7/7: Top 40 who missed top 24 now eligible for 2009

In years past, “Idol” did something I thought was unfair and locked out some potentially great talent. They’d make it so folks who made the top 30 to top 44 were ineligible to compete again even if they missed the top 10 to top 24. In other words, some folks we barely see (and that’s fairly common) get screwed while folks who make it to Los Angeles and the top 150 or so but get cut early (see Gina Glocksen) get multiple shots.

kyle ensley hollywood.jpg

That’s completely unfair. So finally “Idol” has changed the rules to allow those 16 who missed the top 24 last year but made the top 40 a second shot, as long as they haven’t been signed like Josiah Leming or aged out. The most memorable person for me was Kyle Ensley(right), the goofy yet endearing political wannabe supported by Simon Cowell but not by the other two. We here on this blog suspected the producers didn’t want another Sanjaya or Kevin Covais and locked him out.

MJ reported this originally. Honestly, I don’t really remember anybody else, can you? But maybe we’ll see a few gems in the rough.

-I learned a bit more about the “Idols in Concert” event in San Francisco at the Hotel Nikko. It is a rotating crew of 16 different “Idols” created by show pianist and arranger Michael Orland. Here’s the list: Anwar Robinson, LaKisha Jones, Jon Peter Lewis, Gina Glocksen, Rickey Smith, Mikalah Gordon, Julia DeMato, Trenyce, RJ Helton, Constantine Maroulis, Jasmine Trias, Vonzell Solomon, Brandon Rogers, Christina Christian, Leah LaBelle, Camile Velasco and a special Idol to be announced later. Most of them are also doing the Branson show. Saddly, despite the hotel locale, no Nikko Smith!

He’s also planning a holiday show on the road (perhaps coming to Atlanta?) with folks such as Diana DeGarmo, Kimberly Caldwell, Constantine Maroulis and David Hernandez. More details here.

-And here’s Doug Elfman, an “Idol” hater forced to cover the “Idols Live” tour in Las Vegas.. And boy, did he have to grit his teeth through this ordeal!

But if you’re interested in the human race moving forward, “Idol” and this tour lets you down by breathing new life into gramophone and jukebox songs in the age of the iPod. It’s like when vampires suck blood out of children so they can live forever. It’s exactly like that.

Rodney, thanks! I’m glad to see that someone is giving the kids a venue to perform. You never know when a rough stone will turn into a true gem!

hello greg.

next installment of Nashville Star tonight, reluctantly gonna watch to seen who goes and who stays (2 to go tonight) and to see what further changes in the format they can come up with. Hoping BRC has laryngitis (sorry hon) and maybe his 5 year old daughter Noah (or however old she is) can just stand in — if they have to have a Cyrus, at least SHE has personality!

It’s not at all fun to watch, to me, as it was in the USA days, but… i still want to see if Melissa can hold on and make it to the top as she deserves! Gabe’s got a nice voice, sings well, but… he’s sort of getting a little on my nerves — not sure what it is exactly, but… i’m a total Melissa fan, and actually usually throw a few text votes her way each week…just in case!

Is anyone watching season 2 of Dance Crew (randy jackson production on mtv)? they have nothing to match last year’s Jaberwockeez, but it’s still entertaining to me, since they do NOT just pick hip-hop or breaker crews, but crews from lots of backgrounds to be in the top 12. The night they had to take a song title and “transform” it into choreography themselves was awesome. Some very VERY creative and clever choreo. and it reruns on mtv LOTs, in case anyone wants to catch some of it.

anywho…

back to work!

Cya!

Hey Flats. Welcome back.

Got over my venting on the last blog, so maybe now, I can be civilized and human again.

Linny: I have never seen Dance Crew. Is it worth tuning into? As far as NS, I am also pulling for Melissa to take all. I have a strong feeling that Gabe will be the one to win it all. We will just have to vote faster and heavier for Melissa.

Menana — Dance Crew is a LOT hip hop or modern (britney type) dancing, so it’s kinda iffy whether you would like it or not — i’m not familiar with what you like to watch. I find it interesting to watch crews dance, watching for synchronicity, choreography, etc. not particularly fond of most of the music, but…hey… i just enjoy the dancing, LOL!

LOL.. if you have a chance to, you should google Jaberwockeez and watch some of their performances on UTube or MYspace or whatever they’re on. They won last year and are QUITE entertaining.

there was another group, something like Kabo Modern i think, that were also very very good

WOW, flats! Destroyed 3 chairs at a friend’s house? Umm, what are the chances of you being invited back?! Who spun him and, let me guess, THAT guy went on to win? I think if you spin someone out at the end of a race, someone who would have probably won except that you spun him out, you forfeit YOUR win.

Justin, Josiah isn’t eligible to return to Idol because he already has a deal with somebody. I liked Kyle…thought he had a good voice..they need to drop the political persona however.

I definitely prefer “Dance Crew” over SYTYCD. I enjoy the spectacle of the teams and the R&B/dance/hip-hop music works well. (Naturally, this is MTV, we’re talking, not Fox.). Visually, I find it more satisfying than the couples dancing on SYTYCD.

Has anyone seen “Dance Machine” on ABC on Friday ngihts? Don’t bother if you haven’t already. There’s a reason why ABC stuck it on Friday. It’s solo dancing and usually, not good solo dancing—more like “drunk uncle at your wedding” solo dancing.

i accidentally saw the very end of last friday’s dance machine. what a joke, but a fun joke, imho.

but i still like SYTYCD better than crew, overall, because of how much those kids have to learn in such a short time. sorry rodney, LOL!

Nashville Star was a total joke to me.Why are Lauren and Sophie still there?

Wasn’t surprised that DeAnna picked Jesse.

QUESTION: If I go into a courtroom and kill the judge and others and there are witnesses to my crime, will I get millions of dollars of taxpayer money spent on my behalf for my legal defense? Just asking.

Harmony — in reverse order — only if you are a minority and certain high profile people speak out in your behalf.

Me either. and i didn’t watch any of the regular part of the series, just the final rose

same feeling about Laura and Sophie…did you catch the total teenage glare when Jewell said honestly she thought L&S should have been in the bottom two, NOT Pearl Heart (and i totally agree, between the two PH was MUCH superior) but i felt coffey should have gone with tommy. oh well.

i have NO desire to buy a skateboard, cheap or otherwise, LOL!!!

see ya!!!

By ,,,=^..^=,,, from home

July 8, 2008 12:29 AM | Link to this

so next week 2 more go… should be L&S no doubt, but who else? coffey? that would leave Gabe and 3 solo femmes. Interesting. The women could defeat each other leaving gabe to win. IMHO he’s second best. my order of preference on NS: Melissa, Gabe, Ashlee, Shawn, L&S and Coffey … but i’d substitute Pearl Heart for L&S and put them in 3rd position, lol, if i could!

I was REALLY glad that Jeff told PH to come see him that he’d take them on any time. It would be nice to see them record, and soon. they were HOT tonight! too bad they don’t do it the way SYTYCD does it, and let the judges judge the bottom two one more time and vote WHICH of the bottom two goes home (or bottom 3, and the judges say which of the bottom 3 DOESN’T go home) or something…

Good morning everyone! Well, I managed to sit through yet another so-so Nashville Star last night. Why are those two terrible spoiled girls still there? Frankly the only “acts” I can tolerate are Melissa and Gabe. Interesting that the judges refer to them as “acts” not singers or performers. Not sure what to make of that. Did anyone notice that BRC’s hair never moves - and it always looks a little oily. Although I think he was actually better at hosting last night - they must have let him practice this week. Not quite so monotone or robotic. And did I hear that Melissa has lost 70 lbs since Nashville Star started - WOW kudos to her!

By DawnH

July 8, 2008 7:00 AM | Link to this

One more thing, there was chatting earlier about the “who’s going home pause” - well, I believe the grand prize goes to BRC for his full 2-minute delay EVERY time. I dozed off once waiting for the results and forgot what I was watching the second time.

Good morning all. I saw NS last night, too, as I usually do. Nothing has changed for me since the first night. I said Melissa and Gabe were the only true country talent there, and while some others did have talent, it was not up to the Melissa and Gabe standard. Of course, Ashlee makes things interesting. She isn’t bad, and is terrific-looking, but she can’t sing like the other two. And, yes, DawnH, it is 70 pounds. She really wants to make it. BRC is terrible-looking with the dirty hair look each week. I did notice it did not move. So, I guess they took the oily hair and sprayed it within an inch of its life!

Good Morning to one and all!!! Hope you all had a very good night.

Getting a late start this morning, although I have been at the office since 6:15 this morning.

I didn’t see NS last night, but did tape it. From reading the comments, the only thing interesting may be BRC’s hair. IMO, it ALWAYS looks oily and nasty. If he thinks it looks good, maybe we can all chip in to buy him a good pair of glasses. UGH,UGH! Still pulling for Melissa.

I did watch the whole 2 hours of the Bachelorette. I was really hoping that DeAnna would have chosen Jason, but if things aren’t in place, then she chose the right one for her. Time will tell if they stay together.

Gotta run and get ready for a meeting that I don’t want to attend but have to. Bummer.

By harrietth

Morning, flats. I hate to disagree with such an expert, but it IS only halfway through the season, and the Braves are only a few games out. I am waiting until after the all-star break to write them off. They caught fire two years ago after the break, and that happened after a losing first half. I am just a sunny optimist, flats! I love the Braves and always will.

linny, I agree about the Hackers.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

July 8, 2008 9:57 AM | Link to this

Menana — since it’s taped, you can fast forward — unfortunately one of the BEST performances was the last one — Pearl Heart’s final appearance was dynomite, so don’t miss that one. Too bad they’re gone. I would have put them in a tie for 3rd place with Ashlee if they were still around. But Melissa is No. ONE in my book, Gabe running second — i’m LESS enamoured of him each week. I am not sure why, but… there’s something about him that just doesn’t get it for me. But he’s head and shoulders above most of the other competition. I’m TIRED of Coffey. Liked him at first… now … nothing pffft nada zip zero … DIDn’t like Ashlee at first, but she’s growing on me in a quiet way. Good enough to make it, given the right producer.

WAS proud of Shawn for standing up to JR, however!!! Who wants a mentor that constantly disses you? JR is a cattle prod type mentor; Jeffrey is more the coaxer, and he also tries to impart SOME teaching when he mentors. Jewell is more like a mom or grandmom— trying to offer good advice but ALWAYS the cheerleader … IMHO.

thanks harrietth — i’ve given up trying to explain to certain people that not EVERYONE feels the same way he does and that we’re all entitled to our opinion, whether about sports or anything else — and you know i don’t mind an “expert” speaking out when he shows respect for his audience; but there is something about an arrogant know-it-all who thinks everyone else is just stupid… hard to respect that, you know?

Linny, I am right there with you on the whole NS ranking. Melissa is on top and I am so glad they let her go first last night instead of making her wait until the end again. The spoiled little teenagers need to go home! And Shawn gets on my nerves. She thinks a lot of herself - and couldn’t flirt her way out of things with her old mentor, so she changed. No respect for her. Coffey needs to go - he is just not right for this competition, IMHO. Also, his vibrato just grates my nerves!!!

I have trouble believing that Pearl Heart and Ashlee were at the bottom; i had NO trouble believing it was time for Tommy to go back to his ship; I’m proud of him, but never felt he had quite the talent that they kept SAYING he had. I feel Coffey is right there with Tommy — good, but not good enough. I liked Laura and Sophie in the beginning, but they’ve become “teenagers” with all that goes with it instead of showing backbone and determination, they are just spoiled brats who happen to sing well, LOL. Pearl Heart was so far above them that L&S would strain their necks looking up. It’s a shame. They are the Sanjaya of NS this season, apparently.

And despite my better judgment, I’m going to say one more thing. Harrietth, I’m with you … I’ve been a Braves fan and follower since the 60s… i was there during the worst, and i was there during the ‘first’ — i’m STILL there. While i can no longer afford to go to games, and wouldn’t drive in to d/t atlanta, i do follow the team, root them on, and wish them well. proud when they win, proud of their attitude even when losing. Just like with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I’m NOT a “fair weather” fan deserting the ship when a storm comes up — those are my teams to root for, and win or lose, i try to find the positive.

But … having said that, i do NOT put others down for disagreeing with MY personal choices. I may dispute a point, i may argue with a stop sign (or people who ACT like stop signs), but i try NOT to make it some sort of personal attack on the other person, and to show respect for their differences.

i mean, how freaking ZzzzzzzBORINGzzzzzZ would it be if we all rooted for the same person/team? why bother having competition?

In her little film spot, she said she was tired of being slammed every time she went to John for mentoring, and she TOLD him that. She said it didn’t do her a bit of good to be told how BAD she is every time she walked in the room; I have to agree with that. JR had the grace to tell her that she was right to speak up and she should call Jeff. He expressed doubt it would do any good. I personally felt that her low-key performance this week was much better than her hyper-over-drive-bouncy stuff, and that Jeff DID help her. Just not enough. I don’t think she’s quite good enough, personnally, but I felt the mix was wrong between them from day 1, and John Rich is NO respecter of persons, IMHO, and i don’t mean that in a GOOD way. Jeff’s approach was to try to find out what she CAN do, and help her improve. It’s a much better match; some people don’t do well with being shocked/stunned with a cattle prod — they do better with coaxing, coaching. JR is a cattle driver. Jeff is a coach. IMHO.

hope that helped!

Got a short break and thought I would see whats up. Had my meeting and no more than 10 minutes, we got a surprised visit from OSHA. Boy, I do not like that. Had to pull OSHA accident logs for 2005,06 & 07. Just got through about 20 minutes ago. When they walk in the door, you stop what you’re doing and deal with them. Was with them from 10:47 until about 1:10. Not fun.

Will make a few comments then got to do some reports.

NS: JR is s big jerk. Don’t like him and never will. He seems to think he is the MAIN know it all in CM. He sure goofed in Going Country. Still am betting on Melissa to go all the way.

Braves: I too, have always been a fan, even when they were known as the Atlanta Crackers. I will root for them winning or losing. It doesn’t matter, because they are STILL the home team. They may have hit a rough spot, but will come through as they usually do. Don’t give up on them. There is still alot of time left for the season.

Ahhh, a kinder, gentler blog this afternoon. Nice. Speaking of the Braves… I was really shocked this weekend to hear they sent Francoeur (sp?) back to the minors! I think he is in Mississippi. I know he was in a bit of a slump, but the MINORS? Seems like after he got married, his game sort of went downhill. Hmmmm….

Dawn, he’s already back in Atlanta. Said all he needed was a little reminder on his form … he hadn’t even had time to unpack, they joked… hit majorly good in a minor league game, and received a call, i think it was yesterday, to head back.

sometimes you just need a little slap in the face to make you wake up, i guess?

Hold on, flats. He only came back because of three injuries, and they had to have him. He actually would have benefitted from the ten days they originally planned, but stuff happens. And, he was hitting over 500 down there. He does not need to go, IMO. He just needs to remember who he is and how good he was. I personally think they fooled with him too much—you know, criticizing and trying to mold him. He was a natural at one time, albeit unpolished. Just my opinion, and that’s all.

OMG! He’s back already? That really WAS quick. I am not sure whether they helped with his form (why couldn’t they do that during practice here?) or just wanted to scare him to death!

You know, he didn’t just seem to be in a slump - it was like he didn’t put out any effort to catch a ball, always letting it bounce first. And when he caught it, he would just toss it rather than fire it to get the out like he used to. He would just trot to first base, not actually run.

Hopefully he will be back now that he’s back - especially since he knows he can go back to the minors at any time!

I agree harrietth, and not only with the braves, MOST of the teams will take a natural talent and start trying to “shape” him to THEIR desires instead of letting him develop his natural abilities — which is not to say that these kids don’t need COACHING — anyone can improve, but CHANGE? uh-uh. No way. Just like you should never try to make a lefty do things righty… it screws up the synapses!!!

Trying to catch y’all during the day time.

Linny, I did see the look S/L gave, they are too immature to be on the show in my opinion.

Waiting for my mother to get back from the doctor, she has to have two knee replacements.I will be the main caregiver, she is very independant and stubborn. I dread it, but you gotta do watcha gotta do.

After it rained here yesterday it felt worse than before it rained.

Has anyone heard about the man and his offensive signs he displays at his oyster bar? I live fairly close to that place, have never been there and have no desire to go. I think he is a big time instigator, trying to start trouble.there is always something offensive on the sign and he has already been on the news several times because of it. He claims to be protecting freedom of speech(i think he just wants attention) This guy tried to take my daughter there once, she refused to go.Everyone in these parts knows he is big time racist.

There is an article on MSN home page featuring Jeffery Steele in an interview about being a NS judge.

Talk to everyone tomorrow. I have errands to run before heading home. Enjoyed the debates and conversation today.
