7/17: Idol gets five Emmy nominations, Idol auditions begin today, Kimberly Caldwell’s new gig

“American Idol,” as usual, was nominated for best reality program. For the past five years, it has lost out to “The Amazing Race.” The show has one just one Emmy for a lesser category. The other three shows are the same as last year: “Dancing With the Stars,” “Top Chef” and “Project Runway.”

I am a huge fan of “The Amazing Race.” It wins because it’s an amazingly difficult show to shoot and intricately paced and choreographed. And it’s fun. It has never been a huge hit but draws a fairly steady fan base. “Idol,” seen singularly out of context, simply isn’t as impressive as “Amazing” to voters, especially those that probably don’t watch it.

ryan-seacrest.jpg

The Emmy folks created a new category for best reality show host and naturally, Ryan Seacrest is nominated. He has a solid chance of beating out Jeff Probst (“Survivor”), Tom Bergeron (“Dancing With the Stars”), Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”) and Howie Mandel (“Deal or No Deal’).

I wrangled a canned quote from Mr. Seacrest via his assistant:

“I am grateful to be nominated in this new category and am thrilled that the academy is continuing to recognize unscripted programs. I am looking forward to attending and covering the red carpet so I can ask Tom Bergeron who he is wearing.”

-And it’s hard to believe but “Idol” has already started auditions today in San Francisco. Atlanta, as noted, is not part of the itinerary this year. For folks in this town who want to audition, the closest city is Jacksonville, Fla. Get more info here.

-Here’s some interesting factoids about Jason Castro. He’s really not a dope. He got a solid 1340 on his SATs and went to Texas A&M on a petroleum engineering scholarship. More here.

-Season two’s Kimberly Caldwell, who has made a nice niche for herself as a host on two shows on TV Guide Channel, has a major hosting gig with CBS’s upcoming show “Jingles.” And yes, the show is about folks coming up with catchy jingles. (See the cross-promotional advertising possibilities!). Gene Simmons will be a judge. It’s always good to see a female host. She should do a good job. Launch date has not been set.

Idol almost always gets nominated but never wins!!!

And I can’t believe they’ve started the auditions! Where does the time go(besides frittering it away commenting on blogs)?

Also…I frankly don’t see HOW they can give the Best Reality Show host to anyone but Ryan…I mean, seriously!

With Idol having been nominated 5 times and losing same amount, that in itself should tell the producers that something isn’t working. They need to revamp and see where the problems are and make the necessary adjustments to improve where needed. If I had a vote, Howie Mandel would win for best reality show host. Given the fact that Ryan is good and will most likely win, IMO, Howie is better.

Just because they are reality shows - or even categorized as competition or games shows - they still aren’t similar….apples and pears so to speak. I LOVE the Amazing Race though…

Gotta agree with Lara….I think this is one genre that encompasses very different types of shows.

And the fact that some of these shows are presented LIVE makes a difference as well. For example, the hosting alone should be judged on a different level when the show is live. Survivor, Project Runway and, I think, Deal Or No Deal are taped shows. American Idol and Dancing With The Stars are both mostly live presentations. That leaves the host to not only manage what happens with the contestants but the time allotment, the mistakes, and the unexpected stuff.

Is a game show really a reality show? On one hand, I can see where it would be considered one, but on the other, I don’t know. Game shows have been in existence since early TV came into play. At that time, they were rightfully called game shows. IMO, reality shows aren’t game shows and are entirely different. Yes, you still are in it for the win and money and you are competing with others, but I wouldn’t put them in the same category.

On SYTYCD, here are my picks:

Male solo: 1st - Joshua, 2nd - Will, 3rd - Twitch, 4th - Gev, 5th - Mark

Female solo: 1st - Katee, 2nd - Chelsie, 3rd - Kourtny, 4th - Comfort, 5th - Kherington

Couples 1st Dance: 1st - Ketee/Will, 2nd - Chelsie/Gev, 3rd - Kourtny/Joshua, 4th - Kherington/Mark, 5th - Comfort/Twitch

Couples 2nd Dance: Same as above with the exception of dropping Kherington/Mark to 5th and moving Comfort/Twitch to 4th.

Best overall couple was Katee/Will, IMO.

When Jessica walked on stage, she didn’t walk or looked like she was injured. When she explained what her injuries were, then I understood why I didn’t detect an injury at first. Did I hear correctly, that this week no one will be eliminated? It seems to me that one would still have to cut loose. Someone help me out here. I sorta miss some of what was going by my son coming over (not complaining).

From mj’s:

Continuing its attempt to organize scribes who work in reality TV, the Writers Guild of America, West, has launched a campaign targeting the hit Fox TV show “American Idol.”

Calling it “The American Idol Truth Tour,” the guild is aiming squarely at Burbank-based Fremantle Media North America, a major producer of reality programming.

Starting today in Daly City, Calif., about 50 reality TV writers and supporters will stage a series of protests in cities where “American Idol” holds auditions to highlight what they describe as the poor treatment of writers in the reality TV industry.

Menana i think you mis-heard. The bottom gal and the bottom guy in votes will be eliminated — the JUDGES no longer will handle eliminations, however, perhaps that’s what you heard? and we have the order of the performers pretty much the same; i just didn’t keep as good records as you must have!!! but then… that’s what you DO, right??? but i’m in pretty much agreement; strange to note that while i LOVED “twitchington” i don’t really like kherington alone all that much. Maybe it’s because she’s so tall, but she always seems just a little bit awkward even on solos. Oh well, cuz i think she’s cool. but not the best gal out there, by any means.

my prediction to go this week? Either Mark or Gev and Kherington. Probably Mark, but i’m just guessing here.

later!

I’m agreeing with the dance order from Menana. Katee and Will were great in the first dance…didn’t like the second one that much. Still, they are excellent together.

I was very disappointed in Mark. I’ve always loved the characters he creates with his dance and this time…he was pretty flat. Maybe he was uncomfortable with Kherington as a partner…for good reason imo, she just isn’t that good.

By Menana

July 17, 2008 12:22 PM | Link to this

linny, thanks for the clarification. I was amost that eliminations would still be done. I just heard wrong. I do keep records very well. When AI, SYTYCD, DWTS, etc, I am sitting on the sofa with pen and paper. Believe, I do take all kinds of notes then do a comparsion to weed out the weakest to the strongest. Crazy, huh? Or maybe a addict?

Lol! Menana. I do that for Idol! I sit watching and making notes on all the singers plus whatever else gets my attention. Hubby’s desk is usually covered with Idol notes during the season…so he knows about the singers whether he wants to or not. I think we’d be called geeks in some circles.

flats - sometimes I think you have a touch of “Turrets Syndrome.” :)

And, as bad as I dislike Ryan Seacrest, of those named, I do believe he does the best job.

As for “reality” TV - anyone ever watch that show where they hook contestants up to the lie detector (forget the name). I saw one show and well, you gotta be kiddin’ me.

Finally, I never really thought JC was a dope, but often thought he was on it.

LOL Joy some nights Kat Deeley looks fantastic, then turns around and looks like something the cat might have drug in!!! THe worst EVER however was the dress that had a ruffle at the top (the ruffle, btw, looked just like the one at the BOTTOM of her dress last night)… and instead of folding over, it was stiff and standing up… so that it looked like it was going to behead her, lol. Even my kids (male) were ridiculing it.

Menana, i think we have the same results for tonight, probably Kherington and Mark (gev?), LOL

DawnH the show you are talking about is called Moment of Truth. I saw it once or twice and that was enough for me. It can really mess up people’s lives. One couple has already gotten a divorce because of it.

By Deirdre

July 17, 2008 2:14 PM | Link to this

That Moment of Truth show ought to be banned! And what kind of idiot would go on the show?

Still, it seems like a set up to me. All the questions are asked in advance so the contestant knows what could be asked. Seems to me he could confess all to his family then say ‘let’s go win $100,000.

It’s a really stupid show.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

July 17, 2008 2:20 PM | Link to this

Moment of truth is EVIL! I’m absolutely convinced it’s produced by pure evil!!! I accidentally watched a freaking COMMERCIAL for the show and was sickened! it’s not funny, nor fun, nor entertainment, it’s just MEANNESS!

whew. sorry. almost got all the way up on the good ol’ soapbox there for a moment!!!

hubby’s always said, and i’ve always agreed — honesty is generally the best policy, but EVERYONE has secrets, for whatever reason. and if they feel strongly enough about not revealing something, that should be respected. [note, i’m NOT talking about the kind of secrets like having an affair or stealing from your boss, i’m talking about things that you feel or think that are purely PRIVATE]

By DawnH

Yep - The Moment of Truth, that’s it. It WAS awful, but why would anyone want to go on that show knowing that the true purpose is to hurt the people who supposedly love you - spouses, parents, children, friends. While the show may be evil, I wonder more about the people who agree to participate!

By Menana

July 17, 2008 2:35 PM | Link to this

I totally agree that MOT should be banned. Its not fit for TV viewing imo. That has got to be the WORST program ever. We are under attach from reality TV!!! Lord save us all.

By Menana

July 17, 2008 2:45 PM | Link to this

The thought of money can make people do strange and stupid things. No amount on money in the world would get me to go on that show. My family and friends are worth much much more.

Maybe the people who go on it figures this is a way to tell their secrets and hope that by telling them in front of millions, this will soften the blow. I just don’t get it. It’s just not worth it, to me anyway.

By Lara

July 17, 2008 2:58 PM | Link to this

Oh, I agree on the Kat wardrobe issues….the up-ruffle was the WORST!! but sometimes her hair is just awful too - I like it when they just leave it down - much prettier that way. I hate the way she bounces out in between the dancers…I am so afraid she is going to fall one of these days.

Are you serious? Seacrest over Probst? Not even close. Jeff runs rings around sissy Ryan. And it rips that Surviror wasn’t even nominated for best reality. None of this other junk would even be around if it weren’t for the grandaddy (and best) of them all.

Finally I got an elimination correct. Dead nab it, I had company who came in at 8:32 and didn’t leave until 10:15 so I missed alot of what happened, but did see who was eliminated.Didn’t even get to see the whole opening number. Morning!

Enjoyed the elimination round last night. It was definitely Kherington’s time to go based on her Wed. performances. I was relieved and a little disappointed that Gev left. When we get to near the end of a show that is based on talent, it gets harder and harder to see people leave…even when you KNOW they should be next in line to go.

By Menana

July 18, 2008 8:40 AM | Link to this

Morning D: At this stage of any competition, its hard to see one go. You have attached yourself to each one in your own way and really don’t want to see one leave. Although, we all know it has to be this way, its sad to see elimination night. You can only hope that your favorite will be saved. I thought Kherington was very graceful when her name was announced. What little of the show I saw, she didn’t shed any tears. She handled it with maturity and dignity.

Good morning blogsters!! I did not see the results show last night - as I went out to see Candlebox (THEY ROCKED!!!). Seems Twitch may have been carrying that Kherington, huh? or do you think he is getting by on personality? They do say “America’s favorite dancer!” and not best dancer….

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

July 18, 2008 9:13 AM | Link to this

So far the show has been pretty lucky in that the “favorite” dancer has been pretty near the “best” dancer as well by the end of the show. I would have preferred Mark to leave before Gev, but those two ARE the least of the best guys. Joshua and Will are incredible — Will’s REEEEEALLY growing on me! But I’m with you…Joshua and Katee should end up the finale pair. Probably with Will as the 3rd, but I can’t decide if Chelsea or Courtni should be 4th. they’ve both grown a LOT in skill and performance!

ah well….

Chelsie reminds me of JulieAnne Hough of DWTS. Wednesday when she did her solo, she looked alot like JulieAnne. Even her dance style. Next week on her solo, see if you can see the same likeness between the two.

This is my choices:

Males: 1st-Joshua, 2nd-Will, 3rd-Twitch, 4th-Mark

Females: 1st- Katee, 2nd-Chelsie, 3rd-Kourtny, 4th-Comfort

If it ends like this I will be a happy camper.

Menana, I’m pretty much with you, except the two middle girls could be either 2/3 — i like them both, but i’m impressed with kourtny’s improvement and work ethic — and attitude, frankly.

i too see chelsie looking a LOT like Julianne! commented on that a couple of times this year.

what will be interesting will be when some of the choreographers from DWTS move on, will some of the SYTYCD alumni step in? i’ve seen some awesome choreography from a few of these guys!!!

I missed the opening dance last night due to company (they stayed till 10:15..ugh) so I didn’t see alot of it. Some of the choreograhpy is really good, some not so. It will be interesting to know if any will move onto DWTS. It takes a real talent to be able to choreograph the way they do.
