Early bloomer Dupri makes awards splash

The man isn’t even 35 yet, and already he’s receiving lifetime achievement awards.

Yes, Atlanta music mogul Jermaine Dupri will receive the Quincy Jones Lifetime Achievement Award at the Soul Train Music Awards, which will be taped Saturday in Pasadena, Calif. Plus it’s been announced that a month later the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers will honor Dupri with his sixth Songwriter of the Year Award, which he will share with Atlanta singer-songwriter Johnta Austin.

In other awards news, the Atlanta chapter of the Recording Academy — which puts on the Grammys — has announced it will recognize on April 26 country singer Trisha Yearwood, rapper-actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, producers Organized Noize and Mike Clark, the late co-owner of Southern Tracks Recording. The event, formerly called Heroes Awards, has been renamed as the Recording Academy Honors.

For tickets to the ceremony at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, call 404-816-1380.

Haircuts done, Hideaway style

Ordinarily, when pairs of men of a certain age depart Johnny’s Hideaway with a young, attractive female in tow, it doesn’t raise too many eyebrows at the venerable Buckhead watering hole. However, when the gents pop back into the club minutes later, freshly cropped and coiffed, that’s considered a bit odd. When he noticed that particular trend this week, Hideaway manager Chris Dauria opted to investigate. As it turns out, the unidentified patron was making some extra coin giving impromptu haircuts in the parking lot.

“We really thought we had seen it all,” Hideaway rep Mike Casey told Buzz. “We don’t know if she was doing this in a car or a van or what. But the guys with toupees were a little jealous, I think.”

There was no immediate word on what the going rate was for the parking-lot hair salon treatment.

Weather in 3-D

Atlanta-based cable network the Weather Channel has decided it needs to stake out some turf in the 3-D virtual online world known as Second Life.com. So starting today, it’s launching Weather Island. The island will host an extreme sports park and will play episodes of a Second Life program called “Epic Conditions.” It also has plans for a surfing simulator. If you’re not into Second Life, this can all make your head hurt. It’s an online world (not a game, its fans point out) that has about 4.4 million residents who live entire other lives of work, play, love, etc. A number of businesses have set up shop there as an inexpensive way to extend their brand.

Mayer, Luda added to Big Easy lineup

Former Buckhead boy and Grammy-winner John Mayer and the aforementioned Ludacris have been added to the lineup of the 2007 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Mayer, who will perform May 5, joins headliners Rod Stewart, Steely Dan, Norah Jones, ZZ Top, John Legend, Brad Paisley and Van Morrison for the festival that spans two weekends in April and May.

As in previous years, a host of New Orleans native favorites will perform both weekends, including Harry Connick Jr., Irma Thomas, Branford Marsalis, Allen Toussaint, Better Than Ezra and the Rebirth Brass Band.

Connick will close the festival May 6. He is expected to perform selections from his New Orleans-themed “Oh, My Nola” album.

ON MY iPOD

Joe, R&B singer: “I guess we should begin by qualifying this as ‘Things I was listening to on my iPod until I just broke it.’ I just downloaded the Robin Thicke album. Jay-Z, BeyoncĂ©, and the new Nas. Old school music? Oh, I’m there all day. I listen to Teddy Pendergrass on the regular. The greatest hits. Marvin Gaye’s greatest hits. Smokey Robinson. When it comes down to slow music and love songs and setting the mood, I mean, I guess I am one of those guys who does that, makes love songs or whatever. But I don’t put myself on to set the mood. That would be a little cheesy!”
