8/25: New “Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi, Fantasia in Atlanta over the weekend (UPDATED)

I’ve decided to add this to the existing Fantasia item:

dioguardi_k_1_500.jpg

“Idol” is adding a fourth judge in Kara Dioguardi. This is the first time since season two that the show has fiddled with the judge lineup, which will otherwise remain the same with Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell.

This is the show’s first major move since executive producer Nigel Lythgoe stepped down.

I know nothing about this gal but based on a quick look on the Web, she appears to have an accomplished resume. She has produced work for the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Simpson, Kylie Minogue, Enrique Iglesias, Celine Dion, Clay Aiken, Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, Raven-Symone, Diana DeGarmo, Lindsay Lohan, Bo Bice, Pink, Jewel, Jesse McCartney, Paris Hilton, Katharine McPhee, Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, Jonas Brothers and Christina Aguilera.

Here are two quotes from the press release:

“We are turning the heat up on ‘Idol’ this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table,” said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. “She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America’s most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show.”

“We had originally intended for American Idol to have four judges,” said executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz. “We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers.”

There’s a press conference for her at 3 p.m. EST. I’ll create a fresh blog entry for that.

Back in season two, Angie Martinez started as a judge but quit during the auditions, saying at the time “it became too uncomfortable for me to tell someone else to give up on their dream, especially when I realized that many of them have supported my musical career.” Where did that career go by the way?

fantasia-with-roses.JPG

I caught a short set by Fantasia at the Atlanta Civic Center Saturday night.

She co-headlined with comic Rickey Smiley at the Atlanta Civic Center and proved what made her so appealing to a broad audience on TV. She looked and sounded much better than she did in the spring when she revisited “Idol” and was a hot mess to the point Simon Cowell looked downright dumbfounded.

While she’d revert to “screech” mode on her vocals on occasion, the inspired, energetic Fantasia turned the center into her very own church, capped by a tour de force version of “Free Yourself.”

And showing how connected she was with the audience, she spent almost as much time in the crowd as she did on the stage. She danced and laughed it up with the folks in the first few rows, who got their $94 worth. She even evoked a bit of “Idol” by doing a medley of old classics including “Tell Me Something Good” and a rousing “Purple Rain” that would have impressed the Purple One himself.

I was about 20 rows back and she was such a whirling dervish, it was tough to get good shots with my camera. Here’s the best one I got, of her in the audience:

Good rainy Monday Morning to All. Hope ya’ll had a great weekend and got lots of much needed rain. I know we did.

$94.oo a seat to see Fantaisa? Don’t think so. I didn’t care for her before and I care even less now. However, thanks Rodney for the pix and report. You do your job very well and we do appreciate all your efforts.

Hopefully, SC won’t make changes that will be harmful to AI. If he makes any at all, he may be able to improve ratings and have a better insight of what the public wants and then deliver. Only time will tell.

Gotta finish getting dressed for work as I have to leave in about 30, so I will chat with you all later.

Drive careful and be safe to those who have to drive.

Morning!

Thanks for the Fantasia pictures, Rodney. She looks a LOT better than she did on Idol this year.

We are absolutely soggy here. With luck, the rain is done for awhile.

Good morning! D, unfortunately, I saw the weather reports on early morning tv, and it looks like you—and we here in SC—are going to be in for much more rain. It is going to be a mess. But, I know Lake Lanier and others like it need the rain. Flooding is no fun, however. And, the rain certainly puts a crimp in my lunchtime walking for exercise!

harrietth..the rain is much needed, that’s for sure but it would be nice if we got a good downpour once or twice a week. At least the wind has stopped. My poor dogs keep trying to find a dry place to sit outside their kennel. I was going to clean out the dog room in my house today(used to be a sunroom but between the rain and the dogs, that name doesn’t fit anymore) However, with more rain in the forecast, I think I’ll find something else to do.

Hi y’all!

Wow, $94 for Fantasia? Um, no. Granted, I was never a huge fan, but that sounds pretty expensive. Or is that just me?

The Bunny House Review: I honestly expected the movie to be horrible, but it was actually pretty funny. Anna Faris (The ex-Bunny) did a good job of selling the movie. It was sort of in the same vein as Legally Blonde. (I belive the same producers were involved.) Katherine wasn’t in a whole lot, but she was actually pretty strong in her scenes. It’s basically a mindless movie, but I laughed quite a bit.

Good morning everyone. How much for Fantasia? Well, if I read correctly, it also included a comedy routine. Still, $98 to make my ears bleed… At least she got rid of the fuschia hair.

Love - everyone’s opinions are welcome here - even yours. But I will say that with your attitude - it is no surprise that you are a Fantasia fan.

If you all had read the article, you would know that the $94 tickets are front row or close to the stage seats. As in all concerts, the closer you sit, the more expensive the ticket.

This blog continues to crack me up..lol..folks always challenging some one’s opinion. Thats all it is, just Your opinion which everyone has. Some of you would not pay 98 bucks to see Fantastia..but would pay $200 and up to see Mily Cirus? Hananah Montana oh pleazzzzzzzzzzze! Would not waist five bucks to see either. Fantasia, I can see on Youtube. and hear all the screaming until my lil ears can bear no more. Forget all of these screamers today. Give me 60s and 70s artists..Heck I will even take Stephanie Mills from the 80s. That was the last of Real singers any way, and I would not pay 98 bucks to see her either. But then again..its YOUR money. Pay 10 grand to Hannah Montana..Mily..shes a freaking millionare and isent thinking about how much you spend. And although Fantasia isnt a millionare..she did not miss mine or your 98 bucks so save your hate-er-raid! it makes you look as if you have no life.

I was at the show, Row X (24 rows from the front), and I did not pay $94.00. She stayed in the audience, and made it to and sang near our row. Tasia was worth every penny. We were disappointed that she didn’t sing her latest hit “When I See You”, but her rendition of “Purple Rain” more than made up for it. I am 45 years old, and I would pay to see her again. She was great, and I do not know where all hating is coming from on this blog.

Some days it just doesn’t do to state your opinion. And tell me just how one determines that your name makes you old and decrepit? Everyone has the right to state their OWN opinion, whatever it is. Besides, I don’t know how to knit, but maybe Love can teach me since (s)he seems to know so much about it!! And there is nothing wrong with listening to Bing.

I’m in top form today and ready for anything that is dished out to me, so posters beware!!!!! I will try to be nice and polite today, but……..

Thanks Dawn.

D: Have you gotten your Mom moved yet? As far as the rain here in metro Atlanta, we will have it everyday this week. Today 60% - Tuesday 40% - Wed 70% - Thurs 80% - Fri 70%. That is according to WSB-TV this morning. But you know how the predictions change.

**Fantasia, Continue doing you. They just mad becasue Kelly Clarkston can not charge $98 for a ticket. Her concert was canceled becasue of poor sales. Fantasia is a very talented singer and her stage performance is on point. Look at the positives in her life and help build her. Stop trying to break her down with your negative thoughts and comments.

PS. DawnH Everyone has an opinion but why do you think “Love Fantasia” had an attitude. She just made a comment. Stop trying to read between the lines and just agree to disagree.**

Oh STOP IT!!! There’s no hating going on…we’re Idol fans! Didn’t Fantasia win Idol? Just because she isn’t our favorite Idol doesn’t mean we don’t wish her well. I’m not a fan of her voice but I certainly don’t hate her.

I love Fantasia. I was so proud of her for winning American Idol. I would have loved to see her and Ricky Smiley in concert but $94 was a lot to pay per ticket right now. I even considered the $71 seats. Hopefully she will come back for another concert.

Ladilovely…quoting Love Fantasia:

“With a name like Nana, who would expect you to like Fantasia? She appeals to the younger crowd, not grandma’s! Pull out the knitting needle and put on some Bing Crosby!”

She decided someone was old based on her name and the fact that she doesn’t like Fantasia. If someone did that to you, wouldn’t you consider it an “attitude”?

To all the Fantasia fans: We respect Fantasia and like her but she’s not on our list of favorites, therefore we get a little ‘snarky’ about her. Live with it! She’ll be just fine.

In my post of 4:34am, I don’t think I said anything about HATE in it. I merely stated that I do not and have never cared for Tasia and that I would never pay that much for a ticket to hear her. I also thanked Rodney for the pix and reports on her as I realize that are those who do like her. I did read the entire report that Rodney wrote and know that the seats up close were the most expensive ones, as they always are for any concert. If I opened a can of worms on this subject, then, so be it. I will NOT apologize for stating my opinion. You know the saying, “Dammed if you do and dammed it you don’t.”

So enough bashing anothers opinion.

Don’t spoil it for those of us who feel she is worth the money WE pay to see her. How in the HELL can you tlak about and judge something you have not seen. Give her a break. She is just trying to make her way in the world just like everyone else. Give the girl a break. My Goodness, such hatred and disdain masked as opinions. What a joke. Get a life haters. Oh, there are probably some pretty bad racists out there, and we see that every time race is brought up as an issue here, from each perspecite. Hoever, the regular bloggers are decent, music-loving, and intelligent people who love to state opinions on everything from Idol to the latest weather, etc. There are myriad opinions to be found here, and none of them should be judged for anything more than what they are—opinions! I gotta tell you I get really annoyed by the implication that, because Fantasia is not my favorite Idol, that makes me a racist. If I voted for Fantasia based on the color of her skin, THAT would make me a racist. If I didn’t vote for Fantasia based on the color of her skin, THAT would also make me a racist. Oh.

My.

Goodness!

First of all, visitors to this blog who found it JUST because the headline says “Fantasia” … you are more than welcome to post here of your appreciation for a perform you like… just as those who happen to prefer someone ELSE are welcome to post here their opinions and likes and dislikes.

However, shouting at us (i.e., in case you are not aware, typing in all caps is considered rude and to be “shouting” or “yelling” in blog terms), cursing us (“go back to hell where you live”) and making judgments about us (Nana must be “old” and should knit, we are jealous because DeGarmo didn’t win, and that we’re racists because we don’t like ‘Tasia) are unacceptable behavior in anyone’s terms. Most of us post here weekly if not daily — if you would like to join us and calmly — ok, or NOT so calmly at times — express your opinions, please — do! I personally do not like Fantasia. I personally felt her one and only great performance was Summertime — at that was incredible. However, I also felt that Ms. London was phenomenal, that Ms. Hudson has done well for herself and represented American Idol quite well. Just to name two of the MANY. Some were “white”, some where “black” and some were “yellow” (i don’t think we’ve had an AmerInd on the show yet, so i can’t say “red”—and if i’m wrong there, i know someone will tell me!) … that was, in case you missed it, a reference to that song we sang in sunday school “Red and Yellow, Black and White, we are precious in His sight” … which is exactly how i personally feel — i don’t, never have, hate anyone because of their surface features, including color. My biggest “prejudice” is against STUPIDITY — and by “stupidity” i don’t mean ignorance where you haven’t learned something (yet), or where there is any inability to learn. My other big prejudice is against DELIBERATE MEANNESS.

So. Your thoughts are welcome, but please, realize that if we all thought exactly like you about things, there would not have BEEN an “American Idol” — which would have deprived many talented young people to never have exposure leading to decent careers in performing arts! If we didn’t have different tastes, there would be no need to compete for attention —

for those who like to read, try finding the story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut … it makes an excellent point about everyone being the same.

And finally, as Deirdre has already pointed out… this is NOT a “Fantasia” … or “DeGarmo” … or “Underwood” … or “Clarkson” … blog. It’s an American Idol blog. the regular visitors to this blog discuss music, movies, American Idol, weather, other contest/reality shows, dogs, ranches, bulldawgs, sports, nascar, and many other areas of endeavor. so

no.

we aren’t going anywhere!

trev, Fantasia just happens to be the subject today. Tomorrow it may be another Idol. I am a regular on this blog every day, no matter what the subject of Rodney’s column. That was all before people got so bent out of shape.

trev…to answer your question to harrietth…this is an American Idol blog and some of us “regulars” are here all the time just chatting. Rodney writes a piece about a current or former Idol, we comment then move on to other conversations. This has been going on for years! I know..we need a life! Believe me, we’ve heard it all before.

We enjoy it when other people pop on to comment…some stay, some enjoy our company…others don’t(as you can see) Anyway…you seem pretty nice, reasonable and interesting. Feel free to pop in anytime. We LIKE discussions…we encourage people to state their opinions whether we agree with them or not…and we only get offended by name-calling…of any kind.

and trev … you sort of get the point, but just miss it … “when it comes to Fantasia” … this particular blog happens to have people who don’t particarly like Fantasia’s voice, or style, or whatever. NOT “Hate” her … just don’t prefer her SINGING. But I know there are lots of folks, obviously, who like her a lot … so the answer to me is … when you see Fantasia is the topic, feel perfectly free to post WHY you like her, what it is that you like about her, why you feel she’s so talented, etc etc — without dissing or slamming others for NOT agreeing with you!

frequently someone will be discussed that someone doesn’t particularly care for — while others DO like him or her, and it’s just a discussion of the merits of both sides of the argument, without being a personal grudge match, mudslinging competition between some sort of mortal enemies.

we’re just folk, for heaven’s sake, just like the rest of you, and we have opinions, and we like to express them. we welcome others who want to do the same, but WHY can’t it be with respect for the differences of others, instead of jumping with both feet onto the “racist” wagon, or the “hater” wagon, or the like?

I don’t like Amy Winehouse (is that her name) for heaven’s sake. Does that make me some sort of racist? Heck, I may be one of the few women who think Brad Pitt is NOT NOT NOT the sexy thing that he’s so often touted as being — because I am a woman, does that mean i am calling him “gay” (which I am obviously NOT doing, btw) just because i don’t think he’s sexy? the logic of saying i’m racist for not liking fantasia’s sound is equal to that, imho.

what about all the “black” performers i DO like — from Samuel L. Jackson to Miles Davis to Morgan Freeman to Halle Berry to…

oh crap, boss needs me, lol, i can’t continue the list, but suffice it to say there are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of performers whose skin tone is darker than mine that i absolutely ADORE, respect, etc etc…

Ok, trev. You can see where there are some very, very nasty people out there on both sides, making outrageously mean remarks. Example: Ms. Simon above. This is non-productive and certainly not conducive to good conversation and opinion, which is that which this blog is really about. I echo Dierdre’s invitation to stay around and talk to us.

Define “ugly” Ms. Simon? If you are referring to outward apperance, as most of society does, that’s sad. You may be “beautiful/pretty” on the outside, but you are definately an “ugly” person on the inside. Celie was called “ugly” in the movie and play, but was the most beautiful person of all.

At one point I had decided to not post anymore today, but after all the remarks that have been directed at me for my non-hatred remarks, I have decided that I will not let ANYONE run me off. If anyone has such a low image of themself that they have to resort to cussing and name calling, I guess they are to be pitied. Had I used the hate word and been negative in my remarks, I might be able to see where the remarks directed at me would be made. However, since I didn’t, I don’t understand the concept of all of this. Being rude is so immature and there is no excuse for anyone being that way expecially to someone they have never met and never will meet. Of course, I wouldn’t want to meet someone who hates life and is not a happy person. Before anyone can be happy with their life, they have to be happy within their self.

So, I will continue to post today, and hope that some of you will come to your senses and be mature enough to post your comments rationally.

I don’t like the idea of 4 judges however. Too much judge talking, not enough singers. If one of the judges were to leave, I would hope it would be Randy(OMG…does that make me a racist) and here’s why. He doesn’t have anything to say. He makes very little constructive criticism. Even Paula will tell them what she thinks they can do to improve…Randy is just an “I liked it” or “I didn’t like it” kind of a guy.

Whoa? What the heck happened here in a couple of hours?! DAAAAANG! Ok, so, anyway! :)

4th judge? Not sure that’s gonna work. The reason last season wasn’t as good was the themes. Honestly, they could have better selections and it would be fine. I also think the “controversy” about a few of them having prior deals played a role. It didn’t feel like that crop was as “undiscovered” as we’d like to see on Idol. IMO.

Judging by the posts in favor of Fantasia and the ridiculously high ticket prices, I would say that her fanbase seems to be very uneducated. Almost every pro-Fantasia posts brutalizes the english language and/or makes no sense. I cringe everytime I see the term “haters” - it just means that person who typed is bringing nothing to the table except an annoying slang term.

And gg…..the price of concert tickets today is ridiculous. But, just like people who would fork over their hard earned money to see Fantasia…the same can be said about fans of other performers. It’s THEIR money to do with as they please.

Frankly, I’m not a concert goer….I’m not into crowds, loud noise and the occasional whiff of a controlled substance(ok..so that doesn’t really bother me that much). I also enjoy HEARING the person I paid to see rather than the person standing behind me jumping up and down, banging their elbow into my shoulder and singing off-key. But that’s just me.

I continued to read the blog, and will continue to watch AI, and read the blog, and will comment when I feel it necessary to do so. Also, I think a guest star (musician/singer) should be the 4th judge, like they used to have the first few seasons.

i sometimes get into the grammar/spelling/punctuation thing, because i have a degree to teach english, LOL, but i rarely capitalize my words (lazy?) and often mistype or misspell words…eh… as do most people.

and in keeping with our banter here… counterfeit is the correct spelling (ok ok, i’m just teasin’ … and i just couldn’t resist!!!)

CNN News/World:

Dog Protected Abandoned Newborn

A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14 year old mother in a field in rural Atgentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house. The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and her six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Providence of Buenos Airies. The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees he said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said. “She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” Salcedo said. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this the baby would have died.” “The dog is a hero to us.”.

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, said police showed up at the hospital at 11:30pm with the baby, who doctors say was only a few hours old. Though the infant had superficial scratches and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said. The infant has been transferred to a children’s hospital in La Plata.

If I may interrupt the circle jerk for a sec…

What class would the parents of a “tween” fall under, who pay a few thousand dollars for a “counterfiet ticket” to see Miley (Hannah Montanta) at the Gwinnett Civic Center???

The difference is, Miley is a huge commercial success in the realm of pop music, and the unfortunate ticket prices on the secondary market reflect the demand.

Fantasia, by comparison, has been a massive flop in that arena, her Broadway successes notwithstanding. There’s a reason she’s splitting time at the Civic Center, and not headlining at Philips Arena. I can’t imagine there aren’t much more economical ways to watch her perform, if that’s your thing.

gg, i couldn’t resist … i’ve ‘corrected’ someone before and had them come right back with “well you did ‘so-and-so’ wrong too” … just passing it along (all in good fun, not meant as a slam in any way, please understand!)

i do sometimes have a rather wry sense of humor and sometimes it’s not what people are used to…it can come across perhaps a bit acerbic or tart… but i promise, unless i’m lambasting someone (and you usually know when THAT’s happening!), i’m all for fun and ribaldry and banter!

on the other hand, i can get up on that ol’ soapbox and be pretty serious, if the right buttons are pushed! at least i’ll usually acknowledge that i’ve gone off that way by “pushing the soapbox back under the desk” or something…

D, i’m excited for you and your mom…and hubby too, LOL! good luck with the move!

Getting back to the original topic, Hubby and I saw Fantasia (free tickets from friends; you can’t pass up free tickets) on Saturday (not great seats) and were VERY pleasantly surprised! She was not my girl during her Idol season as my fav was Jennifer H., but Fantasia grew on me after Jen was booted, and by the end of the season, I thought without a doubt that she was the clear winner.

However, I liked Tasia better when she sang ballads as no one could top her and she was definitely the natural talent on stage. Diana D. was so not natural, was over “rehearsed”, whether she actually was or not, so I voted for Tasia.

On Saturday, she grown a great deal and proved to be the consumate professional I always knew she’d become - polished, fantastic with the audience and her voice is better than ever. She’s gained some weight but she looked the best I’ve seen her look in ages. We were thoroughly pleased and if she comes through your town in the future, you might also be pleasantly surprised if you go see her.

I actually went to the show and it was an excellent and well worth the ticket price. People here complaining didn’t even go to the show so they don’t really count.

I was there mainly for Rickey Smiley but Fantasia did not disappoint. She surprised me! She was awesome. Her testimony about her surgery was a tear jerker. I for one put her down when I heard she was missing shows in The Color Purple without knowing the facts.

Fantasia is one of the few real singers out I wish her the best and look forward to buying her next album.

Bring it on!
