5/20: Top 2 Idol performance show, Josiah Leming signs deal
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“Idol” is playing up the “boxing” metaphors to the hilt, aren’t they? You’d think they were going to have to sing “Eye of the Tiger”!
In the end, it was one of the better top 2 performance shows. But we know who came out to really win this: David Archuleta. Cook was solid but could it be that Archuleta wants this victory just a bit more? Archuleta’s pick of that very self-centered song “In This Moment” says everything. He wants that moment tomorrow night. And you know? He might just get it.
Personally, I still prefer Cook but it’s hard to be upset if Archuleta takes it home. He has earned this. And we can always rationalize that, like Daughtry, Cook doesn’t need this win to succeed.
Good news for Cook fans: he seems to be comfortably ahead in dialidol.com. Maybe all that Archuleta pimping by Simon fueled the Cook lovers to dial heavily. But dialidol doesn’t include text messaging votes, which might push Archuleta ahead.
[And “Dancing With the Stars” had its results tonight, too. Early favorite Kristi Yamaguchi won, the second gal to win it in six cycles.]
And surprise! Ruben showed up at the end to sing “Celebrate Me Home.” Woohoo!
Cook’s first song (“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2,” Clive’s pick) - A great song choice for Cook, who can do spirituals well. He opens strong and brings some Bono-like swagger as goes onto the stage behind the judge’s table. In this case, I really wanted him to sing the entire song, not the truncated “Idol’ version. Good job. Randy: “It was a great way to start this dual of 2007. (huh? 2007?)” Paula: “David Cook has arrived. Amen, amen. You are in great voice tonight.” Simon: “I can see you at top of this show. Looked very tense and emotional. Taking that together, it was phenomenal.” A/A-minus
Archuleta’s first song (“Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” by Elton John, Clive’s pick) —Â Clive has given Archuleta a calling card song that Clay Aiken did five years ago. That’s going to be tough to top. You have to wonder if Clive picked it on purpose to see if he can match Clay. But with that tough comparison, it’s clear he doesn’t have the vocal depth of Clay. It’s another solid Archuleta performance but didn’t knock my socks off. I gave it a second listen after the following effusive comments and yes, he does a wonderful vocal job. Maybe the song is just a bit overdone for me, hard for me to feel moved. Randy: “Doesn’t matter what happens. This is one of the best performances all season. That was flawless and unbelievably molten hot.” [Huh?] Paula: “My heart’s still pounding. The sun is never going to go down on you.” [Is Paula going to make comments based on the song titles all night?] Simon: “It’s very easy to get overexcited tonight. Last week, you were okay. I thought tonight’s performance was arguably the best you’ve done so far. Round one goes to Archuleta.” B-plus
Cook’s second song (“Dream Big,” songwriter’s pick) - He adds his vintage grunge feel to a song with an incredibly mundane message. Musically, he picked a suitable song from the dreck for him. He did about as good a job given the circumstances. Randy: “The song was just okay for me. But you were singing your face off.” Paula: “It was a great way to take a song we don’t know and fall in love with it.” SImon: “It was a bit of a lightweight. The end of okay. You made the most of what you have. It didn’t feel like a winning moment for me. That was a 6.5 out of 10.” A-minus
Archuleta’s second song (“In This Moment,” songwriter’s pick) - This craptastic ballad feels interminable. This is not to be mistaken for “A Moment Like This.” And it won’t be. I’m hoping one of those sorority girls grabs Archuleta’s ankles. “I want to stay in this moment,” he sings. “Nobody can take it away.” Well, except the voters. I do have to give him credit. He felt the song, believed the lyrics, sold it well. Randy: “The song I wasn’t crazy about. You are so in the zone, you could sing the phone book.” Paula: “Another heartfelt performance. It’s like pure magic.” Simon: “I loved the egotistical lyric. Fantastically self centered. You chose the better song. Much more in keeping with the night. Round two goes to David Archuleta.” A-minus
Cook’s third song (“The World I Know,” by Atlanta’s Collective Soul, contestant’s choice) - He saved the song from last week. It’s a lovely tune but is it a showstopper? I’m not so sure. He slows down an already thoughtful, pensive tune. He does a lovely job but that wasn’t a great way to end the night for him because it simply didn’t hit that emotional punch (using the silly boxing metaphors.) Randy: “That’s the sensitive side of David Cook. You can make this record and get by. Very nice job dude.” Paula: “I looked up at you and you’re standing in your truth and delivering unbelievable songs with integrity… I truly applaud you.” SImon: “You are actually one of the nicest, most sincere contestants we had. I thought that was a beautiful song but I’m going to be honest but the wrong song choice for you. What you should done is sung ‘Billie Jean’ or ‘Hello.’ ” “For me, it’s a progression. Why do something I’ve already done?” Cook said. I give him points for doing something new. B-plus/A-minus
Archuleta’s third song (“Imagine” by John Lennon, contestant’s choice) - Archuleta plays it safe with what he thought was his best performance. Can you blame him? He’s in it to win this and goes with his strongest, um, hook. (I know, I know, stop the boxing metaphors!) Strategically, he wants his teen fans to text, text, text, and this should properly inspire them. Subtle and powerful. Positions him well for the victory. Randy: “You are so good tonight. You’re exactly what this show is about.” Paula: “It’s the culmination David. You’ve left me speechless like when you first sang the song.” Simon: “We’ve taken a little bit of stick, this competition. This show is about finding a star. I think we’ve witnessed one of the great finals. In my opinion, David, you came out here tonight to win. What we have witnessed is a knockout.” (Okay, Simon did the final boxing metaphor, not me!) A
Tonight’s show will feature three songs each: one picked by Clive Davis, one the songwriters’ competition winner and one pick by the contestant. David Archuleta will reprise his “Imagine.” He will also perform last, winning the game toss. (He looked to his dad in the audience for guidance.) Surely, Jeff Archuleta knew that the ultimate winner sang second five out of six times.
Is it smart for Archuleta to do an old song or to go for another one? It’s the safe choice, that’s for sure.
-As for the National Enquirer rumors about Jeff Archuleta trying to sign a side endorsement deal for his son have not been substantiated in any more reputable pubs.
And here’s a cool factoid from the story:
The average age of songs sung this year (31.5 years) is the oldest to date and six years older than those in 2007, according to Idol database whatnottosing.com.
MJ also says each David got to pick their favorite out of the top 10 vote-getting songs in the songwriting contest. Good idea!
Tomorrow’s finale will reprise that Celine/Dion live/dead duet with another live/dead combo. They tried to do that with a dead Marvin Gaye and a live Mariah Carey for “Idol Gives Back” but for whatever reason, couldn’t do it. Ryan Seacrest interviews Nigel Lythgoe on his Los Angeles radio show.
-CMT reports that Carrie Underwood will perform her latest single “Last Name” on the finale.
-Scores of former “Idol” contestants converged at a pre-finale party in Los Angeles. EW reports that Ace Young sang five songs.. Among others seen:* Jon Peter Lewis, Chris Sligh, Chris Richardson, Brandon Rogers, Kevin Covais, Justin Guarini, Gina Glocksen, Nadia Turner and Bo Bice.*
-And if you want to chew over a fresh topic— ew.com did a poll for most over-rated “Idol” this year and Jason Castro won, followed by Archuleta. Agree? Disagree?
-Josiah Leming, the talented Tennessee kid who lived in his car and just missed the top 24, has signed a record and publishing deal with Warner Brothers.
-USA Today has a survey broken up by age groups. Cook wins handily, 71 percent. Teens are the only ones favoring Archuleta 58-42. Cook’s strongest demo is 30-39, who supported him 78 percent. And while the rest of us plebes didn’t get any time with the Davids, USA Today (with its 2 million plus readers in print and many more online) got a few quotes.
“I’ve tried not to pay attention to what everybody has been saying. I’ve just wanted to stay myself. I didn’t want anything to get to my head,” Archuleta says, although raves for Imagine in the semifinals had him concerned he might be seen as peaking too early.
Cook says he was fortunate to avoid early scrutiny. “I kind of liked coming in without all the buzz. It allowed me a couple of weeks to find myself,” he says. “Each week, my goal was just, ‘Don’t take last.’ So now I’ve kind of run out of options.”
Lythgoe in the story also said instruments are here to stay, and so are the judges and host.
-With “Extra,” Cowell thinks Cook will win, though it will depend on song choice tonight, he said. He also pulled his punches on Fantasia’s “hot mess” performance last Wednesday: “Fantasia’s a great girl. She doesn’t take herself too seriously. And whether you liked it or hate that performance, at least it was something you could talk about and that’s what I miss.” True—it was hard not to take your eyes off of Fantasia!

great, just all i wanted to see, another live/dead fakeoff…. NOTHING will compare to the Nat/Natalie Cole video, so why do they keep trying???
and D…re Clive… i don’t think anyone ever said he was “out” of it entirely, just that he wasn’t as much involved as previously…i’m trying to remember where, way back, i read or heard that, but with MY memory….hmph…good luck with THAT!

Ages 20 to 29 Archuleta: 31% Cook: 69%
Ages 30 to 39 Archuleta: 22% Cook: 78%

I am not looking forward to the dead/ live performance. I agree, no one can compete with the Natalie/ Nat King Cole performance. The connection in that one between father and daughter would be hard to ever match again.
Anyone have any idea who is first or second tonight? Also, do they have 3 numbers each?

Hey everybody,
Depending on how much of the song he sings, Imagine may not be the best song for David A. Given that the south has a strong voting block, “imagine there’s no heaven, no religion too” might cost him some votes.
Here’s hoping anyway! Anything that would keep the most overrated idol ever from winning!

Steeler - David A. left the “imagine there’s no heaven…” verse out of the song the 1st time he sang it. I suspect that he would do the same tonight, just to play it safe. Then again, who knows which way “daddy dearest” will sway him?

Got an observation folks…want to see if anyone else is noticing…doesn’t look like DC wants to win, does it? It would be the SMARTEST approach to this finale. He’s trying, but the songs aren’t matching with his voice and he’s not really bringing it full on. I’m thinking that he doesn’t want to deal with the inherent teenybop pop stuff he’ll have to deal with if he won. Is it just me, or does anyone else sense this as well?

Last song. Both can sing and David Cook will be singing and selling for a long time whether he wins or not. David A. won’t sell as well but since both get contracts, Sony wins either way. Cook was great on his last song. Emotion got to him knowing it was his last on the show. Good point by David not to sing something he had already done like Simon wanted him to do… Little David doing a repeat will be safe for him. He is not the Beatles and I didn’t really care that much for it.

The fix is on. I think the producers want David A to win since he would most benefit from the American Idol boost and David C. would rather be a “free spirit” and not have to put up with all the crap they have to deal with.
Just watching Ruben sing, and the dude still weighs about 350. Like him but I am worried for him. He might eat David A backstage before realizing he isnt a pig in a blanket…

I’m sorry, but if Archie is so into the song Imagine, why doesn’t he sing the entire song. He ignores the first two verses as they are against his religion, but that is the real meaning of the song. I hope Cook wins. Archie has an amazing voice, but he has no personality.

Well that was a totally underwhelming final. The two best songs were the Clive davis selection, and then it went downhill fast, and ended with a an Archie SNOOZEFEST.
David Cook - I Still Haven’t Found what I’m Looking For - Excellent choice by Clive, and a wonderful Performance by Cookie.
David Archuleta - Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Possibly Archie’s best performance of the year, and a Tie with Cook for best of the night.
David Cook - The World I Know - Absolutely Beautiful understated vocal by Cookie. great song, but he should have chosen a ROCKER in this slot.
David Cook - Dream Big - Cookie salvaged what he could from this dog of a song. Absolutely inane lyrics, but I did like the beat and grunge vibe David gave it.
David Archuleta - Imagine - Imagine this song ending, it is going way too long. I think my ears are bleeding, from this d** song. Archie took a slow balled, and SLOWED IT DOWN EVEN MORE. BLECH.
David Archuleta - In This Moment - ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!! Huh, wha…. Sleep inducing suckage of a song.
Round One, the Clive Davis picks I had a tie, but Round Two and three go to David Cook mainly because I was at least able to stay awake during his performances.
Oh, for the days of Ruben vs Clay or Carrie vs Bo… Because this “heavyweight” bout was a DOG!

David Cook picked a TERRIBLE song to finish. I am a big Collective Soul fan but that was not the song to wrap up the season. He should have put another spin on a popular song and he would have coasted to victory. He could have picked countless other songs from Pearl Jam, Sublime, Radiohead(Creep), or so many others to close out strong. What a major DISAPPOINTMENT. I think a taste of success went straight to his head.

Uh ok. thought so…
1a) David Cook “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”- Randy said, “nice way to start the dual of 2007!” Yes, it was. Wait, what?? 2007? Get it straight Mr. Jackson. Nice performance, but just OK at that moment.
2a) David Archuleta “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”- Man, when it started I said whoopee, same old same old, then I was wowed…this was certainly one of his bests and the judges summed it up for me.
Round one for me: David Archuleta.
1b) David Cook “Dream Big”- I liked the performance, but yeah, it definitely wasn’t a winner’s song. I’m 100% shocked at Simon’s NON-biasedness. Usually it’s beaming at this point, so I figured it’d come on the last song, let it be great.
2b) David Archuleta “In This Moment”- Another fairly good one! Man I’m proud of this kid and it’s weird saying that because I’m basically the same age as him, almost. I regret what I said about him losing to Syesha, though I still want her in the finals there. Just couldn’t work out I guess. Again with Simon and the non-biasedness. I’m shocked. Next is “Imagine”. He’s sure to win now.
Round 2 for me: Tied.
1c) David Cook “The World I Know”- I think this is one of his bests. Simon Cowell: I am shocked with you! This would be one of those flashbacks to the past couple weeks when one moment Paula was lovin’ Syesha, then totally turned on her the next week. Ok guys, I may loan a couple votes, or non, cause he sure ain’t gonna win after this next song. Sorry Cook- I feel for you. Sad, but either way I was fine with the winner out of the 2, just so darn predictable…
3c) David Archuleta “Imagine”- Haha, smart that this came last. Thought I was hoping for a Cook victory, I guess Archuleta will take the title now….. Good job once again. I’m down with his win I suppose. I mean it’s best to declare him winner anyway, because we don’t want Mr. Jeffy there to blow up the Nokia Theater tomorrow night, now, do we? And I mean that litterally. Randy mentioned, or perhaps yelled, that this show is all about finding the best singer. Oh really Randy? Then why were y’all pimping Hicks to win over Katharine McPhee in the finals a couple of years ago? Huh? No explanation?
Round 3- Tied.
Congrats Davids! (But this final was no different than any other!)
Looking forward to tomorrow.

I honestly won’t feel bad for DC if he doesn’t win. I suspect he will be better off if he isn’t up the a$$ of AI. I figure DA will make his little CD which will sell about 200,000 copies and we will only hear about him on an episode of Idols-Where Are They Now. Can you see him on a stage like Clarkson or Underwood. It’s just laughable.

Songluvr, I don’t think anyone would disagree that DA has a great voice. However, he seems to only sing slow boring songs. He has no personality and no versatility. This is my first post although I have been reading all season. I am really disappointed in this finale. Why can’t the damn judges keep their mouths shut for one night? We all know what they think. We are at the point now where the audience can make an independent decision without hearing their expert BS. Archuletta is a great singer but he is a one trick pony, another Clay Aiken or if he is really lucky another Michael Buble. Cook has the singing ability along with the musical talent sustain a long successful career. I have no plans to ever purchase any music from David Archuletta but have already download Davd Cook’s music and will continue to do so. I wish AI would have left the kiddie’s on AI Junior.

I do think Simon was right about Cookie’s last song. It would have been phenomenal if he had taken some random love song and cooked it his way … I know the song is tired by now but imagine him doing ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ I get chills just thinking about it.

I feel that (regardless of who was better) the judges should keep their comments to themselves at this point. Let the audience and the final two enjoy the night without hearing from them. Everyone knows both of these guys are talented and at this point who really cares about who gives the better performance on one given night. I am voting based on my preference of all performances collectively, all season long. I prefer David Cook even though David Archuletta may have sang better tonight. I also feel David Cook is the more talented performer. ….and I heard Simon was on TV saying the David Cook should win. Makes me wonder if they aren’t using a little psychology on the audience by overly praising Archuletta.

I’ve been lurking here a long time, but tonight I just have to jump in because I’m so disgusted! 1)I will concede that little Archie has a decent voice and that he did well on his FIRST song.
2)I did think for a brief moment that Cook might have done himself more justice with something stronger on the last song, although I support his choice not to do a repeat. 3)Cook was still awesome on the 1st and 3rd songs and did great with what he had to work with on the 2nd. 4)Good voice or not, Archie was boring on the 2nd and 3rd songs. NOTHING different than all season. And IMHO not better than Cook.
Having said all that - the judges ride on the Archuletta pimpwagon was sickening!!!! Archie needs to sing the psychiatrist phone numbers out that phone book, so Randy can get help with his obsession with him!

Wow you people on here are unbelievably biased. I’ll give Cook his dues because he usually does really well and will have a fantastic career. But the way you all bash Archuletta is ridiculous. He has a fantastic voice and he is NOT boring. Archuletta clearly, hands down won the night. There wasn’t even a comparison. For a 17 yr old, his voice is well beyond his age and he knocked Cook out with his vocals tonight. It was his best night of the entire competition.
Just for the record, I’m a 25 year old fan of Archuletta not some teeny bopper.
I’ll be fine with Cook winning but Archuletta was just clearly the best.

C’MON PEOPLE! realistically, if you have to PAY to watch only one concert for either Cook or Archie, which one would you spend your money on and confidently know that you’ll be entertained by it??? Cook has much more stage presence and showmanship than Archie. He also has that raspy “Sting” voice and definitely has his own style going for him. Archie on the other hand hits all the notes - dead on. But he just stands there and his dynamics are so predictable and boring. Kinda like Josh Grobin (spellcheck?) Ergo, he’s good for singing the theme songs in Disney movies and I predict Cook will be the next concert king! Now is it just me or did I see Archie’s dad’s eyes change into dollar signs??? I don’t know. Stage parents like him reminds me of Britney and we know what happened to her.

This is a singing contest and if voted on as such, David A. should win hands down. But, it seems as if AI has turned into a popularity contest and vocals come in second so David C. will win.
By Karen

AI is a way to find the next star. You have to have audience appeal in order to be a star. You have to be popular with the CD-buying, concert-going public to really make it. Archie can sing but it takes more than just a voice. His ‘ahh shucks, do you really think I’m good’ response over and over again makes me cringe. AI is set to vote for your “favorite” so therefore popularity does matter.

I watch idol every season and always vote for the person I would go see in concert or buy their music. Although David A has the voice, he has no personality and very boring to watch. I would not buy his music nor would I pay to see him in concert. David C has a great voice, sex appeal, stage presence and a personality. Therefore, David C gets my vote all the way. Have picked him #1 since the top 12. Do we all remember Chris Daughtry!!! GO DAVID C!!!!

Most over rated contestant of the year - Jason Castro by far - every week I could not believe he was still in it - that was a popularity vote. Next - David A. - decent voice but next in line for most over rated. Teeny boppers loved him - my girls are 16 and love David Cook and could not see themselves buying David A music or paying to see him in concert YET!!!

That was the cheesiest most Godawful show I have ever seen. The whole sport/boxing thing was so ridiculous. I don’t think I will be watching next year even when they announce “This is the most talented group ever in AI history” The show has lost it’s credibility this year with the obvious cheerleading to David Archuletta who is mediocre at best.

We voted BIG TIME for COOK! He is so outstanding! Very good entertainer! Cook has the WHOLE package… I love how he changes up old songs and each one seems different. I’d buy his CD in a heartbeat just like we bought Chris’s! Archeletta is great but I’d watch him on TV that’s it. I would not buy his CD I get very sleepy listening to him. I did not like how they acted towards Cook at all last night that was so Tacky makes me not want to watch Idol anymore. Cook is Bad A** and ole Clive would make way more $ with DC over DA there no doubt about that!

well from all the different sites I’ve been to and all the reading of many blogs and opinions, the News etc.. it SEEMS that Cook is quite the popular one! yay… I’d almost swear if it goes to Archeletta then what they were doing last night was simply preparing everyone for DA’s win regardless. First of all we MUST remember this is a singing contest. That being said David A. should win. He really earned it. Yes he’s boring to watch, but he’ll get better with experience. His voice is magical.
David Cook is NOT SEXY. He screams his song. My ears are bleeding. He may have more experience. Kind of obvious, but that dude looks dirty and just really disgusting to me. And those yellow teeth. He looks creepy.
AI is kind of turning into a joke. Getting kind of boring. It entertains, but it’s kind of time for the curtain to CLOSE.

Elainer7 come on we know David A can sing… but even the judges said it should be a great performer someone the public wants too watch, listen to and can entertain. Archie sings wonderfully I would enjoy him driving down the road on a long long trip…you know like John Denver singing Sunshine on My Shoulders or some old time song you sing in your car out loud on a long haul. But that’s about it for me and Archie. David Cook however I would completely enjoy listening to on the radio as well as BUYING his CD and one day even seeing him in Concert. I don’t think this is just a VOCALS contest. Archeletta has OUTSTANDING vocals and I didn’t vote him once.

Glad to see DC in the Green on Dialidol, now we wait and hope the texting tweeners didn’t skew the vote Lil archie’s way.
I do have to give Archie some credit though, the kid cam loaded for bear last night. His “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” was by far his best performance of the year, and his other two were solid vocal performances even though they were excrutiatingly slow and boring.
I was underwhelmed with David Cook’s two song choices, I realize he probably didn’t have much to work with on the Idol Songs, but the last song was a completely horrible pick.
While his performance was great, Collective Soul is too introsepctive and laid back for a FINAL SONG. David has electrified all year with power performances, picking an understated melodic tune to finish was not a smart choice. All he did was set up a Battle of the Ballads, and Archie will win that every time. I agree with picking something Different and not something he already sang, but he should have gone uptempo and rocked the house down.

Both Davids are very talented, however, “Archie” needs a couple more years of seasoning. He’s more suited for Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel right now. I can’t “imagine” buying his record, but I might buy Cook’s.

I doubt that they will be specific about vote count, Tina but they WILL tell us the total vote count and then hint at the difference between them which will give us a pretty good idea.
And re blogs and other sites…a study was done recently that pointed out that blogs are not good at predicting winners. They tend to favor someone other than the eventual winner.
Very few of us picked Jordin to win last year…although a lot were on board the Taylor train the year before….we were pretty much tied between Carrie and Bo.

oh my I did not know that about the other sites and their predictions thanks deirdre…that sorta stinks cause yeah I so didn’t think Jordin when she won. Although I knew many people absolutely loved her voice and she could seriously hold a note but so many blogs etc and people including myself loved that beatbox dude! I actually wish they’d put him on the show or other shows he was very entertaining!! Well I guess then we’ll see tonight. from the sounds of it though many people voted all…4 hours for Cook! either way they both are very good and both will go far. Oh Hey I think they both get a car tonight right! ( : Very cool! Lastly Clide would be wise to offer DC somethin if he doesn’t win. This is definitely a nail bitter people…..

Mike….I agree with everything you said. Archie showed up wanting to win and he did everything possible to make that happen. When he finished his first song, my only thought was ‘uh oh’. He was in excellent voice last night and, if he’d sung that way all season, I might have voted differently.
However, he’s such a non-entity on camera…so inexpressive(even in some of his songs), so very, very immature that I fear for him if he wins. I don’t believe for a minute that he’s ready for what is about to happen to him even if he comes in second.
David Cook finds the heart and soul of a song and sends it out to his listeners. He’s ready!

Good Morning to All!!!!!!!
Missed you guys. Been in LaGrange with Dad who fell last week and broke his hand and has 18 staples in his head. Wished I could convince him to come and live with me. Then I got food poisoning. What a hard last few days I have spent. All is much better now.
Now for the topic at hand, AI. Why oh why do the judges continue to glorify Archie? Sure the kid is talented and has great vocals, but for the life of me, I can not see him as the next AI. Let me just say before I get bashed, Archie is a great singer, good kid and I do like him, but not as an AI. IMHO, he DOES NOT have the maturity that is needed to take on the responsibility of such a role of this magnitude. If he places second, this will give him (or should)the experiences needed to handle the ins and outs of a professional performer. He has alot of growing up and living experiences to do that is much needed. At 17, one just does not have the life experiences of one that is even 8 years older has. From all that I have read and heard about Archie, he has never had the chance to live a normal child life and has been sheltered way to much. A person has to be able to handle the pitfalls as well as the rewards and I honestly think that Archie has not had that opportunity. His father has been to busy making Archie a star, even if Archie himself may not want it. It has most likely been instilled in his mind that this is what he wants and was put on this earth to do and he does not know any different. We who are parents know that we can and do influence our children’s lives. I am just saying that David A has to take hold of his life sooner or later and break away from daddy dearest.
Now on to DC: I was able to get through 27 times last night. True his songs and vocals were not as good as DA last night, but I think he is the person to take the crown tonight. One can only hope and pray.

I am a true David Cook fan, although I do think Archie has a very good voice. My real concern is that I don’t know that Archie is mature enough to handle the fame … win or lose! This is not a critique of his singing … but of his mental health. And I’m not saying that to bash him. He seems to be very immature for 17, both physically and mentally. Although I really, really want Cook to win, it might be best if Archie did because he would be under the “thumb” so to speak of AI. This might be a good thing while he is maturing in his art.
Just a thought!

There are some things that I just don’t understand. They constantly talk about relativity. Is this going to be played on the radio today? Nothing that Monchichi sang all season would be considered Top 40 radio friendly. However, just about everything Cook did was. That is not me being biased, that is just how it is. Last night showed that to be all so true again. Clive Davis picks songs for the 2 singers, and he picks something already done by Clay for little Archie? The boy does not have that kind of vocal strength to compete. Yet, Cook brings a feeling to his song, where I really do think I would hear that on Q100 or Star94 anytime.
I am going to apologize now, this may be long, maybe I should break it up into two posts?
All season long I have watched Archie’s “Quirks” for lack of a better term. In past seasons, the contestants have been reprimanded for these things….you make strange faces, quit closing your eyes, stuff like that. They even got onto Carly for her “mean looks”. But not once did you ever hear criticism about David A and his constant lip licking, his eye closing, his heavy breathing and the smacking while listening to the judges speak. Also, wasn’t Melinda chastised for her humbleness? But Archie was never brought to rug for this….are they afraid to hurt the little boy’s feelings?
I will do my thoughts on lasts nights show in a separate post.

Archuleta may have done better overall last night but I still want Cook to win. At least being the top 2 they both have a shot at a career depending on what they do with it. I hope that Mariah Carey will let David C record a version of Always Be My Baby for his CD. That is one of the best! Cook has also done better throughout the whole season. It shouldn’t be based on one night’s performance.

NEG TAKE: I have to say, I was watching with the wife and another couple last night and we all were blown away by how awesome Cook sounded. His song interpretations, vocals, and heartfelt performances were professional calliber and ready for recording today. He even was able to make the putrid coronation song into an awesome rocking jam, which to me said everything about how he has truly outgrown the rigid, cookie-cutter Idol show.
Arch put us all to sleep, though we did give him credit for a strong performance on “Sun Goes Down”. However, 3 slow, whiny ballads?~~ Look, American Idol is not a ballad comptetiton, it’s a singing/entertainment contest. Cook showed more vocal range, versatility, originality, grit, and overall musical talent than Arch will ever have.
We also all agreed that it would be much better for Cook if he loses, which appears highly unlikely thanks to the voting fury of those over the age of 15. Thing is, he has simply grown beyond Idol’s limitations and is ready for superstardom on his own.
If he were to put out that sappy, G-rated, pop-studio crap that Idol likes to push out on the first album it could really set his career back. He’s too good for that, and needs to go his own way now.
Simon must really like DC, because his bashing was obviously an effort to give Arch the title and set DC’s career free to soar.

It’s interesting the way MM and done with AI said the exact same thing…repeatedly.
Don’t worry MM…this antiquated blog takes FOREVER to post your comment. Just hit ‘post’ once then wait and wait and wait and eventually your post will appear…usually about noon the next day(exaggerating a little but not a lot)

LOL, Dawn. Jeff DOES seem to have more at stake in this than Archie. He’s liable to blow a fuse if Archie doesn’t win.
BTW, did anyone else notice that Ryan referred to David A as ‘Archie’ last night? Just once but I think that was the first time.

David Cook – I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For Man, I thought he really brought the vocals on this one. The sound was great, the performance was spot on. Clive picked a good stand out song for Daivd. David Archelletta – Don’t Let the Sun go Down on me I think he did a decent vocal on this song, it was pretty. But I have heard better. Come on, Elton John would not be shakin in his boots after hearing this. George Michael even did a better job. David Cook – songwriters song Why do they still do this? Each year the songs are complete torture. At least the contestants can pick the one they think would best suit them. I think Cook did just that, picked the best of the worst – for him. The song was terrible, but he did an ok job. Didn’t blow me away, but did he really try to? David Archelletta – songwriter’s song He picked the best one for him, and I do think he put his best into it. Man, such a sappy song. UGH! David Cook – The World I know Man, that was a moving performance. The vocals and the mix was right on. I just wish he had chosen to blow us all away with a rocked out version….I think it would have made him stand out a bit more. David A – Imagine Ok, now, I know the kid has talent, but I completely HATED this!! HATED!!!! I am all for doing your own version of some songs, but like Simon told Jason Castro earlier this season, there are some songs you just don’t mess with. I believe I said this same thing when he first performed this song. Why are you completely changing the tune!?!?!?
Archie is a one trick pony, and that trick is to put insomniacs to sleep!!! While I don’t think that Cook came into last night intending to win – he most certainly deserves it more than Archie. Either way, he has a career out of this – and good for him, and good for us. I look forward to his first cd and hope that TPTB don’t totally do to it what they did to Bo Bice’s first album!!
I don’t understand why they were all pumping for a David A win last night after both Paula and Simon were quoted as saying Cook should win? Does Randy know what year it is?
I dialed and dialed on all 3 numbers all night long. I was not able to get through until after 11:45, and by that time I was practically sleep dialing. Got through 7-10 times.

Good morning, all! I’m noticing new bloggers today, and that’s all cool. For the record, I’m not a David A basher nor do I believe he’ll completely stumble with a recording career. It’ll be his to succeed or fail, though. If he keeps his dad in the mix, then he could end up failing miserably.
All that said, David A won the night last night, but I felt that David Cook won the SEASON! That will not end up being the true measurement of who wins the prize tonight, as we all know, because it all comes down to who gets the most votes.
I believe DC did not want to win last night, which I mentioned in the blog. I felt like if he wanted to win, he would have performed “Billie Jean” and blown DA out of the water with it. He would have won the night easily IF he wanted to. He may still win it all, depending on the text votes.
I voted for DC so much last night that I lost count and started falling asleep on myself while voting. I finally had to cash it in at 12:15…..yawn.

I’ll concede that Archichi won, hands down, last night, on VOCALIZATION. Performance? Nope. I just have a few comments here. (sorry willie, in advance)
1 - it’s amusing that someone would come in our blog and lambast us for being “prejudiced” against Archichi and supportive of Cookie. I mean—D’oh!
2 - Archichi probably has the best pure vocals of anyone ever on the show. Problem is that despite comments that this is a “SINGING COMPETITION” … it is NOT just a singing competition. It never HAS been just a “SINGING” competition. An “Idol” is much more than a voice. It’s a person who captures the hearts and imaginations of the public, who is head and shoulders placed ABOVE the crowds, who pleases the crowds. That takes personality, poise, charm, character, imagination, an interesting persona, stage presence, performance, versatility and a host of other characteristics which, unfortunately, I am not sure Archichi will EVER have, but certainly does NOT have NOW.
3 - David Cook is not “sexy” like Michael Johns is “sexy”. I’ll agree with that. And at the beginning of the season, Cookie was frankly almost frightening… the hair was all wrong, the grungy, haphazard look was just… well, in a word, sloppy. His head seemed too big for his body. He SOUNDED good, especially with the guitar. But reservations were had by many of us about this young man… HowEVAH ..as the weeks went by, he got some hair styling advice, some clothing advice, loosened up, started enjoying the experience (except when he seemed slightly distracted — and one wonders if that was because of Aaron, tho’ he tried NOT to bring any of his family situation up).
4 - It seems that BOTH Davids are spiritually, soulfully, mentally, and personally pretty darned righteous young men. While Cookie’s inner being is formed by an extra 10 years of life experience, Archichi’s seems to be a youthful fitting into a mold made by others, to-be-unnamed-here. However, Archichi seems genuinely concerned about his fellow man in a youthful, esoteric way. That glowing “i want the world to be as one” kind of attitude MOST of us had when we were 17-18-19-20. Cookie’s is more… i’ve seen some pretty rough stuff, and i want to give good on a personal level. His refusal to bump the kids doing the Nat.Anth. at KC is a perfect example of his heart, IMHO.
5 - I want Cookie to win, because overall i think he deserves it. I would not be TOO upset if Archichi wins, because the one comment i’ve seen a couple of times today is right on the money — being under E19’s thumbs for a year MIGHT help divest him of his naive dependence on family … MIGHT help him grow up a bit, give him some experience.
In that light, i wanted to comment that while Jordin was about the same age as Archie, she NEVER seemed so immature — so … so … thirteen years old in her behavior and demeanor. Archichi does seem that young a lot of the time.
Finally, i say, may the best MAN win, and the BOY be given time to grow up, LOL.
ok, i’m done. sorry it was so rambly, i got interrupted about a gadzillion times since i started this!!
peace!

Good morning from SC! I have really missed all of the blogs the past few days and have been so out of touch. Had to be at a conference through yesterday, so I was delighted to be able to read all your comments from last night and this morning, too.
Menana, so sorry about your dad and then your getting food poisoning. Sometimes you can’t catch a break for anything, huh? Glad all is well.
And, Dierdre, I just knew what you were thinking last night when Archie sang so well. I did, too. I loved it when you said you’d have to duck. I, too, voted like mad for DC, but if Archie wins, he certainly deserved it, if only based upon the finale.

hmmm maybe that’s true maybe simon did do some reverse psych on everyone last night. who knows….and that could be true that Cook has offers and maybe doesn’t want to win…ya never know for sure. I would sorta doubt that but we don’t know if that true or not. They are both so good in their own way. I just know if David A wins I won’t be rushing out to purchase his CD. a few years from now when he steps up the beat and is a little seasoned in entertaining I would. At best I’d buy or download his single IMAGINE. All the ballots make me sleeeeepy. Cook I’d buy his CD immediately!

Oh. Let me make this observation, if you will..
IF this were a pure singing competition, the contestants could stand behind a screen and sing their hearts out. We would not need to SEE them, to have back stories, to watch them interact, to see (and this year HEAR) their reactions to the judges’ comments. We would have no need to call Melinda “shrek” because she was born with a shorter neck than someone else, or LaKisha “heavy” because she didn’t wear a size 2, or even a 12. We wouldn’t have KNOWN about Jason’s dredlocks. Michael Johns would not have been deemed Sexy; nor would the guys have been drooling over the various combinations of legs and pups over the years.
THAT’s why I say this has NEVER been a “singing competition” — The very term “American Idol” connotes a POPULAR SINGER (since the ‘talent’ portion of the ‘idol’ was chosen to be singing). What if “American Idol” related to the performance arts of ACTING? Try to make the transition … not a singer but an actor, to be the idol of the american public (think back a few years when this was actually true, some of us who are older) My point is, to those who try consistently to make this about singing ability alone… where in the definition of the word “IDOL” does it say “best singer”???
just a thought!

So,
I know I am not the only one thinking this. Knowing the restrictive contract the winner has to sign, it appears David Cook did not give his all on purpose tonight. Could that be due to the fact that he would fair better as a second place finisher so he held back and did not give his all?
I’m just saying…

The highlight of the show for me was seeing and hearing Rueben sing. He sang the hell out of that song. It gave me goosebumps. I want Cook to win but Arculetta sang his boring little behind off. Is it me or did he not perform Imagine as well the second time around.

Archuletta: That voice, people. That voice.
Cook sings the same to me, as many of you claim Archuletta does. But the best voice of ALL the contestants seem obvious to me. Archuletta.
I’d buy his cd, even if most of the songs are ballads….as long as the songs are meaningful and heartfelt.

Don’t want to put a downer on the day but there’s some bad news about one of our top 24:
Carpet layer-turned-one-time “American Idol” hopeful Luke Menard has been diagnosed with cancer.
The handsome Season 7 contender, who was kicked off as “Idol” whittled their top 24 to a top 10, has Hodgkin lymphoma, a rep for his a capella ensemble Chapter 6, confirmed to CBS news.
“Luke had a lingering cough and was having trouble breathing deeply, so he went to the doctor to have it checked out,” Jane Victor told CBS News. “The suspicion was walking pneumonia. But after a chest x-ray doctors saw a mass and did more testing, which is what led to the stage II Hodgkin diagnosis.”
Though he was booted out of “Idol” earlier in the season, Menard made several appearances in the audience of the show, as recently as last week.
Menard, 29, and his wife remain hopeful. The disease has one of the highest success rates of treatment for any type of cancer.

Deirdre: Thank you. Yes, life is better now. Hubby and I are taking Dad to Charleston May 24 - 31st. Hopefully will get some much needed R & R. You would think being on Med Leave for 2 1/2 months I would have gotten it. Start back to work on June 6, just in time to go start negotiations on new benefit packets for the employees.
Do you know which former Idols will be on tonight? Hope they will be some of the more popular ones.
Ms. Simon: How can you say that DC is a phony? He doesn’t appear to be that way. There are alot of men who are sentimental and are not scare to show their emotions. He is one of them. You sure are quick to criticize him on his looks and all. Not everyone was blessed with looks, hair and white teeth. God made each and everyone of us in his own specifications.

This is a BLOG. Everyone is entitled to their opinion Dear.
I don’t like David C’s style of singing. His style sucks. He looks like a big head creature. Sorry I think he’s a great “ACTOR”.
David A. is young, talented, quite shy it seems. When he wins tonight, his journey will help him. He is a humble kid.
My only gripe about him is the constant licking of the lips. Come on now. My prediction is that he will win. The kid deserves it. He killed the competition this year, not that there was much.

Could someone please help me understand something? Why is it that when a person makes a comment and someone else disagrees with it the original person responds with a comment along the lines of “Everyone is entitled to their opinion”? Isn’t it hypocritical to claim that you’re entitled to an opinion, implying that the person who responded is not entitled to theirs? Stop the cry baby mentality, people will disagree with you, if you’re not smart enough to defend your position maybe you shouldn’t be blogging.

I’m sorry if I ruffled some feathers about my post regarding Ms. Simon’s comments. But it’s a shame that you can’t comment to a post without getting some repercussions. All I meant is that each and everyone of us are exactly the way God intended us to be and NO ONE has the right to criticize another person’s looks. If this statement is to strong and you feel the need to blast me, then excerise your right to your opinion and have a go at me. I will always stand by what I feel is correct and will let no one persuade my opinions. I realize that this is BLOG and we all are entitled to post our opinions but not at the expense of critizing others. IMO, to criticize others is more that giving your opinion. It is making fun and laughing at them. Looks are only skin deep. It is what’s inside that makes a person beautiful regardless of their outer looks. I know that this is long, but I felt the need to defend DC even if he doesn’t know I did.
Thanks making sense about Carrie and Clay. Tonights show should be very interesting.
Deirdre: Also, thanks to you for providing some more names. Hope you found a wheelchair that is easy for you to handle. Yeah, when a child becomes the parent, it is difficult, but you do it regardless. After all, that is your parent.
