Perry’s “Married” is No. 1 movie at the box office
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
More than just Atlantans dig a Tyler Perry movie. His latest relationship comedy “Why Did I Get Married?” finished No. 1 at the box office in North America over the weekend, amassing an estimated $21.5 million, according to Boxofficemojo.com.
“Married” was not screened for newspaper critics and some of the earliest reviews appearing over the weekend were not entirely kind. The Detroit Free Press’s John Monaghan complained how “the film drags through its second hour.”
The Chicago Tribune’s Geoff Berkshire said flatly, “Perry’s films are review-proof and he knows it.”
“Married” did not match the opening of “Madea’s Family Reunion,” which took in a healthy $30.03 million its first weekend in February 2006. “Married’s” earnings were also slightly less than the $21.9 million pulled in by “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” its opening weekend in February 2005.
Here’s the complete list of the nation’s Top 10:
1. “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?” - $21.5 million.
2. “The Game Plan” - $11.50 million.
3. “Michael Clayton” - $11.01 million.
4. “We Own The Night” - $11 million.
5. “The Heartbreak Kid” - $7.42 million.
6. “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” - $6.18 million.
7. “The Kingdom” - $4.56 million.
8. “Across the Universe” - $4 million.
9. “Resident Evil: Extinction” - $2.65 million.
10. “The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising” - $2.15 million.

He writes the same crap over and over and the simpletons among us gobble it up. It’s a wonderul thing to have a built-in audience that clearly doesn’t know any better. He knows it and he takes full advantage of it.

I almost walked out of the movie in the first five minutes, cuz it seemed like here we go again…”bash Black women”: The pushy Black professional woman who has no time for her man; the loud, ghetto-acting, drunk Black woman, showing her bee-hind…; the ‘too fat for a plane seat’ huge woman, etc. But I stayed and enjoyed the film. My comments:
1) The acting was ‘ok’, tho’ Jill—Scott was excellent! (who knew!); 2) I still saw Janet as “Janet,” but at least she toned down her voice and sounded more adult [and wasn’t singing, thank God!]; 3) Tasha’s character was funny, but too ghetto for me; 4) JILL SCOTT was the BEST actress by far!! And, 5) I did find it “curious” that Tyler didn’t really get REALLY up close ane personal with his wife. A safe distance and superficial peck. No questions here.
BUT…the movie is MISNAMED. It didn’t have the characters explain or eshibit WHY they got married nor give the viewers enough content to leave there saying “I see why they got married, but why did we…?” It just showed 4 couples with the mess marriage can cause in all people. It didn’t really address or answer it’s own question. But I was glad there was no loud-mouth Madea, and all the Black women in this movie were shown as beautiful, articulate, dressed well, professional, etc., like most of us are. That was REFRESHING to see, and the camaraderie of couples. And dang, I am sho’nuff IN LOVE with the sheriff (Lamaan Rucker!!—FINE!)
I’m not a huge TP fan, but I applaud him for this film. I wish other Blacks in Hollywood would channel their money into establishing production houses in order to change the negative images so often and unjustly pushed on our society by white-owned media, and the likes of BET. Overall, nice job. Congrats.

I am ecstatic to see African Americans support black films. It is imperative that we do so, because we clearly do not have the support from our white counterparts nor do we need!

I thought the movie was great! It was hilarious, dealt with real marital issues and showed the reality that marriage takes a lot of work. Although it did not exceed the opening weekends of previous TP movies, no one has mentioned that “Married” was only released to 2,000 theaters as opposed to 3,000 for the other 2. That is a fact. Regardless, the movie made #1 this weekend and I am so glad that I could be apart and support Tyler on his opening weekend. Congrats Mr. Perry!!

I saw the film and was not impressed, although it brought up some interesting points of conversation for me and my girlfriend.
A)The acting was subpar… it is a sad day in movies, when Jill Scott was easily the breakout star in the movie
B) The plot was week and the characters thinly layered…. Without giving out to much of the “plot” tell me again, why did Mike think it was a good idea to bring his mistress on a vaction with him and his wife and the rest of his “coupled friends”?
Tyler is one of the premier playwrites of our generation. He writes for a specific demographic (women 22-40) and hits the same points in every script that he rights. He includes enough humor to keep the casual watcher interested, but if you have seen one TP flick you have seen them all. Which as I said before, isn’t a bad thing as it provided for very interesting convervsation with me and my girl.

I loved the movie and I am so happy to see Tyler Perry rule the box office. While I was standing in line to get my ticket I watched 3 shows sell out. The theater also added a 12:15a show as well. I really enjoyed Jill Scott’s roll and her acting. The lady that was loud was hillarious. The movie was so good I didnt even know that it was 2 hours long.
Best Part of the Movie: The Dinning Room table scene..
I will definitely go see it again. Tyler did a great JOB! .

I’m not a Tyler Perry fan, but I actually liked this movie. This is the second of his movies I’ve seen (and one play, but it was a mess), and by far this was my favorite (more than likely because Madea was in the others).
Jill Scott stole the show - she came off as a veteran actor, which surprised me, considering her limited acting experience. Janet tried hard, although the only acting role I ever liked her in was Poetic Justice (as bad as the movie was, her acting was believable). Malik Yoba wasn’t great, but he’s Malik Yoba. Tyler Perry is actually attractive without the wig, dress and makeup on, although his acting was just good (not great). Overall, an A-/B+.

I truly enjoyed watching Typler Perry’s moved. All the cast members did an excellent job. And for you “haters”, if you stopped hating so much; maybe you would be much for further along in your own life than where you are right now. Take cues from Tyler, he’s done it.

While I support “all” black cinema; I am not a die-hard Tyler Perry fan. However, I felt that this was his best movie to date. While the movie addressed some “common” issues and some - “not-so-common” issues that are found in many marriages; the storyline never seemed to live up to it’s title, “Why Did I Get Married”.
Overall the pervasive themes of love, trust and communication become the the common thread throughout the movie. I thoroughly enjoy, respect and appreciate the fact that Mr. Perry consistently produces movies (and plays) that address the issues that face black men and women, and the black family overall.

Voice of Reason : You stated that this looked like another Female bashing movie. None of the characters in this movie was flawless, so what do you mean ? The all bashed themselves by their actions, or lack thereof. We all know women just like the characters in this movie, so they do exist. The question was posed for you to answer in your own way. This movie just showed examples of how no matter what a couple looks like on the outside, there are issues going on sometimes on the inside. It was a way of just looking in the mirror. I’m just proud that a black man has the ability and power to give people jobs in this day.

I’m a TP fan and I have to say “Married” is his my favorite, by far. I’m so sick of hearing the same tired and played out comments from crabs (as in a barrel) posing as pseudo-conscious black folks. It’s entertainment. Trying to put the weight of our community’s ills on an entertainer is beyond reason. It’s not that serious. No one can disagree with the fact that TP brings “our stories” everytime. Good and bad. We are not one-dimensional and a lot of people can identify with the characters he puts on the screen. The whole experience, from waiting for the late night show because the earlier ones were sold out, to enjoying the fellowship of my fellow movie-goers - all laughing, crying and having a good time. Even though Jill still had me snottin’ leaving the theater, I felt d* good when I left. Thanks, TP, and congratulations! Can’t wait for the next one!

WELL, let me just say “I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.” It was great! Anytime my husband and I can attend a movie (that would usually be labeled as male bashing or a female movie)and we both enjoy it and talk about it afterwards GETS A THUMBS UP FROM ME! We were both able to take away something from the movie. The “shut up and let him handle it, the 80/20 rule and most importantly the no character bashing.”

I saw the movie to support TP; however, I was disappointed with the acting (with the exception of Jill Scott). In addition, no one answered the question “Why Did I Get Married”. IMHO it was “just okay” … I could have waited for it to come out on rental, saved $20 buck and enjoyed it in the comfort of my home instead of an overcrowded, VERY noisy movie theater.

Of his films, this was in opinion, his better work. I’m not a fan of Tasha Smiths overacting (most noticeable in Daddy’s Little Girls), but in this movie she was the most humorous of the bunch. Scott did do an excellent job, this being her first film role, I kept wanting her to JUST SPIT IT OUT ALREADY!! Janet actually let go a tad bit in this movie in her scene with Malik Yoba reminicing about the death of their child.
I noticed in Tyler’s movies there’s always an element of disbelief. In his last, Daddy’s Little Girls, it was Tasha Smith’s character. I’m sure there are mothers who would treat thier children in that manner, but it’s so outlandish it seems unbelievable. In this movie that element was Jill Scotts husbands brash and bold disrespect. Bringing your mistress and your wife to a vacation with your closest friends… Unbelievable!!!

To the commenter who said Tyler didn’t really get up close in personal with his wife, none of the guys got up close and personal with their wives/mistress in the movie so why aren’t you commenting on that as well instead of trying to single Tyler out with your insinuations?

BYRDIE! Actually the actions of Jill Scott’s movie husband are very believable. The mistress many times is someone right under your nose (a friend, someone you know). She’s usually the last person SOME WOMEN would expect.

This is to Byrdie:
If you don’t believe Tasha Smith’s character in Daddy’s Little Girls, then read the article on Lil Wayne in this month’s issue of Vibe magazine. His mother was much worse. Or just read the newspaper and watch your local news. Better yet, talk to a social worker, teacher, or police officer. You’ll quickly find out that Tasha Smith’s character was a sanitized version.

To attention 06,
Jill Scott has stated that she’s been acting for over 15 years, mostly on stage and that she even was offered a role in the stage play “Rent” but turned it down to do her first album. So although you may say its sad that she’s the breakout star, it does appear that she’s a seasoned actress, although you may be unfamiliar with her work.

Come on now my Brothers and Sisters, Why are we being so judgemental and harsh with our comments about this film? This was not a Hardcore serious Documentary on Marriage and Divorce, it was what I call a Dramaedy(Drama enhanced with comedy)and I thought it was a job well done, the movie was both fun and entertaining as well as hilarious. I feel Mr. Perry did an excellent job bring to the forefront some of the issues that we see in todays society among African American married couples and come on my Sister’s who among us either has as a friend or knows someone like the Tasha Scott character? and what’s wrong with that. We as black women judge each other much too harshly. Also as for the Jill Scott character that situation is real and alot of Sisters are experiencing the feeling of no longer being attractive because they have put on weight and are ridiculed on a constant basis. So I give my Kudos to Tyler for providing us with just some good fun at the movies this weekend. I usually donot go to the movies but this one caught my interest and I am glad I went.

Tyler Perry goes to the store. Tyler Perry sips water. Tyler Perry goes to the bathroom. Tyler Perry looks aout the window. Okay, enough of putting your name in front of everything you do, it’s overkill. No other film maker does this, it’s plain tacky. His ego must be monolithic.

From a Male Perspective: I think its absolutely fantastic when a brother can go to theathers with their women, friends, family, or other couples and walk away from the film with a desire to figure out how to be a better man to the women in their lives. TP movies are not for everyone, but I enjoy them because I they always give us Black Folk pause to think about or actions in our relationships and our lives. Just think about all the young brother’s in there teens and 20’s who saw this movie this weekend and the thoughts its going to put into their minds about being strong men. Good Job TP!

The movie was great! I’ve seen all the TP movies. Loved them all. This one was the funniest by far. I’m married, and it was a great comedy, that touches on some issues like infidelity, trust, and abuse. It also makes for great conversation with girlfriends and spouses. Hats off to you again Mr. Perry. I love what you do on and off the screen. You are an excellent writer. PS..All of my girlfriends who saw it loved it too.

Straight chitlin’ circuit. Tired and formulaic. We can, do and have done better. How many TP fans have even heard of August Wilson? People, can we please shoot for intelligent comedy instead of low-brow humor that reinforces and perpetuates negative stereotypes. As a Black man who loves his people, I fail to see the cultural value of TP’s work. I can’t be mad at him making his money, but I am increasingly disturbed as his work as held as a baseline for Black cinematic and cultural achievement. TP may have talent, but continue to hope that someday he will begin to use his platform to raise our colelctive consciousness. Right now, he appears to be reinforcing cultural ignorance.

The movie was absolutely wonderful! It had romance, comedy, drama, everything. Tyler Perry should be commended for stepping away from the stereotypical “Boyz in the Hood” type movies and showing that African Americans can make great movies and play well developed characters. Not to mention, his movies make money and are in a less theaters than mainstream movies starring other actors and actresses. Way to go! Can’t wait for the next film!

This film does not follow the Hollywood standard movie format or tight three act structure, but who cares. Tyler Perry Company is running things outside the Hollywood establishment.
So, I have one question to all the critics; what have you done successfully outside on a standard business monopoly, standard education system, or standard U.S. model?
In closing, I would like to thank Tyler Perry and Company for doing it their way on their terms and representing the independent film makers of the world.

Hello, hello, hello!
Before I get into this I just want you to know that this one may be a little long. (smile)
These last two weeks I have been on a promotional tour for MARRIED. 9 states, 25 private screenings, several TV and radio appearances; all in about 12 days! And let me tell you—it has taken a toll.
I have been told that since I’m not in a dress this movie wouldn’t work.
I have been called a racist (among other things) because there are no other races represented in this film (that’s not something that I ever think about…I just want to tell a good story).
I have been lied to, tricked, deceived. There was one reporter, who I was told was coming from New York to do a favorable piece. She sat in my office and smiled and asked me all kinds of questions. When the article came out it was all out of context and all about how my movies are the worst thing that have ever happened to Black people and that I am doing nothing but modern day step-and-fetch it, and that I’m just trying to get rich. I was shocked and quite upset by the trickery. Not only by her but also the things that were said about this movie in print were so awful. Several Hollywood trades didn’t even mention that MARRIED was a contender for number one. They thought that the number one would be George Clooney’s movie or Mark Walbrurg’s movie.
Now I had never ever read any of this stuff in the past, but for some reason I felt lead to read it this time. The venom and disdain for what I do was apparent. And speaking of venom, what they did to Janet was unacceptable. Janet, who was under no obligation at all to promote this movie, sat with me while I was doing a round of TV interviews. Half way through the three hours of sitting in the same spot she was attacked by a reporter on a Sacramento morning show who only wanted to talk about the Super Bowl incident.
Now, I made it perfectly clear before we went live on the air that I wasn’t talking about the Super Bowl or Janet’s family. We had less than 5 minuets so I wanted to keep it positive and focus on the movie. But he didn’t want to keep it positive. I had to maintain my composure because we were live on the air. I didn’t let her speak. I kept jumping in because it was just so unfair to her. I have not seen Justin Timberlake attacked like that. I wasn’t going to let them do that to her. Believe me when I tell you—Janet worked so hard on this film. She deserved more respect from this man than that! We both did.
In the mist of all of this I was fighting trying to get more screens because every other movie that opens with a track record like mine have not had to deal with fighting for screens. Most of the movies of my counterparts open on at least 3,000 screens. MARRIED was given 2,000. Needless to say I was exhausted and mentally drained. So, by this time it was last Thursday and I just had no more to give. So, when I started to write that email (about the movie and for you to please check your tickets and so on) all that I could think was, “Tyler don’t let these people get you down. As a matter of fact, speak a word of encouragement to the people that have been there for you and let that be that!”
Every time I’m overwhelmed by negative I just have to remember how good God has been to me. And as I was thinking about all of this all I could hear was LIVE YOUR DREAM BOY! LIVE YOUR DREAM!!
I wrote to you about dreams because I was just in a place of realizing that I had done all that I could do and the movie was in God’s hands, so I just wanted to encourage somebody. After I sent that email to you I was reading your responses on the message board and, well, you don’t know what you did for me. Here I was thinking that I was encouraging you and then you turned around and encouraged me! That’s why I thank God for you and your messages.
But little did I know how much more was to come…Jesus!!!
So, now cut to Friday…Dear GOD!!!
I decided to go to the movie and just relax. I was trying to buy tickets online so I tried the 7 o’clock show. It was sold out. I then tried the 8. It was sold out. Then the 9. It, too, was sold out! So I thought, “I need to call the theater. Maybe they’ll save me a seat since I know some of the folks that are in this movie.” (smile)
After the movie started I was brought into the back of the theater, and no sooner than I sat down I realized why I was having such a battle. I then realized why there was such an attack. As I looked at the faces of the people in this theater laughing and crying I got it. I got it! I had a feeling that this movie was special, but I didn’t know how special. I could literally see husbands and wives coming together. I could see people letting go of past hurts. And I could feel forgiveness in the air. I enjoyed watching your faces while you watched the movie. Between the tears in my eyes and the watching of your faces I didn’t get see much of the movie.
And then I got home and went to the message board and you all confirmed in words all that I was feeling in that theater. So, with all of that said I want to say to you, thank you. Thank you for crowding into those theaters. Thank for dealing with the headaches. Thank you for fighting your way across town. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for the number one movie in America.
You did that and believe me—all of the ones that I mentioned at the top of this email are shaking their heads wondering why their weapons didn’t prosper.
Truly Grateful,
Tyler Perry
P.S. I guess Judah will have to find a loving family somewhere else…. :-)

Jill Scott, I am still clapping after viewing your performacne. Who knew that your acting skills were so awesome. Hats off to the shierff, looking and acting good. I felt some type of closure with all the couples except Tyler and his wife. It was not a full 360 for me. So, you got someone else pregant with twins and it was a joke. Laugh, and walk out the door. Come on….. That should have been written better, I felt like I was wanting more to close the gap with that relationship. Finally, the ending also left us wanting more. I’m not sure if you are planning to come out with Why Did I get Married (Part 2), but my girlfriends and I wanted a final chapter after the awards dinner. We felt hangind again.
Overall, it was a great movie, as I will continue to support you. 11 of my girlfriends and i went to celebrate my birthday and it was a great addition to the celebration.
Keep doing what you do.

I saw movie on 10/13/07, at first was not sure of the plot, but after having any open mind I really enjoyed it. The one thing TP did not give was the credited that Jill Scott played. We are the big girls, do face situations as her and was very hurt and embassed that she had to get off of the plane, which is a true fact with any airline. When she had enough, she did a good thing my the only means of the 1st thing near her. Some of the plots were not that clear, but again you had to have an open mind. I realize that there are people that are not fans of TP, but he has taken something from actual events that we don’t want to face or if it is a women shaking you rear of being naked jumping up and down on stage, or these rappers, what kind of humor do you have. We all have people in our family are just like what TP plays, so don’t act like you don’t, this move is a perfect example of what married people go through to stay married, but again why go through things as this, when you are blind with love, sex, fame, money, it doesn’t work, think about it.

.While I do think Tyler can be a little over the top at times,I see nothing wrong with portarying our people in a very positive way.Boys in Da hood, and movies like that do NOT reflect all of us.Believe not or not, Some blacks actually like to see movies about Black People who are not thugs, pimps,ho’s and gangsta’s.We Like to see ourselves portrayed as smart, responsilbe and hard-working. And what the Hell is WRONG with a Happy Ending!!!!

Congratulations, Tyler!! I am so happy that your film focuses on relationships instead of guns and explosions. “Why Did I Get Married” is a film of substance and I highly recommend the movie (regardless or race or marital status). And as the haters, I’m sure Mr. Tyler’s finances will continue to expand without your support. So stop hating and appreciate a talented and innovative business man.

Dear Tyler Perry, The movie was brilliant, funny, and exciting. Now let me set everyone else straight.
I think Perry made a movie about marriage. The marriage vows states we will love each other in.. sickness-health, good times-bad times, ups-downs, etc. I beleive that every marriage will experience some part of each vow. Some may experience them more or less to different degress, but all will taste each vow…..
I beleive that Perry took four couples, and placed a magnifying glass on each of them as they were experienceing some part of their marriage vows. OH WELL!!
Perry, Cinderella is looking for you.

Tyler Perry, I agree that there is “No Weapon Formed Against You That Shall Prosper”. STOP letting these comments affect and sway you.
But dont you ever forget that “MADEA” got you to where you are today. Don’t put her in the closet and hide her. I don’t care what people say. “It was God who gave you the power to get wealth”. Don’t forget it.
Keep doing what you are doing, soon you will find your wife “the good thing”. Then you, your wife, and your 4 children can laugh at the comments and critics together. If you e-mail me, I told you I know where Cinderella is.

The movie did live up to its name. You just missed it. It wasn’t to give the answer to why they got married but make them reflect on their reasons for getting married, which it did. As a matter of fact, I would guess that many married couple did some reflecting after viewing it. Not every movie, writer, or director is everyone’s flavor. If TP don’t do it for you, that’s fine. I understand. However, there are those that actually like him as a person and his work. At least, he is doing what he wanted to do and making good money at it. Instead of being negative towards the man and others, put that energy on your dream(s).
I enjoy it and will be purchasing it to see over and over again…BTW, it won’t be the bootleg version.

I thought this was an excellent movie for Blacks. The #1 reason is that all the characters were professionals. Business Owners, Doctors, Authors. Now think, when have you seen a movie where Black people are living like this?
Sure the storyline was a little shallow, but this is a monumental film, the movie is basically saying Hollywood, you dont have to shoot a movie in LA to be successful and you can have a dramatic comedy for blacks that doesnt involve Guns/Death and Welfare.
Now one thing that concerned me, was the abscence of Black men. I saw groups of beautiful Black women 4-5 deep, but they didnt have any men with them. Black men, we need to step up our game.
Now wait until American Gangster opens next month, I guarantee you all the G’s will show up to watch Frank White kill and deal with his Anglo Queen and directed by Ridley Scott! We need to reevaluate our priorities!!!!!!
Dont blame anyone else for your demise, there is enough blame for all of us to share.

I think the movie was great, it is about time that people of color is shown in a positive light in movies. Think about it when was the last time you saw African-American professionals shown in a positive light in the movies? Actually, this is an untapped market the 40-60 year old baby boomers it is as if we do not exhist. TP did the right thing, if something it not there as Donny Deutsch says invent it. That is the American way, Spike Lee did it in the 80’s, 90’s and still does it to this day. Of course all married couples have issues that need to be addressed, all of us can relate to at least one of the characters that is what TP said from the beginning. Remember, people it is still a movie, made for entertainment purposes. No one bashed Shrek or the Transformers. Why??, it is meant to entertain. Peace

Academy-Award Winning performance Jill, and Janet Jackson you were great. The men were AWESOME!!! Tyler you are truly BLESSED with a gift from GOD to display so beautifully a story that we as the viewing audience not only can enjoy and be entertained but learn from. Great Movie! A+ in my book. The film had an great cast and everyone played their parts. The issues discussed made me think about marriage and finding a balancing between work and home and marrying a successful woman who may not be willing to give me the big family I desire. Then the infidelity on both sides and weight issues. All prominent issues in marriages. I just hope she would have had kids and that would have been the reason for the gained weight. Also, people may say Tyler Perry talks about the same things but I disagree. However, Hollywood makes the same type of movies over and over. Positive example for African Americans interested in film. Keep doing what you doing Mr. Perry and let your haters be your motivators. F* the critics!!

Tyler perry was doing plays with his own money for years and built his business up from the ground…Howw many of you can develop an idea and market it and reinvest the money you make…. MOst of you will make great money the first round and be broke by the next round.Jus t look at TI he just ruined his career and possibly his life.
At least i can say tyler Read about the people before him and learned what mistakes not to make and how to make it in the industry he is in.

Tyler- Thank you for showing the world that Black people are smart, successful, intelligent, sexy, funny, rude, loud, etc—in other words, NORMAL people.
I expected the rude, negative comments from the masses, but not from our own people. I guess you have to make another “boys in tha hood” to get any love in the black community.

I think it is Tyler’s best movie to date. I was impressed by Jill Scott’s acting ability. The Tasha character provided alot of comic relief. It was also good to see Tyler play a main role other than Madea. Serious marital issues were brought up. One of the best tear jerker scenes was Janet and Malik Yoba finally facing the death of their son. Good job, Tyler…let your haters be yo’ motivators.

HATERS, you only wish you could do half as well as Mr.Perry. How would you like someone standing over your desk every day complaining about what you’re NOT doing? I thought the film, although not Oscar’s Best Picture, was REFRESHING! Both the cinematography and cast were beautiful. His editing was better in this film. And we all had some laughs. So give HATING a rest and peaceful burial…

Well……..
I saw the movie on Friday. I’ll give it a 4, 10 being the best.
Jill Scott did an excellent job. Was not too far fetched. The fat suit wasn’t a stretch from her real size.
Janet Jackson looked soooo old up close. Time to go back under the knife Janet!!!!!
Malik Yoba looked like he was drunk as #*&$. He still had those chapped lips like in NY Undercover.
Tyler Perry (ummm stay behind the camera). You need a girdle on!!! I didn’t realize how awful your body looks until this movie. You have man BOOBS. LOL!!! You looked like a feminine MAN trying to play a REAL man. Didn’t work.
Tasha Smith, although over the top, did a good job.
Lamman Rucker was DELICIOUS looking!!
The best scene was the Dining Room scene.
I wish I had have waited to rent the movie, better yet cable.

I support Tyler Perry and will continue to support him in what he does. I saw the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed and cried.I found similarities in the characters with people I know.
To Kamau, I know August wilson, “The Piano Lesson”, “Fences” and my favorite, “Two Trains running”. He is a great lost to the literary world, but Tyler Perry is not tryin to be August Wilson. He is Tyler Perry and is good at what he does.
Kudos to Tyler Perry for keeping black actors working.

It’s amazing the amount of people who are talking about stereotypes. This movie didnt have any exageration in it nor did it make anyone look particularly bad. Do you all critize Russell Crowe, Harrison Ford or Blond girls who act stereotypically dumb. No you dont so please just stop the drama- if you dont like what he does then change the game. The question has been asked- what is he doing for our people with these movies?
This goes to the person who asked about August Wilson- you would be surprised the amount of people who know who he WAS! There are brothers (young teens etc.) who need to see college educated, family orientated, spiritual in nature Brothers doing the best they can on screen because that is the best way to grab and hold their attention.

Good Job TP. It’s about time those types of movies are shown. Something where there are no shooting scenes etc.
What everyone should do instead of criticizing, you should buy shares of Lionsgate (LGF) the company that helped TP bring it to the screen. They bring a lot of African American movies to the screen that no other company wants to touch. The cost is $10.00 a share. Hint: Sign up with www.sharebuilder.com and trade for the cost of $4.00 on Tuesday even if you purchase one share it’s worth supporting the company also and getting some of your money back instead of going and shopping.

For me when it’s all said and done, I support TP, Spike Lee and some of the others with thier independent film making/production companies because they employ our people. There are so many black people with degrees in film and cinematography that do not get the chance in “Hollywood” because of the color of their skin. When you talk about working on the set (behind the scenes) TP employs black people. He helps some realize their potential in the industry and their dreams in the business. He is helping someone make some money that can help take care of thier family. That to me is worth my support alone.

I loved the movie!!! It was a definitely refreshing change of pace from all the other films that we have to choose from. I have always loved Jill Scott from her first cd but my respect for her has hightened immensely. She played that character extremely well. Tasha Smith had me dyin’. I liked her better in this role than in Daddy’s Little Girls. Janet did a good job as well but you can definitely tell that she has aged but her performance in this movie far surpasses her other roles. All the men did a good job and were equally handsome. The dining scene was by far my favorite one of the movie.
This movie is not stereotypical, as some people have put it. It’s as real as real can get. Not everything will go perfectly and no marriage is without it’s issues and this movie proved that because every couple had skeletons, some more obvious than others.
So Tyler, great job and I’m tremendouly proud of you and this movie. You did your thing and I’m glad we finally showed up and showed out. Keep putting out positive Black film that proves that we all aren’t about cash, clothes and …well u catch my drift…

Great Movie. The Best Yet by TP!!! To the person on the blog called “BY WHAT” TP’s Audience is not as ignorant or the “simpletons” you seem to think!!
We have wised up and decided to finally support OUR OWN as “OTHER RACES” have been doing for years. Now that we are doing it, it’s a problem and you want to lable us as SIMPLETONS. HOW DARE YOU!!
I would have paid $20 a pop to see it even if it was a piece of crap!! Why????… Because it’s made for us, by us and its’ not showing our race in a negative light.
If it would have hand an abundance of PUSHER, PIMPS, HUSTLERS, AND HOOCHIE’S you would have said the movie was the Greatest thing since the sliced bread!
Thanks to TP, going away are the days of Black Bafoonery, and Black Gang Banging on the Silver Screen.
As for the critic’s they give Tyler a bad review each time and that’s because they DONT and probally ever will understand our people or our culture so they could never, ever critique movies for our people correctly!!!
With that said, Go and see this movie or any other movie of color YOURSELF to support one of our own.
STAND FOR SOMETHING…..FALL FOR NOTHING!!!
Stop listening to the critics and Stop buying bootleg!!!!!!
Gotta go, on my way to see it again!!! Be Blessed Tyler.

In today’s times, people deal with very complexed issues. This movie exemplifies exactly what married people go thru whether you are black or whatever. Yes, it was a great movie dealing with real issues and not this make believe bull…. that everybody loves to spend their money on. For those who do not like it, maybe it is because you are going thru some of the same issues, and don’t know how to fix the damn thing or you are not open minded enough to understand.

The movie was really good. For the woman’s comment earlier, The title and question was “Why Did I Get Married”. I got the answer out of the movie several times. Which was…”because of love”. TP always gets his message across very well. This movie expressed the most common marriage problems and solutions. If it didn’t hit the exact spot in yours, it definately touched on it…Good job as always TP. Also, I laughed so dang on hard, I’ve gotta see it again for the parts I missed. :)

THE MOVIE WAS GREAT - I GIVE MR. PERRY HIS KUDOS BECAUSE HE IS GIVING THE FORGOTTEN BLACK ACTRESSES AND NEWCOMERS A CHANCE TO WORK AT THEIR CRAFT. THIS IS WHY WE CAN NEVER GET ANYWHERE - WE ARE SO QUICK TO SAY WHAT HE IS DOING OVER AND OVER AGAIN - WELL LET’S LOOK AT IT THIS WAY HE IS GIVING THE FORGOTTEN AUDIENCE A CHANCE TO GO OUT EITHER ON A DATE WITH THEIR HUSBANDS, FRIENDS OR EVEN CHILDREN. THIS MAN HAS COME FROM RAGS TO RICHES AND HIS CREATIVITY CAN ONLY GROW - YET WE CAN GO AND SEE 99 SEQUELS OF OTHER MOVIES AND NEVER WRITE DISHEARTENING WORDS. IT’S LIKE MUSIC IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT DON’T LISTEN BUT STOP BEING SO CRITICAL PERSONALLY TO A BLACK MAN THAT’S TRYING … SO WHAT IF ALL OF THE ENDINGS ARE NICE - IT’S ONLY A WHAT - MOVIE . . This is a strange question, but is Tyler Perry more of a hit with black viewers from the South? My casual observation is that the experiences he captures don’t necessarily resonate as much (or at all)if you grew up in more integrated areas in the northeast or out west.
With that said, even though I personally think his movies are lacking, it’s great to see a different face of black america in mainstream media. For those of you that simply hate TP, perhaps you should offer forth your version of what you think modern black cinema should be. At least the man is doing his bit to alter perceptions.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury! Give me a break. Reading through the comments really made me appreciate my education. It was pretty sad to read through some of these, so-called “reviews” and see all the grammatical mistakes, and for lack of a better phrase, hate comments. I hope we can all appreciate the fact that TP is living his dream. We complain if there aren’t enough black films, and then we we do get a decent one, we bootleg it, and others wait for the video. If we don’t support the film in the theater, all you’ll have to choose from will be “B” rated straight-to-video movies. DUMMIES - wake up! TP is a playwright, first. And if you recall the play’s plot, you would know why the mistress was on the trip; she was invited by the wife, not the husband. TP did an excellent job with the subject matter, and the casting. I would have preferred to see some different actors play these roles that we would not typically see in dramatic roles, and maybe there would have been a different level of skill or depth that most of you seem to be looking for with this film. As previously stated by all… Jill Scott was the shining star, but Lamaan Rucker was the star of the show. His smile is worth a million bucks.

I enjoyed “Why Did I Get Married?”. It is always a great feeling to see beautiful people in a beautifully filmed movie. It was a fun movie even with some of the relationship issues/dramas. Jill Scott was excellent; the other actors also did a good job. Go see it! It has mass appeal.
