SAG nominees: Clooney, Christie, Affleck, ‘No Country’ and ‘Into the Wild’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If I was a betting man, which sometimes I am, I’d say these are the likely shoo-ins for Oscar nominations next month: George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Casey Affleck, Amy Ryan and Javier Bardem.
Partly, it’s because all have just been named Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees.
The biggest name who got left out of the SAG’s individual nominations: Denzel Washington. “Atonement,” “Charlie Wilson’s War” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” which were the big scorers in Golden Globe nominations, was completely bypassed.
Among the pleasant surprises: Ruby Dee nabbed a supporting nomination for “American Gangster” and Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild” captured four nominations, including acting nods for Emile Hirsch, Hal Holbrook and Catherine Keener.
Here are the SAGs movie nominees (awards will be handed out Jan. 27 on TBS and TNT):
Best male actor: George Clooney (“Michael Clayton”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“There Will Be Blood”), Ryan Gosling (“Lars and the Real Girl”), Emile Hirsch (“Into the Wild”) and Viggo Mortensen (“Eastern Promises”).
Best female actress: Cate Blanchett (“Elizabeth: The Golden Age”), Julie Christie (“Away From Her”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie En Rose”), Angelina Jolie (“A Mighty Heart”) and Ellen Page (“Juno”).
Best supporting male: Casey Affleck (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”), Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”), Hal Holbrook (“Into the Wild”), Tommy Lee Jones (“No Country for Old Men”) and Tom Wilkinson (“Michael Clayton”).
Best supporting female: Cate Blanchett (“I’m Not There”), Ruby Dee (“American Gangster”), Catherine Keener (“Into the Wild”), Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone”) and Tilda Swinton (“Michael Clayton”).
Best ensemble: “3:10 to Yuma,” “American Gangster,” “Hairspray,” “Into the Wild” and “No Country for Old Men.”

Kevin, could you die already? That was a rude thing to say.

Still laughing here at how Mr. Madonna took his little row boat and shotgun (and the press) to New Orleans after Katrina to do the job Bush failed to do, save New Orleans. He shot a hole in the boat and a resuce team had to take time off from recuing real victims to bail this total idiot out. Kevin, we missed out chance to see him blow himself away on national television, dammit…but alas, better luck next storm. Hopefully he’ll take the other Hollywoods freaks like Susan-Shank-Sranadon with him and they’ll be fish food. Merry Christmas !

I agree with Kevin. It would be a nice holiday gift if Sean would just die.

Wasn’t into the wild about another hippy wannabe going back to nature in the alaskan wilderness and flippin starvin to death? Oh yeah he was a real HERO. Sean Penn is an idiot.

I thought Into the Wild was really well done. That said, count me on the “Die, Sean Penn, die” bandwagon.
