9/26: David Archuleta now has his own corn maze, more Clay Aiken coverage

archie_maze.jpg CREDIT: Craig Dilger/Daily Herald.

MJ found this. I also heard about this on the radio. A corn maze in the image of David Archuleta in Utah not far from Brigham Young University! Not even Clay Aiken fans were able to conjure this up!

-Speaking of Aiken, remember that uncomfortable interview he had earlier this year with Newsweek, where he got testy when the reporter brought up the Kelly Ripa incident and compared Newsweek to the National Enquirer? Well, here’s that reporter’s take on Aiken’s deceptions over the years.

The denials only made Aiken a bigger target in interviews, and it was mostly his own fault. He told New York magazine that he’d never had a relationship, prompting ABC News to run a story called: “Could Clay Aiken Be Asexual?” When I brought up his sexuality, his face turned into a mask of scorn, but I could tell it was a performance he’d given before. By the time I reached my last question, about “American Idol,” he seemed friendly again, though clearly uncomfortable, talking fast about nothing, in an effort to prevent any more questions about his personal life. The next week, my interview went viral, landing on a number of blogs, including Perez Hilton. The Associated Press and Entertainment Tonight even picked it up. When Aiken himself appeared on the show, he alleged that he’d been misquoted in NEWSWEEK, though misquoted over what he didn’t exactly say.

-This story on eonline notes that others who have come out have seen their career paths improve . Clay’s music career, his successful stint on “Spamalot” notwithstanding, has been sliding since the first CD, which sold 2.8 million. His xmas album moved another 1.4 million. His covers album sold just 520,000 copies. His current album? Fewer than 200,000.

-MSNBC said People paid Aiken about $500,000 for the exclusive interview and pics. A far cry from Brangelina but the story notes that People had no competition to drive prices up.

-In somewhat related news, David Hernandez has a gig at the Barcelona night club three nights a week in Scottsdale, Ariz. {More info here.](http://www.thedirty.com/?p=48822). He’ll be singing, not stripping.

-Plenty of “Idol” singers in the top 40 and country charts. Here’s a summary of each sons.

-Jordin Sparks sees her single “One Step at a Time” move up to No. 4 on the top 40 charts, a spot higher than “Tattoo.” It has a shot at No. 3 (the top 3 right now are “Disturbia,” “Closer” and a slipping “Forever”). But Pink’s “So What” and Leona Lewis’ “Better in Time” are in position to hit the top 2 very soon and leapfrot Sparks.

-David Archuleta continues to gain airplay, up from 20 to 15 with “Crush.” Top 10 is a certainty.

-Daughtry has his fifth straight top 20 hit with “What About Now,” an extraordinary run for any album, much less a debut one.

-David Cook sees “Time of My Life” slip from 33 to 36 after peaking in the mid 20s. I’m looking forward to seeing how high up ‘Light On” does.

-Carrie Underwood edges up to No. 7 with “Just a Dream” from No. 8 on the country chart.

-Bucky Covington sees his third top 20 hit “I’ll Walk” move up to No. 17 from 18.

-Kellie PIckler is struggling a bit with “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful,” which gains slightly in airplay but slips from 26 to 27.

-Kristy Lee Cook regains growth in airplay of “15 Minutes of Shame” but traction is slow: it’s up to 43 from 46.

-Josh Gracin is barely there with “Unbelievable (Ann Marie),” which slips from 53 to 54.

-Jennifer Hudson is up to No. 10 on the urban chart, moving a notch from 11.

-David Letterman’s top ten Wednesday:

Top Ten Questions People Are Asking the John McCain Campaign

  1. “I just contributed to your campaign — how do I get a refund?”

  2. “It’s Sarah Palin — does this mean I’m pars’dent?”

  3. “Can’t you solve this by selling some of your homes?”

7. “Hi, this is Clay Aiken. Is McCain single?”

  1. “Do you still think the fundamentals of our economy are strong, genius?”

  2. “Are you doing all this just to get out of going on Letterman?”

  3. “What would Matlock do?”

  4. “Hillary here — my schedule is free Friday night”

  5. “Is this just an excuse to catch up on napping?”

  6. “This is President Bush — what’s all this trouble with the economy?”

That corn maze scares me. I can’t imagine how long it would take to navigate it.

Thanks for all the other Idol news.

One could get lost in that maze and never find their way out. I wouldn’t even attempt it.

The numbers on the idol’s sale are not to bad. Carrie will probably go up to a 4 or higher. I hope she makes it to #1.

CA was on all the entertainment shows last night. ET showed him at his home and has another segment tonight there. From what they showed last night, his home is gorgeous and very well decorated. They will show more of it tonight. They also showed him feeding his son. I will watch ET again tonight to see the rest of the interview.

UM, JT…I meant in the sense that Archie is kinda corny…what did you think I meant?

The maze is a work of art. How did the artist create it? The owner is smart to make use of the corn fields after the crop, and to open to the public for fun fall activities. Archuleta is surely the biggest celebrity from Utah this year. He is such a remarkable young man with a golden voice. The figure looks just like him. Wow.

Flats, I’m shocked. Does that do anything for the Dawgs?

Deirdre, I was thinking of corn in a different sense. It’s pretty much an inside joke, but if anyone here would get it, it would be flats. That should give you an indication as to what it may be about and as to why I laugh when it comes to Archie and corn.

Josiah, from what I have read they plan the corn mazes of this nature prior to planting. The well executed ones need to be nurtured for quite sometime, which makes it all the more remarkable.

Corn! What will they do next make a statue of David out of nuts?

The corm mzae is quite awesome to see.

Well we finally made it to Friday. Now just get through the day. This has been a looooong week for me. Glad that’s almost over.

Just FYI, hubby worked last night and said after the game last night, the students in Athens went out and PARTIEEEEEEEED hard! He said there was an explosion of people celebrating after that game; good for business!! Looks like the Trojans needed a little (ahem) protection from the beavers last night, eh? oh oh oh that matchup leaves soooooooo much open to interpretation!!! gotta love it!

Hi y’all! Happy Friday! I’m donning my black already! Goooo Dawgs! :)

LOL @ Linny! That’s just too funny! And yes, the jokes are endless.

JT, are you thinking of the game? ;) For the record, a Nut statue? Noooo. lol

D, Grey’s was really great. I teared up when McDreamy was on the table. I mean,I knew it wasn’t gonna be true, but still. I do love Denny, and still think they shouldn’t have killed him. (I know, I know it helped with the story…)

The whole Clay thing: Yeah, there some backlash because he got all p** during the previous interviews. Honestly, lies catch up with you. But as someone who’s gone through a similar experience, I can understand where he is coming from. I think it’s taken him a while to be comfortable enough in himself to share that. IMO. :)

Finished watching ER and had to go up to my room and cry for an hour. They broke my heart.

linny: you are on a roll this morning girl. Gotta love your comments about the Trojans and Beavers. Bet there could be a lot of jokes on these two teams.

JT, showing my age i guess, that USED to be one of the brand names … um, you know? I think “Kimono” is one now but somehow for a football team that doesn’t quite cut it…

By Deirdre

September 26, 2008 12:03 PM | Link to this

Dr Greene will be back this season(in flashbacks..but new stuff…Anthony Edwards is returning) And they didn’t do anything to Dr Greene. That actor wanted off the show.

There are rumors that George Clooney will be back…briefly. He denies them but…if you ask me…he owes his career to that show.

Anyway, there should be lots of surprises for their final season.

David Cook’s single is out for download now I think. Don’t know when his cd will be released although I’ve heard sometime in Nov.

By Nana

September 26, 2008 12:10 PM | Link to this

The date that I heard for David Cook’s CD release is Nov 18th.

By JTesla

September 26, 2008 12:21 PM | Link to this

Linny I wouldn’t know about any of that ;)

Deirdre, the character of Dr. Greene seemed like a constant punching bag, I felt that they should have given him a happy write off. It didn’t help that I lost my mother to cancer the same week that his final episode aired, but I also told my wife when I first heard that he was leaving the show that if they killed him off I would never watch ER again. I’ve never seen another episode. Perhaps it’s a silly reason to stop watching, it’s not like they jumped the shark with it, but that’s just me.

As for David Cook, as long as it hits iTunes I’ll be happy. I don’t know how that works since I fought tooth and nail against getting anything Apple until just a few months ago. So, I’m a bit clueless there.

By Deirdre

September 26, 2008 12:41 PM | Link to this

JT…it’s perfectly understandable that you’d associate ER with your mom. My sympathies. No wonder you haven’t watched it since then.

My opinion is that ANY actor would give their eyeteeth to get sent off the way Anthony Edwards did. It was a tour-de-force performance for him and a memorable send-off for the audience. I guess his appearances this season will be brought about by the memories of the new ER chief.

By harrietth

September 26, 2008 1:12 PM | Link to this

D and JT, that episode introduced the world to Israel Kmakawiwo’ole and his version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” which, of course was done note for note by Jason Castro on Idol.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

i’ve heard a number of people who watched Grey’s say that they went to bed before the show was over; i’ve been hesitant to say anything, LOL, since i don’t want to ruin it if they are going to watch the ending later… since i didn’t watch it at all, never really got into it for some reason, it’s hard to know what would be a spoiler, except for listening to you guys!!

By Nana

September 26, 2008 1:49 PM | Link to this

Jason’s version still reminds of Tiny Tim. can’t help it. The devil made me say it.

Not a good Friday. Already had to do two terminations. Not fun at all!!!!! But, that goes with my job. I just don’t like it. All I want to do now is go somewhere and cry. Wait, I know what I’ll do. When I leave the office, I will go Christmas shopping. Yeah, that’ll work. Start my shopping and have it done, wrapped and ready to go under the tree Thanksgiving.

I really need to know what I missed on ER. Write spoiler alert on your post, so those who don’t want to know yet ! I really, really, really need to know, I forgot it was coming on. I’m good on Grey’s. PLEASE HELP!

By Deirdre

September 26, 2008 1:57 PM | Link to this

linny, Grey’s was 2 hours last night. I thought it was terrific. Sad and silly all at the same time.

SPOILER ALERT

Harmony, if you watched last season you know that someone was in the ambulance that blew up. Abby ended up with a broken wrist. Pratt was in the front seat and walked away with seemingly minor injuries. However his condition deteriorated during the course of the show and despite all their efforts, he died. It absolutely tore my heart out…especially since I met the actor who plays Pratt at the Atlanta airport a couple of years ago. Very nice man!

Nana, take a look at this link for the Kamakawiwo’ole version. Definitely not Tiny Tim. Dr. Greene’s deathbed scene was forever burned in my memory because of this song: http://ca.youtube.com/results?searchquery=israel+kamakawiwo%27ole&searchtype=&aq=0&oq=israel

Not sure how much I will help the economy, but I plan on doing some major shopping. Christmas shopping always makes me feel better, that is until I start getting the bills, then I really get a headache. But it’s fun before that happens. I always have ALL of mine done no later than the 15th of November. That way, I don’t have to worry about getting in the crowds. I can just sit back and watch everyone else fight it out. Of course, my two daughters and I get up at 2:20am the day after Thanksgiving and we hit the malls for them to do their shopping. We spend the whole day together and for me that means more than anything. I just go along for the time we spend with each other. It’s our special mother and daughters day out.

I’m about ready to wrap my day, so I will go ahead and tell everyone to have a safe trip home and drive careful. Have a great week-end.

To all of you who love Donald Braswell, I have found a site for him. He actually recorded a CD prior to going on AGT, but it was small-time. The most interesting thing I found was that he studied at Julliard and had a professional opera career going when he was hit by the car. Here is the link: http://www.donaldbraswell.com/

GAgirl way to go. I usually start the day after Christmas because of the bargins, then buy throughout the next several months. Then at this time of the year, I really get serious and shop. I completed gifts for 5 more family members last night. Going back today and see if I can complete more. As the saying goes, “Getta er done.”
