12/18: David Archuleta at Star 94’s Jingle Jam with video and photos
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ABOVE: David Archuleta singing Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.” A “classic” for a 17 year old, I fathom.
I didn’t get a chance to talk to David Archuleta but I got some video and took a few photos from his six-song, 25-minute performance at Gwinnett Arena for Star 94’s Jingle Jam.
This was the first time in recent memory that Jingle Jam was not sold out. Last year, more than 10,000 people came to see the Jonas Brothers, Avril Lavigne (and Elliott Yamin). This time, I guess there were at most 6,000 people there. In fact, they moved the stage forward to help make it look fuller. The problem: no obvious headliner. Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw performed after Archuleta (though I only came for David.)
I posted the video below of him getting an early Christmas cake from his band on stage. (He turns 18 on December 28.) The crowd sang him “Happy Birthday” impressively offkey. The cake had trick candles so he couldn’t blow them out. He then sang “Crush,” his hit, and “The Christmas Song.” I uploaded this onto YouTube last night and hadn’t even linked it. This morning, it already had more than 1,100 views. Amazing! (The videos I uploaded of him surprising Q100 viewers a few weeks back are already up to 37,000 combined views.)
I have to say he was his usual charming, aw-shucks self and he sounded great. Here are some more photos I took of him.

I’ll get to Simon Cowell’s comments from Wednesday’s press conference tomorrow. (I’m going on vacation for the next week so I’m going to probably be a little lighter on the content than usual until December 29, when we launch on Wordpress!)

Rodney thanks for the report on the Archie show (ok so there were two others but…. who??) The kid is indeed talented … and hey! it’s great that your uploads are being well-accessed!!!! praise to you, o fearless leader
Seriously, tho… nice to see the youngster doing well and obviously enjoying himself.
Once again, you have a great vacation and just don’t worry your li’l head about all of us sitting around with nothing to do [for those who want to pounce on THAT, it’s called sarcasm or tongue-in-cheek]

What a nice report on Archie. It’s good to know that he is doing well and enjoying every aspect of it. It goes without saying that the kid has talent and I wish him the best that life has to offer him.
Rodney, enjoy your much needed vacation and have a Very Merry & Joyous Christmas!!!!!!

Might have to stay away today if the Archies find this one….

I was there, Gavin was great. Really didnt seem like alot of people there though. I though it was a pretty good show. I really think that archuletta needs to work on his performing skills though. He seemed wooden to me. Seems like a nice kid though, I just dont see him in it for the long run. Sweet though.

Thanks for the first hand report Rebecca. It’s interesting that there was such a smaller crowd. I would think that Archie would be a bigger draw than the Jonas Brothers. Maybe Avril brought in the people, I’d go see Avril.

Hey beck, nice of u to join us.He should be polished and rocking the stage cause he was on american idol. His wooden look might be cause his brother ripped him off last week.Arch probally would have given him the money if had asked him for it.Thanks again for joining us today and keep rocking idol style!

Hate to be a wet blanket, but David Archuleta scares me…His dad appears to be a quasi-menacing, “I’m high on crack” Danny Bonaduce look a like, his brother stole money from him — how likely is it that David Arch is genuinely an “aw shucks willaker” kinda kid? I bet you he chews and spits glass and curses like a sailor when no one’s around. Great videography, Rodney!

Thanks for posting this. I got here from mjsbigblog. I think Rodney that some of your video’s have been linked to from some David Fansites.
Negativo- I think David is very new still, so many people still don’t know about him. It seems from watching the videos that he got a great reception. Hopefully, as he gets exposed to new people who are not familiar with him or who have preconeived notions from idol, he will draw new fans. The Jonas Brothers have been out for a while- 3 albums beginning in 2006, and they have the Disney machine behind them. I was just in Disneyland last week and they shove Miley and the Jonas Brothers down your throat.
BTW- congrats to Cook for reaching gold with his album.

I didn’t see anything David did in his videos as wooden, but I guess everyone has their own perspective.
Sorry to invade your blog, but I am just very curious where anyone heard that David’s brother stole money and that David is spending his money like a madman. Every interview I have ever heard where people ask David about what he has spent money on, he says that he hasn’t even spent his $100,000 from star search- that he only buys food. If you don’t mind, I would love to know.

Linda, thanks for stopping by again. It is always good to get comments from an intelligent-pro-Archuleta stand point. Personally, I’d rather see Archie then the Jonas Brothers. Of course that isn’t saying much: I’d pick watching a screeching walrus over seeing the Jonas Brothers.

JTesla- I assumed that the Jonas Brothers were fantastic but had never heard them until recently. I was really suprised that they are so popular after hearing them. They have some musical talent, but singing isn’t their best talent. I guess Miley has a huge following as well. Puzzling to me!

I was there and it was phenomenal, he did an amazing job, too bad his set was too short for me, I was sitting on floor and my row was almost empty and people came minutes before his set and then left. I was surprise with Colbie, everyone was sitting during her performance. I loved Gavin’s set too but when I noticed almost everyone was gone. The concert was too long x a Wednesday show but I had a great time.

Looks like most of these people who comment don’t have their facts correct. If they would of had Archuleta headlining then the place would have been packed. Colbie and Gavin just didn’t cut it, Archuleta’s way beyond them and he’s just starting. 90% were there for David, sorry haters. If you don’t have correct facts then why bother commenting, don’t stir things up. Great article btw.

Tracy, if you’ll read back, you’ll see that 99% of the comments you call hater comments are actually one person. Word of advice: ignore.
If you’ve read any of this blog over the last year, you will see that while many of us are not absolute Archuletta fans 100% forever and a day, we DO appreciate his talent, worry about his future, have discussed his dad’s role in his professional life, and some even ARE fans who come in (like Linda) to report to us more coherent and intelligent information, which we always appreciate. The BS rumors, button-pushing and rumor-mongering are usually either totally ignored, or if necessary, responded to by someone who just can’t ignore it “any more”. Please come again, report to us your findings and feelings, and join in the discussions. We never demand that everyone think/feel/opine the same way we do, as long as there is respect for diverse opinions (and no name-calling or disrespectful personal comments directed at hurting others).
We don’t expect everyone to feel the way one of us might feel about a performer, and we don’t want to be called “haters” just because we don’t agree with someone else’s opinion.
Rodney’s a great host, has some great contacts and links, and provides us AI’ers a home-away-from-home to blog and interact. We’d love to have you and anyone else who likes to discuss not only AI but the general competitive talent “reality” TV shows such as DWTS, SYTYCD, AGT, etc.
Happy Holidays [choose your preference] and from me — Merry Christmas!!

Linny- mjsbigblog is kind of the same way. She reports on all of the idols and MOST people (even if they aren’t huge fans of a particular idol) are respectful. It is definitely hard to hear someone diss your fav. You have to have a thicker skin if you go to a general blog, but I like the diverse opinions.
BTW, I loved SYTYCD this past year.

Linda, we love MJ here, too, lol! She and Rodney have a great symbiotic relationship, it seems!!! and i agree, SYTYCD this last season was awesome! Those were some fine dancers!!! A blog where everyone always agrees with each other is really boring … how many ways can one say “i love xyz” before you really want someone to jump in with something negative, LOL!!! Discussion amidst disagreement, with respect for the people and their views, is so much more interesting .. and like Deirdre says, we LEARN so much this way!!!
You, for example, have really added to our lore on li’l David, because it just so happens that most of the regular bloggers here were more Cookie fans. Not that we did not appreciate Archie … and we certainly would defend him as a talent!!! So glad you decided to keep poppin’ in with us!!!

mj had some trouble with “fan Wars” during season 5. she now keeps a heavy finger on the delete button…a little too heavy for my taste but it’s her blog, she runs it well and she’s always full of information. I admire her dedication.
We’re a public blog and people only get deleted or banned when they’ve crossed the line too many times to count. Being public, we run into ALL kinds here and sometimes it isn’t very pleasant. Fortunately, we regulars are made of strong stuff and either ignore offending comments or go to the Comment Removal Request area in the column to our left.
We love newbies who stick around and become regulars. Most of us who are currently regs entered this blog with an attitude and stayed on to make some really great friends.

Wow, I feel like I started something without meaning to! My opinions and speculations about David Archuleta are my own, and are also gleaned from various and ‘unofficial’ sources. I’m certainly not the only person out there though that’s heard some not so scintillating things about his father and such, hey, it’s part of being in the limelight. I am a HUGE American Idol fan but that doesn’t mean I like all of the contestants, sad but true. David struck me throughout the show as nauseatingly sweet and innocent, I know he’s young but his age still didn’t convince me that it was not fake and contrived. He basically doesn’t pass my smell test but, AI’s not a personality show but a singing show! And he does have the pipes to make it, for the record I like his song on the radio. Sorry to the Arch fans reading if I offend, I’m just more of a Michael Johns and David Cook kinda person. More than AI, I’m a huge Rodney Ho fan; he’s one of the few journalists out there that do an exceptional job of being objective, diplomatic, and inclusive of all thoughts and ideas. He was voted this year’s BEST Features Columnist in Atlanta Magazine, give him props!

And RoHo Fan…I feel the same way about Archie but, because there are a number of Mormon kids in my town, I am aware that many of them are similar in nature. Always polite, smiling and not very communicative. Shy and very respectful with adults.
I LOVE Michael Johns’ voice. And David Cook was my choice for the winner this year…however, I think Michael would have given him a run for his money if he had stayed on the show.

Rodney- MJ is amazing. I can’t believe the work you bloggers put into what you do.
RoHofan- We will just have to agree to disagree on David and his dad. I hope you get to meet him someday, so you can see that he is real deal.
Deirdre- that is interesting what you say about the Mormon kids you know. I live in the middle of Mormonville (Utah) and although there are a lot of great kids here and they are definitely more sheltered than many kids, there are kids of all kinds, outgoing (communicative) and rude, outgoing (communicative) and polite, etc. as well as shy and polite. I wouldn’t say there is one sterotype that totally fits. They come in all varieties, just like other people.

I heard that David A’s performance was great!! I saw the video and it was awesome!!!! About rumors that he spent his money like crazy wasn’t true, he mentioned on an interview that he doesn’t like spending or wasting his money. Mostly he spent his money on food (which I think is normal for a teenager). I also watch a video of somebody who is a good friend and knows David’s family very well that out of the $100,000 of the money David got from Starch Search was given to his church. So what we can learn from that is….David and his family is a very nice family. I don’t believe a bit that his brother stole $20 from him. Do you think that his brother had to steal $20 from him when the fact he didn’t mind to give $10,000 to his church? Does it make sense to you? It doesn’t make sense to me at all……and usually when it doesn’t make sense the story is not true!!!!!!

Good Morning to all Bloggers. Hope all of you had a very nice evening and have great plans for the weekend before Christmas.
Linda and some others gave good information on David A. Its good to know that he gave 10% of his earnings to his church. That is what the Bible teaches us, to tithe 10% of our gross earnings.
I read a report that Simon Cowell is blasting Paula for some of her comments directed at him regarding the Paula Goodspeed episode and he is whopping mad at her. The article didn’t say exactly what her comments were, but apparently, they were enough to set him off. If they are feuding, I wonder how it will effect AI, if at all. A quote about the upcoming season from Simon Cowell(k&cf will like this):
When you do the Hollywood week, which we did about a month ago, you get to see all the contestants for a second time,” he says. “My memory of that was that the guys overall — maybe five or six — were just stronger and they stood out more than the girls. I’ve said this in the past. I’ve been wrong. Somebody like a Kelly Clarkson can emerge in the middle stages, which you are not expecting. Anything can happen.”

Dierdre: The standing really does get to me. I will stay in my kitchen for about 8-10 hours at a time. But like you, when I see my hubby, kids, grands, and greatgrands, and this year my dad, eat and enjoy it, I forget about the pain and just be happy that I was able to do it. Already baked a 24 lb ham, collards in the freezer, dressing made up and ready to bake. Made 5 dozen sausage balls, 2 cheese & nut balls, shrimp dip, homemade candy mints, peanut brittle. Christmas is a big deal for me. My mother used to all this and I sorta took over.

I was at that show in Atlanta and at first the place was half empty, but about 20 minutes before David came on I looked around and it looked packed! So I think there were more people there than what was reported in the article. And David was the favorite because everytime his name was mentioned etc. the crowd went wild…..Colbie C. was awful….she is not a performer. She pranced around trying to be cutsy etc. most of the time. Half the time her band played so loud you could not hear a word she was saying….and they played a lot and she didn’t sing just called herself dancing. I would never go see her in concert. The first band was horrible REHAB…and We The Kings were O.K. but extremely loud and Gavin D. was pretty good, but David was amazing. Go to youtube and watch his performances and you will see the reaction he gets from the crowd. He actually should have been the headliner for that show. I was really surprised at Colbie though…her music on the radio is good but she is not a concert performer at all.

It surprises me how people really buy into stupid rumors, be it dad or brother. I guess that’s the reason why TMZ and National Enquiror are still in business…
David Archuleta is a great artist who is very passionate with what he’s doing. When the kid sings, you can tell he’s very very happy. I truely believe this is the beginning of greatness.
I read a lot of reports from the show from both fans and non-fans, all agree he was the highlight even they didn’t headline him. He was the crowd favorite, got the loudest scream.
It’s understandable, though, as to why they would give Gavin and the other (see I forgot the name) the pimp spots. They have been around longer while Archuleta just released his CD a month ago, a kid who is fresh off a TV show. I would say just wait and enjoy the ride!!

I saw him at one of the jingle balls and I was impressed at how confident and a better performer he has become. I saw his father there and he is also an amazing person! Too bad the public can’t stand watching a good kid succeed in life and dog him because he’s not into trashy stuff.

You can't really compare attendance at the concert last year with the attendance this year, considering this trashed economy. Perhaps more people could not afford to go to it. I would have loved to attend just to see David Archuleta if I could. Hopefully he tours on his own soon. I definitely will try to go to that. He is just awesome! Could never believe any dumb rumors about his family. Thanks for posting the video. Great job filming and I loved it. Merry Christmas to all.By virinia banker

I just can’t believe that David’s brother took any money from him. This is the first I heard that. David doseb’t normel have money on him. And he dosen’t like to spend mony if he dosen’t have to. David is very smart when it comes to that. As far a the concert went I wish I could have gone but that is not easy for me. I saw the video’s and they were awesome. From the time David was on AL. to now when he sings it looks like 3 yrs have passed. But it hasen’t even been a year. I am a golden archie and I will love and support him forever.

Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I’ve seen David in concert and he was awesome! I had to sit through 4 horrible acts in order to get to David. His voice soars throughout the arena and has a great connection to the audience. My husband went with me (poor guy, he’s a classic rocker) and he came out saying” next time let’s just go see David, you’re Archuleta boy can sing!”
BTW..Katy Perry can’t sing live if her life depended on it! uggg..grammy nominee? It was embarrassing..
I can’t wait for his solo tour!! Thanks Rodney, great article!

Lucky you to get to that concert to see David! I’d have loved to go to one, but it would have meant a plane ticket to Sacramento or further, hotel and more. I couldn’t afford it at this juncture and so close to Christmas. Drat! (His tour I won’t miss at any expense.)
I think David is the most talented singer to come down the pike in many a long year. Talent like THAT, coupled with his charisma, endearing personality, and gorgeous good looks are way past rare. He’ll be HUGE.
I’ve been a fan from the start and am in for the long haul without a doubt. I LOVE this guy like CRAZY…as my family would attest! lol

Oh Lord, it’s the attack of the overinvested David Archuleta fans. You’d think they were related to the Archuleta’s with as defensive as they get at the slightest criticism. You guys remind me of how annoying and ridiculous the Claymates were.

I was at the Jingle Jam on Wed. and David was the best performer on the show. I was surprised that there were not more people there too , but it was on a Wed. and very close to Christmas. I know that most people I spoke to were there to see David. All the other Jingle concerts this year had performers like Rhianna, Chris Brown, NeYo, Katy Perry, Jessy McCartney, Paramore, Natasha Bedinfeld in their line-up. Atlanta did not have the star power that the other concerts had.David gave one of the best performances I have seen. I hope this poor showing doesn’t keep him from coming back here for his solo tour in 2009.

It is always interesting to see different oppinions. Most people are passionate about them. Sometimes over time they change. I won’t deny that I am a huge David Archuleta fan. I just fell in love with the sound of his voice. We all have different genres that appeal to us. When Cook one I was dissappointed. I did think he was quite talented but Archie was my fav. Because of thier friendship I started to wish Cook well in all his endeours and stop the battle of the David’s I am finding it is a much healthier attitude. Concentrate on the positive.I believe David has a big following but he is still new to this business. I have spoken to many people that loved him on Idol but have no idea he has an album or was on tour with the Jingl Ball shows. He has improved drastically in his stage presence but being a beginner at this kind of performing he is still on a learning curve. He will only get better. I know it is hard to blieve for some people that somebody like him can be for real but he is. I have met him personally and can tell you “what you see is what you get”. Good luck to him, Cook, and all that are breking in to this world of music. To all of you have a very Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year.
