8/13: Michael Johns interview is now up
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The fans at michaeljohnsonline.com sent me more than 20 questions for Michael Johns. Thank you! I only had 15 minutes by phone but I asked as many key ones today as I could in advance of the “Idols Live” tour at Gwinnett Arena August 18.
Johns lived in Buckhead for several years before moving to Los Angeles to try to break into the business and “Idol” identified the neighborhood as his “city” of residence.
Going indie: He noted that he’s been on two major labels and an indie. He plans to go on his own like Elliott Yamin and hopes to find distribution any way he can. “I want control back,” he said. “It’s not like I need a label to get me noticed. This is one of my last shots to be in this situation.” He also plans to do separate deals in Australia and the U.K.
So far, so good: To date, he says he’s recorded eight songs (two songs by Diane Warren), most done before the tour started. He hopes to get 25 done by Thanksgiving and pick 12 for an album set to be released in January or February. No producer named yet. “I can’t believe producers are returning my calls!” he said. “Ultimately, we’ll write as much as we can then figure out what producer to stylize it.” He admits he has fought off the INXS vibe but realizes he’s good with the bluesy-soul blend and will stick with it. He has no plans to use any songs from the past. He expects the album will include all new songs. “It’s an album hopefully you can dance to, work out to, chill out to.”
Radio, radio: J.D. asked if Michael Johns can get on the radio without major label support? (Elliott Yamin pulled it off but he’s the exception.) “I’ll get an aggressive street team and radio commercial team. There are businesses who do that.”
**The “Mavid Bromance”: The fans seem bemused by the close relationship David Cook and Michael Johns have developed. And they are wondering if the pair will work together. “I can’t see how we wouldn’t work together. We’re such great friends. Even though we’re a bit different stylistically, I used to do that kind of sound back in Atlanta. We really have a good connection. We keep each other sane. Working together - it’s something we talk about all the time.”
The “Movad” dances are back!: Ah, yes. Fans have enjoyed the silly dances the pair have done during Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop the Music” at most concert dates. I posted the video yesterday off YouTube showing a compilation of those silly dances, ranging from the Robot to the Running Man to the “Terrible Towel” to “King of the World!” But a week ago, the tour managers asked them to stop doing it. For a couple of dates, they complied, just did the song straight. M.J. and Cook fans through a hissyfit on the Web. Heck, there was even a petition!
Johns confirmed that they were told to stop doing the dances. He protested but relented. He is even familiar with the video compilation above. “It’s hilarious!” he said. He said a few concerts in, during soundcheck, he and David began coming up with a silly dance. “Every day is different,” he said. He was surprised but pleased that “everyone has been spazzing out about it. The fans love it. We were told to reel it in. But the fans wanted it back. They were up in arms!” So the concert organizers reversed the decision and let them go back to business. In Baltimore a couple days ago, Johns and Cook did the Rocky Balboa fists in the air dance in celebration.
Tattoos?: Jasela wanted to know if Johns has any tattoos. Nope. “Never will,” he said, then imitating Austin Powers, says, “It’s not my bag, baby!”
Early release: He asked to be released from the 19 Entertainment contract that is normally thrust upon all “Idol” finalists (at least the top 12 that I know of) for six months after the finale or the end of November. But Johns asked to be let go early and for the first time that I know of (though it may not have been the first), 19 agreed. “They were amazing to me,” Johns said. “They said, ‘Look- we realize you’re 29 years old. Good luck.’ I was so thankful. I’ve been able to work and get things done instead of wait around.”
Off to the races. Michael Johns will be singing the National Anthem October 26 at the Pep Boys Auto 500 and he’ll do three songs as well. You can buy tix here..
Why no instruments? Karen from Atlanta asked why he didn’t use instruments like the two Davids, Brooke and Jason, he said “the right song hadn’t come up yet for me. I was actually going to do it for Neil Diamond. But look—I’m a singer foremost, being a front man. Instruments weren’t going to define me. Not necessary.”
How about the Boston Herald critic calling you the “slightly edgier Michael Bolton:” “If I can sell 50 million albums like him, I don’t care! He was 37 when he broke it big and that’s amazing. Major labels nowadays don’t care about people over 25. ‘You’re 27? Forget about it!’ That’s over the top!”
I ran out of time. With one question left, I asked whether he plans to play golf on Monday when he’s in Atlanta. (That was one fan’s question.). His answer—no. He plans to spend the morning he’s here to visit his friends here and he has plenty here.
In the interim, here’s some “Idol” news:
-Daughtry will be performing at a private party during the GOP national convention in Minneapolis in early September along with the likes of LeAnn Rimes and Sammy Hagar.
-New papa Clay Aiken is giving “Spamalot” another stint after taking the summer off. More info here.. I’m surprised he didn’t embark on a more aggressive concert tour to promote his current album, which has not done well at all. He will be on Broadway from Sept. 19 through Jan. 4, 2009. E! has a picture of Clay holding hte baby but we can’t really see the baby here.
-After relatively low turnouts in other cities, 11,000 people are estimated to have shown up at Jacksonville for today’s auditions. More info here.

The animal stories were too sad today, so I’ll tell you one that might cheer you up. It was reported in our local paper today the story of a severely abused 14 week old kitten ( I’ll spare you the gory details)that was found in a motel trash can by one of the guests who called animal control, the animal control officer has adopted the kitten, the vet said he did not know how the kitten survived, the kitten now has disabilities, will survive, is thriving in her new home, and has been named Miracle. ( Trust me , the kitten was tortured, I don’t want to get too graphic about it)The best news is they caught the guy who did it, he is in jail right now charged with animal cruelty and they don’t want him out of jail any time soon.
GO USA !!!
Later, after I’ve seen some more Olympics!

Good Evening to all and hope ya’ll had a very good day.
D: So sorry about your Mom’s cat. I can relate to that b/c 4 years ago, I had to have my poodle that I had for 17 years put down. I still miss Misty when I come in the house.
Sorry I haven’t posted since early yesterday. My headache turned into a full blown migraine with nausea, dots in front of the eyes and unable to focus. Stayed home today and ended up going to the doctors and getting a shot of demerol. That is the reason harrieth beat me at saying goodby this afternoon. I should be back in full swing tomorrow, so watch out.

For those of us that have lost a pet, or should I say a friend………
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Good Morning Blogger Friends!!!!!
WE: That was a beautiful story. It me think of my beloved poodle, Misty. I could picture her in the meadow frolicking with all the other pets and just having fun.
A very good interview with MJ Rodney. I would like to hear more from and about him.
Since I was out of work yesterday, I need to get a headstart this morning, so I’m off to the office. Will be back later to chat. To all of you driving into work this A.M. please drive safe.

Good morning everyone. WE, thanks so much for the Rainbow Bridge story. I spent a lot of time at the vet’s office over a long period of time in New Jersey with my boy, and they had this beautifully framed and hung in each exam room. It still makes me weepy. It is so sad and comforting at the same time. I REALLY MISS MY BABY! This blog has made me very sad over the past 2 days.
Can we maybe make fun of DA and his fans for a while. Anything but sick and/or dying pets.

I enjoyed the Michael Johns interview. I hope he does well. AND I’m glad that the powers that be have relented on “Mavid”. I’m a little concerned about him going out on his own but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Dawn…we’re all good. It was sad but it was also a relief. The experience itself was fine. Vet gave him a sedative and I pet him while he relaxed on the table perfectly content(actually more relaxed than I’d ever seen him) then they gave him the IV and he was peacefully gone within 30 sec.
But we’re talking about happier things today…like the fun of watching the Olympics(speaking of which, hubby watched the men’s synchronized diving last night and expressed some pretty definite opinions about the kind of guys who would do that).
And the Idol tour will be in Atlanta soon and Rodney will be able to give us his first hand account of the performances…and “Mavid” of course!
By harrietth

D, I know you are glad that is over. Your experience mirrored mine.
Does anyone else find the beach volleyball boring? I do. It reminds me of tennis doubles, which I don’t care for. I watched the men’s sync. diving, then turned away when the volleyball came on. Actually, I watched the South Carolina girl’s softball little league world series championship’s last two innings, and I was delighted that the team from SC won it all. They were from Simpsonville, SC and beat the girl’s team from NJ. It was fun to watch. Anyway, I liked it much more than the beach volleyball. Just MO.
And, Nana, I wondered where you were yesterday. Glad you are feeling better!

Thanks for the well wishes. I am much better. Thank the person who invented demoral.
When I posted this morning around 5:00 am, I did warn ya’ll that I would be be back. Well after reading all the sad comments about our pets, I think it’s time for a chuckle or two. So here goes and I hope I put a smile on your face:
Games for when we are old
Sag, you’re it.
Hide and go pee
Kick the bucket
Red rover, red rover, the nurse says to bend over
Musical recliners
Simon says something incoherent
Pin the toupee on the bald guy
* Old is When*
2.Getting alittle action means I don’t need fiber today
Getting lucky means you find your car in the parking lot
An all nighter means not getting up to pee
I know this is long, but just maybe some of you felt better after reading it.
Cheer up things would be worse, so I cheered up and sure enough, things got worse

Rick was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry. She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from zero to 200 in less than six seconds… and if you know what’s good for you, it will be there!!”
The next morning, Rick left early for work. When the wife woke, she looked out the window and there was a box gift wrapped in the middle of the driveway. She her robe on and ran out to the driveway and took the box inside. She opened it and found a new bathroom scale.
Rick has been mising since Friday!!!

some people cannot tell the truth from fiction. some people think fiction IS truth. some people think if you don’t LIKE a particular person you’re either being hateful or bigoted. some people don’t want anyone to think about anything. some people think it’s fun to spoil others’ enjoyments, whatever they are. some people think because you like american idol you must be mindless and stupid. some people think american idol is the only thing worth watching. some people think college football is the only think worth any value. some people don’t think college football is all “that”. some people like diversity and variety and actually can enjoy very different things. some people don’t like ANYthing. some people just don’t think. period. amazing, eh?

One for the road:
A presidential candidate was touring elementary schools in Texas. He was making a speech about guns and how they kill. He stood at the podium and each time he clapped his hands he would say, “Everytime I clap my hands, a child somewhere in the world a child is shot and killed by a gun.” So he clapped again, waited a few seconds, and repeated this for about five minutes. Finally this little boy stood up and in a loud clear voice said, “Well you dumba$$ quit clapping and no more will be shot”

I had to drop in to say HELLO to everyone since I can’t tear myself away from the Olympics at night! The Olympics are setting up a whole new problem for me, what do I watch when they are over? I guess I could watch some of the movies that I have accumulated.
Where has this year gone? It’s almost September already. I am looking forward to cooler temperatures and maybe we will get enough rain this winter so we don’t have to deal with drought again next year.
Talk to you all later , I’ve gotta go water the thirsty plants. Go USA and Phelps.

Just because you like sports does NOT make anyone a bad person. Flats you are fine just the way you are. Post your sports talk anytime you feel like it. We all understand where you are coming from.
