8/2: Jennifer Hudson refuses to talk about album cover
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Earlier this week, I heard about V-103 hosting a Jennifer Hudson “Soul Sessions,” a special concert for V-103 listeners Friday night at Sugar Hill in Underground Atlanta.
The folks at V-103 were kind enough to set aside a few minutes for me and other media tonight at 8 p.m. before her public appearance to promote her new album. A chipper, always lovely Elle Duncan escorted me into the green room. All was fine until 7:45 p.m. when Nicole Sellers, the J Records rep for Hudson, arrived. She said three of us would have her for 10 minutes. No problem, I said.
But she then said: you can’t ask Jennifer 1) about her album cover or 2) about her personal life. I hate when publicists place any restrictions on interview questions. I can grit my teeth and deal with the personal life question restriction. It’s still bull because she can always say, “I don’t talk about my personal life.” The first restriction is what really raised my hackles.
People on this blog and elsewhere have made copious comments about how blatantly photo-shopped the photo is, to make a healthy size 10 or so gal look like a size 2 or 4. I’d love to know the story behind how the photo ended up on the cover like that. Did Hudson have veto power? Did she protest it but get vetoed? Did she really like it?
Well, I’ll never know. Nicole punted and placed me on the phone with J Records’ Theola Borden, the vice president for urban publicity. In justifying the restriction, Borden said, “People have moved on with that issue.” People? What people? “Media,” she said. But wait— has Jennifer ever addressed the issue before to allow people to “move on”? No, she admitted. So if she hasn’t addressed it, how can we move on?
Then I told her that’s patently BS, that we should have the opportunity to ask her that. The album cover is an integral part of the marketing campaign for Jennifer, I told her. I said that’s fair game in context of promotion. At this point, I was really upset because I had the impression the label had muzzled Jennnifer. After I tried to reason with Borden rather aggressively and loudly, she proclaimed, “Your interview has been cancelled.” Wow! I just argued my way out of this one! She did offer an interview in the future, which didn’t make much sense to me given the circumstances.
I eventually got Borden to acknowledge that it was Jennifer herself who requested that this question not be asked. That in and of itself reflects poorly on Jennifer. Why not confront the issue head on? Not only will it generate publicity but get folks to debate weight issues among celebrities and image control and such. And why not let us reporters ask the question and give her the option to say, “I don’t want to talk about it.” I’m not the type to push it if that’s the case. No need to badger someone under those circumstances.
I’m sure someone at some point will ask Jennifer about the album cover on the talk shows or on urban radio in a situation where she’ll have to say something passably substantive. Seriously — I could have taken the less noble route, ignored Nicole’s plea and asked her anyway. But I chose to argue instead. Was that the right move or not? Probably not the shrewdest move, eh?
Anyway, I was booted from the green room just moments before Jennifer’s arrival but am still in the club right now. V-103 was not to blame for this one. I don’t even think it’s the label’s issue. This ultimately comes down to Jennifer. If anyone down the road sees or hears her comment about this issue, pass it on to me at rho@ajc.com.
Postscript I am now at home after seeing her perform for 40 minutes and honestly, she is a stunner and she sounded amazing. The crowd embraced her, knew the words to “Spotlight” and sucked in every drop of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.” She even had audience members try the “You’re going to love me” line. The best one got on stage and did it with her and believe me, there were some amazing voices in that crowd. Hudson herself says she’s online all the time and on MySpace frequently.
Here are some photos I took. It was jampacked and I couldn’t get closer than 25 feet so these aren’t the best. But you can get a feel for what she looks like in real life. You can debate that page-boy haircut Rihanna made popular but I think the dress is very flattering on her:
And for a direct comparison, I’m going to show the album cover again:

My colleague Sonia Murray was there, too. She came to the green room after I left and when she asked the label rep Nicole if she could ask a couple of quick questions, Nicole let Sonia in with no restrictions. I didn’t ask Sonia what she talked about but I’ll link to it whenever she posts something. (I think she’s going to do a Peach Buzz item for Monday.) Sonia had no clue about the online buzz around the album cover so I know she didn’t ask about that.
Kev Ross, who readily agreed to the restrictions, slagged me in his blog radiofacts.com. I’m not really sure who Kev Ross is but it’s fairly clear he’s not a real journalist. And I argued with the publicist, not the performer. Plus, I don’t think the question about her album cover is “embarrassing” at all. But here’s his take on it:
I have never been one to argue or ask embarrassing questions to a performer but apparently The Atlanta Journal and Constitution’s Radio reporter felt, I surmised, that since he worked for the AJC, he had the right to ask whatever he wanted after we were instructed on what not to ask, which I thought was more than reasonable. He lost his press credential on the spot and got kicked out (ouch).

Wow! Rodney, you were fast with this article…good for you! :-)
Someone has to eventually address this. Why? Because no one can get past the cover long enough to pay much attention to the music.
The cover was a HUGE mistake and they KNOW it! Whose idea was it? At some point the fantasy of what someone wants Jennifer to look like has deeply interfered with the reality and her album is suffering for it.
Every woman would love to have the body depicted on that cover. In reality, most women don’t and Jennifer is definitely in that category. I look at that cover and wonder why someone in charge thinks I’m THAT stupid!

Touche for the article. I personally can’t see myself supporting this album cover. I am a huge Jennifer Hudson fan but I feel betrayed by this bogus cover and lack of J-Hud’s response to all the fans inquiries. I find myself saying, ‘Who is that person?’ I have been following J-Hud’s career since American Idol, being a Chi-towner myself, but I am in total confusion as to what is going on with her genre of music and this bogus cover.

Well if you saw the pr photos she took they were much better than the cover and she should have used one of those pics for the cover. Now it is entirely possible that they will change the cover. It’s been done before. But also remember, she’s under the tutelage of J Records now….Clive and his minions are calling the shots….they have a lot of money tied up in Jennifer.

J Records gave J-Hud the authority in regards to the cover and name of the album. I recall in an interview wherein she stated so. She should have named the album “Fake your way to the top.”

The album cover is unfortunate, and most are curious. But let’s stay focussed on what’s really important - JENNIFER HUDSON WAS AMAZING!!! It was insanely hot inside the venue but none of us cared once she cam out on stage because her performance was fantastic!!! What an amazing talent - what an amazing voice! I can’t wait to buy the CD, photo-shopped cover or no - I am a fan for life!!!

Rodney, I am very proud of you for not being who you really are, as a man and a journalist! You stood up for what you believe in and what you believe is right for your readers. I do think that at some point in time, they are going to have to address this issue. We, the audience, have not moved on. Maybe they are saving that for her Baba WaWa special? Who knows!?!?!?
I think she is so talented, and to have something like this put blur on that is unfortunate.

As for Rodney, thank you so much for the journalistic integrity. It is very rare these days. I see nothing wrong with asking about the glaring discrepancy between real life and that CD cover - ARE YOU KIDDING! Like it wouldn’t be noticed! I guess she must find it embarrassing too, so let’s all pretend she’s a size 2. CAN WE ALL PRETEND I’M A SIZE 2 TOO?!!

awwww Dawn!!! Wish I’d known you were in Athens, I’d have met you for coffee!!!! It’s where i actually LIVE, not just daydream about (grin) and play. It CAN be a pretty “little” town, tho I remember when it was much “little-r” and much prettier!
Rodney, I DID go leave a post at that guy’s blog — I promise I was nice, but i did say i thought he was acting like a schmuck in judging you, LOL. Pointed out that GOOD reporters report on what the readers want to know, yada yada. and acknowledged that he probably wouldn’t post it, but i wanted HIM to know how i felt, LOL.
On a much more serious note, Skip Carey will be missed tremendously in broadcast and especially braves’ and hawks’ broadcasting. He managed, in a difficult business, to become his own famous self, and, as he worked hard to avoid, NOT just “Harry Carey’s son” … I hope that Chip and Josh carry on the family legacy, each in their own way, for many many years to come.

Thanks, Deirdre - it’s nice to be missed! And linny, coffee would have been fun. We went into several of the shops - my favorite was Helix (?) I think. Really neat, different “stuff” in there.
As for Skip Carey, I believe he will be missed, and my condolences on his passing. But I have to say, I was not a big fan. I know that he was the voice of the Braves for many, many years and was a fixture around here. But if honest, his voice drove me nuts. I just couldn’t listen to him long. Sorry - don’t yell at me!
By Deirdre
August 4, 2008 10:09 AM | Link to this
Nobody is yelling…Skip Carey would have been the first to agree with you.
I loved his ‘attitude’. He gave a failed play it’s dues when the player tried hard. And gave a successful play the praise it deserved but only if it deserved praise. He obviously loved baseball but never treated it as a thing to be worshiped. He was straightforward and honest whether it would do his career any good or not.
His partnership with Don Sutton was hilarious. His partnership with Joe Simpson was informative and always interesting. And his partnership with Pete was as relaxed and comfortable as an old shoe. Those two together were masters at describing a baseball game.

linny, as much as I loved the relaxed (although extremely hot) atmosphere of Athens, I also like the excitement of the games. Back, like 100 years ago, when I was married, my husband went to Univ of TN - Knoxville. Saturdays were simply electric from the excitement of the game. We used to go to all the home games (and a few away games).
flats - I’ve only been in Atlanta for 3-4 years, so I don’t remember Kroger ticket give-a-way. But I’m afraid if the Braves don’t improve their game, there will be plenty of ticket give-a-ways in the future! Weren’t they really bad during that time and pretty much no one went to the games?

The BEST part about that period of time when the Braves couldn’t hit, pitch or field a ball(sort like today) was being able to sit anywhere you wanted at Fulton Co. Stadium. All the tickets were cheap and, if you bought bleacher tickets, by mid-game, you could usually get yourself into a box.

LOL - yep D, in the 70s and early 80s, you could go to a braves game with your hubby and child, pay a total of $5.00 to get in and sit in the outfield seats, right behind some truly good players (unfortunately the concept of really good TEAM for the braves was a few years to come) like Gary Matthews, Otis Nixon, Claudell Washington, and of course, Dale Murphy and get a hotdog, drink, fries, or such for under $5 each person… for $20 bucks you could spend a WONDERFUL afternoon! AND you could take a jug of orange juice ahem in a cooler in with you! (no glass containers of course but anything else was cool)
ah well. such were the days, eh?
good reporting, Miss Deirdre, on the Teen Choice awards, btw.
I supposed back when i was in my 20s the excitement would have been great; now that I’m in my 60’s however, Dawn, I find myself waiting until the game STARTS to go out and do my errands on Football Saturdays, LOL. No flatty, i’m not a big fan — perhaps if the football fans and alumni would be more considerate of others, not throwing their litter in our yards, not heaving their alcohol and cookies in our driveways, not tossing bottles and cans at our pets, we might actually ENJOY their presence a little more!

One of the most endearing things about Jennifer Hudson was that she was, first and foremost, TALENTED, and not the usual cookie-cutter singer, a la Christina A., Gwen S., Beyonce and other singers who are just as well known for their bodies as they are their singing.
Jennifer is not obese by any stretch, but at the same time, she bears no resemblance to the photoshopped version of herself on her CD cover. And that’s too bad…because the statements she’s made on more than one occasion about being true to herself and not trying to compare herself to her peers, physically, ring quite hollow now. Because she has decided to propogate the notion that being thin is more important than being “real” not only does damage to her, as a woman, it also diminishes her impact as a potential role model to young girls and women who are not a size 0, 2 or 4. Once upon a time, she used to be proud of who and what she was; now, however, it seems that is not the case…otherwise, she would’ve never agreed to such a drastic computer-generated transformation. What a shame.
I don’t blame you for wanting to discuss the photo and the potential hypocrisy it exposes. I’m curious, too, as to why she would approve such a doctored photograph.

Jennifer probably doesn’t want to talk about it because they made her do it—or she just liked the way she looked. Maybe she doesn’t want to be the poster girl for “big girls.” Who knows? I don’t really care so sorry you jeopardized an interview over a picture. In the scheme of things it’s about the music anyway, not what her album cover looks like. Would you have made a big deal out of it with Mariah Carey who historically, has her album covers photoshopped to death? Or would you have just interviewed the artist/singer?

Sandy…forgive Rodney…he’s a man and has bought into that ‘size 2’ crap. Jennifer is probably a 14 or 16. 10? definitely not. Unless she buys her clothes at one of those stores where they cater to egos and change a size 8 to a size 2.

I think the main reason this IS a big deal is not because she was photoshopped so much as the attitude afterwards that she won’t talk about WHY it was done, or at whose instigation, or anything. If she’d just said “Oh, J Records wanted to do it like a dream thing” or “I always wanted to see what I’d look like as a size 2” or any BS response, we might have just sighed and rolled our eyes and moved on. But refusing to talk about it… that’s like telling a kid on the playground NOT to climb the monkey bars!!!
And Rodney’s too good a reporter to just “let it go” — I’m so proud of Rodney for standing up for his principles — and for his readers and their interests!!!

You are really being “kind” to call her a healthy size 10. She is closer to a size 16/18 than a size 10. I’m tired of the media focusing on weight issues and I’m equally tired of stars lying about their weight and their photos being photo-shopped to within an inch of complete artificiality. Jennifer Love Hewitt was no more a size 2 than I am and I feel sure Oprah has never(other than the liquid diet 20 years ago) squeezed her rear and thighs in a size 10.

Ladies..remember…the camera adds 10 pounds. I wish it was 20 but I’m gonna have to own up to that myself.
To put it all in perspective, Marilyn Monroe often wore a size 12 and even a 14 occasionally.
The next starlet who wants to prove she’s “perfect” will probably be wearing a minus 2. I have to laugh at those who say they wear a size zero….I mean, come on!!!!!

I volunteer to get Jennifer Love Hewitt’s real measurements in order to verify what size she is. Just thought I would throw that offer out there. It’s the small sacrifices that I bring to this blog.

Hey y’ll!!!! Was in LaGreange this weekend with Dad, who fell and busted his head and really bruised himself. Missed alot by not being able to post, but Dad comes first.
I would venture to say JH is more than a 16. She is definitely not a small lady. The cover makes her look about my size, which is a 6 petite, and for ME, my size is big. I have to applaud Rodney for sticking to his beliefs, even if it did cost him his interview. His integrity and principles are much more valuable than an interview.
I haven’t had a chamce to catch up on here since I last posted Thursday, but I will. After reading this blog, I need to to find out about the Archie comments.

D: I just have to make one comment about your post reagrding a size zero. When I got married in 1962, my wedding grown was a zero and it was to big and had to be altered. That may sound crazy, but I swear that’s true. I weight 90 pounds and was 5ft tall. Now since that time, I have gained and gotten rounder (6P), but still short although now I stand 5’ 1”. So it is possible to wear a size zero. Just saying…………

Nana…I’d never seen a zero back then and, believe me, i would have qualified. In 1970, my first wedding, I weighed 98 lbs and stood 5’5”. My wedding dress was a size 6. But you could have purchased from a posh-er store than I did.

Some how this reminds me of when star jones lost all the weight and refused to tell you Women(us guys could care less) how she lost it. I find the whole thing rather silly because the truth will definately show when she tours to promote the album. True it does look air brushed to the zenith power but so what folks? A co-worker informed me that she saw Jennifer on some show and she was had lost a great deal of weight to the point she didnt recognize her. So maybe she gained it back. Who is going to sit and stare at her cd photo(almost said album cover but theres no such thing as albums or LPs any more, so much for dating myself.) Its her voice and talent that counts..You people love to bytch and complain about how someone looks. Would love to see some of you hippos in person. I am not really a fan of Jennifer(never liked her attitude from AI) but she is talented I will give her that. As for her weight. When I listen to her sing..somehow fat does not come to mind. Just my opinion.

It’s always amazing to me how people who secretly think a person is FAT or have hatred of FAT people will greatly overestimate their size. As a person who has been measure by a seamstress several times for custom designed dresses, gown, etc many times I can tell you that JHud is no more than a 14 on a BAD DAY. She has large breasts which always seems to make people think she is bigger than she is (this happens to all large breasted women-know this from personal experience as well). Also CHEAPER clothes run small so depending on where you shop you may have to go up a size larger when you are not actually that size, something that fuels hatred of FAT people even more. Rodney I applaud you for standing up but really I think the main reason Jhud did not want to talk about it is because she COULD NOT talk about. Contractual Obligations are a bytch & being a musician means you say the WRONG thing they can release you from your contract & put your a$$ out on the street!! JHud is in that place where until more people accept her for her talent, (not happening even though she is a phenomenal singer) she has to try & conform to what America & their unhealthy obsession with thinness will respond to. This album cover proves my point INDEED.

EXCUSE ME!!! #1…Jennifer’s breasts aren’t the only thing that’s large about her…as a matter of fact, they seem to be in good proportion to the rest of her body. May I point out that on the album cover, they are “misrepresented”
2. Paying a lot for clothes gives gives one the impression that cheaper clothes run smaller, therefore you have to go up a size. In actuality, no matter what NUMBER is on the label, her size is her size…which down here in cheapo land is around 14/16. 3. Most of us who are objecting to the picture on her album are upset that it misrepresents a lovely woman with a lot of talent and therefore has become the focus of the album rather than the music. Ain’t got nothing to do with secretly hating fat people!!!!!!!!!By ,,,=^..^=,,, from home

You know, I wasn’t going to comment on this subject but I want to clear the air. First and foremost, as an experienced national industry vet who has published his OWN magazine…. it’s no secret that MANY celebs have doctored pictures for not only CD covers but magazine covers as well. I can tell you from my experience the star is NOT always aware of it nor do they always give the final say or approval. When I saw Rodney post on my myspace page’s link to here that I “am not a real journalist” I was miffed and got a good laugh out of it… Where in the hell did that come from? The woman I was talking about was NOT a publicist she is a rep for J Records and I have known her AND her legendary industry parents for years. I also never said Rodney argued with Jeniffer.
I don’t encourage responses on my blog and there are many comments that I don’t allow especially when they are vicious. I told Rodney I was a fan of his page and read it often and he didn’t respond. In all honesty before I came to Atlanta 5 years ago, I had never heard of him… and I’ve worked in the industry as a performer, radio announcer, programmer, magazine publisher and record rep in several major markets and got my start in Atlanta when Rodney was in the mirror emulating his favorite R&B singer or rapper before going off to grade school. I not only write about it, I’ve done it! I didn’t respond earlier because I thought the whole thing was a sympathetic ploy for Rodney to get you to to respond to his egotistical tantrum. And some of you did, most of you saw it for what it really was.. .NOTHING… the main point is, the woman is a great singer and she makes great music…. Gas prices are through the roof, many of us have kids to raise and we are just nearing the end of the worst presidency in United States history… do you really give a sh$t that Jeniffer’s pic is too thin for how she really looks?

Mr Ross…what you fail to recognize is that this is an American Idol blog…and while we joke around, get snarky and fangirly all at the same time…we take our Idols VERY seriously.
Jennifer was, in our humble opinion, mistreated by her ‘handlers’ when they allowed a photo that COMPLETELY misrepresents her and has made her somewhat of a laughing stock among Idol afficianados(ok, so I can’t spell, you know what I mean)to be displayed on her album cover. We take that seriously because we admire and respect her.
Rodney was, at the very least, trying to give her the opportunity to say something like “I know…isn’t that awful” or ” I stand by my representatives”. No reporter likes to be told what he can and can’t ask…especially when it comes to the business end of the story. Rodney made his point and we got a little annoyed by your ‘tsk tsking’ him.
One last note….I did not appreciate the condescension implied by the sentence starting “Gas prices are through the roof” All of us here are VERY aware of the problems in the country…..this blog is a refuge from that, a place of relaxation and escape from the problems of the day. Moaning and groaning over the latest Idol debacle is how we vent our frustrations and get a good laugh.
We’ll be happy to leave you alone now.

I agree with you Kevin I mean what is the big deal???? We don’t know who was behind the album cover photo. Maybe she didn’t want to talk about it at that time because some of us is complaining about a picture and if that is the case she has the right not to. The situation that happen to Rodney is not at all uncommon. Reps and publicist preinterview the reporters all the time and are given some things not to talk about. I think if Rodney was there to talk about her talent and her performance the request wouldn’t have affected him as much. From the other articles I see the other two reporters in the room got their interviews.

Kev. I’m sorry if I questioned your journalistic credentials but you sound more like a jack of all trades in the industry. You say you’ve been a performer, a publisher, a record rep, a programmer and a radio DJ. I have never worked in the music industry. I’ve been a professional journalist for 17 years, having worked at the Virginian Pilot, the Wall Street Journal and the AJC. That’s all I’ve ever done. And yes, as I have noted, I’ve accepted interview restrictions before. I’m not that pure of heart. But I felt this was a relevant issue to ask. We know everybody gets photoshopped on album covers. Hers was just such an extreme case, I felt it had to be addressed. It was something my bloggers here talked about when the album cover first came out. I felt it was my obligation to my readers to get some answers. As Nicole Sellers, the very cordial J Records rep said to me, “We can agree to disagree.”

It seems to me that interview restrictions should be more about a performer’s personal life. That’s none of our business even though we wish it was. :-). But this was her album cover. This was very public and related to her JOB. It seems to me, if you’re going to throw something out there for public consumption, then it is somewhat foolish to refuse to talk about it.
It’s not like we’re being nosy and asking questions that relate to her personal life…it’s on the frickin cover of her album!!!!!!!

What strikes me as funny is that, while J-Hud and her handlers refuses to “let” her talk about her fake album cover, she sure seems to be talking a lot about her self in a stuck up diva-ish way. I don’t see any traces of the humility that drawed me to her from the very beginning. I for one will NOT be buying her CD in protest. It is an insult to my intelligence and as a HUGE Jennifer Hudson supporter I feel it is my duty to keep it real and truthful. She appears to have to many people around her kissing her ass instead of telling her the truth!

I am a full time legal assistant. I am the mother of three (now adult) young men who. I have a husband. I have friends. I read a lot, I watch a lot of television, and I type DAYUMED fast. Almost as fast as my thoughts run through my head. Oh, and by the way, I am a graduate of high school, junior college, college, AND law school (no, I opted out of the bar in favor of having children, but it explains why and how i am able to “argue” so quickly, LOL!) I counselled youth at church for 12 years — some of them very bright, some of them not so bright, some of them well behaved, some of them downright troubled in their attitudes and behavior. I taught school. I started working in 1971 typing less than 26 wpm, now I’m at least 100 more than that on average. So—lots of words, lots of thoughts, and please do NOT look down your nose at me!!!
Oh yeah, and I volunteer my time also to such things as Cancer Research fundraising, March of Dimes, and Red Cross. And I’ve probably held doors for more “little old ladies” than you EVER will—not that you DON’T — I’m probably just a few thousand ahead of you.
Anything else?
So. A little respect for your elders might be in order, especially when we’re up to the challenge of meeting you word for word, space for space. Could I beat you in the gym — no, I’m 60 freaking years old. But I can out type and out reason you with the best of them — or do a helluva good job trying!!!
