His examples:”Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” is down nearly 50% among 18 to 49 year olds and among all viewers, it has dropped 35% year over year. “Deal or No Deal” is down 29%. “Dancing With the Stars” is down a more modest 9 percent (and given the age of the show, that’s really not unusual). “Survivor” is down 10%, which given that it’s the 17th incarnation, isn’t bad either. He didn’t mention it but “America’s Next Top Model” is down at least 20% year over year, too.

Shows that are up this year? “NCIS,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Gossip Girl” and “30 Rock,” to name a few.

The evidence in my mind is dubious. I suspect most of these shows are simply getting old. (“5th Grader” is the only one that is relatively young.) But it is true that new concepts for reality TV have been scarce lately, especially on broadcast TV.

It’s interesting that CBS is doing especially well nowadays. Perhaps that older demographic is looking for comfort in shows such as “The Mentalist” and “NCIS.” And I’m glad “Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother” are doing so well.

I digress. I’m just wondering how much of a hit “American Idol” will take come January. Ratings dropped off some 10 percent last year. I suspect the show will lose another 10 percent this year but perhaps more if the cast isn’t that interesting. But even if “Idol” loses 20%, it’d still be the No. 1 show by a wide margin. In the fall, not a single show is averaging even 20 million viewers a week.

What’s your prediction on ratings for “Idol” this January? Last year, it was around 27-28 million after averaging 30 million plus seasons five and six. I think it will fall to 23-24 million season eight.

Last night, I helped out with a Boys & Girls Club cook off as a “celebrity” cook. Five families from around the country were flown in to compete for a trip to Disney and a year’s supply of Kimberly-Clark products. One of the judges? Ruben Studdard’s mom Emily! She was at the opening for “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” for her son. She said she plans to go to every show when it arrives in his hometown of Birmingham in February. She also helped my team, the Archers, win. Thank you Emily!

-Chris Daughtry was an actor last night on the 100th episode of “CSI: NY.” He plays Mac Taylor, one of several who are there to be protected because a serial killer is killing Mac Taylors.

-First-day sales at hitsdailydouble.com are projecting that David Cook is battling for #2 with Nickelback behind Beyonce in first week sales. Cook is looking to sell 300K the first week. David Archuleta sold about 180K last week, a bit below projections. Taylor Swift sold about 600K.

I agree with you Rodney, the evidence is dubious. I would think that in troubled times people wouldn�t want to watch death in NCIS. Comedy I can understand, but NCIS throws everything off. 5th grader and Deal or No Deal are just getting stale, 5th grader just got stale quicker then some other game shows.

My prediction for Idol: it will be down, and there will be a loud rambling from the media that it is dead, some Idol producer will point out that it is still by far the top show, and the media will ignore that and continue digging the grave that they started digging two seasons ago.

JT, NCIS is chock-full of humor!!! While it’s a csi-type show, there’s so much undercurrent of mild ribaldry, sarcasm, puns, characters who are almost pistaches of reality… it’s as much fun as it is mystery! plus…speaking of sexy men… Mark Harmon would be one I would DEFINITELY have on my list!!! Weatherly is so funny sometimes it hurts, and Pauly Perette and Cote de Pablo are interesting AND sometimes humerous characters… can you tell i’m a fan???

I’m kinda with you, Rodney, on the Idol ratings for this coming season. Obviously, at this point, the show isn’t really going to gain any NEW viewers in significant numbers. And some previously loyal viewers will start to drop out. However, the show is still fun and worthy of good “watercooler” conversations, so I don’t think there will be a huge drop yet.

I DO think that people who watch regularly see it as a show that the whole family can enjoy together.

I see the show lasting for 10 seasons but probably not beyond that. I think season 9, depending on what happens this year, will be the first time Idol isn’t #1 in the ratings. This year, it won’t always be #1 but will hit that mark frequently.

LOL…. nah, it’s a lot more than that…frequently it isn’t even “dead people” tho’ often it is… for example the current thread was about finding a traitor in their midst… Weatherly is almost always a hoot, something stupid/funny/amusing/ there’s a bit of slapstick about the show… a lot of fun, imho. the mysteries are usually well done for an hour-long (read that 40-minute, after commercials) show … sometimes quite a surprise, sometimes you sit there going “it’s X, you idiots!!!) but the interplay between the characters is really really well done. IMHO of course.

We need to balance things out here a little bit! My vote, and probably not a surprise here, would be for Kim Kardashian. “The Superficial” had pictures of her in a bikini a few days ago WOW! Second place would go to Rihanna. Honorable mention goes to the young woman that gets on the light-rail train at the Sunset station; she�s the only person in the world that can make those stupid looking “Uggs” look sexy.

Okay I’m back with my pick for sexist man alive… In the younger generation I would have to say Jake Gyllenhaal, although I could be his grandmother and not his mom as D stated she could be if she were 10 years younger. In the older generation would have to be George Strait.

As far as the stats on AI, I think the first few weeks will be okay and I say that only because of the new judge. People will want to scope her out and in turn will judge her and do a comparison between her and Paula. After that the novelty will likely wear off.

Did any of you catch the L&O:NY with Daughtry? I’d DVR’d it, and watched it last night… Kind of cute — he was a sort of rebellious tough guy type, but NOT the bad guy. Had a whole little scene (maybe 2 minutes) where he got to “show out” … they used one of his songs … which is why i think they had him in there. Also a “walk on” by Marcus Faulk (f/b player) in a nightclub scene… not sure WHY but i guess he just wanted to be on TV, LOL!

well, as someone has already said, TGIF; it’s been a weird week at work, hopefully will get better next week!!

Re Denny on GA…I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet but I’m kinda expecting all this to lead to Izzie’s leaving the show. The actress has been quite vocal(in a really mouthy kinda way) about wanting out of the show. Maybe they’re letting Izzie have a breakdown of some kind but allowing the audience to see her happy, even though Denny isn’t really there…or is he?

I can see that kf might be just a teensy bit excited about her trip to Charlotte. :-) Have fun and report back to us! I saw Kelly and Reba on Crossroads the other night. They are really good together.

If I played for kf’s team, I think Halle Berry is gorgeous. Sorry JT, but I just find Kim Kardashian to be trashy looking. I DO realize that that’s part of the appeal however.

Between Denny and McHunky Dr Hunt on Grey’s, I can hardly pay attention to the dialogue.

I have to admit that Kim looks spectacular in that bikini. It’s when she’s fully(or at least her version of fully) dressed that I have a problem. I’m not attracted to blatant sexuality in apparel or demeanor.

While K&Cfan is trying to figure out just what she wants to do while hanging around with Kelly or Carrie, I’ll throw out a few names for JT to ponder.

I was afraid someone would mention Angelina Jolie, sorry but I have never found her to be even remotely attractive. Heather Locklear is close to the same, Kate Winslet and Jennifer Aniston… meh. Now, Evangeline Lilly, well she almost got me to watch Lost. I�ll also throw out Jennifer Love Hewitt; she did get me to watch a season of Ghost Whisperer.

Now I know that some people around here like to see some love given to the older ladies, so I�ll throw out a few other names: Tilda Swinton, Annette Bening, and Catherine O�Hara. To borrow a phrase from a few days ago: I wouldn�t kick them out of bed for eating crackers. In fact if Tilda did her makeup and hair like she had it in The Chronicles of Narnia, I�d provide the crackers.

As for Tilda Swinton…if she would wear make-up AT ALL she’d look good but that pale wispy look isn’t popular in my house. Terrific actress, though. As is Annette Bening.
