Franco among great movie stoners

Who are the great movie stoners?

Well, one of fine caliber has certainly arrived in the last week.

James Franco’s charming (if you want to call it that) performance as Seth Rogen’s perpetually stoned drug dealer in the very funny “Pineapple Express” is one of the best of the summer. It’s nowhere near the acting performances of Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight” or Robert Downey Jr. in “Iron Man,” but Franco’s whacked-out Saul Silver will be remembered for years.

Here are a few of my other favorite movie stoners:

— Sean Penn, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982) — His Jeff Spicoli is the perfect smashed surfer dude.

— Keanu Reeves, “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989) — As far as I recall, Reeve’s gnarly Ted Logan merely samples beer … but the performance is dead-on Valley boy.

— John Hurt, “Midnight Express” (1978) — Hurt’s Oscar-nominated take on an imprisoned drug addict is likely the best stoner performance in history.

— Dennis Hopper, “Apocalypse Now” (1979) — It’s frightening in that he’s not so much acting as reliving a part of his earlier life.

— Marlon Wayans, “Requiem for a Dream” (2000) — Without a doubt, this is the best acting job this otherwise silly comic has ever done.

My favorite stoners both appear in Dazed and Confused. I love Rory Cochran. “Check ya Later!” And Matthew McConaghy plays his part perfectly. The speech about high school girls kills me every time!

Let’s not forget Brad Pitt’s great stoner role, Floyd from ‘True Romance’. His best work has always beene supporting roles (including ‘Twelve Monkeys’), but Floyd is the stoner standout of them all!

Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting.

You have to keep in mind there are the serious stoner movies like Trainspotting and the goofy stoner movies like Fastimes.

But McGregor’s role in that movie was hard to watch, but classic.

Tommy Chong of Cheech & Chong is the greatest stoner. While everyone else other than Dennis Hopper were probably acting stoned, Chong was acting naturally.
