Excerpts from Tyler Perry’s mag cover story
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta’s entertainment giant Tyler Perry looms large on the cover of Best Life magazine’s April issue (due on newsstands Tuesday).
Here are a few tidbits from Perry’s seven-page spread:
On working with film studio Lionsgate: “They leave me alone. They don’t send me notes. They just say, ‘When’s the film going to be done?”
What’s around the corner: A new 30-acre production facility near Greenbriar Mall that will be a back lot with five soundstages. And he eventually plans to start his own cable network. “I thought it was part of my five-year plan, but it’s a lot closer.”
His advice for business leaders: “To be a good boss, know how to do the grunt work. There’s nothing that I don’t do. I can hang the lights, I can do the makeup, I’m a great carpenter, I can unload the truck. You need to know what the janitor does, the cameramen — you need to know it all.”
On critics who attack his work: “It doesn’t bother me. There’s a clear division in this country. Either you get it and understand the purpose of it or you don’t. The intent of the whole thing is to make someone feel better.”
Bad memories from childhood: Best Life mentions Perry’s early poverty, abuse from his father, molestation by a neighbor, depression and two suicide attempts. “I was the object of my father’s disaffection. With black people, sometimes there’s this light-skin/dark-skin thing. And my older sister is light skinned, so immediately she was his favorite. She looks like him. My other sister and I are darker, and we saw a whole other side of it.” He says his family has reconciled to a fragile cordiality.
On his love for his character Madea: “First, a woman can say things a man can’t. Second, a woman at that age doesn’t care about being politically correct. So she’s a great catalyst for me to speak to a lot of people about love and forgiveness and redemption and faith.”
On building the Tyler Perry brand: “When I started doing plays, there were a million shows out and a lot were really bad. I had to have something to set mine apart. So I would make sure my name was on the tickets and the marquee. I wanted people who had never heard of me to become familiar with this name. When I went into film, I wanted to do the same thing. It’s not that I’m narcissistic — I’m very aware of brand building. When you see that name, it gives you a good feeling, like Coke or Disney or Oprah/Harpo.”
On knowing his audience: “I know them. We have a one-on-one great relationship. When you have the support of black women, they are with you, even if they have to walk through snow 100 miles.”

I can say that Tyler Perry’s life has truly been an inspiration to me in my film career. Especially the part about how he overcame struggles by trusting in the Lord.
Also, he was able to do the work needed to make his dream come to fruition. Thanks Tyler!

I am not defending G’s comment; however, celebrities understand the price of fame: being under total scruntity. People are interested in all facets of a celebrity’s life, to include his or her sexuality. However, a person’s negative or positive view of another is dependence upon that person’s personal or worldview, which in and of itself does not add or substact anything from Tyler’s perception of his self-worth or image.

I have always wondered why the so-called public thinks it is their right to know every little detail of someone else’s life! Any person’s sexual makeup is none of my business or anyone else’s as far as I can see! And I think we all forget that God is the judge of all things!

doristhomas said,”TRUE BLACK MAN.” Ladies, this is a true example of a DL man. If he were 100% true and this is not to say he is not true to his craft because he certainly is. However, one must be true to themselves and what it is they represent completely and not put on an aire that is untrue. I know this for a fact, and I am not rich, nor am I a celebrity, but I do and have been in the company of such that live the alternate lifestyle and Mr. Perry was there. Just because you arrive at a grand plateau in life, you should never forget who you REALLY are. If people are going to love you, they will do so by accepting you for who you are. If a person cannot admit to themselves and others who they REALLY are now what does that say about that individual? I absolutely enjoy Tyler’s work and I think that God has been good to him. So, have the faith that God would shield you with his armour and come on out. You have made it so who cares what they think anyway? Be true to thine own self. So again ladies, DO NOT BE FOOLED. And yes, I am gay. Just like some people we know, you would NEVER, EVER be able to figure it out unless WE wanted you to know. Thing is, you ladies do not have to worry about that with me because the ladies are just not my preference. I hope that Mr. Perry will bring jobs to the unemployed when he builds his HUGE studio. I will continue to support you Tyler because because I was able to MEET the real Tyler and HE is a fun, personable guy.

I agreed with people’s opinion regarding not judging other. But let’s say someone wrote in a comment that some believed to be negative or judgemental, and other responded by with negative or condeming remarks. Are not both guilty of being judgemental? God gave us freewill: the abilty to make independent choices. And he also gave us intellect: the ability to reason. Therefore, if one question a particular part of a person does not mean that he or she is rejecting the whole person.

Tyler, Keep doing what you are doing. Obviously you are doing something right because the checks keep coming. And I sure can relate to the dark/light skin thing. There is more racism amongst ourselves than from the outside. I am a dark woman married to an extremely light man w/2 kids smack in the middle. People actually stare at B and I when we are out. Personally, I do not think his sexuality is an issue; however, as stated in another comment, people are interested in famous people lives. And because they are news worthy, people will form their own opinions; therefore, why would anyone be upset if a person states their limited or broad focus on his life. My point, it is what it is: someone’s opinion. There again, as broad or limited as it may seen, it is their opinion. And that is what a blog is all about.

In response to “Just Asking”, thank you so much for your shared wisdom. Allow me to confess my judgemental error in attacking the other person with their question and comment. God is more than able to defend all whom He created and needs no help from me. I deeply apologize for any offense I have caused anyone with my rash outbursts. Please forgive me. May God forgive all our sins. If Tyler Perry had DL/Gay encounters in the past, but has confessed before God and those who knew about it, now it is in the past and forgotten. Let us not dwell on the past, but look to the positive future and forgive one another and ourselves. Remember, if you look for trouble you will find it.

baldtexan……………………Just because you believe he’s gay doesn’t make him gay. And if he is gay, why is it important for him to “come on out” as you say? Who the hell are you? And for the record I’m gay as well and It’s comments like yours that makes some men want to keep thier business private. It amazes me how some gay men can discriminate against others for not telling the world about their sexual orientation. It’s none of your business if he comes out or stays in. How does it benefit you or the rest of Gay America if he discloses his sexual preference?

If he is gay he need to be true to himself and his fans. Dont live a lie and try to keep covering your sexuality up. If he’s gay than be GAY. It does make a difference to FANS, cause that would mean that he has been living a lie all these years lying saying that he is not.

That same rule of thought is still relevant in the Black community today. Other races have picked up on it too. In house of payne he shows the lighter skinned CJ & Jenean all messed up and the darker Paynes doing well but yet helping them as much as he can to get on their feet. I don’t think it would be so kind hearted and generous if the skin tones were reversed. They probably could not come to their homes or dealt with Period.

If I remember scriptures correctly, Jesus commune with prostitutes, wine bibbers and societal outcasts. His disciples: Peter (a profounded cursor and needed anger management), Matthew (tax collector, despite for oppressing the poor), Judas (spirit of greed and deceit). Also, Jesus showed compassion to the adulterous woman. Also it the Old Testment God used Moses (murderer), Noah (drunkard), Rahab (prostitute), David (murderer) and so forth. Is it possible that the God who is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow can still use inperfect humans today?

Tyler I love your plays and movies. You are truly an inspiration. I am always reminded when I see any of your work of the scripture that reads, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Many blessings to you in all you do. We must always be reminded of our creator and how we got over. May GOD continue to bless you and your family. I am one of your Number 1 fans. The story you shared about the lady who was homeless and only wanted a pair shoes was truly a blessing to me. It reminded me of how much we take for granted. Thanks for being such a wonderful, wonderful person and of never, ever forgetting our Maker.

The Movie Why Did I Get Married was such an inspiration to me, partly because I was living it. The only difference is I wasn’t actually married, but being friends with someone and have them betray you opens up a whole new prospective about life and how we deal with people. Thanks for being a true inspiration even through film.

Gay - Who Cares? Perry is talented. Each of us have issues that we must deal with, leave him alone. Enjoy his work, anyone who can make us laugh, well God Bless Them! Everyone wants to be “mad” about this or that, life is too short for such nonsense. Here today, gone tomorrow — don’t waste your time judging, and picking others to pieces. I have relatives and friends who are Gay, Alcoholics’, Will Not Work, Use/Used Drugs, Mental Health problems —and the list goes on, I still love them. Try to be tolerant as GOD is tolerant with us ALL! Love & Peace

Tyler,I love your work…I love your movies and stage plays. And after reading a small segment about your life experiences, it really makes your strength amazing! You are the epitome of the all time favorite words “Experience is the best teacher”; and that is why you make such great movies and plays. I see life experiences in your movies, and your stage plays. Sometimes, I even see myself in the characters. Keep it up and up! And only look down to pull someone else up with you. Only look back to see how far you have come, and only look around to see how much God has blessed you. Take care Tyler and much success:) Sincerely Phyllis aka Cookie

Tyler Perry is tops in my book and there is nothing that anyone can do or say to change that. I don’t know what I was watching before his plays and movies came to be, but I am so forever grateful that he is here. And for Sheila that says to him “go to hell”, I say he’s already been there, and he obviously didn’t like that scene. To Cme, just because people are interested in every facet of a person’s life, does not mean that he should be given free access to it. It’s just none of your business. Furthermore, whatever the answer was, it probably wouldn’t satisfy you anyway.

I am a 70 year old fan. How about a movie that can bring people of all races and ethnic groups together in one neighborhood. The humor must be present and you must have Madea as the on who conducts the community meeting. There will be more that one meeting. Each meeting will show a lot of progress that helps people to grow and get along with each other. Contact me if you need ideas.

Grabs her soapbox, steps up on it
Personally, I don’t give a rat’s *ss if Mr. Perry is green with purple polka dots and sleeps with pink footed jammies on - if more men and women had Mr. Perry’s work ethic, attitude, etc., this MIGHT be a nicer world to live in. So this white woman says - you go Tyler Perry!!

To mamaj: I did not ask nor answer a question, nor did I make a judgement call. If you revisit my comment, what I stated was that people are curious about famous people’s lives and all comments about are not positive. Therefore, I would surmise that a emotionally secure person would take their comments merely a comment, not adding or taking anything away from his or her staus. That is what I wrote.

Fans this is a must read article, Tyler I love your plays and movies, reading what your fans are saying just touched my heart; I just could not help my self for writing this. Tyler Perry, why did you release your band members, yes fans that good sounding band he had, he let them all go, my understanding is he wanted a new band so he can pay less wages, so where do the good boss come in, then he told them not to use him as a reference, and he did not give them a notice, he just let them go. Now I understand this is his choice, he needed to scale back on some things because he is blowing up, but the Tyler I know first hand is not a very good person, he has gotten beside him self, and fans all of you who wants to meet with him, I hate to tell you, it will never happen, you are not in the correct social group, you are too small for him unless you are making millions then he might give you an order graft, I am not a hater I might sound like it but am not. You are truly an inspiration to many of people, try to keep that going so your fans want see who you really are. I told this person who was in your band before they came along Tyler Perry band did not sound good at all, fans if you have an ear for music you could have heard the old band coming in late with the singers, then when he got the band that he just let go, you could see the fans up out of there seats dancing because the music sound just that good, I know business is just that, business, I just didn’t like the way he went about letting his band members go like that, they have family too you know, all I am saying Tyler Perry has a real cold heart but he would not show it to everybody, just don’t praise this man to high because that’s what has happen to him he is smiling in our face and as soon as he get out of our sight, you wouldn’t believe the cold heart this man has. I wish him well and I will still support him because he do have employees and they need us even if he think he do not, just sit back take notes, am sure he know our creator, I pray our creator touch his heart and bring him back down a little so he want forget who helped him get where he is today for the last four years (HIS BAND) was a big part of that, good luck with your new band, remember this story about the lady who was homeless and only wanted a pair of shoes, well you just knocked your hole band off their feet because of the lie you told them, remember this Mr.Perry, band members, I will never let you all go because you all are the best band I have ever had.

First of all, let’s all agree that we do not really know celebrity. What we know is their image, craft, skill, talent or service. All celebrities have Public Relations Agents to have improve their images. Often times the public get caught of in a famous person’s image and when he or she does or perceived to have done something wrong, the public is taken aback. For example, when preachers “falls.” We limited in how much we know about our co-workers, family, friends and some of our significant others; therefore, there again, we don’t really know the true character of a famous person. So I believe we should appreciate their talents and skills and not try to worship the person.

As a gay man I would like to say that I have heard from several persons in the black gay community of Atlanta that the inspiration for Medea is from the drag act of Sophia who is currently on V-103’s morning show. I do not know if this is true or untrue. It would not be overly surprised to find it to be true. I don’t think it matters if Mr Perry is gay, straight or simply asexual. My family and I will continue to be supporters of his ventures and I’m sure countless other people will.

I don’t care too much for his movies/plays but he gets mad props from me the way he checked that reporter for talking to Janet Jackson like that. I don’t care if you mess around with a monkey you handled your business 24-7 that day. It’s a classy man to keep his personal life to himself. People get p** off with me at work because I don’t come in and say who my boyfriend is and what he does. Just because you are in the business doesn’t give people the right to know your business. You owe noone nothing in ref to your personal life.

Why is it that Tyler Perry is the only celebrity that has to deal with the “gay” issue every day of his life no matter what he does? Or how well he does it? I’ve never seen anything like this. Within the first 5 minutes, someone is attacking his sexuality. The convo ALWAYS strays from his talent and humanitarian contributions. Keep up the good work, Tyler.

Why does the question of whether someone is gay or lesbian always come into the picture. Has it ever to anyone that Tyler Perry would prefer just to keep his personal life out of his professional life. And it is no one business what he sexual orientation is but his.

Of course, TP’s personal life is his own business and does not have to reveal his preference. That I agree with. However, although I think it is a non-issue, I can understand why people are curious. That is why celebrity magazines and celebrity TV commentaries are so popular. People read the magazine and watch the program to know everything: what they eat; what are their stressors; how their children look; what are their next project; and (OMG) who are they dating. I don’t think asking a question is wrong, but to assume and state it as a fact is wrong.

I couldnt care if he is gay, I feel he needs to address when he has talent, Real talent working with him. It a joke the way he hires his hired help. Leaving truly alented people out of the spotlight. The talent who has saved his ASS in the past. You need to check yourself TYLER.

Y the haters? Tyler is not the only one who have to deal with this foolish question(Will Smith, Jada Pinkett, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifiah, P Diddy to name a few). What I find annoying is it’s always us attacking our celebrities. You don’t find the stupid “is he/she gay?” question in white media. A person does not have to reveal their sexuality to anyone but the person they are sleeping with. To the person who have the so-called inside knowledge about Tyler Perry maybe he tried men earlier in life and is on a new and different spiritual path. As for his body of work I love everything he does and I own all four of his movies. I am counting down to Meet the Browns, The Family that Preys Together and Madea goes to Jail.

Tyler Perry’s House of Payne is a show that my daughters (both teens) and I sit down to watch together. It’s funny, it has great morals, and it shows both respect for adults and discipline when it is not given. There are too many programs out there that do not have this and show the kids running the household and having to have the latest and greatest clothing and accessories. Thank you for giving us something different.
Ok, I will concede and say that sometimes Jazmine’s character is obnoxious ;)

Sharon…….This is the kind of hate you people received when they’ve made it successfully, so I’m sure Tyler is shaking it off. Some folks are jealous because he’s made it and he’s doing it without the influence of Hollywood. I’ll will say this if he is gay…HE’S ONE RICH MOTHER$%^&!

On the real. If i had half the talent for writing and producing as MrTyler, and his money. I would not give a monkeys tail what any of you broke folks thought of me. While I am laying on my Plosh sofa watching my 50inch screen Flat Tvs..sipping a cocktail and waiting to entertain FRIENDS later, why would I even care what you thought my sexual preference is. If you want to stay up nights trying to figgure who I am boneing I will be enjoying MY life that I worked so hard to create. Perry is now reaching the benefits from those many nights sleeping in his car(while you haters on here were cozy in your lil match boxes that you call homes. If he stopped you on the street and asked for a dollar you would look at him in scorn and tell him to go get a job! as I have heard from several folks on Marta looking down of folks begging for money. I dont look down some times I give sometimes I dont but I never scorn or look down on them or it could very easily be ME homeless. NONE of us is exempt. Any one of us could loose Everything we have..job, home, car, family and be on the streets..Perry was once homeless. You folks didnt care then. Now that he is successful. You want to judge his preference. Well if hes gay he’s got MORE loot and talent then some of you haters will ever see in your entire lives. Dont hate on Perry. He will be fine, just make sure you can Pay your bills and stop worring about someone who dont even know your behinds Exist(nor do he care mo madder because hes making MORE loot. He may be gay..but he’s a wealthy gay and aint asking you for a dime which most of you haters probably cant even spare. Get a life and leave this Rich Gay man alone. Its HIS life, he only has one to live just like the rest of us.

AMEN, to your last comment. We are difinitely behind you. A lot of the things (no the majority)you say is what we as women want to say to society. But since we (black folk) have been blessed with nickels, they can’t be hit in the head with a marshmellow and are kids are suffering and we’re still not being taken seriously. We think that we’ve made it however, our offsprings are suffering because we’ve bought into the fake society. Thank you, for making us remember “This is the way your granny done it,we made it, and if you made,you kids will too. Stop copying other folk losing yourself. Like Madea, KEEP IT REALLLLLLLLLL. :}

To By G Your comment on whether Tyler is gay, who cares? What if he is, what does that have to do with the way God has blessed him? Do you maybe want to “get with him” if he is? God loves us all. If everyone minded their own business and stopped judging others, this would be a much better world. He gives back to the community, that’s what makes him so successful, not what his sexual orientation is.
