12/16: David Cook interview and video performance at the Q100 Christmas concert

david-cook-horizontal-eyes-close.jpg

I spoke briefly with David Cook before the Q100 “Miracle on West Peachtree Street” Christmas concert Monday night. He was not wearing any makeup and had no bags under his eyes despite the whirlwind of the past few months. He actually looked relaxed and happy.

But first, here’s a video I took of Cook from the concert where his brother Andrew dressed up as Santa and presented him with a birthday cake before he performed “Bar-Ba-Sol.” Cook turns 26 on Dec. 20. My camera took a few seconds to focus.

I asked him about how he felt his single and album were doing. “Knock on wood, so far, so good,” he said. Both are “still making forward progress. If everything holds up, we can hit gold [500,000 albums sold] this week.”

“Do you think ‘Light On’ can beat Archuleta’s ‘Crush’?” I asked.

“I don’t know! That song is a juggernaut. If I can get even close, I’ll be happy.” [“Crush” peaked at about 15 on the radio pop chart. Not quite a juggernaut but a solid opener for the Arch.]

I asked what he was up to next week. ‘I’m going to be off the grid for two weeks until New Year’s. This is my last gig until the Mirage [in Vegas.] This will give me a chance to reflect on the last year, try to feel normal.”

david-cook-smiling-xmas.jpg

“How come you don’t look tired at all?” I asked. “You have no bags under your eyes!”

“I have a band full of friends and a bunch of amazing people that make this a whole lot easier,” he said.

“How did you manage to get two weeks off? Wouldn’t the label want you to work nonstop, even through Christmas?”

“Back in June, I fought, I begged and pleaded and screamed. It worked!”

“You’re battling David Archuleta on the VH1 video countdown. I saw he was No. 1 last week and you were No. 2.”

“We’ve been going back and forth. I think it’s just a testament to our fan bases. My video debuted at No. 1, went back, then 1, now 2.”

And he noted that he’s grateful. “Second place is a lot higher than I was charting before ‘Idol’!”

david-cook-serious-xmas.jpg

“So are you at all tired of talking about ‘Idol’?”

“In all honesty, ‘Idol’ is my meal ticket. I busted my chops for 10 years. ‘Idol’ gave me the platform to make people listen. I owe ‘Idol’ quite a bit.”

“What are you going to do in the new year?”

“We’re going to hit the road. It’s going to be an all-college tour in the spring. I remember I have an older brother’s Indiana State college yearbook, Larry Bird’s senior year. It had all these pages of concerts like Elvis Costello. You look at the current landscape of acts. Not a lot do college campuses. I want to bring it to the people who don’t get a lot of entertainment amid all the textbooks and make it fun.”

Summer, he noted, is still wide open. “If anybody is interested, call me!”

He’s still not sure of a second single. “We still want to give ‘Light On’ room to breath,” he said.

“A friend of mine wanted to know about the eyeliner. Why so much?”

“The eyeliner is more out of necessity. I’m a pale man of Irish, English and German descent. Anything to make the eyes pop amid stage lights! It stands ot reason. I just don’t want to go nuts. I went nuts on tour a little bit. I’ll scale back.”

“You missed your friend Michael Johns by a couple of days. Do you miss the ‘Mavid’ dancing?”

“I will tell you. We never did any serious dancing on the tour. Mike and I had fun with the ‘Mavid’ thing. But the show was basically stage blocking. We should never consider that dancing.”

“No dancing tonight, right?”

“A little rock star preening and holding on to the mike stand for dear life!” [Would you consider what he’s doing below preening? :) )

david-cook-vertical-intense.jpg

-Thank you MJ for linking to my Michael Johns video. And since I had so little time yesterday, I didn’t post a good summary of what Ken Warwick said during the press conference and with other media.

here is what MJ consolidated very well.

In summary of the summary, we’ll be seeing a bit more backstage shenanigans, which i think could be fun. Giving the judges full power to pick three of the top 12 is a bit problematic to me but perhaps some good contestants overlooked by the voters might get through.

The theme for the semifinals will be top 10 songs from the 1950s to today. Pretty broad, which is good. He also said Motown’s 50th anniversary means a Motown for sure. He also wants younger guest mentors.

He also said he knew nothing about Paula Goodspeed’s issues, repeating Nigel Lythgoe. Paula Abdul’s job is safe, he noted. He told EW that he added a fourth judge to take some power away from Simon Cowell. The two ladies will occasionally gang up on him, he said.

Morning!

Thanks for the video, Rodney! It just confirms that David Cook is a really great guy. I’m looking forward to reading the interview.

So I’m starting to think this is a conspiracy. All these former Idols are showing up in Atlanta keeping Rodney too busy to switch us to,our new format.

Then again, Rodney is getting lots of scoops before MJ so it’s like a Christmas present for him! :-)

Morning, D and all. Rodney, great stuff! Thanks for all of your efforts. I also thought you looked great and handled yourself really well on the Michael J video interview.

I guess most everyone has had visions of sugarplums and other pre-Christmas things keeping them occupied lately. I noticed a distinct lack of blog posts the past few days, and guess it is that and also the low before the high that Idol’s new season brings.

At my work, we are winding down toward being shut down for over a week during Christmas and immediately after. I will have to get myself up and checking the blog from home. Has everyone gotten their shopping done? Mine is only half done.

Rodney Don’t know whether you’ve noticed or not but MJ has put your interview with Michael Johns on her site(she probably got your permission) Anyway, the comment section is praising you a lot for a relaxed but very informative interview.

It makes us all VERY proud! :-)

harrietth…I WISH I had half my shopping done. I have so much to do that it makes my head spin. I think many of us are in the same boat since the blog is so slow. I get all my blogging done with my morning coffee then try to “fill in” during the rest of the day.

I just read your Cook interview. You ask some good questions.

I LOVE that he’s going on a college tour. I remember all the great acts I saw while I was in college. It didn’t happen at Tech or at State for my kids…not as much, at least.

And I thought the eyeliner question was very appropriate. Being pale and of Irish descent…I know exactly where he’s coming from. Those lights are harsh and tend to wash out what color you DO have. He’ll find a good balance.

I guess my question didn’t get through to you in time. I am really curious about song #11 on the album - I can’t remember the name though. I hope it was a good show all around - although Cook is the only act I would have wanted to see on that bill. Thanks for a good interview. And by the way, some of us girls dig guys in eyeliner!!!

D - my fav holiday song is O Holy Night. There is a version by a country artist (from Georgia) by the name of John Berry. I swear, everytime I hear it performed by him, I get chillbumps on my arms!!!

By Deirdre

WOW! Lara…I just listened to John Berry’s version of O Holy Night. He has a wonderful voice and he sings it so simply. It has a non-classical, very American sound but still honors the song. Very good!

Lara, I love John Berry’s voice, too. He has been around awhile. I’ve always loved his “Your Love Amazes Me.” His O Holy Night is simply splendid. Thanks for reminding me about him.

Hi D,

Yes..lots and lots of rain yesterday and heavy snow in the higher mountains. But we need the rain badly. And it is very chilly for SoCal. Today looks better but they are prediciting some additional rain this week.

Great interview: “Second place is a lot higher than I was charting before Idol.” Classic.

I actually look forward to having the judges pick 3 of the top 12 (that is if I’m reading your summary of a summary correctly). The voting audience just won’t have the exposure to the contestants that the judges have had.

harrietth: I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but everything is looking good ;)

By Deirdre

December 16, 2008 11:02 AM | Link to this

JT…I agree completely about the wild card. The voting audience doesn’t always get it right. I know you’re not an Aiken fan but the guy came in second and he was a wild card pick by the judges.

David Cook seems like a really nice guy, doesn’t he?

By harrietth

JT, I have loved this season of Heroes. Thanks for discussing it with me! It has been fun. I really look forward to next season now. And, now we have Lost coming, as well as “our” American Idol! And, I think the what’s old is new idea will work well.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

December 16, 2008 11:08 AM | Link to this

I think my favorite O Holy Night still has to be JOhnny Mathis — maybe because it was the first i remember hearing? in any event, the song by most anyone with talent is a most incredible musical work!!!

I wonder how it would sound by Donald Braswell or Neil whats-his-name from AGT!

catchya later, crew!! keep on keeping on…

Oh. Do any of you listen to Transiberian Orchestra or Mannheim Steamroller? Their Christmas albums are simply, in a word, “supercalifragalisticexpealidocious!”

linny…Mannheim Steamroller albums were always my younger son’s favorites so they are on the cd player during Christmas every year.

I like my Josh Groban cd and my older son has to have A Charlie Brown Christmas cd playing every year. Hubby is into bluegrass so we listen to that, too.

Deirdre: Aiken is the perfect example. I don’t care for his post Idol music, and I like to tease the Claymates. However, I can’t deny that keeping him out of Idol would have been very detrimental for the show. Singers that work for the show often times don’t work for anything else, and that’s ok.

By harrietth

December 16, 2008 11:20 AM | Link to this

Absolutely, D! I hated the mosh pit, too. Completely took away from the performances. And, linny, I have almost every Mannheim Steamroller CD there is. Missing one or two, but most of them. I love the Johnny Mathis version of O Holy Night, but I love Perry Como’s version, too. His Ave Maria is wonderful, as well.

By harrietth

December 16, 2008 11:24 AM | Link to this

I have a huge pile of Christmas CDs on my desk right now. I have Harry Connick,Jr., Mannheim Steamroller, Perry Como, Josh Groban, Harry Belafonte, Michael Crawford, Nat King Cole, Morman Tabernacle Choir, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, and Christmas with Robert Shaw with the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus.

Good Afternoon!!!!

Have been really busy at the office the last two days. End of the year bonuses and performance reviews to process, dealing with auditors. Only have a few minutes now.

I have scanned over the last several days comments and will add to the list of favorite Christmas songs. My all time favorite has got to be O Holy Night sung by my late hubby. His voice was very much like Donald Braswell. I do love to hear John Berry, in fact I purchased JB’s Christmas CD just for that one song, although there isn’t a bad song on there. It’s an excellent cd. I too, listen to Transiberian Orchestra and Mannheim Steamrollers. Another fav of mine is Kenny G.

You all should see my puppy!!! She is adorable. She is black with a little light brown on her face and paws. Right now she weights about 10 ounces, but she has alot of energy. When she runs, all she does is bounce. She is just so t-tiny. My brother could not have given me a more perfect gift and her name (Memory) is perfect for her. Everytime I see or hold her, I cry just knowing that she is the last thing he gave me before his death.

My payroll just came in, so I will catch up later…………….

December 16, 2008 2:54 PM | Link to this

Shoot, I can’t even get myself a bonus and that’s the pits. I process them for everyone in the plant/warehouse but not the office employees.

At any rate, its time for me to head home and check on memory. Take care, be safe, good, and happy. Be careful while driving.

I am so glad you guys like John Berry too! I used to go see him play when I was in college in Athens! He is absolutely amazing. Haven’t heard much from him since his surgeries for the brain tumours I think I read that he had.
I also like the Christmas songs when Elvis sings them. He always put so much emotion into them.

Although, I did get this one cd, and this is a stretch for most of you - A Heavy Metal Christmas and a Headbanging New Year! It is a collection of songs by various hard rock artists, including Alice Cooper. It is definately good for a laugh, even though some songs are great!

I wonder if this would make a good “theme night” on idol - Classic Christmas (Holiday) songs? Would someone pull out Draedel Draedel Draedel!?!?!?

Morning!

A quote from next week’s TV Guide in their The Year in Cheers and Jeers:

CHEERS to David Cook for bringing genuine emotion to American Idol. The heart-tugging story of his brother Adam’s battle against brain cancer made the rocker’s victory even more bittersweet. Besides, anyone who can wring tangible angst out of pop dross like Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello” and Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” deserves to be worshipped.

Nana, Memory sounds like a cutie! I’m sure she’ll provide lots of companionship and amusement.

D: Thanks for the quote from TV Guide. DC seems to be a very humble and down to earth person. I admire him so much for not using his brother’s illness to further his career, as some would do. I would love to meet him in person just to have a chat with him.

k&cfan: Memory is a joy and comfort to me. No longer than I have had her (5 days) I just can’t imagine not having her. Half the time I call her precious memory. When I’m at home, she will follow every step I make. last night, she wanted to play and to hear her bark and growl was so funny. She will bring me hours of enjoyment.

Indeed Nana, she IS a precious Memory!!! in so many ways!!! I am so glad you have her!

I’ve always thought that Cookie would be a fun person to know. All that I’m reading reinforce that feeling.

While Archie is talented and gracious and sweet, i’m not so sure i would have found him a “fun” person to know. But then maybe that’s because he’s closer in age to being a GRAND child to me, while Cookie could qualify at least as a child, LOL.

Other performers were Brian McKnight and Natalie Cole. It was on last night, but airs again on Sunday night at 8pm. He also sent out a picture of his family with the new baby - so cute! Maybe if I send it to Rodney, he can post it. He also has a new Christmas song that you can download from his website text to be linked for free - it is called “Very Merry Christmas”.

Rodney,

If you had done your homework, you would have known that an Atlanta musician wrote Bar-ba-sol. He was the singer/lead guitarist in the Atlanta band Injected. At least give the guy some props by trying to be a journalist.

By JTesla

December 17, 2008 1:50 PM | Link to this

Your attempt to criticize Rodney for not naming the musician who wrote the song has failed. If you are going to be critical of someone for not naming the writer maybe next time YOU should include their name. Seriously, give the guy some props by telling us his name!

However, I think it is quite silly to name the writer, city of origin, and other relevant data for every single song that is referenced in the blog. It would be a waste of space.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

December 17, 2008 1:52 PM | Link to this

a’roid - you really really come across as snotty and condescending. Rodney didn’t need to give writing credit on a particular song, he was talking about Cook’s performance — If every journalist stopped to detail every writer, co-writer, lyricist, musician, etc. on every song they review or comment about in passing, nothing else would get done. ALL Rodney says is that Cook performed the song and commented about his brother’s Santa antics on stage… could you possibly get YOUR head out of YOUR name and realize not everyone will say and do everything YOU think should be said or done? Duh?

sheesh. And Cook IS by the way given credit as a co-writer, because he took the DEMO of the song and revised it considerably to reflect his own style. just so you know.

By Nana

December 17, 2008 2:37 PM | Link to this

A’roid, who died and left you in charge? Your comments were off base and very rude.. Rodney was talking about his interview with David Cook and he did not have to mention the name of of the song the writer. So I suggest that the next time you get your pants in a wad, think before you speak. Your criticism of Rodney is not welcome here, however, you are welcome as long as you are decent about your comments.

My apologies to all for expecting a bit more from a journalist. It is my opinion that it would be interesting for the Atlanta connection to be mentioned in the article. Especially since the live video he posted was a performance of the song from that Atlanta connection. That’s all I was asking. I suppose I could have just kissed butt and said great article!! Way to go! Rodney you’re the man! But in the interest of solid and interesting journalism, we should be treated to any relevant info on the subject discussed. Do you think Rodney knew that it was an Atlanta musician who wrote the song? If so and he decided not to bring it up, I think that is poor journalism as that fact is interesting. Keep in mind that DC always mentions from whom and where that song came, thus it would be in-bounds to bring up the connection. But that is his decision. Lastly, if he did not know, then we are reading half researched information. If you are cool with that, fair enough. I just like to know the whole story. If Brad Pitt were in town to promote a movie and that movie had a strong Atlanta connection(say the director was from the ATL), I believe we would like to know about it. Again, this is just my little opinion.

Here’s the thing ‘roid. There IS a middle ground between kissing butt and rude remarks.

How about this…next time, when you feel a journalist has left out a key ingredient to an otherwise good article you say…”hey Rodney, did you know that so and so from Atlanta wrote that song? Isn’t it great that Cook chose a song to sing with an Atlanta connection?”

No butt kissing…no rudeness…just a genuine and interesting contribution to the blog. Take the “bass” out of your name and join in the fun!

Nana…while i dont agree with everything assteroid wrote, dont you think your opening line and closing line are a bit…hypocritical? who died and left you in charge? and were your pants not in a wad as well? just testing to see if you are objective. kinda funny. my sister once got mad at my brother for making fun of her for crying all the time. she was crying when she called him out.

And we still don’t know what his name is.

True, JT. come on ‘roid…what’s the guy’s name?

AJ…you’ve been around here before I think…welcome back. But take it easy on Nana…she just lost a close family member in a car accident. Not that she isn’t perfectly capable of defending herself…just do us all a favor and cut her some slack.

I think the guys name is Danny Grady. He was the lead singer and guitar player for Injected. I got that from my album credits and google.

Thank you defender of Danny… I mean roidster.

Thank you defender. See how easy that is. If someone had just come on and given us the info with giving us an ‘attitude’…we would have welcomed the input. We’re nice people here who like the show and are interested in whatever you may have to tell us about it. :-)

Welcome back AJ. In answer to your question about me being hypocritical in my comment, I don’t believe I was. I was not criticizing anyone, but merely stating a fact that one doesn’t need to attack Rodney. If I offended you or anyone else, I apologize. I do tend to stand up for my friends and speak my mind and if you or anyone doesn’t agree, that’s okay. It seems like you were the one who had a problem with my comment.

A’roid: my apologies to you as well.

Thanks Deirdre for speaking on my behalf.

Someone told me that “Bar-Ba-Sol” was written by an Atlantan a few weeks back. Simply didn’t enter my brain when I wrote that item. I should have written about it at the time the guy emailed me about it. I in fact have his phone number. I should call him. Give Assteroid some slack folks though I appreciate you defending me!

Morning!

Rodney..it wasn’t Assteroid’s point that we questioned so much as his tone. A simple reminder without the “attitude” would have been better.

Nana..you would do the same for me under similar circumstances! :-) Give Memory a hug for me…I love puppies(especially when I’m not the one who has to clean up after them).

I know we have moved on to a new blog, but I have to post something here in response. I have been trying to teach my dad something…Maybe it is not WHAT you said, but HOW you said it. I do find it interesting that there is that Atlanta connection - so contribute - it is a blog, so that is kinda what it is for…adding more information along the way.

I have always been a big fan of Injected! Danny is an awesome writer and performer! I am glad that his songs are getting some attention!!! Ahhh, those days at Smiths Old Bar….

I was so disgusted to listen Tuesday a lady saying she went to party with this guy and his brother, apparently she said they ended up in the hotel. Woman, if you slept with his brother don’t say it to everyone on the radio, and keep your private life to yourself.

Thanks Rodney for understanding my critique. Perhaps my tone came across as vitriolic. Funny though that an inference of attitude or anger can send people into attack mode doubling or tripling the aggression with their responses. Re-read all what was written and I think you will see that while my tone was demanding, the responses to it were emotional and caustic. I imagine Rodney’s editor is 10x the anus you guys think I am.

Lastly, I will however not apologize for expecting more from an AJC writer. All writers who work for the AJC get wicked(not the New England meaning) responses for much of what they write. Why should entertainment writing be held in any less regard than a piece about national or international news? Read Jim Wooten or Cynthia Tucker. They get pummeled from the masses. T. Moore gets killed every day. The bottom line is, we are readers who wish to be either educated or entertained. Sometimes both. We should demand the best or else we walk with the ignorant.

‘roid….sorry you felt we were being vitriolic.

I think the point we were trying to make is that this is a blog…not an article. It is meant to be added to or subtracted from by the readers. You clearly had something to add and the addition would have been welcomed by all who read Rodney’s blog. So why not just add it…instead of expecting the writer to know “everything”…or at least details that you think are important.

What I’m trying to say is that a blog is a collaborative effort. So collaborate! :-)

“bassteroid” are you Danny Grady? You seem hesitant to type out that name, almost as if you feel as if that one step might be a bit too boastful or show a bit too much pride.

That being said, ‘roid…we DO tend to jump to Rodney’s defense. That stems from some rather ugly incidents not based on Rodney’s writing but on more personal issues. Sorry if we mis-read your intentions.
