Should most movie theaters serve beer and wine?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I guess it’s out of habit, knowing that most movie theaters do not serve beer and wine, that I don’t even think about the inability to order a drink while watching a film.
Still, it’s kind of surprising that management at Landmark’s Midtown Art Theater — one of the few places in metro Atlanta that does, or, rather, did, sell alcohol — accidentally allowed its license to lapse.
I have ordered and enjoyed a beer at the Buckhead Backlot. And, though it has nothing to do with movie theaters, I can guarantee you that I ordered wine to get me through visits to Chuck E. Cheese’s when my once-wee sons, D.W. and Cecil B., were indeed wee.
Maybe the megaplexes avoid it because Hollywood’s main output is aimed directly at older teen males and crowds are often so young. Then again, the parental factor could kick in. As in: if I had wee ones and was watching “Alvin and the Chipmunks” I know for a fact I’d need a beer.
Do you think most movie theaters should start selling beer and wine along with popcorn and hot dogs?

I would love to have a beer and/or wine at a movie. However, I don’t see it happening in Georgia anytime soon. The license fees are extremely high, and policing it would be impossible. I would think that the theaters would rather make a 95+% profit off a soft drink than have to charge $10 or more for a small glass of Thunderbird. I just smuggle it in like I usually do.

When movie theaters begin catering to the needs of drunkards is the day I stop going. And, yes, if you ever “need a beer,” then you are a weak & pathetic individual.

By The God… you are just another example of why people need a drink. Got your Bible handy? You are gonna need it! I don’t care if movie theatres sell beer/wine, why do you? That’s like saying, I don’t like seafood therefore no one else should eat it. Selfish!

I used to live in Atlanta, and went to a movie theater that served beer, wine and food. Bar food, albeit, but something other than overpriced popcorn and candy. That was in the early 90s. I believe it was called Tocoa Hills, near Buckhead. It was a nice break from tradition. Anyway, I live in Warner Robins, and last week, the Macon Telegraph came out with a story saying that a new movie theater opening at Colonial Mall Macon will be serving alcohol. That will be nice if it’s done right.

No - popcorn and a soda are just fine.
The only way I think beer and wine should be served is if it were a ‘Dinner and a Movie’ type of theatre.
Went to one in Florida a few times. It was catered to adults - no kid flicks - mainly older movies and light ‘finger food’ type dinners, along with the beer and wine. They even policed how much you drank. You had to show your ticket when purchasing alcohol, they stamped your ticket, and there was a two drink maximum. Great concept. Wish there were one around here.

Hey, “The God,” drunk people don’t need to be catered to by any industry. Why do you think flasks sell so well?

I like the “Dinner and a Movie” Idea for adults. As for the mainstream (movie) theatres, I say no. If I want a sip during the movie, I take my own (already mixed in my Minute Maid juice bottle, nice and discreet). ^SP!

I don’t see a problem with that, as long as it’s kept to a minimum & folks aren’t using the movies as a bar/place to get sloppy drunk then why not?
If this would make some theaters more “adult” and stop people from bringing their crying babies to the movies then that works for me too.
But just know that whether this is legalized or not, most people who really want to drink during a movie will continue to smuggle it in. Either way, you aren’t hurting those who wish to have a beer or wine during a movie.

We love going to Buckhead Backlot and enjoying a beverage and snacks while we watch a movie. Plus, it is generally a better behaved crowd. It is not close by but well worth the drive!

If I order beer at a movie, I would probably find myself missing a lot of the movie, as I would be having to take bathroom breaks.

I grew up in Atlanta (miss it a lot most times), but now live in South Florida. My local Muvico theater has a seperate balcony area in several theaters where folks can enjoy full meals and a full bar (Houston’s type fare)while watching a movie. I enjoy it whenever I can and it is quite popular here. Don’t see why the same concept couldn’t work realistically in my hometown.
And yes…when I was younger (yet of age) I smuggled in my share of adult beverages into the movies in Atlanta!

As if dimwits and those suffering from social retardation with cellphones and blackberries are not enough, let us interject more stupidity into your night out at the movies. Stupid…stupid idea.

I’ve been to a number of movie theatres where alcohol was served and never have I observed anyone getting “sloppy drunk”.
Most people, despite what frat movies and hysterical preachers would have you believe, don’t drink to get sloshed.

Wow! I see how quickly the idiots can come out from under the cracked baseboard. I believe the question was “Do you think movie theaters should sell beer and wine”, not “The alcoholics need a place to get drunk and watch movies, too”. How quick were you to reply that people who drink need to be catered to? I can get my own beer just fine, thank you very much. I think it is a great idea. Maybe they can also have peanuts and pretzels added to the concession stand as well???

Remember the Cinema Drafthouse in Buckhead and on Druid Hills? I thought it was a fantastic idea!

Let’s compromise. Keep the beer and wine out of the G and PG movies and keep the babies and unchaperoned whiny kids out of the R and X rated movies. Of course, this would mean that theaters would have to demand ID’s before serving alcohol and not let parents buy tickets for a group of underage kids and abandon then when they are in the theater. How much would the ticket cost increase to pay for the extra workers?

There used to be this movie theater in Statesboro, GA that sold beer at “Mugs and Movies.” Ahh the good ‘ol days. Go figure that Bulloch county would allow such a thing went you have to drive to Candler County to get a bottle of liquor!

You mean you’ve never BYO to a movie theatre?? Nothing better than stopping to pick up a couple little “airplane bottles” of rum for a nice Rum and Coke. Notice I said a a couple. Nothing drunkard about this, so relax and enjoy…

The town that I grew up in had a Movie Theater that served Food, Wine, Beer, & Mixed Drinks. It was wonderful! They even allowed smoking in the theater, which I thought was great at the time since I smoked.
But that’s beside the point. Going to the movies and enjoying a daiquiri, or beer is very nice. I say allow it!

If it would lower the cost at the concession overall ($10 for small popcorn and soda—WTH!) then I say lets do it.
Yes, if I have to sit through Enchanted or Alvin (again) a beer would be nice….fortunately I will not see those again until I am home w/DVD….so a beverage should be a nonissue.

When I used to live in Chicago we would frequent a movie theater that served beer. It was a blast. Had to be off age to get in. People didn’t get disorderly. If done right, I think it’s a fine idea.

Give your livers a break. I don’t think it’s asking too much to go for two hours without a drink. I can’t imagine what physical shape some of you people are in !! Ewwwww, someone has to see you all naked. UGH !!!

Nice to see some sense from some of my fellow citizens. The ones that would like a brew with their film, that is. (Kudos to MamaS for her post. Sensible, very sensible, that suggestion.) To the others, well, a beer or drink, or two, with or without a movie does not a drunkard make.
When my friends and I were much younger we spent many an enjoyable evening at the Excelsior Mill on North Avenue (The Masquerade was its next incarnation) watching movies, sharing pitchers of Heineken Dark, and eating those delicious pizza-dough pretzels. Never a fight nor a sloppy mouthy drunk did we suffer through.

Hey Font1 I now live in Warner Robins and grew up near toco hills we would always go to the theater there. Its was nice to get out with friends and chill and have a drink without going to a bar with people hitting on you. Most of these theaters only show movies for grown ups. There is the Capital Theater in Macon on Cherry street that does it. Its great.

I stop at the liquor store and pick up some “nips” (tiny bottles) to mix with my slurpee when we get there.

That’s a great idea. The Cinema Drafthouse on Druid Hills was very nice and I now go to Buckhead Backlot when I want that same type of atmosphere. Problem is, we only have one of those spots. We need more around the city.

First I want to say to The god. How dare you capitalize god.
If I can get free wine at church why shouldn’t I get it at a cost at a theater? That is why I watch my movies at home.

I am tired of people assuming if you want to have a beer or wine with a movie you are drunkard. We didn’t say to get blasted. Just a drink or two. It is hard for a simple-minded person to tell the difference between a glass or two and getting smashed. These are probably the same Puritan people who tell that alcohol is evil and the devil and then their kids go out and get smashed to rebel. They would probably be more responsible if you treated alcohol responsibly and drank in moderation and didn’t proclaim it to be evil unless you overdo it.

Buckhead Cinema and Drafthouse was great! Didn’t they have one in North Springs too? And remember, a movie is usually 2 hours. Kinda hard to go overboard in that amount of time.
