat cliches she uttered. “I’m at peace. Only great things can come from here on out. We don’t know what’s in store for us. I’m proud of being the last girl standing. I’m honored to have had a great opportunity like this.”

As always, Rodney, good job! I think you hit two of the more important questions. I don’t know that Syesha cleared up the Sam Cooke song meaning, but I get it … it’s about change…transition…and this is a time in HER life that is full of change…transition… thus the song is meaningful. Period. I never thought she was really trying to be all political and stuff, LOL.

and you’re right…she IS still defining herself …she’s YOUNG! she’s better-than-average, downright good at times, talented, and combining her strengths (acting PLUS singing) i think she’s due to wow some folks on stage in musical theatre, broadway, whatever.

There’s no denying that Syesha had a very nice, powerful voice, but she was just ‘blah’ for me. She seemed a little too uptight and ‘drama-queen’ish for my liking. I also think she was trying too hard toward the end of the competition: forced, not natural. Just one girl’s opinion.

There’s always an a—hole like like “War Eagle” lurking somewhere in the midst of anything positive.

Syesha is increditably talented and will go very far in her career. It’s evident by the decrease in ratings that many people now view American Idol as nothing more than a popularity contest. We are told the votes are tabulated based on viewers calls, but it can’t be proven. It seems each year they boot off the most talented for the most popular. I tuned in last night just to see her get voted off because I knew it was coming, but actually stopped watching last year.

Hey MS! you may have hit the nail on the head, lol! Syesha IS about “drama” but not in the negative way, IMHO. she belongs on a stage acting & singing … she’s perfect for Broadway, imho! so maybe she WAS just being “herself”!!!

By Belinda

I think Syesha was the most versatile and the best singer of them all. I think the judges was prejudice and just wanted the 2/white boys to be in the running for the title. What kind of song was that for the producers to give her to sing? Also, on her own pick, nothing was wrong with “Fever”, but the judges really downed her. What was the difference with her singing “Fever” and Fantasia singing “Summertime” and Whatever her name was singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow”.

By Making Sense

May 15, 2008 3:00 PM | Link to this

I think popularity SHOULD play a big part in the competition. If popularity wasn’t one of the key factors of “American Idol”, the show should be renamed to “American SINGER”. “Idol” encompasses being talented & yes, attractive, having star quality, AND being popular in the public’s eye. Gotta have the whole package. That’s what sells!

Belinda - I don’t think it’s fair to say the judges are prejudice. First, Randy’s not white. Second, how would you explain, Ruben’s, Fantasia’s, and Jordin’s win? Just something to think about…

Oh and not sure but it may have been on the last thread — whoever dissed Marissa for being “the fat girl” on DWTS — Marissa is a dancer, she’s been on broadway, and she signed up for DWTS to show that you don’t have to be size zero to dance and by god, the girl was good. Did she look like Edita? duh, no of course not. but she was fun, she was talented and by god, she DID show the world you don’t have to be a size zero or two or even six or eight or twelve, to dance! And about your comments on Mario .. he was good in SOME ways, but america voted, and by god, they saw some of the same things i saw…he was too stiff in some areas of dance, fine in others. Perhaps they just liked Marissa’s TOTALLY positive attitude better?

Well they freely admit they are interested in the next American Idol (spelled P-O-P S-T-A-R), not in the best talent. Sometimes you get a good mix. Sometimes you don’t.

It should be a popularity contest as well as singing. But someone like Jason Castro- uh no, but he was popular, so that’s where the contrary comes into play… I believe Syesha did have the whole package, people just didn’t give her enough of a chance in liking her.

Can’t wait til she does something! But I don’t really like broadway for her. It seems so secluded. How will we ever hear from her if she does Broadway. That’s right, we won’t.

Eric…I’m so confused!!! You said:

Obviously popularity has to come into play. If a contestant isn’t popular with the majority of voters, HOW will he/she be popular with the cd buying public????? There are THOUSANDS of good voices out there…something has to separate the marketable from the non-marketable.

and regarding getting lost if she goes “on broadway” … just because some people don’t pay attention to musical theatre doesn’t mean everyone doesn’t … ever heard of Barbra Streisand? Judy Garland? Joan Jett? (i’m serious) i know those are days gone by, but those are some i can think of off the top of my head… Sarah Brightman? ummmm too many more for me to pull them out of the scrambled brains …

By Really sweet person who will go far

May 15, 2008 3:38 PM | Link to this

It really doesn’t matter who “wins,” they get exposure and if they’re truly talented then they’re off and running. I think Syesha seems like a genuinely nice person who has gone thru some hard times with her father’s struggles and also, judging from her interest in lupus, she must have a family member who has that horrible illness. All those things make you a deeper and more compassionate person. She is very blessed to have the love and support of her family, which helped her get as far as she did and I don’t think she will give up anytime soon.

By Negativo

Neg is satisfied with Sayesha’s civil rights answer. She’s not being a militant race activist, just a young girl feeling lyrics in a personal way. Case closed on that one. Linny and Deirdre were right!

BTW, I honestly think in some ways she was just too good for this competition. Her talent was very wide-ranging, diverse, subtle, and not in just the “cute” way that the tweeners could understand.

She was the adult in a children’s popularity contest. Look out, she’s going to be huge in a few years.

Belinda do you not realize there has never been a white male American Idol? And Making Sense also made a very strong arguement for you to think about. Please rethink your comments.

As much as I love Syesha, she is in the same catagory as Fantasia. Actaully she IS better than Fantasia, but the same. Great voice (when used correctly which apparetnly Fantasia forgot how to do last night) and both going to be great on Broadway. What David Cook and David A bring to the table is something different than the previous winners. Sure there have been other contestants like them, but not at this stage in the contest.

David A. does have a good voice but does he have it to be the next big thing? I don’t think so. I can see him being the next solo version of the boy bands. He is awesome for ballads but I don’t think his voice is strong enough to do more.

David C. also has a great voice. Does he have it in him to be the next big thing? I think he may. His voice is strong enough to pull off many different types of music. And he is creative enough.

Back to Syesha…she is going to be great at whatever opportunity is around the corner and she is going to make a change in this world. And it will be a change for the good. I for one can’t wait to see what is next for her.

Apparently, finding herself meant turning herself from a confident young woman with an “edgy” look - stand-up hair and her own sense of style - into a Barbie-doll template with hair extensions and a sex kitten attitude. After she had been in the bottom 3 a couple of times, she completely changed who she was and started wearing slinky outfits and going for the sexy vote.

I think her biggest problem was that she always went for the big “diva” song, rather than trying something more in her range and experience.

Her last 2 performances on Tuesday seemed like she really was pushing for a future on the stage. The difference between her singing “Fever” and the earlier “Summertime” and “Over the Rainbow” performances is that the other two were really good, and hers was very theatrical, but only okay vocally. Instead of singing the chorus and belting them out, she sang it mostly out of her head, so it was more light and airy than sultry.

Is it just me, or does David Archuletta’s mother look like Syesha?

I had to do a double take.

Syesha is a beautiful lady with a fabulous talent. Her range is better than both of the David’s. What she lacks is the ability to arrange songs or to seek out really different updated arrangements of the songs she sang. I believe AI is no longer looking for the best singer. They are looking for the best arranger, with a unique sound and a stage presence, one that will appeal to more than one generation of music lovers. Personality seems to matter the least. I think the top two is probably correct based on that criteria. In my opinion the best singers in the top 12 were Carly, Syesha and David Hernandez. My personal taste leans toward Brooke White (minus the stop and restarting). She wasn’t the best singer, but I would be most likely to buy her type of music than the others.

I’m really surprised that no one has commented on the comparison Syesha made of herself to Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys.

Syesha is a totally different artist from Christina and Alicia. Syesha is a versatile performer, but I do not believe she has the chops to be a pop star like Christina and Alicia are.

Maybe it was just me but I did not enjoy it when Syesha tried to hit high notes. To me she sounded like she was shrieking.

Yes, Syesha does have a powerful voice, but she has an ego problem if she thinks she is in the same league as Christina and Alicia.

I always find it interesting when the race card is played. It was played in 2004 when Jennifer Hudson (one of the “three divas”) exited the show before John Stevens and Diana DeGarmo, and it is being played now by at least one person on this blog regarding the exit of Syesha.

Personally, I did feel a little bit uncomfortable when the judges seemed to be favoring the two Davids over Syesha with their comments on the competition on Tuesday night. It seemed they “wanted” a David-David finale. It’s kind of like basketball. Most people want to see a Celtics-Lakers final. However, if you go back listen to the performances from Tuesday night with an unbiased ear, I think you will find that the two Davids simply performed better than Syesha. And if you look at what each of the three has done week in and week out, the two Davids clearly have been the most consistent performers. Remember, Syesha was in the bottom three or the bottom two a few times. Neither of the Davids have been in the bottom three or the bottom two.

I also find it interesting that every poll you see lists David Cook as the favorite, but Vegas still has David Arculeta picked to win it. I think Vegas has it right. The people who vote in the polls typically vote once and that’s it. However, the outcome will be determined based on the number of calls a contestant receives, and I think David Archuleta has the clear advantage there.

Good morning ya’ll. I have a question… does it seem like it is a very short season for the “regular” TV shows this year. Gray’s Anatomy, House, Bones, etc. are having their season finales next week. Not sure about Lost - sorry, I’ve actually never watched that one.

Morning mushblogians!

Dawn….the writers’ strike has shortened the season. It’s ending around the right time but we haven’t seen as many shows as usual.

I loved the season finale of The Office last night.

Lost started it’s, I believe, 2 part/3 hour season finale last night, too. It won’t be on next week because of the Grey’s Anatomy 2 hour finale but it will be on in 2 weeks with a 2 hour season finale.

Did any of that make sense?

Well, at least with shorter seasons it should be cheaper to buy the DVDs. At least one can hope.

Earlier someone commented that there had been no white male winner of Idol and it was pointed out that Taylor Hicks won. It’s easy to understand how the first poster made a mistake: Taylor Hicks is pretty forgettable.

I’m definitely hoping for a DC win. DA seems like a nice kid, but he could use a bit of seasoning. And he needs to lose the influence of his stage dad, imo.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

i guess, without giving too much away … my biggest question right now is how the O-6 get from where they are scattered now [on the island/freighter] to where i would suppose they’d be to get where we presume they’ll be from the flashforwards.

and OMG i’ve never seen any Bam Boom Blast movie with THAT much C4 in one place!!!!!! holy catfish!!!

By Deirdre

May 16, 2008 9:30 AM | Link to this

Lost…do not read if you haven’t seen last night’s show yet. I was relieved when Jack was told that Claire is his sister. That explains a lot when Jack says to Kate, “Your son???? You’re not even related to him.”

There are so many questions to be answered and I’m pretty sure they won’t all be answered in the season finale. But, we’ve definitely learned some things….like how Sayid was reunited with Nadia, why Hugo knows…in future time..that they’re still in trouble(the ‘numbers’ return)that the settlement they received from Oceanic Airlines was substantial enough for Sun to buy a controlling stake in her dad’s company. The suggestion is that the freighter is going to blow up possibly killing Michael, Desmond and Jin…so that would would mean it isn’t Michael in the coffin. My next guess is Charles Widmore…who seems to be the main catalyst for EVERYTHING.

But I’m just guessing cuz it’s fun to speculate! :-)

Lost comments - do not read if you did’t watch last night

Would Sun’s comment to her father that “Two men are responsible for Jin’s death, and you are one” possibly refer to Charles Widmore? Will she become a ruthless businesswoman who will seek to take down the Widmore dynasty? this could get interesting, LOL

and it was great to see Sayid reunited with Nadia — at least THAT was a sweet scene which unfortunately we know doesn’t last.

OK, explain this, tho, D — we saw last night that Reyes tries to give Hugo the camaro but he refuses to be in it when he sees the numbers, right? so… how does that jive with him driving it LAST week when the police chased him down? i guess we will have to wait and see what the connection is!!!

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 16, 2008 9:51 AM | Link to this

Lost

D, only reason I can imagine is that by moving the island, the people are protected from Widmore et al from further attack, but if he knows they still live, he might try again? that seems really mundane compared to the rest of the show, so it’s probably totally wrong, LOL!

And we have to keep in mind that the writers have already said that here isn’t a ‘real world’ explanation for everything…just most things.

The hard-nosed Asian guy from the freighter…is it Miles….is rapidly becoming one of mu favorite characters…just the fact that he’s so ok with communicating with dead people….and so grouchy!!! I just love him whenever he shows up!

Is it Tuesday yet? I’m looking forward to the big show, and also to the season being over.

I think we should make it a point to be more outrageous and offensive on this blog. It seems to me that civility is always bad for ratings. Look at how a little fighting got things going on the last thread.

Who’s with me?

I feel the same way JT this season seems to have dragged on a bit even though the overall talent was better than in seasons past. I guess we are just over the initial excitement of the show.

KPH I agree, and I don’t feel as burned out as I did last year. So there is still hope in me for the next season.

Negativo, your opinion offends me!

KPH, this is a big problem for Idol. Quite frankly, nobody sees a real difference in winning Idol vs coming in the top 5 in regards to what it means for theior career. If you think about it, only 2 Idol winners hit the big time (Kelly and Carrie), 3 have completely bombed (Reuban, Taylor, Fantasia), while Jordan looks like she’ll fall somewhere in between the losers and the megastars.

What does that mean? It means we don’t care who wins Idol because the runner-ups are just as likely to be successful as the winners. Idol knows this, and that’s why they are praying that Cook wins, because if it’s Arch, well, it will be another commercial failure for Idol and might be a death blow for the show.

Neg, I would be outrageous with you, but can’t because my daughter is taking me out later to celebrate the last day of being 47 yrs. old. I don’t want to get a year older, so I won’t be celebrating tomorrow.

Harmony: It doesn’t matter how old you are, it only matters that you get really drunk on your birthday.

I hear Ya Neg. David A. wont sell as well as David C. so therfore I hope cook wins at least that will help the show stay afloat. I have been out of pocket for a few day’s so I havent been able to comment on Fantasia’s performance the other night. I just have one question. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? That girl has gone crazy! Did you guy’s see the look on Simon’s face while she was on stage? That was exactly how my Wife and I felt. It was so strange when it was over we just looked at each other with that same expression on our faces. LOL!

Remember that commercial about “this is your brain on drugs”? Well, that is an example of your brain being a ho on crack. What an embarassment for everybody involved…Latoya London must have looked at that display and laughed her ASS off how this pathetic skank was the winner of American Idol instead of her!

Thanks KPH, I’ll take your advise and try to age gracefully, there is nothing I can do to stop the process anyway.

With age comes wisdom, so I urge all of you youngsters to listen to us older, wiser folks and vote COOK!

If Archie wins he will be the next Ruben. Forever outshined by the person he beat, and doomed to live a life of obscurity. David A – the worst top two finisher ever.

KPH, I found a picture of Fantasia’s performance and had it as my desktop background for a while. I couldn’t take it for very long and had to change it. I kept with the rooster theme and found a picture of Rooster Cogburn, much easier on the eyes.

Did y’all hear this? Another Idol hits Broadway:

Taylor Hicks will make his Broadway debut on June 6, playing Teen Angel in “Grease” at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

Taylor Hicks said being in New York for three months will allow him to continue working on his next CD. He’s been writing songs and recording demos in Nashville, Hicks said, and hopes to release a new single in the fall.

The Hoover native and former “American Idol” winner, 31, will perform in the musical through Sept. 7. Hicks plans to announce his Broadway run on television this morning, on NBC’s “The Today Show.”

“I’m honored for the opportunity to experience Broadway,” Hicks said Thursday. “I feel blessed and excited.”

He’ll appear in one number in the musical, singing “Beauty School Dropout.” That’s traditional for his character, a hip guardian angel who makes a showy appearance in Act II, offering advice to a teen named Frenchy.

“This particular part, Teen Angel, really allows me to put my toe in the water and test the waters,” Hicks said. “I’ve always been a little over the top, so this is perfect for me.”
