6/18: Paris Bennett interview forthcoming!

paris cover.jpg

Lo and behold, season five finalist (and very briefly, a Fayetteville resident) Paris Bennett was willing to speak to me today by phone to promote her appearance this Satuday for her Philips Arena appearance at a big AARP concert with Chaka Khan, Queen Latifah, Dionne Warwick and her grandma Ann Nesby.

I wondered whether she’d even remember our little “lunch” date last year. {If you want to go back in time and read about it, it’s here.](http://www.myajc.com/post/idolblog/22lunchkindawithparis.html). Paris was supposed to eat lunch with me but had already eaten so she just sat there. She wore sunglasses indoors and acted like she didn’t want to be there, evoking an impressively blase air about her. I was not impressed with the diva act.

I mentioned to her upfront today that we met last year but she didn’t convey as if she recalled or even remembered talking to me before. I have no clue if she just acted that way or really didn’t know who I was. Seriously, the only “Idol” person who even has admitted to reading this blog is Chris Sligh. (Thank you Chris!) Who knows if she’ll even see this one?

But alas, we talked for about 15 minutes about her career and it went fine. I can’t say it was one for the ages but here are the highlights:

-She has done two films, playing the younger sister to Atlanta’s Ciara in “Mama, I Want To Sing,” which is set to come out later this year. No duets but Paris gets to sing a song from her album. “It’s kind of cool to finally get to work with Ciara,” she said. Her grandmother Ann Nesby knows Ciara through a common hairstylist, Paris said. She also just finished playing a fantasy dream singer in an upcoming musical called “Baby O” in which a failing talent manager (David Proval) who falls in love with his client, a jazz singer. “I like the movie thing,” she said.

-Her take on her first album, which sold about 20,000 copies and generated no radio hits: “It was cool. It was fun. But that’s not me. I’m more of a jazz person.” She has done a holiday album with jazz flavors and is working on a record through Koch Records (Yes, the label that sold oodles of William Hung albums, which I mentioned to Paris but she didn’t exactly play off that joke). She is recording a mix of originals and jazz standards (Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan) with some neosoul. She’ll tackle “Summertime” by Billie Holiday and promises more of a “Billie” twist than Fantasia did back in 2004.

-She’s looking forward to the concert this Saturday. She has met most of the headliners before thanks to the fact many are buds with her grandmother Ann Nesby. She’ll be doing duets with Ann and will be on stage for a big finale number with the big stars. She plans to blog about her experience there for Us Weekly and take pictures backstage.

-After this, she’s off to Idol Camp in California and will be joined by Ace Young, her bud from season five. She said she, Lisa Tucker and Ace always seem to run into each other. She also talked to Taylor recently about his “Grease” appearance. And she sent her condolences to Elliott Yamin after his mom died.

I also talked to season two contestant Frenchie Davis at 3 p.m. and will post that interview closer to the July 3 appearance she’s having with Expose, Thelma Houston and CeCe Peniston at the Atlanta Civic Center for Atlanta Pride. Her publicist said not to ask her too many questions about “Idol.” I guess she either doesn’t follow it very closely or is tired of answering the same questions she has answered 1,000 times from five years ago.

In other “Idol” news:

-David Cook has raised $30,000 for the American Cancer Society. His brother Adam has brain cancer. More here.

-Quote of the day: “Oh, no, I don’t write songs about the guys I date. Every song, though, has to have a character in it. You definitely relate certain characters to certain people. Even if I write a song, I pick a song and sing a song, I have to relate them to certain people that I know. So I may relate a little bit to friends or family or guys that I have been around.” - Carrie Underwood, at CMA Festival last week, to OK magazine.

-Quote #2: “I am the queen of putt-putt,” said Kellie Pickler to People.com at Monday’s outdoor fund-raiser on behalf of United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee.

-The Miami Herald pillories “Nashville Star,” mostly deservedly so.

Jason [Castro] would outshine the 10 remaining NS contests — that’s how low the bar for this show is.

I tend to agree in terms of country talent, this crew isn’t likely to generate another Miranda Lambert.

-Anybody catch “America’s Got Talent” last night? Loved those hip-hop violinists, the male baton twirler and the adorable four year old singing the cutest version of “Somewhere Out There” ever. The sound mix on my advance CD was kind of poor and I couldn’t fully embrace the big opera singer dude.

Waiting for the interview with Paris. It is always good to hear about previous idol contestants.

I did see AGT last night and the 4 y/o was cute as a button. She is on a good start to a music career if she keeps it up. I was amazed that she didn’t forget any lyrics. The violinsts were not bad either.

Aw heck, Rodney!!! If you talk to her on the phone, you won’t know whether she took her sunglasses off or not!

Re the 4 year old singer….seriously, can a 4 year old decide for herself on this issue? No matter how good she is, displaying her in front of millions of people is a terrible thing to do. We’re all proud of our kids and think they are talented in one way or another but most of us don’t see them as a commodity. This is no better than beauty pageants for the same age group…..it pleases mom and dad more than it pleases the child.

D: You are so right about a 4 year old not being old enough to make their decisions and that it has to be made by a parent. I will say that the child seemed to very comfortable on stage and was not in the least bit shy. Like you, I would never have put my child on public display at such an early age. As we know from last season’s AI, some parents will go to the extremes to push their children.

Just took a peek over at mj’s She has the same opinion of 4 year olds on stage:

She said it better…as usual.

Not to “stir the pot”, but I don’t agree whole-heartedly with what everyone seems to be saying about the parents pushing the 4 year old. I think the parents are obviously proud of their daughter and want to show her off (just like all parents). I feel they are merely encouraging their daughter and providing her the rare opportunity (at that age), and I say if she’s got the talent, and she, MOST importantly, ENJOYS it, go for it!

By flats

If your pushing your kids to excel in sports,it’s ok.

By Deirdre

June 18, 2008 1:59 PM | Link to this

Gotta disagree with you, Making Sense. A 4 year old will enjoy ANYTHING that makes her/his parents smile. During the intro the mom was going on and on about her daughter and how proud she was and the little girl turned and started hugging and kissing her mom. This was a CLASSIC example of how a 4 year old gets a parent to shut up without displeasing the parent.

There has always been a big nationwide debate on ‘proud’ parents exploiting their way too young kids. To me it is like another manifestation of Munchausen’s by proxy syndrome where a parent makes a child sick just to get attention. Showing off your kids at such a young age to anyone other than family and friends gets attention for the parent in much the same way…just not quite so destructive(at least physically)

If the child is genuinely talent…she still will be when she’s older. Think back to when you were 4 years old. I wanted to eat chocolate all day(I still do :-) ) but just because I would have enjoyed it doesn’t mean it was good for me.

Point taken, D. She really DOES have her whole life ahead of her! Who knows what kind of effect/damage this type of thing can do to a little girl (or boy, for that matter)? Later in life, she could learn to resent her parents for it. How sad would THAT be?

By Deirdre

June 18, 2008 2:45 PM | Link to this

That’s my feeling MS. A talented child may still be a talented young adult. Why risk damaging a young ego over something like a talent competition?

By PJ

I agree — and the child was had just turned 4. Although I must say, I’m sure this isn’t the first time she’s performed in front of an audience! She was very confident and not a bit scared!! But it was adorable when they told her she could go and she ran and jumped in her dad’s arms.

That tells me that (unfortunately) she is “well trained”!! Which isn’t necessarily a good thing!!

D, just peeking in, my prayers go with your mom and you all … hope it helps! i have to agree about the 4 yo…cute as a button but that just seems like an awfully early age to be putting her on stage in a competition — hey, i guess we should be glad they’re not PAGEANTING her around …. if there’s anything positive to be said overall … she’s awfully cute, awfully smart, awfully precocious … but too dang young for competitions of any kind IMHO.

Rodney, my opera-hating hubby even found our 32 y/o insurance salesman Tenor to be quite fantastic … he recognized the talent and skill despite hating the type of music, LOL. And hubby works around musicians, so…. i THINK it’s a compliment! I personally thought he was fantastic — but then I’m a huge fan of tenors!

hopefully i’ll be back at work tomorrow — take care you guys!

Was just watching Access Hollywood where they had a short interview with David Cook who has made the list for the Sexist Bachelor. David said he didn’t consider himself sexy, but that he had a fan who gave him a hug and whispered in his ear that he had no idea what he did to her when she was alone and listening to his music. Boy that was a loaded statement if ever there was one.

Good Morning!!!! Time to rise and shine and enjoy this beautiful day.

The ones to beat on SYTYCD are Katee/Joshua and Kherington/Twitch. Those two couples were awesome last night. I think Kherington/Twitch came alittle ahead of Katee/Joshua, but just by a hair. I would be happy if either one of them won. The four of are great dancers.

Hope all of you have a really great day. Will chat with you later.

By ,,,=^..^=,,, from home

June 19, 2008 8:13 AM | Link to this

i’m with you guys - “Twitchington” and Katee/Joshua are definitely the teams to beat! wow!

once again, there’s a consistency problem for me in the judges’ comments. on one hand, they tell a couple that while they danced nicely, they didn’t dance as a COUPLE — they didn’t PARTNER well. Then later they turn around and say, and i think it was to Comfort and her partner — they she didn’t do ENOUGH, while telling HIM he barely kept up with her in the first place. I thought she did admirably to tone DOWN her skill in “crumping” to keep from so totally outshining HIM that he looked like he was standing still! she PARTNERED, and he was working HARD to be good at what she does naturally!

problem with that last piece, other than it following Twitchington’s waltz, was that the so-called “music” was so NONEXISTENT that it was amazing they could (comfort and her partner) dance at ALL. they could have used a freaking drum machine and left it at that and it would have been more musical. sorry. i HATED it so much it was hard to watch objectively for the dancing! and i usually LIKE the modern dancing — breaking, hip hop, whatever style … the choreo wasn’t bad, it was the music behind it (or lack thereof) that ruined it for me!

gotta get to work!

thanks for all the shout-outs, i am SOME better!

Good morning all. Linny, I would agree with you on that music. I just wonder who picks the music they dance to - the choreographers? I also agree that Twitchington and Josh/Katee are the ones to beat! But who goes home tonight? I thought the first couple was pretty lame….and one other couple, but I can’t remember their names…what did they do? Um, the samba or some fast latin dance? Anyways - she was just BLAH!

For the Archie fans out there…he answered a couple of questions from fans…here’s the gist:

* He has a poodle named Teddy and a goldfish named Conditioner. He says that’s a long story. He loves animals. * His first language was Spanish, but he’s since forgotten most of it. * He used to run cross-country. He loves running.

So he really is just an ordinary kid who sings pretty good. I hope he gets to stay a kid for a little while longer…he needs it.

Lara you must be talking about Suzie and Marquis who danced the Salsa. If so, I am in agreement with you. Also, I think Kountni and Matt, who danced the Foxtrot did a pretty good job. The best of the dancers were just so so.

Did anyone other than myself notice Mary Murphy’s puppies? They were pushed up so far, it looked like she was either in pain or unable to take a deep breath. They looked like they were overgrown puppies, in fact matured puppies is a better description of them IMO.

LOL! Menana, hubby took one look at Mary last night and went “Well. She certainly has HER pups on display tonight!” I agree she looked like she was either in pain or so totally numb that she would suffer later! With the oversize “beads” and the puffed scrunched pushed shoved squeezed pups, and the fawncy new curls down her face…. looked like she’d just been on a makeover program. I wasn’t impressed.

i thought Mia was awfully reserved all night — but in comparison to Mary, i guess that’s normal.

I thought the Waltz for the choreographer’s daughter was incredible, and Twitchington carried it off beautifully.

yeah, Suzie the miami ‘hottie’ (which i find questionable, sorry) drew the Salsa, but was stunned when the choreographer realized she was a STREET salsa dancer, not a trained salsa dancer (big surprise - NOT) she just looks ‘hard’ to me, not hot. i wouldn’t mind her being sent home, frankly.

i agree thayne and chelsea’s opening “jazz” number was pretty boring — a lot of nothing..

chelsie and mark did the tango and yes, they were quite good too

top 3 for me 1-Twitchington. 2-Katee/Joshua. 3-Mark/Chelsie.

Bottom 3 - 9-Suzie/Marquis. 8-Thayne/Chelsea. dunno… maybe BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC 7-Comfort/Chris.

My mom did make a remark about Mary (her laughing and yelling really gets on her nerves). She said “Doesn’t she know she can’t fit into Paula’s clothes?” She says she really doesn’t look the part of a ballroom dancer. I said she looks the type of the ballroom dancer gone to retire….

Mary does need to tone it all down. Starting with the laugh and screeching! I really don’t know why she feels that she must do that. IMO, it takes away anything she has to say. She can say her remarks in a more calming manner and make a better point of it. At age 51, she may have the body of a younger female, but she needs to dress appropriately, especially when she is in front of millions of viewers. Before I get canned for my statement, I am not against cleverage showing, but use discretion.

LOL, well folks, get used to it, because i doubt Mary will be changing any time soon! Over the 4 years of the show, I’ve just sort of made a mental note that when she opens her mouth, my internal volume switch flips to very low… sort of just one of those things, like Simon’s shirts, paula’s incomprehensibabble, and Randy’s Dawgs and Dudes. Sometimes Nigel isn’t so restrained himself, so it’s fun to watch them, in my opinion. I guess i’ve just gotten used to it, don’t LIKE it but… it’s here to stay. Usually Mary doesn’t DRESS so … so … “out there” as she was last night tho, so it made EVERYTHING about her seem even pushier (coff coff) if you know what i mean. At least, Mary gives Carrie Anne Inaba an example of “What NOT to Wear” as she grows older…

The thing about Mary (I know, there is something about Mary, ha ha ha) - she knows what she is talking about. She speaks very knowleably (sp?) about the moves and stuff. But the way she acts and speaks and dresses detracts from that knowledge.

I think Nigel is also up there with what he knows, and it comes accross - he can get out there in behavious once in awhile.

Lara, that’s absolutely true about Mary. Mia’s always done that, LOL — except when SHE wants to scream and shout too. She’s been remarkably subdued this year, to date, however. One thing for sure about judges/mentors/commentators on SYTYCD. They seem to know their stuff, overall, much more than AI’s judges seem to know about singing, LOL.

Is “dance” more “defined” than “singing” ??? i dunno. But i enjoy the technical plus emotional reactions from the judges, they’re not only reacting, they are also adding constructive criticisms, both positive and negative IMHO, to the dancers and giving them something to grab onto for their future performances.

I’m already getting pretty attached to some of these couples — it will be REALLY hard about half way through the show when they suddenly say “OK, you’re NOT with that partner any more! NOW you will not only draw a dance style, you will draw for a partner…”

it sure gets crazy supporting them then, LOL!!!

The judges for the dance shows do seemed to have more knowledge than the others. You take Lyn, Bruno and Carrie Anne, they all have a heck of alot of knowledge and can really give good criticism in a constructive way without hurting feelings.

boogielyn3…I think you may have misread something. Kellie Pickler didn’t say anything about Jason…she said that she was the queen of putt-putt. The Miami Herald had the quote about Jason Castro.

I think that SYTYCD is a lot more about the art of dancing than most of the other dance shows. However, I like Dancing With the Stars better.

Just in case y’all may have missed it Jamie Lynn Spears(Britney’s little sis) gave birth to a baby girl named Maddie Briann. Mother and daughter were said to be having a slumber party together.

LOL Deirdre!!!! dang. that was quick. didn’t we just find out she was preggers a couple of months ago? nothing like trying to keep up with your oh-so-influential big sis, eh?

By Menana

June 19, 2008 7:26 PM | Link to this

I read that Jamie Lyn has promised OK?mag the first pix of baby at a large amount of cash. No surprise there. Hopefully, she has learned from big sis not to make the same mistakes with her baby as Brit did.

I see we are all pretty much in agreement on DWTS, including the annoying laugh and screaming of Mary.

Still no rain !

My husband cut the tip off his finger today at work, so he will be getting an unscheduled vacation from work. I think he is gonna miss his fingertip!

By Harmony

June 19, 2008 11:50 PM | Link to this

So, I’m a little disappointed with some of you! Why? You may ask. I have called SYTYCD … DWTS numerous times and not one of you have called me out on my boo-boo. Where are the blog police when you really need them?

By JTesla

June 20, 2008 1:35 AM | Link to this

Harmony, aren’t they the same show? Oh wait SYTYCD has the screamer doesn’t it? Aren’t they the same show with one minor, yet loud, difference?

By JTesla

June 20, 2008 1:37 AM | Link to this

You know, SYTYCD is kind of long for an acronym. Why don’t we shorten it, we can use the words “So” “Think” “Dance” and make an acronym out of them to save on typing.

Good morning everyone -

JT - wouldn’t that make the acronym “STD.” Sort of dangerous on this blog!

By Lara

June 20, 2008 8:04 AM | Link to this

Ok, who left on SYTYCD last night? I feel asleep (watching it late on TiVO) during Flo-rida…..

By Menana

Good Morning to all.

TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DawnH: You beat me to say that about SYTYCD. I read JT’s post and was going to tell him that using STD may cause some stirring up, but my phone rang and then you said it first. Just goes to prove that great minds think alike.

Was anyone surprised about who went home last night? I had almost figured that Suzie was but wasn’t sure about the guy. Do any of you ever watch Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? Not only is it a good show, it is also educational. Jeff Foxworthy is such a funny man and he makes it worth watching. Saw him a few times at the Punch Line and he is so funny.

Lara: Susie and Marquis were eliminated last night.

Flats: Post hardy today, okay? Really, hope you have a good vacation and be sure to visit CJ’s at least once to get a hotdog. You know they’re the best.

Menana - great to know I’m in such good company! Have you recovered from that terrifying incident at work?

I don’t watch SYTYCD. I don’t know anything about dancing and that woman judge in the middle gets on my last nerve - can’t even stand to see her on the commercials. She needs to be muzzled!

I didn’t catch NS this week, but I was soooooo disappointed in the first episode that I didn’t feel I missed anything. Everything about it is so second rate compared to AI -the set, the barely mediocre singers, the sound quality and, don’t even get me started on Billy Ray’s hosting. It was like watching the redneck version of AI. I was a little embarrassed for them. Maybe I can catch it next week.

STD???? I don’t think so! :-)

Harmony, my sympathies to your hubby and his missing finger tip.

I love nice cool mornings like this…kinda gets me ready for the heat of the day.

Thanks Menana!!! I thought Susie might be gone. Her solo dance was just not that good. Was Marquis the 3rd guy to dance? I just can’t remember!?

By Menana

June 20, 2008 9:06 AM | Link to this

Yes, DawnH, I am getting close to putting it out of my mind. Thanks for asking.

Lara: Marquis was the second guy that dance. He was Suzie’s partner.

Harm: Hope your hubby is doing alright. Must to have been a scary sight.

Dawn…there’s a reality show coming on soon…something like The Greatest American Dog…if you’re desperate :-)

I’m looking forward to American tv’s version of Japanese game shows called Wipe Out…I think it starts next week.

I’ll see you guys later this afternoon…have a good one!

By DawnH

June 20, 2008 9:42 AM | Link to this

Deirdre - Thanks! I am getting desperate, and I love dogs but I haven’t seen commercials for it. I actually watched HGTV all night last night. All those channels and nothing to watch! I’ve seen the commercials for Wipe Out, and it does look funny. I’m looking forward to July with there is REAL TV and less REALITY TV. I hope this isn’t another 6-show season, including season finales.

By mvt

June 20, 2008 9:58 AM | Link to this

Last Comic Standing isn’t bad. Better than HGTV which has a commerial every other minute….!

By DawnH

June 20, 2008 10:36 AM | Link to this

You are right about the commercials mvt, but that seems to be the case on all programming any more. I believe 1 hour of TV produces 35 minutes of commercials.

I hadn’t been to a movie in a while and my sister and I went to see Sex in the City a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t believe it - in addition to the previews which were approved for all audiences, they ran actual TV commercials. That’s just craziness. I decided if your commercial runs prior to the movie I paid to see, I will NEVER buy your product!

DawnH, I saw Sex in the City with my daughter…we both liked the serial so we liked the movie..but you are right…ads and movie previews galore!

If you like dogs and reality shows - have you been watching Groomer Has It?! A competition to find America’s best dog groomer. I only was interested because it had Jai from Queer Eye.

I don’t think Marquis should have been gone, just because his partner was…hmmm, hope this isn’t a trend.

Have a great weekend!!!

By Menana

June 20, 2008 11:09 AM | Link to this

Chris, the last solo guy dancer, should gave done home instead. Marquis was a much better dancer. Nigel said that Marquis was to much flips and jumps instead of actual dancing. Totally disagree with what he said. I know what you mean about couples being eliminated. If one person goes, it doesn’t mean the other has to.

Dawn: Another show you may take a peek at is Celebrity Circus. I have watched it the last two weeks, and its pretty entertaining if you like circus acts.

America’s best dog groomer? OH COME ON! The reality madness has to stop.

Flats, enjoy your vacation, I have 3 more days left on mine and it went way too quick.
