Move over, Mei Lan, here comes ‘Kung Fu Panda’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Zoo Atlanta’s pert panda Mei Lan better watch her furry back. By summer the country will be awash in marketing that touts a different black and white bear.
Dreamworks will release the animated “Kung Fu Panda” in June, starring Jack Black as the voice of a panda named Po in China of yore. He must become a formidable fighter to save his community from a vicious snow tiger.

The film’s first marketing salvo arrived on my desk Monday — a large red box contained not only a DVD of the trailer but a big, blow-up “Kung Fu Panda” punching bag.
I’ll say this — the animation on the trailer looks really good. The fighting animals (and one insect) include a monkey, a mantis, a crane, a snake and a tiger. Po’s training takes a slide because he spends a lot of time eating. It doesn’t take a genius to guess the trailer’s very recognizable song: “Kung Fu Fighting.”
Do you think you’ll check out “Kung Fu Panda”? And what’s your favorite Dreamworks animation? The “Shrek” movies? “Madagascar”? “Bee Movie”?

Gotta say tie between “The Lion King” and “Hercules”. I hear another funny line in “Hercules” each time I watch it again.

i’m not a big fan of the computerized animation. There seems to be less detail than in the old films like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.

Isn’t it funny that none of the movies mentioned in the previous comments (except Shrek) are actually Dreamworks movies? I think all of them are Disney / Pixar - not Dreamworks. Hmmm…

Favorite Dreamworks animation? The first one: Prince of Egypt. Putting aside the religious discussion, it’s a well-told story with excellent animation that nicely blends traditional work with computer-generated effects and soaring music, especially the opening sequence.
The first Shrek was clever, but the franchise has quickly gone downhill. You can only make the same joke so many times, and “so many” is usually once.

Still, the only Dreamworks films mentioned so far are Shrek (and Prince of Egypt). Everything else is Disney or Pixar (which of course is now Disney/Pixar, since disney owns Pixar). Dreamworks films are pretty much completely unmemorable in any way. And yes, I mean Shrek as well- unless you happen to be a 14 year old child who thinks fart jokes are the end-all of comedy.

Since the panda is named after his beloved Master Po, I wonder if David Carradine will make a cameo as “Grasshopper”?
