Full lineup for Screen on the Green includes ‘Jaws’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Turner Broadcasting’s free Screen on the Green will kick off May 29 with an outdoor showing of Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning “Jaws” (1975).
And new this year, fans will get to vote for the five-week series’ final film which will be either “Back to the Future” (1985), “Rocky” (1976) or “Footloose” (1984).
Turner plans to officially announce Thursday or Friday the lineup for this year’s Screen on the Green, which due to the drought will be temporarily held this year at downtown’s Centennial Olympic Park. Screen on the Green is being presented by Turner’s Peachtree TV.
The schedule:
May 29 — “Jaws” (1975).
June 5 — “Big Momma’s House” (2000).
June 12 — “Chicago” (2002).
June 19 — “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982).
June 26 — Fans’ choice between “Back to the Future” (1985), “Rocky” (1976) or “Footloose” (1984). Moviegoers can vote by going to Peachtreetv.com from April 14-27. The winning film will be announced in May.
Moviegoers are advised that no glass containers or alcoholic beverages can be carried into the park. No grills are allowed (food and beverage vendors will be present). Attendees are asked to leave pets at home and umbrellas and high-backed chairs are discouraged.
Screen on the Green is expected to return to Piedmont Park in future years.
Are you excited by this year’s lineup of films? Which movie do you most want to see?

Was hoping they’d have a campy movie for the gays like they have in past years (Mommy Dearest!). I would have liked them to play “The Bird Cage”. Guess that suggestion fell on deaf ears! My vote for June 26th is ‘Back to the Future’!

Shame the lineup is so lame…but saves me the trouble of schlepping to the cement park. Not trying to be negative, but what boring, old, tired choices…

OK These didn’t wow me or make me mark the calendar.
And since the water’s off on the rings….well let’s say there’s not much reason to go. Be like Six Flags; dig a well and get the water flowing.

I for one will be there with bells on, cement or no.

Sorry lineup, but at least there’s no queer movies. We don’t want to encourage more of those freaks to come out of the closet. It’s neither natural nor acceptable, and forcing it down our throats (no pun intended) won’t change that.

If they show a “queer movie” will you promise not to come LeftwingLoon? And if you are left wing…aren’t you liberal? Oh wait, you were the guy tapping his foot at the mall last week and I turned you in. Methinks you protesteth too much. ANd Chicago is not boring, but not much of a “classic” yet…Jaws is just so DONE…it is on TV all the time…why choose it for a festival?

Semi-good movies in a very bad location. Who wants to schlepp their stuff halfway across town and not be able to drink a beer for your efforts. I’ll be sitting this one out until it returns to Piedmont.

So the grass in Centennial park is somehow better able to withstand the damage that will be inflicted by the SOG-going masses than the grass in Piedmont Park? I’m confused. And I agree about the mediocre choices - with Turner’s vast film library, THIS is the best they could come up with? I think I will just sit this one out too - at home with a cold one!

For the family night:

An Affair to Remember
For the action movie:

I don’t know why everyone is complaining about no alcohol. Technically I don’t think you’re supposed to have it at Piedmont Park either. Everyone does it, just keep it on the DL. As for the movies…I’m excited about ET since it got rained out last year and I’ll be happy with either Footloose or Back to the Future. I think I’ll stay at home for the rest.

This sounds to me like another sad excuse to get people down to the business district. Kind of like Shirley made sure all the bars closed an hour earlier in 2003/2004, but suddenly bars were allowed to open up at Underground and stay open til 5. Doesnt the city own Underground? I agree Lamont Sanford, the atlanta city govt has proven how stupid they really are. Needless to say, i will skip it as well

damn…what a sorry line up. I’m not gay and I enjoyed Mommie Dearest. If I see ET or Big Momma’s house one more time, I’m going to lose my f-ing mind. What a sorry line up. There will be better movies on TCM than at this festival. They choose these movies because they know the type of people that are going to show up at CP arent the same as the Piedmont Park folk. Personally, I’d wouldnt like to see Gone With The Wind and hasnt Footloose made an appearance for the last few years. I’d like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or GIANT or The African Queen…but I will be voting for Rocky…now thats a classic…but Big Mommas House and Chicgo…those are no classics. And funny how they movie it to a spot where u got to pay for the food and beverage as oppose to making a night of it & whats an outdoor movie festival if I cant drink my liqour there.

Really, Big Momma’s House? That’s an awful choice, not remotely a classic. Where is a true classic in the line-up something pre-1970s?
The parks dept has done a great disservice to the public by banishing these long running gatherings to other less favorable locales.

I agree with most comments above concerning the lineup and locale of this years SoTG and other festivals. What scares me is the idea that some of these events like SoTG, Pride, Dogwood, etc will not return to the park. It seems like a lot of the folk who are “in charge” of the park don’t like people actually coming to the park and are just finding a way to push them out. And the alternatives suck. Dogwood in a parking lot, SoTG without the grass, pride festival inside, etc. This change fundamentally alters the events and none of the events that I usually frequent the park to enjoy have enough pull in their new locations. we need to make sure that they come up with a plan on keeping piedmont park the social destination that it has been.

Lighten up folks… Centennial is run by the state not city and only offered to host this to keep it from going away. There are plenty of us living around Centennial that will enjoy walking out of our place to our park. And what is it with all the concrete comments… other than the walkways the whole thing is landscaped beautifully. And yes, the fountains are running right now.
Don’t like the movies or our Park…that’s cool - stay home and let us enjoy this series just like we do all the other great events and free concerts we have. Peace-

Jaws and ET are classic American films. That being said, I’ve seen both about 50 times. But I’m sure children would enjoy watching them on the big screen. Also, I am surprised there are no romantic comedies on the list, and nothing made prior to 1970. I’d love to see Citizen Kane, Bringing Up Baby, Barefoot in the Park, A Patch of Blue, Streetcar Named Desire, Poseidon, The Hustler, From Here to Eternity, The Godfather (I or II only),….the list of good choices goes on and on. Instead we get Big Momma’s House and Chicago. Guess they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel at the Turner film library.

I can deal with the move to Centennial Park. This way there will be less horrible traffic afterwards because people will be more inclined to take Marta, and bicycle parking isnt 6,000 miles from the event. What I cannot deal with, however, is Big Momma’s House. Not only is it not a classic, it’s not even campy enough to be fun to laugh at on a large scale. It’s just a cinematic travesty and whoever decided to choose it clearly has a deficiency in their ability to choose something that was (hopefully) picked to be mocked. That said, at least the event is still going on, and hopefully next year someone with a little more film knowledge can choose the list.

It’s rained and rained and rained lately -I can’t believe the park’s grass is on the verge of perishing. Why don’t they start having it there, and if it never rains this summer and there’s a problem -THEN move it to Cent. Park? Why can’t they have some fun movies like Blazing Saddles or Raising Arizona?

Chicken Soup out of Chicken Sh*t! The movie selection makes it fun for audience feedback. And a fair selection for gay, straight, black, & white. I think the selections are much better than last year! While it is not at Piedmont Park, the Olympic Park has plenty of grass to accommodate for the crowds…and its easily accessible using MARTA. What a really lame line up! This is sponsered by TCM none of these moovies sound classic to be ok maybe jaws and the viewers choice. Since when did 2000 moovies become classic. Whoever said an afair to remember and chitty chitty (the original ) list had it on. One of the best screen on the green is when they had a hitchcock The birds moovie That was the best that i can remember… will see you all next year. I hate no one but enough with the gay jokes… he who lives in a glass house DONT THROW stones, he who is without sin … we all are sinners and have done some dirt in our lives so continual hate for others is so self destructive, why do you think some of the gays flaunt it.. .heck to p** you off so get over it … i am sure you have p** someone else off once or twice in your life based on your color, gender, religious belief etc!

The line-up just does not go with the theme of the event. I thught the idea was to come out and watch old cult classics that are not shown regularly on T.V. Big Mamas House, and Chicago are on every other week on HBO. I would have like to have see movies like Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon or Even Coming To America, Lady Sings the Blues. These movies bring a real sense of nostalgia. Is it that Peachtree TV cant get some of the great classics as TCM? Will the event return to Piedmont in the future? Bottom Line the line up just isnt great. BOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Was wondering who came up with these movie titles. There are so many other thought provoking, side spliting and heart beating titles to choose from. How about an award winning foreign film like ” the hairdressers husband”? Lets have a vote for next years movies. I’ll skip most of this years. And how about a decent Black flim. Maybe “the color purple” or ” lets do it again” or ” the st. louis blues”. Let the people of Atlanta have a real say in the entertainment. Remember, it is for them.
