‘Iron Man’ crushes ‘Speed Racer’

The contest at the weekend’s box office wasn’t between “Iron Man” and “Speed Racer.” The former finished comfortably in the top spot, amassing $50.5 million.

The battle was at the also-ran No. 2 spot where “Speed” ($20.21 million) just barely squeaked by the inane comedy “What Happens in Vegas” ($20 million).

What was good about “Speed Racer”?

Well, for a while I was slightly amused by the monkey Chim Chim.

And I liked the bright colors.

Safe to say, after I type this sentence I’ll never think of “Speed Racer” again.

Did you like the movie? What were your favorite parts? Or, like me, did you go see “Iron Man” again?

This movie was hard to get used to, but once you accept the live action cartoon premise, the special effects were something to see. It was a visual experience! Saw it on Imax and it was amazing. Don’t look for snappy dialog or snarky humor…just enjoy the technical brilliance.

I was not really feeling the movie before I watched it and while watching begged for it to end. For such a long movie, it didn’t have a tight story-line. Nice effects but some of the scences looked like the oldies - you know actors in a studio with the background in motion.

I guess the unrealisticness (if there ever was a word like that) killed it for me. Unlike Iron-man, there was little to relate too.

Personally, I liked Speed Racer. Of course, I went in expecting to see an over-the-top, live action version of a 80’s era cartoon. Of course the plot was simplistic. It was a remake of a Saturday morning cartoon, for goodness sake. For what it was - a popcorn flick - this was a good time. Quit looking for Raging Bull in Speed Racer and just enjoy the eye candy!

This movie was made for the kids of today and didn’t really connect with those of us who watched the original series as a kid. That was the big mistake. It would have been better if they based the movie on a storyline from the original series (e.g, Mammoth Car, Masked Racer). What a shame because I was originally so excited when I heard this movie was coming out.

Hey Femi - so, you thought Iron Man was realistic?

Yeah, right.

After the trailers, I knew Speed Racer was not going to be for us. My boys were not even asking to go. We liked Iron Man the week before—and they were asking to see it again. We were too busy to see any movies, but maybe next week. My 9-year-old can’t wait for the Indiana Jones movie to open Memorial Day. (Yes, he’s seen the other 3). The only person I know who saw Speed Racer said it was really bad. I’m glad I did not go.

@Rod, Iron Man sure as heck LOOKED realistic, pretty amazing job on the special effects, as long as you’re not looking to have a siezure induced.

Christina Ricci does NOT show her boobs in Speed Racer. This eliminates the only 2 reasons for even thinking about paying to see this box-office bomb. WB now pins its hopes on The Dark Knight. What idiots to make Speed Racer runs way more than 2 hours. The summer season already has its first huge flop. $20 million is week one is freaking hilarious! It’s a global disaster — they hate it in Japan, too.
