Here are the movies I’d rather see at the Fox
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Four more films have been selected to screen in August at the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival at the Fox Theatre. Each is, as accurately described, a summer blockbuster.
The films are “Sex and the City” (7:30 p.m. Aug. 7), “Iron Man” (7:30 p.m. Aug. 8), “Kung Fu Panda” (2 p.m. Aug. 10) and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (7:30 p.m. Aug. 30). Three more films will be named later.
I don’t know about you … and I’m certainly not charged with the difficult task of filling 4,000 seats for a show … but I’m disappointed in the choices.
Why? I JUST SAW ALL THOSE MOVIES!
I like it best when the festival plays classics. Like “Casablanca,” which the fest did screen recently. And “Ben-Hur,” which will be shown July 13.
The festival should play more classics.
Since director-producer-actor Sydney Pollack passed in May, they could have considered showing “Tootsie” or “The Way We Were.”
This is the 30th anniversary of the festival. So why not book some movies from 1978? Like “The Deer Hunter,” “Halloween,” “Grease,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” or “Superman.”
If you want to celebrate an anniversary, fete the 50th birthday of “The Defiant Ones.” And while you’re at it, get your sponsor, Coca-Cola, to pony up to bring Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis to the Fox to talk about the movie. I think that would draw a crowd.
Here are other movies I wish were playing at the Fox: “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Mary Poppins,” “Thunderball,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “Big Night,” “The Birds,” “Dumbo,” “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Patton,” “The Naked Gun,” “Unforgiven,” “Stop Making Sense,” “Sunset Boulevard,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Shaft,” “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Chinatown.”
That’s just a start.

They used to have a lot of musicals, and I would buy a book of tickets although we live in Statesboro. The better ones I remember are Oklahoma, South Pacific, Calamity Jane, Lili. For drama, I would favor The Grapes of Wrath and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Most recent movies I consider trash, substituting car crashes and violence for a real story line and acting.

I still remember seeing GWTW at the Fox every summer when I was little. It was one of my favorite things to do, even though I could rarely stay awake for the whole thing.
Other favorites that I saw at the Fox include A River Runs Through It and Aladdin (talk about perfect setting!). I also enjoyed a Grease/Saturday Night Fever double feature.
I think the festival should be 50-75% classics at least. And definitely at least two musicals a year!

Big agreement on seeing big screen classics on the big screen… but I’d add that some years ago they showed Moulin Rouge at The Fox and the look of that film, the red curtain theme and everything about it fit the setting perfectly. They should do that again someday.

Right on Darian!! I couldn’t agree more. Those sorry white folk movies are terrible. We definitely need to see Tyler Perry’s “Tyler Perry.” Starring Tyler Perry. Written by Tyler Perry. Produced by Tyler Perry and all music composed by Tyler Perry. He’s such a rare talent. If we’re lucky, he’ll put on a dress and a wig and talk in a funny voice about how kids today are no good. If we’re really lucky, we’ll get a bunch of former balcony only sitters spread around the entire theather, talking back to the screen, talking on the cellphone, or talking to each other as loudly as they can the entire time. That’s exactly what we need, Darian. And if the show is really good, everyone can pull out their pieces and fire them into the air to celebrate diversity!!!
Isn’t it already dangerous enough walking to your car after the show by the Fox?

Rocky Horror at The Fox - too funny. I don’t get out to the movies much so when I do it’s usually something with great special effects or scenery. A comedy is not something I would go out of my way to see in a theater.

Some great choices already mentioned, specifically Raiders of Lost Ark, Lawrence of Arabia, GWTW, Big Night, Grease, Jaws, Oklahoma, and Aladdin. Moulin Rouge probably did look good, but it’s just so awful.

Any movie which is epic in nature is perfect for the Fabulous Fox. Of course, GWTW should be played yearly if not twice yearly. Anything by David Lean, any movie which originally had an Intermission is perfect. The Sound of Music, Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, A Passage To India. Hitchcock movies are best seen on the big screen as well.
