‘Dark Knight’ vs. ‘Titanic’?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What’s the biggest moneymaking film of all time?
So far, it’s “Titanic” (1997) with a North American haul of $600.78 million and a worldwide take of $1.842 billion.
We say “so far” because emerging from the summer shadows is the latest Batman movie, “The Dark Knight.” Fueled by some great action sequences and a powerhouse performance from Heath Ledger as The Joker, “Dark Knight” is raking in the dough.
As of today, the film has earned more than $441.54 million in North America and ranks as the No. 3 box-office earner of all time behind “Titanic” and “Star Wars.” (“Dark Knight” trails George Lucas’s classic by about $19 million and could pass it after this next weekend).
“Dark Knight’s” worldwide take to date is $704.64 million.
Before you get too excited about “Dark Knight,” realize that it hasn’t sold as many tickets as many many other movies. Remember that tickets today cost a lot more than they used to.
Adjusting for inflation, “Dark Knight” stands as the 49th most popular film of all time … behind 1945’s “The Bells of St. Mary’s.”
The top five movies of all time when one considers inflation: “Gone With The Wind,” “Star Wars,” “The Sound of Music,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “The Ten Commandments.”
No. 6 is “Titanic.”
Are you one of the few who hasn’t seen “The Dark Knight”? If you have seen it, what did you think of the movie?

Have not seen it yet. I have high expectations at this time, so want to wait until my expectations return to “Okay, it’s a movie based on a comic” so that I can fully enjoy it.
Have you noticed that your expectations going into a movie affect how you feel about it? I expected a silly comedy from “Harold & Kumar go to White Castle” and was suprised that it was so much more (as were many other moviegoers).
I had high expectations from “Lost in Translation” due to it winning Best Picture. I was sorely disappointed and was waiting for something to happen.
“The Piano” was one where I had so-so expectations on and was suprised by how good it was. I need to watch it several more times.
Try it for the next movie you see. Did someone tell you it was “The BEST MOVIE EVER!” or did they say “Waste of my time and money”? That affects how you approach the movie, and can affect if you think it was “good” or “bad”.
I have also learned to watch a movie and THEN read the book (for movies based on books) because I am always disappointed when they leave stuff out. But, there are many books that I’ve read that they turned into movies, so I have to temper the expectation. (Like the upcoming “Hobbit” movie)

The Dark Knight was my favorite movie this summer!! Heath Ledger was amazing as The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart was the perfect Two-Face/Harvey Dent. And of course, Christian Bale was awesome…! It actually wasn’t as ‘scary’ as everyone’s made it out to be. Yeah, there were some intense parts, but it wasn’t the almost-R-rated movie I expected. Then again, I may be used to it or something…O_o Great movie all around. =) I really hope Ledger gets at least an Oscar nomination, he was awesome. ((Y’all don’t know how hard it was to keep spoilers out of here. XP))
