12/29: Top Idol stories of the year
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I meant to post this a week ago but I didn’t have access so here are my top 10 “Idol”-related stories of 2008, in no particular order. On Tuesday, I will post my top 10 personal favorite stories from dealing with the “Idols” directly.
1- The David vs. David derby. If anyone remembers season seven in particular a few years down the road, it will be known as the battle of the two Davids. David Archuleta was the cutesy, aw-shucks crooner, a favorite from day one. David Cook, while not an immediate standout, quickly proved his worth with emotive rocker creds and a sense of sincerity and authenticity. By the time we got to the top 12, those were already the top 2 and that never changed, no matter how much we liked Jason Castro’s hair or Carly Smithson’s tats. Overall, while not quite as compelling as season five, this crew was a major upgrade from season six. And both Davids are already having solid impacts on top 40 radio.
2- Jordin Sparks and who else? And just to confirm why season six was such a bust, the only one who has made a genuine impact so far is winner Jordin Sparks. We have to be proud of this 18 year old, who ended up with three top 5 hits, more than 5 million downloads and a near-million seller in a day and age when million sellers are rare. She has the charm, the grounding and the voice to carve out a decent career. Heck, even her so-called “controversy” defending the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings was kinda cute.
3- Poor Jennifer Hudson The year started out well with her: a decent role in the blockbuster film “Sex & the City,” another one in “The Secret Life of Bees” and her first full-fledged album, which was well received and garnered a decent-sized hit in “Spotlight.” But things went dark fast for her when her mom, brother and nephew were murdered in October. A fellow family member has been accused of murder. It’s just sad all the way around and overshadowed her upward career trajectory. We can only pray she can keep things going in the wake of such tragedy.
4- Clay Aiken out! In perhaps the least shocking news of all, Clay Aiken told People magazine earlier this year that he’s gay. We all knew that and the bloggers here were just glad he is able to free himself of the burden of the “secret.”
5- Paula Abdul and that stalker. Paula Abdul was her usual nutty self on the show this year. My favorite quote: “David, you are ridiculous. I wanted to squish you, squeeze your head off, and dangle you from my rear-view mirror.” But later in the year, things go weird when that stalker died near her home and Abdul complained that the show let the stalker on the show despite her complaints. (The producers said they knew nothing of the extent of the stalkers’ dealings with Abdul over many years.) She’s even talked about leaving the show when her contract is up. We’ll see. For 2009, we will still have Paula.
6-Carrie’s that all American gal The most consistently successful “Idol” alum has been Carrie Underwood. Her second album was a blockbuster in 2008 with four No. 1 hits and a streak of six in a row. She won a Grammy and a CMA. Her personal life, while occasionally chronicled in the tabs, remains relatively pristine. It’s good to be Carrie Underwood.
7-Broadway, here we come! In 2008, “Idol” alums continued to find work on Broadway or on national tours of Broadway hits. Three were on one play alone: “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” (Ruben Studdard, Frenchie Davis and Trenyce.) Clay was on “Spamalot.” Taylor Hicks was Teen Angel in “Grease” both on Broadway and on the national tour. Constantine Maroulis played a cheesy 80s rocker in “Rock of Ages.” Fantasia finished up her critically acclaimed role in “The Color Purple” in January.
8-Being a pro didn’t hurt The biggest controversy of the season seven contestants were the number of folks with prior record contracts. I personally didn’t think it mattered much but a lot of critics groused about the track records of Michael Johns (known in the past as Michael Lee), Carly Smithson (once known as Carly Hennessy) and Kristy Lee Cook all had deals with major labels at one point. Carly’s story was chronicled in a page one Wall Street Journal story many years ago. In the end, none of those three even made the top 4, though David Archuleta was a “Star Search” veteran.
9-The flops. Several “Idols” lost record deals in 2008. Ruben Studdard (off to Broadway). Taylor Hicks (Broadway, too). Katharine McPhee (at least she has her modeling and movie career to fall back on). Blake Lewis. (remember him?). Given stumbling record sales across the board, labels have little patience. So no surprises here and given that folks can release albums successful independently, this is not a big deal. (See Elliott Yamin.)
10-Changes in 2008 vs. 2009 We saw a few good changes in season seven (instruments!) and bad (mosh pit!). With producer Nigel Lythgoe out of the picture, “Idol” is making even bigger tweaks in 2009 including a fourth judge and a restructuring of the semifinal rounds (plus more emphasis on air of the Hollywood rounds.). With the show in its eighth year, it’s now a question of managing the show’s slipping ratings. I’d expect another 10 percent drop this year after 9 percent in 2008. But if the show keeps the drop to less than 5 percent, that’s a huge success.
Any other big stories in your minds that I missed?

Carol are you one of those middle aged lonely women who are obsessed with Constantine? I can’t think of any other reason you’d take a mild comment about his cheesiness and decide he needed to be defended.

Good list. Items 1-6 will probably get more discussion in the coming year. 8 and 9 will be replaced by the pros and the flops of the new seasion.
I would have re-wrote the line in question regarding Constantine to: “Cheesy Constantine Maroulis played an 80s rocker in ‘Rock of Ages.’” But that’s just me.

Excuse me, carol and hmmm. The word ‘cheesy’ was not referring to Constantine…it was describing the character Constantine plays in the musical.
But I can see where y’all would jump to the wrong conclusion. :-)

Not a superfan of Clay Aiken, but I have seen that comment many times since he decided to live freely, the comment that it was so already known. Not really, folks. Not until someone decides to say so, unless you’ve been involved personally. No offense, and not wanting to start anything, but it puts an additional burden on those that perhaps are perceived as gay who aren’t, and just because he actually was, it doesn’t excuse the stereotyping and bullying that went on before the man decided to answer a question that shouldn’t be asked. There will always be skinny, dorky, non athletic guys, who like to sing, perhaps…not all of them will be gay; but the derision directed at them will be looked over because, after all, it’s a given and “known” that they must be gay. It’s wrong, on all counts. Clay may actually be gay but the bullying and crap is uncalled for at all times. Not saying that is going on here, by any means, but the phrase “already known” is wrong…it was “assumed”, and right or wrong, it was dismissive of a person’s right to self identify.
Again, enjoy the blog, think it’s great fun, but this subject has always irked me, and the inherent dangers it can cause and the needless torment some endure because of stereotyping is a pet peeve of mine, and those that support the right of each person to publically identify in their own time, or not at all, and when/if they do, to give them full support in living a life fully equal to everyone else, including not having to endure rolling eyes and assumptions.
I’ll be back for more reading…you guys make an interesting stop off on my ‘net travels. Thanks!

Sure you aren’t a Clay fan, Yeah. Random people who aren’t obsessed with Clay always write long winded defenses of him and get hyper sensitive to perceived slights.
Clay was obviously gay. If it wasn’t obvious to you that’s your problem. Don’t expect everybody else to pretend his fake heterosexuality was anything but an eyeroll inducing joke.

Morning!
yeah…I agree with your basic premise. We shouldn’t make assumptions about anyone. However, we live in a world that chooses to believe things about people or groups of people based on little experience and even less knowledge. Being a public figure only enhances that. Clay, Lindsey Lohan, Britany Spears, etc., have all been judged based on their actions(or inactions) It comes with the territory, whether it’s right or not.
hmmm….I don’t recall that Clay EVER lived an “openly gay lifestyle”. Oh, and hmmm, don’t be embarrass by the triple post. It may make you LOOK like a fool but it happens to all of us at one time or another. :-)
Well, I guess all the blogsters are now aware that we have to wait just a little bit longer for the new format. Deep breaths everyone! Remain calm! :-)

I’m hopeful that they’ve maybe taken a good look at the complaints (a la’ mosh pit, etc) and with the change in upper management, perhaps taken the opportunity for constructive changes! guess we’ll see, eh?

hmmmm…sorry you are so apparently sad enough to be so suspicious in your life.;-) Obviously I know who Clay is..he’s pretty damned recognizable. My point of my post was not long-winded for his sake but for the sake of “others” who suffer the same garbage. I know this from personal experience…family members, friends, etc., and I participate in equal rights initiatives by both active (physically) and passive (writing) means. Because someone speaks up does not make them a strange person nor a disguised one. Sorry you can’t see beyond to help eradicate the injustices of fellow citizens being discriminated against. I can’t do that.
Dierdre, I have always felt that just because a person lives a public life for their way of earning a living it doesn’t mean their private is open to any and all discussion. Sure, I am here on a blog that follows their lives (ironic, heh) but there are areas that affect their very being and are for all intents and purposes not a part of public consumption, imo. I just never felt I needed to know someone’s most intimate life. Way too tmi.:-)
As to the rest, I wish them all luck. AI hasn’t held my attention steadily in a while so I catch up, so to speak, on You Tube, and reading stuff like Rodney’s blog. When it’s sounds interesting I check it out. Great convos and resources. It’s fun.
Sorry if I seemed a bit heavy handed. Wasn’t intended. But I’ll be back!

yeah, actually i think you’ll find that most of us agree with your premise that just because they’re public doesn’t mean we SHOULD be digging into private matters … unfortunately, the papparazzi world and the information highway have virtually eliminated privacy, even for those who are NOT trying to live “public” lives. I agree that it’s wrong … but in that agreement I have to also acknowledge reality.
Is it a shame? you bet. But chastising those who insist on delving deeper than they should only stirs the pots of controversy … sometimes it’s best, we find here (and if you’re a long time reader of Rodney’s blog, you might recognize the term) to iggit certain posts and certain post-ers, else they begin to run the blog as if it were their very own field of play!!!
please… come back and join in sometimes, you express yourself well and we … well MOST of us … love to interact with others about things AI and similar!!!
hmmmm .. you actually make yeah’s point for him/her! but here’s hoping you have a great new year and enjoy the blog and AI upcoming!!!
peace, all!

Did we ever hear how much money Clay made peddling away his privacy to People magazine? I have sympathy for those that have their privacy taken from them; I don’t have sympathy for those that sell their privacy for fame and fortune.
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,
December 29, 2008 12:16 PM | Link to this
JT you make a very valid point there. I’d not even thought that far into the subject … but truly … if you sit down for a “feature interview” with any media outlet … they you are removing the privacy issue from debate, IMHO. Good point!!!
But then… you usually do make good points. Mostly. ~¿@
However, in Clay’s defense, for a long time he just did not bow to the public’s so-called thirst for “knowledge” … perhaps he felt the rumor-mongering was getting a little out of hand in his world, or on the opposite side of the spectrum, perhaps he wanted to stir it up again for the publicity … we will never know for sure what his motive is for outing himself officially. Doesn’t really matter.
Regardless, for those who like Clay, his sexual persuasion has no bearing on their belief in his talent; for those who don’t like him, nothing will change their belief that he isn’t talented … and mostly i believe it’s the latter who continue to post diatribes about his sexuality in an attempt to somehow lessen his talent in the eyes of others. Silly, but seems to be true (that they believe it works that way).

Good Morning friends and other bloggers. I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and Santa was good to you. Mine was good, with some bittersweet moments, but I and my family got through it and dealt with the loss of my brother.
Now on to some of the comments. hmmm and yeah, you both have some valid and invalid points, and some I agree with and others I don’t, but hey, that’s what makes this blog so much fun. Opinions are always welcome, if they are made in a postive way and does not hurt anyone.
Two more weeks until season 8 premiers. WooHoo!! Hopefully, Rodney will have WP up and running, as I’m sure he will. He is great in what he does for us here, all the info and updates. We regulars really do appreciate all he does and we hope he knows just how we feel about him.
I’m suppose to be on vacation until Jan 5th, but my boss sent work home with me on 12/22, so linny, you’re not by yourself on working. Mine is just being done at home instead of the office. But you can believe I much rather be at home where I don’t have to rush and constantly be sitting at my desk. Memory just let me know she needs to go out, so I better listen.

yeah…happy to see a lurker willing to speak up every now and then! I do agree that the demand for more and more info about the private lives of celebrities is inappropriate, shallow and sometimes very disturbing.
I don’t know whether or not Clay ‘sold’ his story, or, if he did, what the money was used for. There are plenty of celebs begging for attention and enjoying the notoriety that comes with it. There are also plenty trying to keep their private lives private.
When Brangelina sold pictures of their babies to the highest bidder what were they thinking? Well…a number of things. They were aware that the paps would not leave them alone until one of them got the “first” picture of the twins. Rather than having that happen, they decided to have pictures taken, sell them, then donate the money to charity.
I see no other recourse for them. They are continually hounded by the paps and one of those vultures would have made a large fortune getting the picture at whatever cost to the babies.
While I enjoy seeing pictures of my favorite celebs out in public, I shudder when a picture shows up that was obviously taken during a private moment and unbeknownst to the celeb. Seems very slimy to me.

D -As usual, you are right on the mark. Some media/paps will NOT let a chance to snap a pix pass, no matter what they have to do. They can be really sneaky and use tactics that are at times unprofessional just so they can say “WooHoo, I got the first photos.” As we all know, that can sometimes end in tragedy, such as the cae of Princess Di. There is no doubt in my mind that had the paps not acted in the manner they did, she would still be alive today. When is enough really enough? Risking a life is not worth any amount of photos, IMHO.

Good morning fellow bloggers! I am back in the office - not enough vacation to get me past the new year. Oh well. Not going to get into that conversation, except to say that when you choose to be a public figure, you live with the repercussions of the public life. Unfortunate that it has come to the state it is now, but that is the way it is going….Earn the money, pay the price - so to speak.

Has anyone heard from Harmony? I’m anxious to know if she’s a grandmom yet. Little Asa is due in 2 days (Jan 1) and I was just wondering. I’m sure that Harm will let us know.
What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? Mine is to stay home and spend it with hubby, dad, and sleep the new year in. I will be cooking the usual new year day dinner since the kids are coming over to eat. After all the cooking I’ve done in the last two weeks, you can bet that after New Year’s day, I won’t be doing much for a while. Fast food here I come.

Hi, everyone! Just peeking in to see what’s happening—not much, apparantly—and to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I don’t think I have ever missed welcoming the new year, or since I was a child. I refuse to go to bed until I ring in the new year, no matter whether I am home watching on tv or at a party. I have not been to many of those late parties, however. Too worried about drinking and driving, and I certainly will toast the new year with more than one little toddy!
I am still off work and will be until Monday, so my blogging will continue to be sporadic. Lots going on and lots of running around to do while off. I will check back later. JT, I have thought of you quite often since all your weather and your work being closed because of it. How is it now? I think I saw where you’ve gotten some more snow, or was that just Washington?
