Indigo Girls, Eddie’s Attic still a hot team
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
More than 20 years after he first booked them at Trackside Tavern, the Indigo Girls and Eddie’s Attic namesake Eddie Owen are staging a homecoming at the Decatur live music venue.
On Wednesday, when tickets for Amy Ray and Emily Saliers’ Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 benefit gigs at Eddie’s Attic went on sale at noon, all 360 of them were snapped up in 18 minutes.
“They went fast,” Owen told Buzz. Just over a year ago, Owen returned to the business he sold in 2002 to become the Attic’s director of operations. The Indigo Girls are set to return to the CD racks Sept. 19 with their Hollywood Records debut, “Despite Our Differences.”
“I’ve gotten a sample of it and it’s gonna be good,” Owen said of the disc.
The Aug. 31 show will be a medical benefit for recovering Nashville singer-songwriter Janet McLaughlin, “a dear buddy of ours.” McLaughlin is tentatively scheduled to attend and perhaps even perform in some capacity.
The Sept. 1 show will benefit The Georgia Network to End Sexual Assault.
Saliers, meanwhile, recently celebrated the success of the duo’s summer tour with dinner at Dick and Harry’s in Roswell with friends and partners from her Decatur eatery, Watershed. We’re told that Saliers and company enjoyed chef Harold Marmulstein’s lump crabmeat cakes and Wiano oysters on the half shell, Alaskan king crab, oak-grilled filet mignon and a Fuji apple, Belgian endive and Maytag blue cheese salad.
Uncoupling?
If we didn’t lack the necessary anatomical parts, we could actually be starting to feel, well, sorry for Star Jones Reynolds at this point. In Wednesday’s editions, the New York Post gleefully reported that the under-employed ex-“View”-er is now quietly telling friends that her 21-month marriage to Al Reynolds is over. Apparently, the stress of having two people painstakingly channel-surfing past the ABC television network all day was too much for the Star-crossed couple. Naturally, the Post relied on anonymous sources for its report.
Here at Buzz Central, we were feeling nostalgic for those halcyon days before a certain self-help book thudded onto the nation’s remainder tables. How nostalgic, you ask, dear reader?…
A moment to ‘Shine’
“We went out dirty dancing… . It was all so intense and lusty, and the first time ever he held me in his arms sexually, it was so urgent and almost frightening for both of us because we knew our erotic interest in each other could take over every other single thing.” — the author on her courtship with Al Reynolds from Page 196 of “Shine: A Physical, Emotional & Spiritual Journey to Finding Love.”
‘Captain Back Acne’ files suit
Steven Barnes, former 99X morning host now at rival station Dave FM, has filed a civil lawsuit in federal court alleging that 99X defamed him and engaged in copyright infringement over his film “No Witness.”
In July 2005, the psychological thriller — starring Barnes, Jeff Fahey and Corey Feldman — was released on DVD. Barnes, who plays a hit man in the movie, produced the film after he left a decade-long stint as a morning co-host at 99X. Last year, 99X’s morning team — Fred Toucher, Jimmy Baron and Leslie Fram — mocked the film on air and in July 2005 held a free screening of “No Witness” at the restaurant American Pie.
Barnes at first treated the issue lightly, telling Buzz last year, “It’s beautiful, it’s free publicity. I’ve done nothing to those people. It makes me laugh. I’ll have to send them a thank-you note.”
But he changed his tune.
In the civil lawsuit filed July 25 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Barnes seeks $300,000 for “willful” copyright infringement because the station aired audio clips on the air and showed the entire film at American Pie without his company’s permission. He also wants at least $750,000 in punitive damages for defamation, including for Toucher saying on air that Barnes had been fired from 99X when Barnes said that was not the case.
In another case of alleged defamation, the lawsuit cited Toucher’s personal Web site in which Toucher called Barnes “retarded” and “Captain Back Acne.” Toucher is now an afternoon co-host at WBCN-FM, a rock station in Boston.
Barnes and his attorney, Arthur Gardner, did not return calls for comment. Defendant Baron said he is seeking legal representation. Toucher said he has seen the lawsuit online but hasn’t officially been served. Calls and emails to the other defendants — Fram, Unihost (the owner of American Pie) and Cumulus (owner of 99X) — seeking comment had not been returned as of press time Wednesday.
