L.A. film critics prefer ‘There Will Be Blood’

I think I’m in love with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

On Sunday, the L.A. critics unveiled a strong slate of winning films for 2007, including “There Will Be Blood” as best picture. And the runner-up was another great drama: “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”

Two of the best actors of the year and, certainly, the year’s two best directors got recognition, too. Daniel Day-Lewis won the well-deserved best actor award (runner-up was Frank Langella for “Starting Out in the Evening.”). For best director the group named Paul Thomas Anderson for “There Will Be Blood” (the runner-up was Julian Schnabel for “Diving Bell.”).

The one problem: the L.A. critics failed to recognize Casey Affleck for his tremendous supporting performance in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.”

I am particularly stoked about this year’s awards season because particularly strong dramas are getting recognized. On Sunday, the Boston Film Critics named “No Country For Old Men” best picture, as did the National Board of Review last week.

Here are the major award winners from the L.A. film critics:
