Would you pay $35 for a movie ticket?

How plush would a movie theater have to be for you to fork over $35 for your entry? According to Variety, the luxury circuit Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinemas is ready over the next five years to build 50 theaters, most with eight screens, across the country, each with 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection, the capability for 3-D movies and a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers. Oh, and there will be a concierge and valet parking.

There’s more: made-to-order meals like sushi and a call button you can push to summon a waiter.

Food would be extra, of course, but the basic ticket price would be $35.

Two theaters are expected to open this year near Chicago and Seattle and others are planned for a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb and Scottsdale, Ariz. Other theaters would be built in California, Florida, Nevada, Pennsylvania and New York. There’s no mention of metro Atlanta yet.

Here’s my problem: I can’t think of a new Hollywood movie I’d want to see enough to cause me to want to spend $35.

But the company’s idea is to lure in monied public who normally just watch movies at home.

Is that you? Would you go to a theater that charges $35 per ticket?

Absolutely. For my husband and I to go now it costs $40 to sit in gross, dirty seats with sticky, smelly floors, next to giggling teenagers who are just there to make out with their boyfriends or stupid women who bring their babies. $100 is a typical nite on the town, why not for a movie?

By Chief Wiggum

Absolutely not. I always do the matinee (if I go at all), and I’m tired of the price creep I’m seeing there. If I’m patient, I can easily BUY the movie for the price of two tickets.

When I finally update and get a new HD television, and perhaps the BluRay DVD setup, I see no reason to waste my time at the movie theater.

Yuk, who wants to sit back in a recliner that has been used by other people! I have enough troble leaning my head back in a regular theatre without thinking about lice, I usually put my jacket behind my head. I do however like the idea of being able to have a drink and appetizers while watching a movie.

March 26, 2008 8:51 AM | Link to this

HAHAHAHA!!!! Wait………..HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!

That was a good joke!!!! I give a theatre like that 6 mths before it realizes how stupid the idea is. Most folks are already doing matinees and bringing their own snacks!!

Countmein, maybe you should find another theatre, there are clean ones without the sticky floors in many neighborhoods. I wouldn’t spend $1 for that!

Wow, $100 is a typical night on the town? I admit it, I am too cheap for that kind of lifestyle. That’s nuts. And seriously, folks, this starts at $35 per person. You’ve seen how much freaking popcorn costs at the movies, how much do you think good food is goint to cost? This will easily be $120 for two people when all is said and done. I’m sorry…I see that as 1/3 to 1/2 of a car payment. I’m no Clark Howard, but I put money away every month equal to a car payment, so I can pay cash (or mostly cash) for my next car. No way do I plan on blowing $100 for a night out. I get ill when I go to a bar and pay $3-$4 for a beer. I guess I’m not cool enough for Atlanta, but then, my car and home haven’t been repossessed, like happens to so many idiots here. Ever seen how busy those black towtrucks are at night?

Hmmm, $35.00 to share a film with people I would probably avoid outside the theater when I can watch the film in the comfort of my home media room on an extra large flat screen on the wall with people I actually like. People who will not be annoying, pesky or distracting with their mobile devices, cheap colognes and annoying chattering in foreign accents. No thanks, I like to create my environment…not have to assimilate into a setting I find most unattractive to be in.

$35 clams to see a movie??? Not only no, but hell no! I’d buy the DVD and play it in the comfort of my own home multiple times. My food and my booze are included too!

Chief Wiggum I agree 100% with your last post.

Absolutely not. My biggest issue with movies nowadays is the lack of courtesy from other moviegoers. Can I be guaranteed that people will shutup for my $35 per ticket? I doubt it.

Now, I would probably pay $75 to watch a movie that I really want to see via On Demand at home on my TV when it is released in theaters. The savings from not burning gas, not buying expensive food, not having to park, and knowing I don’t have to deal with the rudeness of others? No problem.

$100 for a night out? Yes!

I agree with JRG1705 and almost everyone else. For $35, I’d rather be in the comfort of my own home watching the movie. Maybe they could lure ppl if the $35 included food, but otherwise, what’s the hype. If you can afford to regularly shell out $35 to sit in a comfy seat at the movies with waiters bringing you sushi, you should probably have a home theater added to your home.

Watch these work. There are too many stupid people out there with a lot of money, and not enough sense to know what to do with it. I am married with two kids, so we wait 6-9 months and pay $13.99 at Walmart so not only can I watch it at my convenience, but can pause it if nature calls. I won’t be in attendence!

I agree with most of you - $35 for a movie is just too much! Dinner definitely needs to be included for me to even think about going. Also, having a call button for a waiter is definitely not a good idea because as we all know, there will be people who will keep pressing that button and requesting things from the waiter which will be a big interference during the movie. Doesn’t sound any different than a normal theater with the regular chatting, baby crying and people munching on their food like there’s no tomorrow.

By AK

By Bart

I would pay it if it came with a personal taser I could use on people who talk. I haven’t been to a movie theater in years. You can’t find one in Atlanta that doesn’t have people yapping on their phones, to each other, or their babies they brought with them. If paying more would keep these people out, I’d pay.

By JacketFan

March 26, 2008 9:23 AM | Link to this

If the environment is nice/upscale enough, I could see me and my wife doing so.

However, the food and service would have to be superb for us to return.

You pay that much or more to see a live play to the Alliance. The venue and people are comfortable. So I see that as a possibly. They would have to get it just right, however.

Well isn’t that just the brightest idea ever? From what I have read, theaters are having problems selling tickets at the current price. I refuse to pay $35 for a ticket to see a movie regardless of what kind of seats they have. I will stay home and watch my 65” HD tv thank you very much!

I’ll pass.. I can sit at home and recline in a leather couch, watch a large flat screen and a blu-ray with all the audio fixings, that in my opinion sounds and looks better than some projector at the theaters.

And it’s cheaper, and I don’t have to sit next to trashy people.

$35 bucks is 2.5 months of Netflix.

First, I think you would lose the teenagers and Mom’s with babies at $35. At that price it would be a different crowd (ie first class on a plane). I think many would see it as a special occassion event, not a regular Friday night option.

Secondly, I image this theater would have to pick their films carefully as the oscar type films would draw more than American Pie 12.

Would I try it sure, but it would have to be a film I really wanted to go out of my way to see. I will save the rest for the home theater where I have a bar, food and a very pretty waitress.

There’s already a place that does this at a more reasonable price. AMC’s Buckhead Backlot… I love the fact that you can have a meal there while watching your movie and drink a brew. I would not knock it until you’ve tried it. When you think what you’d pay for a dinner out and a movie the costs are likely aproximate. People love the idea of living in luxury. For example, 1st class/business class or airlines, suites at sports stadiums, upscale grocers and boutiques, spa days, nail salons, 50” HDTV’s, the massive luxury car market, the success of car washing places, and uber vacations at resorts. If the tickets cost $35, then I seriously doubt the food will be that overpriced. A meal at Applebees or Chilli’s for 2 runs you at least $40 with non-alcoholic drinks and tip. I’m sure the theater would keep charges in that area to maximixe profits. On the otherhand, I’m a $5 movie goer myself or I pay $3.50 per movie at the drive in. But, I don’t believe in spending 3K on a TV in my house either. That’s better spent elsewhere. So, it’s all a matter of opinion.

If children and people with cell phones were not allowed, I’d pay $50. Seriously, somebody needs to open a theatre that doesn’t allow infants. I don’t even want to pay $1 for a movie if I’m going to be bothered by crying babies or children kicking the back of my seat.

By Dan

I might pay $35 for an epic and surround sound built into the seat so I won’t hear the idiots making small talk behind me. Also how bout a shock button for people kicking my seat? Also, won’t the “waiters” disturb the others when delivering the food? How ‘bout a magnetic key card that lets you into your theatre and that will stop the people from catching the last 20-30 minutes of your movie because their movie was over!! and how about a shock seat if your cell phone goes off or you talk. You aren’t in your living room, PEOPLE!! I don’t think they’ll be able to justify the construction of such a theatre due to low ticket sales. By the way, a DVD does not compare to the movie experience. Will the matinee price be $15? Wwill there be a mantinee? doubt it

It appears the theater company has researched the population and found a really gullible audience in Chicago and Seattle with slightly less stupid audiences in their other planned cities. There’s no need for them to consider Atlanta. We may be Southerners and even sometimes ‘red-neck’ but we’re certainly not that STUPID.

JacketFan: You wrote “You pay that much or more to see a live play to the Alliance. The venue and people are comfortable. So I see that as a possibly. No I would not pay 35.00 for a movie ticket. I love to go to the movies. I try to make it to the theater at least twice a week. However if movie tickets escalated to $35.00 dollars, I would rather invest in home theater (http://gizmodo.com/361235/white-house-home-theater-reveals-laura-bushs-bordello-tastes).

LOL. Come on, folks. Half of you drop at least $20 a person already when you go to the movies. What’s another three gallons of gas-worth in a movie-going experience? LOL. For $35, I want WolfGang Puck preparing my popcorn and one of the actors/actresses gladly serving it.

I think this is a great idea that they will make a ton of money on.

I don’t think you can compare this concept to Buckhead Backlot. Backlot isn’t very nice, the food is not terrible, and every beer I’ve gotten has been stale. The service is well below par because they have one person serving the entire theater of 100. $35 seems a little too high but they priced it there for a certain clientele and I think they’ll get it.

True, the high cost would keep out the loud, smelly riff-raff but it would also keep out us decent working folks who really can’t afford those prices on a regular basis. I have been to Chicago & Seattle recently, they are not experiencing the problems with recession that you guys are back in GA. I still think that the outsiders have this misconception that there is a ton of Money in Atlanta when that could be farther from the truth.

Anyway on topic, I actually love this idea & here are a few simple rules that must be laid out & adhered to: It must be NO children under the of 18 AT ALL, Surround Sound would indeed be built into the seats to make it easier for everyone to hear. The servers would ONLY come in during intermission periods. NO OTHER TIMES! Excessive chatter means you are expelled & NO REFUND! That price includes 1 complimentary cocktail & appetizer OR instead of 1 movie make that for 2 movies & make it a double feature.

This isn’t going to appeal to a majority of people anyway because its NOT SUPPOSED TO. Most people are too cheap these days to pay the minimum $10 for a movie let alone pay $35 for a wholely different experience. Then there’s the germophobe’s the xenophobe’s & the people who are bi-polar or schizophrenic ( I only JUST moved from ATL in the past 2 months & TRUST there are WAY too many people there like this for my taste). So in ATL that rules a significant amount of people out. BUT does that mean that the theatre’s won’t do well. On the contrary, depending on the location there will be plenty of people available of have that kind of money to spend & are indeed willing to spend it as long as it meets those simple requirements I suggested & means for a peaceful yet fun night out at the movies.

Ya know, I find it increasingly amusing that some of you seem to think that this will eliminate “certain” people. Guess what? There are just as many (if not more) ignorant, loud talking, pants hanging down around their asses, skirts up to their waists non-black kids around!! Your precious little entitled pale faced children are just dying to be like the black kids. They want to dress like them, listen to the same music, even date them (YES, girls and boys). And there are just as many financially handicapped non-blacks, so whatever “class” you are associating with that, applies to the ones who look like you too!!!! IDIOTS!!!!!!

And on the flip side, there are many, many financially entitled non-whites who can afford to do whatever the hell they want, who’s kids know how to act, and are just as educated and entitled, so y’all ain’t doing nothing special! And I know it just killing you!!! FOOLS!!!

I bet it will work. When the starbucks concept came out, I thought for sure it was going to fail. Back then I thought, who in the hell is going to pay $4 for a cup of coffee?? But, I stood corrected b/c there were tons that do. I’m sure there are plenty that will be glad to part with $35 just to get in one of these theaters…..

I rarely go to the movies nowadays b/c of the cost. It’s so much nicer to watch them at home.

A better strategy would be to charge $50/couple for the movie, but include a nice dinner . Guests choose from an a la carte menu of appetizers, main courses, and deserts (drinks and tip would be extra). You have it in a nice dining room room where every seat faces the front but with individual tables. Movies are shown twice a night for early and late diners. This price point would keep the annoying teenagers away. The tables would be a several steps up from the floor so that the staff can walk around without obstructing the view.

Seems like a decent idea to me. $35 is substantially less than tix to sporting events, concerts, etc. The only thing I would expect is to be able to make more of a night of it. Maybe let you in 45 mins early and hang for a bit after. $100 is a pretty easy for dinner and a movie, so if there were something in particular I wanted to see, I would do it.

I know some people who would pay this much for a truly upscale cinema experience. But the theater would have to ban babies and young children. Groups of rowdy and ill-mannered teens are a problem at normal theaters, but I don’t expect too many teens will have, or want to spend, that much money. But I can see plenty of parents dragging their toddlers along, thinking that they need to have a “family night” out.

And they wonder why file sharing is so big in the internet. When theaters are a rip-off and DVD’s are a rip off (especially the high definition), thne obviously people are going to download them for free.

Wake up! Stop waiting 6 months to release a movie for purchase (nowadays it should be simultaneous to theater release). If movies came out for download, store purchase, and theater release, all at the same time, there would be more competition. Prices would go down, and theaters would have to get off their butts and offer more to the customer to get ripped off in their theaters.

Before you think that $35.00 a movie is going to bring a “higher” class of people and peace and quiet, go to Chatain Park for a concert and see how the “high class” people act. You can’t hear the singer for the conversations. At a movie theatre, you’re going to get people who will carry on a conversation during the entire movie because “I paid $35.00 and I’ll do anything I want!”

Wow… Movie Theatres are already dying off due to the quick turn-around time to DVD and the increasing affordability of Home Theatre Setups. Theatres made sense at one point in time, because you just couldn’t get the same effects at home, times have changed. It won’t be too much longer until Movies just go straight to DVD and there are no more movie theatres.

Now if they set this up correctly, so couples and groups could be in psuedo-isolation, and included dinner / drink with the price. Then they may have a market within the dating niche, something like dinner and a movie…

I just don’t see the demand to warrent this idea

How much more silly can we get with trying to increase business in America? We’re in a recession, therefore everyone is penny pinching and the wealthy barely want to interact with the “common” people anymore. The price tag is stupid. I can get the same service at home for a fraction of the price and enjoy my evening. My wife and I only go to the matinee now and that’s barely enjoyable. Guess we’ll see that business venture folding very soon.

When I lived in Boca Raton, there was a Muvico chain that had valet parking and special seating in larger chairs in the balcony with a restaurant and a bar. I think that was maybe $10 over the film price. I only used it for movies I really wanted to see (like the first Lord of the Rings and Spiderman) but I wouldn’t pay this price for what Hollywood’s putting out now.

Even now at $10 for a ticket plus another $10 for popcorn, I’m only going to see Iron Man and the Dark Knight for sure. Anything remotely on the bubble will not be seen in the theater.

By the way, I’m black and I don’t talk during the movies or use my cell phone. It’s called manners and it’s not color-specific.

In case you haven’t noticed, the movies that make the most MONEY are the KID movies. Finding Nemo blew away every other movie a few years ago as did Cars, and now Horton Hears a Who is doing the same. If you come to see a kid movie, expect kids to be in there. Of course, I would not bring them to see an adult movie because that’s irresponsible and I don’t agree with that. Kids will come to theaters and if I bring my kids to see a KID movie, I dare you to say to my face to get my “brats” out of the movie just because you’re nose is stuck so far up your a** that everyone else should bow down to you like you’re some kind of celebrity. I think not. My kids deserve to have fun every now and then like everyone else. As for the $35 movie, no way, you can have it if you want to pay an arm and a leg and I’ll laugh, we’ll be content to stick with the regular theater, and DVDs.

I might pay $35 for a movie…if I could download it in HD from somewhere like iTunes and play it on a home theater the day it was released in theaters. Get 4 people watching it total and it’s already much cheaper than a theater with overpriced popcorn and drinks (not to mention the gas cost to get there). Why theaters continue to raise prices without digital video (they mostly still use reel-to-reel projecters that are nowhere near the video quality of a Blu-ray Disc) is beyond me.

Only if a relative had something to do with the movie, like wrote it, starred in it, and then I would expect that we would get in free at a premier or something like that.

We only fork out money for a movie if we just can’t wait for it to come to TV, and then it is only to the Dollar theater, which we have a pretty nice one near us.

I gag at $10.00 per ticket. We even received free tix for Christmas we still haven’t used for a full priced movie.

And $100.00 for an evening out? Wow, y’all live the high life, shop at Saks, vacation in St. Tropez, ski in the Alps, summer in the Hamptons kind of people.

We have really fun date nights for less than $10.00 and that includes food and activity for my husband and I. So NO $35.00 movie tix for us.
