Usher settles on Braselton for 2nd vows

First they called off their glitzy Hamptons wedding, then got hitched in a lawyer’s office. Now comes the latest nuptials news regarding Atlanta R&B icon Usher and Tameka Foster. Word is they finally tied the knot Saturday at Chateau Elan in Braselton.

The ceremony was described by our well-placed source as a “less Hollywood, more family and friends” event during which Lalah Hathaway, daughter of the late R&B singer Donny Hathaway, serenaded the bride and groom with the Luther Vandross tune “Forever, For Always, For Love.” (Hathaway recorded it in 2004 for a Vandross tribute). After the ceremony, the 200 or so guests enjoyed a soul food dinner including fried chicken and macaroni and cheese, our insider says.

Usher and Foster, his one-time stylist, were reportedly first wed Aug. 3 at a small, private gathering in Usher’s attorney’s office, having canceled a lavish event planned for July 28 at the Hamptons estate of Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Usher’s former record label president. Fans can expect to see the newlyweds this Saturday on the red carpet at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards, where Usher, 28, is among the inductees.

By the way, he and his bride, 37, were spotted at an opening of Atlanta music mogul Jermaine Dupri’s new nightclub, Studio 72, last week. V-103 entertainment reporter Miss Sophia said the new Mrs. Raymond was showing. They have announced they are expecting their first child.

A jazzy end to summer

Underground Atlanta filled with the sounds of the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival over the weekend. Festival manager Alonzo Craig was pleased with the four-day festival’s turnout.

“We’re in our second year of revitalizing Montreux,” Craig said. “We’re growing more each year.”

On the steps in front of the Alabama Street stage, Caroline Williams of Jonesboro joined friends from work to celebrate a recent promotion amid rhythm and blues. Rhonda and Morris Sudler of Atlanta found the event to be great family entertainment.

“You can bring the kids with you and everyone can have fun, so you don’t need a baby sitter,” Rhonda Sudler said.

The festival runs through today. Information: 404-853-4234, www.atlantafestivals.com/montreux/index.html.

On tap for charity

Nuevo Laredo Cantina has a wide-ranging group of celebrity bartenders lined up for the eighth annual “Salsa for Dimes” event benefiting the March of Dimes. Former U.S. Sen. (and possible prez prospect) Sam Nunn; restaurateurs George McKerrow Jr. and Pano, Niko and I. Pano Karatassos; Neal Boortz Show producer Belinda Skelton and Jezebel mag’s Beth Weitzman are all listed on the roster of those scheduled to pour for charity.

The bash, from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 9, will feature Mexican cuisine, a mariachi band and — just when you thought the celeb quotient could get no higher — an appearance by “Miss Nuevo Laredo Cantina.” The address is 1495 Chattahoochee Ave. and tickets are $75 per person. Real people: Fun, sometimes loony

The writer’s life is sort of a solitary existence, so mixing with fans and fellow authors at AJC Decatur Book Festival was a treat for Powder Springs novelist Joshilyn Jackson. “About 90 percent of the people I hang around with are imaginary,” she said. “It’s definitely a recharging thing. It’s a little bit intimidating. So many of my freaking heroes are here.” She was referring to the likes of keynote speakers Charles Frazier, best- selling author of “Cold Mountain” and “Thirteen Moons,” and Kinky Friedman, the writer, musician, former Texas gubernatorial candidate and all-around character. “It was so cool we got Kinky Friedman,” said Jackson, author of “Gods in Alabama,” and “Between, Georgia.” “Come on, that’s some street cred.” Jackson considers a book to be “a conversation between the book and the reader,” and says events like book festivals give her a chance to sit in. Of course, sometimes real folks can be even nuttier than those out of a novel. “This one woman came up to me, she had read ‘Gods in Alabama’ and really thought I had written it about her life,” Jackson said, recalling an episode from a past event. “She wanted me to tell her where her husband’s body was buried. That’s a level of crazy you just don’t see every day.” The three-day festival ended Sunday.
