9/1: Bo Bice, Ace Young on Jerry Lewis telethon

Rickey.org has video of Ace Young performing his ballad “You Redeem Me” at the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy telethon over the weekend. It’s a pretty good tune:

And here’s Bo Bice doing “See the Light”:

-In a gimmick first, Rachael Ray tried out for “American Idol” in New York a few days back. I know, I know. I’m sure nausea is setting in.

“We brought food and Ed McMahon and found our way in,” Ray told Hal Boedeker of the Orlando Sentinel. “We got criticized by Simon. We had a great chat with Paula [Abdul].”

-MTV spoke with Kevin Covais about his film “College.” This upcoming graf might also cause nausea of a different kind:

“I strip down to my underwear in the movie,” he said, tongue planted firmly in check. “Seriously, they should put that on the poster. See me stripped down to my tightie whities - how can people not go?”

Sadly, Covais’ R-rated college flick failed miserably in its opening weekend, with just $2.6 million in 2,123 locations for a modest $1,241 four-day average. With an average of four shows a day and, say, $8 per ticket, that means about 40 people per screening.

-I’m getting a sense David Archuleta’s “Crush” could become at top 10 hit on top 40. Locally, it’s now getting medium airplay on Star 94 (no. 14, according to Yes.com), though I haven’t heard it yet on Q100, which has become much more conservative about airplay the past year.

Thanks for all the info. Rachael Ray… give me a break, there is too much cross promotion as it is on Idol. Kevin Covais about 40 people per screening? Put the clothes back on.

Rachel Ray????????????? Need I say more?

Only 40 per showing. What does that tell you? Not much, I assure you. There are some that I would pay to see in their whitie tighties, but not him.

But thanks Rodney for the report. As usual, you are in great form on reporting.

Ace also performed Baker Street with saxophone player, Michael Lington. This is featured on Lington’s new CD - “Heat” which was released today. Here is a low quality youtube recording of this performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm1J2QQ_tIc

thanks for the news Rodney, thanks, too, to Toast for the link to Ace’s performance. You’re right, LOL, that’s a “low quality…” but at least you get the idea of the performance by Ace. He was never a favorite performer but i did like him better than a lot of the others!

For those who don’t know, but Jerry Reid passed away yesterday from compilcations with emphysema. He was 71. Jerry was best known in his roles in the Smokey and the Bandit movies with Burt Reynolds. I was fortunate to see him in concert and what a very funny and entertaining performer he was. He will surely be missed.

Now on to a lighter subject, AGT. Did any of you see it? IMO, the best performance was Jonathan, the baton twirler. He was phenomenal and very entertaining to watch. Joseph Hall, the Elvis impersonator, had his moves perfected as Elvis did in the movie Jailhouse Rock. However, I thought he lacked the vocals. The best vocal was probably Sarah Lenore, the blonde country singer, with a close second of Michael Strelo-Smith. He didn’t have any problems speaking his mind to the judges. In judging these shows, the British judges must love the word karoke as they use it quite frequently. How many times on AI, do we hear Simon say a performance sounded very karoke?

Just my thoughts this morning.

Good morning everyone. Nana, I watched AGT. I didn’t think anyone was particularly good last night, although I enjoyed the country girl the most. The baton twirler was good, but I was thinking about it like the judges - could I watch that for 90 minutes, and would I pay to see it? Uh, NO. I also liked the “Broadway” singer until he started bantering with the judges. Now I just hope he is gone!

My favorite moment - I can’t remember the exact words, but when Pearse (sp) said this was not a “tea party” and Jerry said it was a good thing since the last tea party didn’t go well for them (the English obviously). LOL and cracked me up! GO JERRY!

Morning!

I gave up on AGT after the Olympics.

We watched the RNC last night and we’re looking forward to Sarah Palin’s speech tonight. The thing I like best about Gov Palin is that she seems to live in the same world all us regular people live in rather than way up there in DC where they don’t seem to have a clue how the rest of us think.

And in a non-partisan observation…I think her nomination has brought out the hypocrites on both sides of the aisle. Suddenly, Republicans think having a baby out of wedlock is ok and Democrats think a woman needs to stay at home and raise her kids. It’s laughable!

I’m also looking forward to the new TV season. I’m done with the summer shows and ready to move on. I’m curious about Fringe. Can’t wait for Pushing Daisies to start(so clever) and, of course, am a little annoyed that Lost won’t be on until it’s Idol season again.

Nana, Jerry Reed was a cotton mill boy who lived in orphanages after his parents divorced. In the sixties Atlanta music scene, he was a member of Bill Lowery’s stable of young up-and-coming artists, such as Joe South, Billy Joe Royal, and my friend, Paul Peek. They all started recording for Lowery’s NRC label. Also, songwriter Ray Whitley, who wrote many of The Tams’ greatest hits, was a Lowery discovery. Much, much music history wrapped up in that group of folks. And Jerry Reed often acknowledged that fact in interviews. I read where he was in fact in hospice care for some time. A true loss.

As for AGT, I hated Michael’s snippy comments to the judges. Sharon kept trying to tell him he was making a mistake by talking back with such vehemence, but he wouldn’t listen. I don’t think he will stay around. There are others who sing just as well and have a better presence. And I think the Elvis impersonater let last week’s praise go to his head a bit. Lost his edge. I myself do not care for Elvis impersonaters. None of them, maybe with the exception of Ronnie McDowell, truly captures Elvis’ essence. They do a mimic, instead.

D, I don’t like it that Lost is such a long wait, either. That is what they do with Heroes, too. They give it only a short run, then make you wait six months for more. Maybe it works, I don’t know.

By Deirdre

September 3, 2008 8:51 AM | Link to this

harrietth…I think people get more annoyed with the waiting but, on the other hand, the idea of doing a whole season without reruns appeals to me. Used to be, just when Lost was getting really good, along came the holidays and everything went into reruns until after the new year. With this system, Lost is like a runaway train ride..you just get on and hold onto your seats.

The controversy surrounding Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol, is getting way out of hand. She is NOT the first 17 year old to become pregnant without the benefit of marriage and I can assure you she will not be the last. The media (excuse me Rodney) has gotten ahold of it and are running with it. This in no way should be a slam to the parents in the way they raised their daughter. A child can be raised with certain upbringings and still that child will make their own choices when they become a certain age and think they old enough to make that choice. You can’t blame the parents all the time for choices their children make. No parent can be with their child 24/7. I will say one more thing about this and then I will let it drop, Let the children of the politicans alone. Being raised as a minister’s daughter, I know what it is to be in the limelight. Your every move is watched and monitored.

Amen Nana. The one thing B.O. has said that I absolutely 100% agree with is “The families should be off limits. The children should absolutely be off limits.” (well that’s not an exact quote, but close to what he said)

I’ve got AGT from last week AND this week taped to watch but haven’t had a chance yet to sit down with the remote (and fast forward button) — I’m looking forward to Mrs. Palin’s speech tonight. And yes, D, isn’t it amusing — to me, a child of the 60s — to watch the NOW-sies and the femininists get so bent out of shape because she’s a mother of 5, how DARE she think she can do a good job as a vice president yada yada. So far, I find her quite refreshing for exactly the reason you said, D — she’s NOT a DC insider!!! She’s a real person! with real problems and real family and real lifestyle!

Ace looks — well, just right, for the stage role he’s fixin’ to do!

I’ve missed you guys, but vacation was oh-so-wonderful, i could have indeed used another week or two just layin’ around on the beach!

There are a number of new shows coming up that i’m interested in watching — did anyone catch “Raising the Bar” yet? I found it “ok” but get tired of Bochco (sp?) always feeling he has to make the shows “sexy” — just give me a good story line, a good twist, good characters — i don’t mind a little hit of the bedroom, but throwing it at me every 15 minutes in between the “real” story — it’s a little too much. if i want to watch love and sex between meetings with the judge (or during them? by a gay man pretending to be hetero?) i’ll watch the soaps!!!!!!

Politics has become a series of photo-ops and sound bites. It’s hard to get to the substance of ANYTHING when all the media is looking for is scandal, errors and bad news.

That’s why it’s time for the debates to begin…and why it’s our DUTY to sit through them…boring or not…to hear what the candidates actually SAY rather than how the media interprets what they say. I think we’d all be surprised by the efforts that both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain make to reach out and address issues that are important to us.

If we stay partisan and don’t listen to BOTH candidates, then how can we say we’re making an educated and thoughtful decision? There is NO way an intelligent decision can be made based solely on what the media tells us, whether it be CNN or Fox.

And I totally agree…the candidates’ children should be off-limits… PERIOD!

I have no problem with Gov. Palin in the parenting department at all, and I am the resident Democrat here, or at least the one who owns up to it! LOL! The only thing I question is this generation (seemingly) of youth who know nothing of birth control. And that has nothing to do with the candidate herself. I am sure the daughter was made aware at an early age of the consequences of unprotected sex, and she made her own choices. I’m sure, given her “druthers,” Gov. Palin would have preferred a different scenario, but she is dealing with it the best way she knows how.

September 3, 2008 9:50 AM | Link to this

hear hear harrietth — i just laugh out loud when someone blames a parent for a child (in the teen years, i mean) making their own decisions and getting into trouble. What’s the old adage, Nana, about the preacher’s kid being the worst rebel of all? ALL teenagers rebel — even the “goodie two shoes” kind — somewhere in there is a rebellion — testing the limits is a PART of growing up, i honestly think it’s programmed into the behavior genes, LOL! Unfortunately, this time the daughter rebelled in a way that had VISIBLE consequences! BUT… the kids had already declared themselves “in love and going to be married” — a decision which I understand Mrs. Palin hoped would be a while in coming to fruition, and was sad that they didn’t wait… what parent wouldn’t be feeling the same? i say (1) leave the kids out of it and (2) quit blaming a candidate or office holder for every little thing that happens around them as if that candidate were somehow a minor god-let who could actually CONTROL events! they’re just people, folks, just people!

D’s absolutely 1000000% right — we need to listen to them ALL and pick who we feel best represents our beliefs, morals, ethics, politics, lifestyle, whatEVER criteria is important to you… the media will NEVER (sorry Rodney) give us a complete picture; it’s in the MEDIA’s best interest to give us just enough to keep us coming back for more!

harrietth…you know we love our ‘resident Democrat’! :-) I’m sure we have others(kf has also ‘owned up to it’) but they hang around during the season more than now. And I agree with you about Gov Palin. ANY mom would prefer a different scenario but you play the hand you’re dealt. She’s not the first and she won’t be the last.

linny…I didn’t see Raising the Bar but I know Rodney was surprised (on his other blog) at how good the ratings were. I think producers throw a lot of sex into the first shows just to get our attention. But really, is it any wonder that kids are having sex earlier and earlier? Hollywood seems to throw it in their faces everyday.

linny - It is true that preacher’s kids are the worst because they are put on a pestal so other teens can watch and follow our lead. We have to always set an example and be perfect, which is not possible. I was caught talking in church at the age of 15 while Dad was preaching and he stopped his sermon and if I live to be a 100, I will never forgot what he said. He said “If you young people have something more important to say, then get up here and say it,” He called me by name and said, ” I will deal with you when we get home.”. My punishment was not a whipping, but for the next three months at every church service, I had to sit on the front pew by myself. No, I don’t blame my parents for my error. I made a choice to talk knowing that it was wrong and I had to pay the consequences of my action. I really relate to children whose parents are in the public. It is not an easy task by any means. We all have made mistakes and let the one whom is without sin, cast the first stone. The one good thing to come out of this media mess, is the birth of a precious baby.

harrietth - I had forgotten about Ronnie McDowell. If you heard him and not see him, one would actually believe that Elvis was still alive.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

Nana — you perfectly portrayed what I was trying to get across!!! While some “spotlight” is inevitable if your parent is a leader of ANY sort, ie, your example, to make a media circus out of a child’s choice of behavior to try to undermine a leader is just plain WRONG!

and on the opposite side, people who say that the parents are “making” the child get married because she got pregnant — Mrs. Palin said that they youngsters had ALREADY announced they wanted to marry, before they knew she was pregnant. To make the parents responsible on BOTH sides of the coin — on the one hand, it’s your fault you didn’t keep tabs on your child, and on the other, you’re a monster for forcing them to do something they may not want to do…

um

hello?

am i the only one this circular argument seems obnoxious and ridiculous to?

anyway … Ronnie McDowell!!! I’ve not thought of him in AGES!!!

and by the way, harrietth, thank for all the extra input about Jerry Reed earlier — i remember him so well, along with so many of the names you threw out there, LOL!!! Lowery had a knack, that’s for sure!

I am an old southern Democrat from waaaaay back. I will tell anyone who asks. Some things they do and say, I agree with, some I don’t. Same as the Republicans.

If blame were being cast here, I would have to say that with Hollywood and the young stars (some not so young) having babies without marriage, the message they are projecting to our children, grandchildren, is that SEX and having babies are okay and it’s no big deal. But in my opinion, they are so very wrong. The Hollywood types are not, and I repeat, are not a role model that I would want my daughter or granddaughter to have.

D - You are no more old folksy than I am. We just have certain beliefs and standards that we were raised by and they have been instilled in us so long, they are a part of us. And that, my friend, is a compliment to our parents.

I have also heard that the baby’s paternal grandmother told the media to back off. She said that both families were aware that her son fully intended to marry Bristol long before the pregnancy. And he will be at the convention tonight for Gov. Palin’s speech.

I seem to fall somewhere beyond the pale on this old-fogeyness. Remember the 60s? There was lots of sex, for which nobody put anyone down. It was the times. But, there was one saving thing about it all, and that was “the pill.” Nobody had to get pregnant, no matter how much sex they had. It was not a moral issue at all, but one of common sense. We learned that if you had sex, you took steps not to bring an unplanned life into the world. I know there were people who did not adhere to that, but more did than not. That is why I have such a hard time understanding why the explosion of pregnancies among the youth. Contraception seems like a foreign notion.

now harrietth stealthily steps down from a soapbox sort of like D’s and promises not to worry the subject to death!

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

LOL!! It’s GOOD to have open discussions without anyone feeling like they are being singled out for some sort of discrimination! We all have, as was said, our upbringing, and our life experiences as well, to base our opinions on. No one is 100% “right” OR “wrong”!! Harrietth, I too was a big part of the 60s “revolution” — not only did we use contraception because it was such a miracle .. we also didn’t have to worry about life-threatening diseases! we changed the face of sexuality — some for the good, and some, in my opinion, we maybe went a little too far with … but i’m with you … why can’t these kids PREVENT pregnancies? or at least TRY to!!!

ah well… those were the good ol’ days, right?

but most of all right now, I’m ready for some new music competitions, LOL, i miss them!!! AGT may just have to do for a while sigh

You’re welcome.

Here I thought that today would be another boring day, but I daresay that we have our own commentary going on. And, we are all making sense and agreeing on the others remarks. A nice day indeed (so far).

I did hear this morning on my way to the office that Bristol and her baby’s father would be at the convention and that America would be able to meet him for the first time. For them to be 17 and 18, I appauld them for not letting all the media hoopla keep them from making an appearance. I hope that the stress doesn’t get to Bristol and cause any problems with the baby.

Oh yes, the good ole sixies. If only we could turn back the clock. You are both right that we didn’t have to worry about STD’s, unplanned pregnancies, nor drugs. I’m sure all three were around, it just wasn’t made public. If you got pregnant you went to a home for unwed mothers and placed your child for adoption, unless there was a marraige, and who had ever heard of STDs or aids. Sure there was pot, but that was about as strong a drug you heard about. There are more options available today than ever to prevent an unplanned pregnancy, so I just don’t understand why we have so many of them. Lack of maturity and responsbility, maybe? Alot of the times, the innocent child suffers for it and in a way that is cruel and unbearable. What a wicked web we weave sometimes. Oh, and as far as abortions to end an unwanted pregnancy, just to go out and and do it again, is plain asinine. A 10 year old (or younger) probably knows more now than I did when I married in the early 60’s. Just thinking about how some of the life styles have changed over the years, is just plain sad. I agree with changes, but only in a good way, if that makes any sense.

Just to reference Ronnie McDowell again, did you know he is a fine artist who sells his work on the Internet? There is an especially poignant portrait of a little boy (Elvis as a child) playing a small guitar and looking into a mirror, where the future Elvis is reflected back at him. His style is sort of hard to describe—more Norman Rockwell than Monet, but good. He is the only “impersonater” who ever measured up to the real thing, IMO. That movie where he did all of the Elvis singing was awesome.
