Boortz gets attention

It was difficult to tell Monday, what with all the Barack Obama bashing, the moaning over John McCain’s poll numbers and general spleen juice gushing through the radio, but Atlanta’s own Libertarian syndicated talk show host, Neal Boortz, may have been secretly pleased.

Last Friday’s on-air coup with GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin netted the yakker some national press. As listeners know, during the interview, Palin confirmed for Boortz that she would indeed be making an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” (her visit, incidentally, helped “SNL” score its highest ratings in 14 years, with about 17 million viewers tuned in).

Snippets of Palin’s comments, along with Boortz’s buttery tones, were later used by “Entertainment Tonight” and other national media outlets.

Of why she planned to do the late-night sketch comedy show, Palin told Boortz: “I want to show the American people that we can rise above the shots being taken.”

Naturally Boortz, an advocate for the fair tax, didn’t let Palin off the phone until he broached his favorite subject with her. Palin replied that she is familiar with the plan, adding that the current American tax code is “so doggone burdensome, anything would be better.”

Wedding singer speaks

Regulars of the old Buckhead watering hole Celebrity Rock Cafe would have instantly recognized one of the featured acts at the wedding of Spanx founder Sara Blakely and Marquis Jets co-creator Jesse Itzler over the weekend in Boca Grande, Fla. Sure enough, Band X banged through some of the couple’s namesake requests at the lavish party, including renditions of Rick Springfield’s “Jesse’s Girl” and Hall & Oates’ “Sara Smile.”

“We’re mostly a corporate band at this point,” Band X’s David Cole explained Monday to Buzz. “They happened to see our video on our Web site [www.bandxlive.com] and hired us. They just wanted something really over the top, high energy and fun. They took really great care of us.”

So since Band X plays a lot of corporate gigs, did Blakely and Itzler strike Cole as typical CEO types? Hardly.

“He wore sneakers with his tuxedo and she’s very elegant but you can tell she loves to have fun,” Cole said. “They’re very different, very artistic.”

In response to our obligatory question about a particular wedding guest, Cole told us: “I’m really not sure if Matt Damon got out there and danced or not. He might have, but the place was huge. I couldn’t see him!”
