March to be big month for Tyler Perry
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just about every month something big is happening with Tyler Perry. But March will be more notable than usual.
This weekend the Atlanta entertainment mogul will begin production of his next big-screen comedy, “The Family That Preys” at Tyler Perry Studios and other Atlanta locations.
On March 11, Perry will be the cover image for Best Life magazine’s April issue. And on March 21, he will release the big-screen version of his comedy stage play “Meet the Browns” in theaters nationwide.
After production of “The Family That Preys” officially begins Sunday, Perry’s Family Productions on Monday will begin shooting scenes in a southeast Atlanta home. Residents in the area received notice of the filming earlier this week.
“Preys,” about two families, stars Oscar winner Kathy Bates, Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard, Sanaa Lathan, Taraji Henson and Rockmond Dunbar. Perry co-stars and directs.
The film is tentatively scheduled to debut in theaters in September.
In Best Life, Perry talks about his rise in the entertainment industry, from originally living in his car to running a $500 million enterprise.
Billboards are already up in Atlanta to promote “Meet the Browns,” which stars Angela Bassett, Irma P. Hall and Perry as Madea and Uncle Joe. Rated PG-13, it was filmed in Chicago and Atlanta.

It is such a blessing to see Mr. Perry’s testimony as it’s being written. He has shown the African Americans and the world you can fall to your lowest point and God will take everything and turn it around for your good. Thank you Mr. Perry for sharing your testimony with the world. Keep letting God use you to “go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” through your plays, movies, tv shows, talk show, website, etc.

Great job Mr. Perry. I’ve watched most of your plays/movies and they made me smile and laugh and forget my troubles for a time. Some say your plays/movies are ‘raunchy’ and ‘over the top’ what I saw was an array of folks from different walks of life. Some doing the ‘right thing’ some not. And those wise enough to know right from wrong trying to point those who need help in the right direction.

Here we go again. Can Tyler Perry please do ANYTHING ELSE other than those negro minstrel comedies? I am so irrated with the same kind of old tired material over and over again. Tyler has the power to make and produce films, not many black people have this kind of ability.
Not all black people want to grin and jin about life. There are alot of us that can appreciate diversity in films, like dramas, thrillers or even science fiction and even enjoy seeing a diversity in a mixed group of cast members. Wake up Tyler, this is 2008 not 1908. The time of grinning and mooning eyed negroes is over.

WELL By James, there are DIFFERENT types of filmmakers and if TYLER PERRY is fine with the PATH that HE has CHOSEN ( not YOU) then why WORRY yourself about it. MY advice to YOU is…if YOU don’t like the types of MOVIES that MR.TYLER chooses to make, YOU have the CHOICE (operative word being choice) NOT to view them. BUT for those of US who LIKE (and there are a PLETHORA of US ) MR. PERRY’S movies, we WILL continue to SUPPORT him. Wether YOU like it or NOT! KUDOS to you Tyler Perry! …AND Mr. Perry if you happen to read the AJC and see this, I PERSONALLY want to THANK YOU! I enjoy EVERYTHING that you do.Keep up the GOOD, POSITIVE, INSPIRATIONAL work! The “MADEA-nation” LOVES U :-) ~GOD BLESS~

James It’s like asking Stephen Speilberg to quit making fantasy movies.
I personally love “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” (This coming from a middle aged white woman). I watched it this weekend, and could watch it over and over and over……..

Tyler Perry>>> I do not car what anyone has to say, GOD has blessed him with a talent that is amazing. So many directors and filmmakers make the same type of movies, with the same type of actors, but when TP does it, it’s a sin or itsa lack of diversity. Imagine that!

James God gave us all the power of choice. If you don’t like it you don’t have to watch or support it. God gave Mr. Perry a vision to do what he does in the way that he does in order to reach people that might not otherwise be reached. There are not that many movies, plays or tv shows with predominately African American casts. Mr. Perry is opening doors for actors that would not have been given an opportunity. It’s not some “grinning and mooning” as you put it. It’s opening doors, spreding a God given message and changing lives for the better. I’m proud of Mr. Perry and support him every chance I get. Thank you Mr. Perry. You’ve made a difference in my life. You’ve shown me that anything is possible.

james are you kidding me. Be supportive not negative. What do you want to see from tyler perry besides negro movies. Oh i get it you want him to forget where he came from now that he is popular even though thats what got him started. James are you a proud black american. Tyler Perry keep doing your thang baby and for the record he is diverse Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Why did I Get Married are totally different. I applaud him for the light he sheds on black americans.

If that is what the Lord has laid on your heart to do, then by all means do it and continue to do it well. I applaud your efforts. I only wish I could be a part of any of your productions. God Bless.

To Kristy and others, it is not the point of not being a proud african american. It is a fact that Tyler has the capacity to direct, and make all kinds of films, that he can make a BIG difference, and to show he has the ability to NOT be a steriotype only comedy making filmmaker. To show that he can be diverse. To mix it up sometimes, some comedies, some dramas, some thrillers, some science fiction. It is that his films are ALWAYS THE SAME STYLE. What is wrong with diversity even in black movies? Too many of our movies are ALWAYS comedies and many of our great actors in them are typed cast, to never escape this, or to be some kind of side kick in predominately white cast films. It is just irrating to see most of the OUR films on the big screen, as a bunch of knee slapping, heckling and jeckling, grinning and jinning blacks ALL THE TIME.
It is Hollywood that looks at at us as mostly coons and bafoonery, and Hollywood that gives out the checks to only fund these comedy films for us, only looking for a quick way to make a fast buck. It is bad enough to laugh at ourselves, but even worse enough to be laughed about from others, and not be taken seriously by the masses. And that we as black people can’t see the difference. It puzzles me to try to understand why we as black people always accept films about comedies, gangster thugs or baby mama drama, so easily as a standard for black films? You may not want to accept or believe this, but We as a people are viewed and look upon, by what WE accept. And you wonder why WE do not get the respect that WE deserve? Especially by other cultures.
For every major black film that comes out, you can bet 95% of them will be a comedy, look at the statistics. What kind of message is that sending, is it that we are so shallow or only mentally able to relate to comedies, or that we are not intelligent enough to want diversity in black films? Next time when everyone gets a chance, check out the movie, “BAMBOOZLED” by Spike Lee. You will see what I am taking about.
And for ANY of the films that have a black star(s) doing any serious film content, you can bet, they are mostly done by white producers white writers, white directors, and white film funders.

Woooow, James!
Have you seen any Tyler Perry films? His films are not the “typical” black films they have progressively matured but always told a accurate and rarely deplicted social section of African-American life.
They are young black professionals; lawyers, doctors, independent business owners; living and loving in a way not seen or even realized by mainstream white america.
His films speak to the current state of black america, disrespectful youth, unrealistic relationships, broken men and women looking for a connection not grounded in GOD. There is no “shuckin and jivin”, no knee slappin, no bending and scrapin for a laugh.
Tyler Perry is a story teller, his movies ARE Dramas, with a injection of humor, spirituality, and mystery. Gone are the days of the “Mystery of Black America”; Tyler Perry is putting it out there like never before, he has made it his mission to show the rest fo the world that we(African-American’s) want the same thing as everyone else. We want to be in commited monogamous relationships, we want to raise our children to go to school and be successful members of society, we are not afraid to work hard for what we want and we cherish our families.
We are not the one dimentional stereotypical individuals force feed to the general population through the media outlets.
James, you need to have a TP movie marathon and relax, relate and release some of your inner frustrations.

Begin a black woman I am very proud that Mr. Perry has found such success after such humble beginnings. But him making the same picture over and over again, is a little hard to take. They are not funny and have lost all entertainment value, period. He will never be a Spike Lee, John Singleton, or Antonio Fuqua. He does not take any risk at all, he keep taking the same old premise and try to make us think it’s something new. A black man in drag is only good for one show. If he has any talent at all, do something that’s meaningful.
