Can the Globes survive without movie stars and booze?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Is it still a Golden Globes party if there are no movie stars and, worse, no booze?
The traditional, annual starshine parade of overpaid luminaries that underscores what Hollywood is really all about has been scrapped due to the writers’ strike and will be turned into a shorter news conference on Sunday where winners names will be read from a list.
Like the public wants to gawk at members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reading names of stars who aren’t there?
The problem here is that producers and the studios aren’t willing to adequately compensate writers in new forms of entertainment — like the Internet. And as the strike continues, it seems obvious that writers would take aim at the glitziest of award shows, the better to gain public attention with a noisy picket line outside the event.
What appears now is that the Globes as we know it will not happen this year. The studios are rapidly calling off their after-parties and if the event begins to appear like it’s anything more than a news conference, the Writers Guild appears pledged to picket.
What’s next? Clearly, the Oscar folks need to watch their backs.
Will you miss a star-studded Globes? The red carpet? Will you care if the Oscars are eventually affected?

I wouldn’t care if they never showed an awards show like the ones we’ve been forced to see/hear/read about ever again…………it’s just a parade of folks, showing off usually. Who cares? None of this affects the world in a positive way or does anything for the less fortunate. Good riddance to all of them, and hopefully it will affect ALL of them!!

I don’t watch award shows much anymore, so won’t miss them if they go now or even after the strike is over.

I will absolutely not miss the Golden Globe event!!! I could really care less what they win, why they win, or what they wear. I hope they never have it again. “Real people” do not care about this stuff. Hope it nevers comes on again.

The solution to the Writers Strike is simple. Give the writers until 8 a.m. tomorrow to report to work. If they don’t, they should fire them and ban them for life from working in the industry. By striking, the writers are stating clearly and unequivocally that they don’t want to work. Replace them with people who do want the jobs. Force the union and its members to immediately pay every dime the networks and the studios have lost due to employees refusing and being unwilling to do the job they took knowing the pay, benefits and conditions involved. The writing can’t get any worse.

I don’t watch any awards shows so I will not miss the Golden Globes. I don’t know what is worse, the “red carpet” show with all the fake hair, boobs and smiles, the actual award show with all the fake acceptance speeches that turn political, or the Entertainment shows the next night showing all the fakeness again and again.
I’m very surprised the actors would give up the opportunity to spew their political views at the public especially since it’s election time.
I get sick of actors and musicians thinking they are so important and have so much influence over the general public. I don’t care what ANY of them think about ANYTHING. And nothing they say would ever influence me.

What a laugh these self-congratulatory awards shows are anyway. “Look at me, I’m important because I can pretend to be someone else on stage - now give me a trophy”. What values we have as a nation to elevate these clowns above the real stars of our country - our boys and girls in uniform.

Yawn. Who really cares anymore? Once was the time the studios owned the actors and controlled their ever move so they wouldn’t self destruct in the public eye. Now we know too much about them. We know that Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan are drug addicted s**. We know Paris Hilton is too stupid to be able to count past ten. We know that the little pigmey Tom Cruise is so weird no one can stomach to see him on film anymore and that he cannot have kids and he gets the sperm for his ‘kids’ from Scientology donors. We know far too much about the Hollywood types that we are caught up in one big collective yawn. Who cares? We know Brad Pitt and his freako girlfriend go out of their way to adopt non-white kids (only) and use their star power to help only those that garner them the most press. Have you seen either of them in West Virginia helping out the kids of poor miners? No. That won’t sell as well. Personally I have avoided movies for two years. I cannot give my money to people I cannot identify with on any common ground. I do not understand those of you so infatuated with these types, your lives must be so banal and empty to look to these people as ‘stars’. Look at the press some fat trainwreck like Anna Nicole Smith garnered whe she overdosed. Duh…the look of surprise on my face when that one croaked. Now, if Britney would only follow suit….

Well obviously someone is watching this mess (not me!), or the ratings wouldn’t be high enough to keep them on!!!

I haven’t watched a complete award show since the late 80’s. They simply hold no value to most folks like myself, in my opinion. An entire industry built on pomp and a cult of celebrity congratulating itself, isn’t really something I need nor want to waste my time with. Let ‘E’ and ‘Entertainment Tonight’ cover the scheduled ‘News Conference’ so at least I’ll know which channels to avoid.

Since the writers are striking for what amounts to a 4-cent raise on DVDs and the right to see royalties from episodes that are already being shown online WITH ADVERTISING (that can’t be fast-forwarded through), and the AMPTP are the ones that walked away from the table, not the other way around, I say Hollywood is learning the hard way that the Old Days are gone. Bear in mind that AMPTP keeps telling the writers that concepts such as DVDs, the Internet and Cable Television are “New Media” and “unproven” sources of income. HA! As it is, with Letterman & UA cutting their own deals with the WGA, it’s only a matter before the rest of the studios break rank and the WGA gets what it wants, and everyone gets their ego strokes at the Oscars.

It really doesn’t matter. It is just a chance for every star to gloat on each other. I usually watch to see how badly dressed the stars are.
I guess the Oscars and Grammys will be next if the Writers stay on strike. Writers, get your due, like every one else!!!

I watch the awards every year. I think this whole thing is ridiculous. Nobody should receive an award if there is no award show, skip it - see how much money you save and give it to the writers on strike. It doesn’t take rocket science to know actors & producers can’t do anything without the brains of the writers behind the scripts.

Popular culture, awards shows, the red carpet, and movies are great fun. I’ll miss the entertainment of the Golden Globes. Lighten up people, it is ok to relax and enjoy some couch time with light tv.
